Slavery in Uraz lands through history: an overview

In prehistory, might made right, and so Uraz held humans as slaves. There is only speculation and interpretation of oral history and archeological sites to glean what this relationship was in pre historic times. The generally accepted theory is that Uraz domesticated humans and kept them as domestic slaves, laborers, and breeding stock. It is likely in those times a human’s protections and privileges were based on his favor in his master’s eyes and little else. A slave that was fully submissive and served his master personally probably was well cared for and protected by his master’s proximity and doting. A field laborer or quarry slave may not even know who his master is, and live a substance lifestyle in a corral with other low level slaves, at the mercy of an overseer or stronger slaves.

The first records of slave law are the massive carved slave-stones. Carved from single massive pieces of stone, there are several existing rings of so called slave stones. How many stones form a slaveing-ring depends on their age. The older rings have a tendency to have less, newer might have more. The older rings often have five. The massive column like stones are arrayed in a circle, and each has carvings or runic inscriptions representing he five core ‘promises of slavery’. The promises of slavery have changed some over time, but at the core are: water, food, protection, guidance, and intimacy. some times in antiquity the promises are instead listed as threats that free humans face: Thirst, Hunger, dangerous-forest, foolish-ness, lust-need. ‘Dangerous-forest’ is generally used in this style, but ‘cold-damp’ is often used as well, or simply ‘wolves’ . The intention of this style of stone is to show wayward humans the benefits of submitting to the Uraz. Now we will discuss the promises.

Water and food:

In typical Uraz style, this is two separate items, even if they are the exact same importance as each other. The newer written versions spell out that a slave will only be thirsty if his master’s house-kin are thirsty/hungry. Implicate is that the master is first, the house-kin are second, and the slaves are third. Interestingly, free persons in the house that are not house-kin are after the slaves in this order.

Protection:

This one is interpreted in different ways, but generally means physical protection from environmental dangers, be it cold, wild animals, or attack. Understood as ‘your master will provide and protect you’.

Guidance:

In Uraz culture, humans are considered wayward and foolish. This promise is that of correction, punishment, and education. It promises to set men on the proper path, and train out any willfulness, disrespect, or foolishness that plague human kind.

Intimacy:

The promise of sexual attention. A slave will be looked after in always including intimacy and sexually. A heterosexual male may not like they way his needs are met, but they are met.

This system remained in place with little change for millennia. There were rules enacted by lesser chiefs, kings and rulers, but they applied to there domain singularly, and generally were local addendum to the promises, and in the same spirit. The promises were codified again in written law as runic inscription became vogue, and some additional promises were added occasionally, but again no real changes took place.

The first el change came in the mid 1700s, as Uraz rulers wishing to stave off European intervention accepted they would need to address the question of slavery of captured humans. Several clans gathered together to proclaim some exclusions: that humans captured in battle with signatory European nations would be ineligible for slaving. Though this did little to stave off European expansion, it. Did set a president for the tribes to work together, and limits on human captivity.

The next major change came in the wake of the British invasion. The fledgling colonial government quickly realized that the cooperation they had now wold dissolve instantly if the humans born in to slavery were freed. The best that could be arranged was all recently war-slaves would be freed, and no new captives could be enslaved. The 1789 constitution as it was known formed the basis for much of future Uraz imperial law. Provisions that stated captives could not be raped or enslaved were enacted. This was initially met with great internal criticism, with initial widely held beliefs that Uraz would run low of humans needed for reproduction, and start the final decline of the Uraz race. But the traditional tribal orders and practices were not needed much longer, and captive-slaves were not needed, as over the last 100 years, internal slave breeding became self sufficient to supply enough females for Uraz reproduction.

The foundation of Imperial Ur in 1848 with the creation of the first Imperial family, and the final coronation of the First emperor in 1851 made it clear a new constitution would be needed. Using the 1789 constitution as a basis, the first emperor codified slave law in greater detail, with many more amendments to keep the slave laws current as the decades passed. The 1852 Imperial constitution assured every slave the rights of the five promises, and held the slave owner at peril if he did not keep those promises. There were limitations on punishments, definitions of abuses, and requirements on slave training and handling. Later amendments placed requirements on slave markets and conditions, and status of slaves that were ‘between ownership’.

By 1900 the slave law in Imperial Ur was detailed, and would not permit war-slaves unless granted by imperial decree, but it did provided a ‘captive-servitude’ status for captured humans. Captive servitude allowed a non Slave born to be kept in a slave like state. They would belong to the state and be used for various non-household tasks, such as military auxiliary services (cooks, cleaners, loading supply trains, coaling ships, ect.) They were closely protected from rape, with strict laws and regulations in place to prevent, and if violated, severely punish any who broke this rule. It was well felt by Uraz that stories of returning soldiers and sailors having been raped while in captivity would quickly lead to the downfall of the new imperial state.

