Chapter 9: A short instant message conversation between friends about recent, concerning events. [3pg, 973 words]
I'm probably going to set the default rating to 'mature' from here on out as there will be later chapters that will deal with somewhat touchy subjects. There are hints of that in this chapter, despite its relative brevity.
[4/25/01 5:12PM] Instant Message from RockinHolly83: hey, you there? gotta talk to you when i can, it’s important_._

PaintedBlack05: Kinda. Going out to dinner with my folks soon. What’s up?
RockinHolly83: did something happen between you and matt a few days ago?
PaintedBlack05: Yeah. Right after we hung out on Monday. He cornered and threatened me; he knows about us having lunch last weekend. Told me to stay away from you.
RockinHolly83: he got suspended. he’s pretty pissed at that, enough to call my house and scream at me. my dad got involved and he finally got the hint that it’s over between him and me, but I don’t think he’s going to be happy to see you at school. how did he get caught?
PaintedBlack05: Mrs. Callaway was coming down to check on me and heard most of it. From what she said he gave her and Mr. Briggs serious attitude so they suspended him, searched him, and got back a few things he’d checked out from the library and never brought back.
RockinHolly83: please be careful. we both need to be careful. katie and her friends will try to get back at you and maybe me, especially if matt gets held back from graduating because he was suspended.
PaintedBlack05: What do you mean?
RockinHolly83: i told you about jeremy, they snuck pot into his locker and got him expelled because he got ryan suspended in junior year. they’ll likely try the same thing with you.
PaintedBlack05: I don’t use a locker; gave it up during class registration as I don’t carry many books. I’ll keep a close eye on my backpack.
RockinHolly83: i’m sorry I pulled you into all this, adam. i didn’t think they’d react this badly.
PaintedBlack05: Don’t be, Holly. Their actions aren’t yours. I’m more worried about what they could do to you.
RockinHolly83: katie is going to watch me like a hawk. i want to hang out with you more but we need to be careful. what she has on me could get me expelled.
PaintedBlack05: May I ask what happened? Was it drinking, pot, something like that? Yes, I’m not a fan of those things but maybe there’s something that can be done to get out ahead of it?
RockinHolly83: maybe? there’s, well, pictures of me. it’s not good and will get me and someone else in trouble. i don’t want to come off as a freak but i’ve done some things. i don’t want to discuss details.
PaintedBlack05: You don’t have to. You know I’m not going to judge you, Holly. As a friend I want to make sure you’re not going to get hurt because your ex is going off half-cocked.
RockinHolly83: i appreciate you looking out for me, adam. i dont think that any of my other friends would have tried to defend me against katie and matt, except you guys. it’s a bit difficult to deal with and i’m not sure what to do.
PaintedBlack05: The only real advice I can give you is to run the clock out; we’re done with school in a few weeks and after that there’s nothing Katie, Matt, or any of their clique can do to hurt you. I’ll help as much as I can; if you want to listen to music again during lunch we can do that, if you want to.
RockinHolly83: i’d like that, but let’s keep it low key for a bit? if matt or katie catches wind there might be trouble, i’m more concerned that you’ll get in trouble or hurt.
PaintedBlack05: They don’t own me. They don’t own you. To be blunt, I can’t stand bullies. Ask Will sometime about how I got him away from some seniors who were trying to stuff him in a trash can when he was a freshman. I admit I’m not great at standing up for myself, but I’m not going to just stand by and watch my friends get hurt.
RockinHolly83: again, i appreciate you sticking up for me. i can handle some of this myself, but i think i need to distance myself from katie and that group of friends. i'm already being told that i am making a big mistake dumping matt, that he’s going to have a great life and career and that i could easily marry him and have the big house, nice car, kids, and all that.
PaintedBlack05: I don’t know you very well, but I’d wager you want something else out of life than that.
RockinHolly83: you’re right, that’s not something i really want. i don’t know what i really want just yet but i don’t want to be someone’s trophy wife. i can’t put my finger on it but i want something different than the big house, picket fence and kids. i want to live my life for a while and figure my own things out.
PaintedBlack05: I think that’s a better way to go about it than to let someone else dictate what you’re going to do the rest of your life. We’ve got some time to figure this life thing out, but we have to do it by ourselves and for ourselves. I hate to leave, but we’re about ready to go out to dinner and I don’t think I’ll be on later.
RockinHolly83: thanks for chatting with me, it’s helped a bit. talk to you at lunch tomorrow? Have a good dinner!
