To Live or Serve: Chapter 10

Been a long time. I'm actually trying to figure out how I want the long term plot to go and it's harder than I originally thought it would be.

Chapter 10

The next day had been worse and not because it was filled with questioning, but because nothing had happened at all. I was left in my cell completely alone for an eternity, the only other presence being the guard who had left a tray with scrambled eggs, toast and bacon shortly after I had woken up.

I sat there in my cell and did the only thing I could, think. It was maddening because I knew that was the worst thing I could do. I didn't need to get myself filled with anxiety and yet that was exactly what I did.

Hours passed and I just knew it was hours and not just a trick of the mind during the dullness of it all.

I began trying to help pass the time by exercising. I did jumping jacks, planks, squats, anything I could do in my small space. It helped some, but I quickly realized that I was just getting sweaty and filling the room with my smell. It was bad enough that as I was panting from the workout, I could smell myself. So I risked knocking on the door.

"Hey, umm," I said, unsure if anyone was listening on the other side since once I knew a guard could be posted at the end of the hallway outside my room and that would be security enough. "Can I take a shower?"

I pressed my ear against the door to try and hear if anything was happening on the other side of the door, but there was nothing discernable. Maybe someone walking far away or something, but nothing that indicated anyone heard me or was going to respond.

With a sigh, I backed away and was going to lie down when there was the jingle of keys and then something scratching against the side of the door.

I took a few steps back and then there was a click. I could feel my heart beating and there was a thumping in my ears as anticipation and a lot less fear than I would have thought, gripped me.

The door opened unhurried, revealing a tall rottweiller in a sea green uniform. He sniffed once and I swore I could see a slight look at disdain from what I could only imagine was the putrid smell of my sweat.

"Follow me," the guard said and didn't wait for me to comply before he turned and stepped out of the door frame and out of view.

I hurried to the door and looked out to see the guard walking away. I also noticed the large rifle he had slung over his shoulder in an assuringly, relaxed manner.

Not wanting to be scolded or locked back up for falling behind, I stepped out of my little room and followed.

There was no blindfold or grunts to keep my eyes forward as I walked through a new part of the facility.

Instead of the concrete walls and lack of windows, we ascended a set of stairs and above the bunker or whatever it was I had been in and that led to a long hall that shot straight to what looked like a large administrative structure ahead.

Light came in through large windows that flanked either side of me and I could see the camp I was in for the first time. It wasn't a camp. It was more like a city.

Instead of prefabricated structures of sheet metal that would normally make up any large military base, there were blocks upon blocks of three story brick structures, many of which were still under construction. I could see a mechanics work shop where several trucks were parked. There was a fire station and rudimentary roads, a few were already being paved with asphalt. I couldn't see for more than a few blocks before buildings blocked my view, but I could guess that this place would be able to house tens of thousands.

As much as I would have liked to stare and get a better grasp of what I was seeing, I didn't want to lose the guard that didn't look back once to see if I was following, so I hurried after him.

There were others walking past me along the way. Most were soldiers, but some looked civilian and all gave me wary glances. I couldn't blame them. How many Lutrians had they seen without being shot at? How many had been shot at by Lutrians? I, even if their government hadn't deemed it so, had the face of the enemy. Needless to say, I avoided eye contact and they avoided shooting me.

Once down the hall, I entered the large building which was exactly like a large office building. More long halls that turned occasionally and were lined with doors. The air smelled of a bit musty as if the air was a little stale as if the ventilation was being overworked, but it wasn't repulsive. The Pelitans would have quickly solved the issue if it did begin to smell bed since they had a far more sensitive nose than I.

I went up a set of stairs where the tile floor surprisingly gave way to waxed wooden slats. Everything instantly became more posh. The white, painted concrete walls were now a light blue wallpaper and the oppressive incandescent lights became a softer yellow. Their air even smelled better. There were more officers as well. Pelitans in starched uniforms periodically passed me, though they still gave me a nasty stink eye.

After only a few more minutes, the rottweiller stopped in front of a door with brass, 237, on it and turned to look at me for the first time.

"This is your new quarters," he said in a very bored tone. "You'll have everything you need in there. Do not leave without explicit permission first from any guard that will be posted outside of the room."

I walked cautiously to the door and turned the brass know, but stopped and looked at the soldier with an eyebrow. "Why did you wait until I had asked for a shower before bringing me here."