There were provisions for any captive to consent to sexual intercourse with a Uraz, however once it was given, it could not be taken back. Once a human in captive-servitude submitted sexually he would be available for the remainder of his captivity. That captivity would last until the conflict was over and a peace was signed. If the Uraz were victorious, that peace treaty would likely stipulate Uraz empire granting enslavement all the curently held captives of defeated nations. If there negotiators were skilled, or the situation unfavorable for Uraz empire, the captives would be returned.

Captives were generally kept in chastity, enforced by steel, and even restraints if needed. Usually trained in to units commanded by Uraz officers fond of leather straps or wooden canes. Without a doubt, humans trained in to such units would be unable to resist, with deeply rooted slave traditions and infrastructures to keep slaves under control working just as well on captives. Any particularly difficult captives would be separated for extensive training, and placed in a domestic service role in an military barracks, or a naval fortress garrison. It was found having a will-full and resistant captive helped relieve the boredom of barracks life for Uraz soldiers.

Captives could face rape as a punishment if they themselves behaved poorly enough. Just as slave law both protected slaves and laid out duties to their masters, captive law placed strictures on the captives, and failing to uphold them placed them in peril of being strapped, caned, whipped, raped, enslaved, castrated, or even all of the above, depending on the offense.

However rape laws primarily applied to Uraz forcing a Human, and often fail to cover human on human rape unless the sexual encounter is between male and female, or the victim is seriously injured. One male captive raping another male captive is under most circumstances not legaly considered a crime, and perfectly allowable - in most cases if a male has only been penetrated by a human, they are still considered virgin by Uraz.

A peace time program was created to allow Uraz to have or lease prisoners from human prisons to keep as captives for the duration of their prison sentences. This proved popular in human lands for reducing the costs of incarceration or dealing with political prisoners, because as captives there were no communication or visitation with the outside world.

By the 1855 the only way to bring in new slaves from outside was for a human captive to choose to submit to enslavement. This process was formalized in 1901 with an Imperial edict on the matter, after several diplomatic roes regarding young ‘heterosexual’ men, who after spending time as volunteers in Uraz foreign naval reserve, chose to become homosexual slaves in the Empire. In most cases the families later insisted there boys were always heterosexual, and had been turned gay, then enslaved against their will. Newsprint pearl clutched or agitated, journalists yellowed, ambassadors and embassies wrote letters, and the world continued to spin.

The imperial Edict, known as “the golden rose decree” was a detailed treatise by the emperor on requirements to prove the human entering slavery was doing so of his own will, and allowable methods, what constitutes coercion, and ideals for how a human should enter slavery, as well as expanding on the wonder and sublime of any human that submits so fully, and of his own will and decision to Uraz kind. Such humans were described as golden roses , blossoms with imperfections and unique qualities, immortalized in the golden chains of a slave who chooses to be a slave. Only willing slaves should wear collars, chains, and wrist-irons of gold.

The requirements for a human to give his full submission involved him being returned to his homeland (or nearest neutral safe port) providing him with money, a passport, and a hotel room. Two days later a carriage will be sent to offer him a ride to the port where a he may board a small coastal boat that will sail to international waters. Once in international waters, a launch will be crewed and put in the water, with instructions to return to the port they just left, and the human will be ordered into the launch. The human would then have to climb a rope net back on to the ship if he wanted to be a slave. If he did nothing at all he would be returned to port.

The human -still free - would then have to wait for the vessel to arrive at the edge of Uraz waters. Several Uraz would attempt to dissuade the human, and offer him a return trip home. If he turned this down, he would then have to place his passport, Identification and papers, and any possessions in to a canvas sack. Documents renouncing his citizenship, rights, and protections, as well as affirming his desire to be enslaved by the Uraz were read aloud and then signed by him and witnesses. He would be ordered to strip nude on the deck, and place his clothes in the sack as well. His value as a slave in gold and silver coins was then placed in the sack. He was handed the sack and ordered to carry it around the deck of the ship once clockwise. A launch would pull up to the ship and an Uraz Imperial representative

he was told if were to keep the sack and go back to his cabin, he could keep his freedom, his personal things, and his value (the coins). Or he could give the sack to the representative, (who would deliver it to the nearest embassy of the humans former nationality.) and a guard would place steel manacles and chains on him, and he would become a slave.