"Commissars orders," he growled as if annoyed. "Needed your scent strong enough that some of the more easily spooked guys here wouldn't shoot you because they saw you without first smelling you coming. Was originally going to wait till the end of my shift, but figured if you were asking for a shower, that was good enough." He shrugged, then gun on his back shifting slightly, and then he sniffed. "You stick, maybe you should go take that shower."

He then turned and walked off to the side of the door where I guess he would stay until the end of his shift.

With no other conversation, if I even thought it wise to try and make small talk, I opened the door and stepped in.

It wasn't remarkable, but it was better. There was a single bed and a trunk here. The floor was the same wood as the floor outside and the same could be said for the walls. There was also a window wind drawn shades that gave me another view of the 'city' outside. Being up another floor, I could see farther and my guess that this place could keep thousands of soldiers was an underestimate. It could keep one hundred thousand easily.

I felt a cold tingle run down my back. The Pelitans really were building up a massive army and by the looks at just how busy it was out there, they could easily be almost done.

Watching the view of the military city outside made me lose track of time and there was soon a knock at the door.

I panicked for a moment. Was I supposed to tell them to come in? Should I open the door? I didn't know. I didn't need to know because the door opened and for the first time in a while, I wasn't a bit scared of what I saw.

"Well, you look well taken care of," Rob said with a grin.

The husky closed the door behind him and stepped further in to the small room. He looked around and whistled. "Almost as good as what I got. Almost."

He was wearing a pair of combat trousers, but a buttoned cotton shirt that had the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. It was very appealing to look at.

Feeling my heart relax, I smiled too. "I was starting to feel that I was never going to see you again. Half expected the commisar to shoot me or something ages ago."

That got a chuckle. "If you were a soldier that had committed a crime. Maybe. But a potential source of information and a spy for the Pelitan cause? No. Never. You're valuable. The commisar was just there to shake you down a little is all."

I closed the shades behind me because even though I doubted anyone was peering in, I didn't want them to see me when I hugged the husky.

His fur was so soft now that all that grime from our hike across the mountains was gone. All the colors of his coat popped vibrantly out and almost made my eyes hurt looking at him, but even if my eyes bled, I wouldn't look away.

"Good to see you're safe," he said and hugged me back. "I do admit that I had a few worries of my own."

I pulled back from the hug and chanced a peck on his nose which he didn't pull away from. I wouldn't have been hurt if he did, we weren't exactly in place where we would want to be seen like this. "It wasn't terrible," I said. "Just long. So much waiting."

"I did warn you," he said. He did. "But it should be smoother from here on out."

We broke our embrace and sat down on the bed where the mattress springs squealed a bit.

"What happens now?" I asked and laid a hand on his lap. I could imagine what was going under that thin fabric of his pants, but resisted touching his groin.

He shrugged. "More waiting. I just got back from dropping off your documents at my command. They're reviewing it. I've been questioned about various things. It's all bureaucracy and paperwork now."

I bounced a little on the bed. "I guess I can afford a little waiting. Though have you seen this place, the..."

Rob placed a hand on my mouth.

"I know it's bigger than what you had before" he said as if weren't gagging me with his paw. "They weren't going to keep you in that broom closet forever."

He then leaned in close to my ear. I could feel his breath blow across my face and it made me shiver and get a little hard.

"Avoid talking about anything remotely close to our mission. Even this base, as obvious as it is. The room is most likely bugged." He whispered the word so low that even though he was right against my ear, I barely heard it.

He took his paw off my face and looked at me.

I nodded, fully reminded why I was here. I wouldn't do anything to compromise the mission. I had to finish this right or all of my people were at risk.

"When was the last time you ate?" He asked next as if he hadn't just been breathing into my ear.

"Been some hours," I replied, not actually sure.

He then got up and stretched a little and wagged his tail. "I'll make sure something is sent up. Make sure you clean up. You smell."

I stood up as well and for a moment we stood there, just a breath apart before he leaned in and returned that small peck before whispering, "though I didn't say you smelled bad."

Whatever small chub I had instantly became a full on erection and I was left with it as Rob made his escape from the room.

The instant he was gone, I stepped into the shower and turned on the water. Less so to clean up and more so to not be heard as I grunted when I jerked a load down the drain.
