Testing Phase: Data Collection
Kajjex gets to unwind with some sex and cuddling after a long day of dealing with extra-dimensional visitors. Once awake, the out-of-town visitors ask for his aid once more. Now he has to decide if he's done enough, if he should get involved, and if it's worth it to provide more help...
"So... what do you think?"
Mykksa stared at it, a skeptical furrow in her brow. "I dunno, Kajjex. It's... a lot."
His ears drooped. "But not too much... right? I wouldn't have shown it to you if I thought it wouldn't fit. I figure I'd make adjustments along the way."
"I'm not so sure that'll be enough. It's a lot of junk to stuff into something so small and tight. You can't just eyeball it and hope you can jam it in with no issue."
"I didn't eyeball it," he insisted. "I made sure to measure it beforehand."
She looked up at him, surprised. "Wait, even before you invited me in?"
"Well... I mean, I had to be sure," he admitted, blushing and smiling sheepishly. "I didn't want to just spring it on you unless you were interested, so I made sure that size wasn't going to be an issue – that way we could get to work quickly."
"Hmm... can I touch it?"
He half-smiled. "That's why you're here. Don't worry, it won't break. It's not too heavy."
She hesitated, her hand slowly inching forward, palm held up. "Okay, if you're sure."
Click.
With a careful heft she lifted it up, holding eye level. Kajjex waited, leaning against the workbench, but after a few moments she smiled and nodded.
"Y'know, I was concerned at first, but this might actually work."
His ears perked up hopefully. "Yeah?" After weeks of worrying, it was better news than he could have hoped for. "As an expert opinion, you mean?"
"Yep!"
She held VAL-A's command crystal up with a wide grin. "It's pretty big, standard for your complex golem algorithms, but with the right adjustments it should be able to slot into the frame perfectly!"
The breath Kajjex had been holding came out as a relieved sigh, his head drooping slightly. "Thank the Alchemy! I thought I was being too ambitious, so I wanted a real expert's opinion. I've been straining my mind trying to figure out how much it'll cost, let alone if it'll even work." He reached out and grabbed her hand, shaking it. "I appreciate your input. You have no idea how much it means to me to get an expert opinion on this. I'm sorry I pulled you aside to--"
"Nah, don't mention it," she grinned, punching his arm playfully. "This wasn't what I was expecting when you invited me in, but I'm always happy to discuss golemancy with other interested geniuses." She leaned against the counter, looking around. "Besides, I was a little curious about how you spruced the place up, what with Preeke letting you live here. It's not bad at all."
The apartment had undergone moderate changes since Preeke had offered it to Kajjex. With his new job with the Telumarx krewe, his practice sessions with the club, and getting VAL-A repaired, there hadn't been much time to purchase equipment, furniture, or decorations; though he'd brought his college banner with him and hung above his workbench. Still, Preeke was open to "borrowing" furniture from the other unused rooms, as they had been collecting dust in the years that he'd taken over the establishment. It only amounted to a decent desk, a couple of softer pillows and a few rugs, but it felt more like home every time he came back. Now it was comfortable enough that he was happy to invite Mykksa inside. She had insisted it was only to ensure that he followed Preeke's order to get some sleep – though there was a definite implication that it would involve sex to tire him out.
Instead, they had almost immediately start collaborating on his damaged golem.
He nodded, pleased with how it was coming along. "I had to busy myself with it when I took breaks from fixing my golem." He straightened up, giving her a formal, polite bow. "Any help or advice you could give me would be great, I'd be happy to return the favor somehow."
"Don't be ridiculous, Kajjex," she laughed, setting the core down. "This is what friends do. They help you move in to your apartment, help you find jobs, boost your confidence, give you some extra furniture – and sometimes you sleep with them, too," she added with a wink. "I'm more than comfortable giving advice based on my expertise in golemancy."
"I'll definitely reach out when you have the time," he said gratefully. "Preeke said you were a font of good ideas."
"Ha, well... I'm known to have a few every once and a while," she replied coyly.
He considered her for a moment, taking a seat on the workbench. "May I ask you something, if it's not too personal?"
"Sure," she replied, looking curious.
"How did you come to work at the club for Preeke?" He added quickly, "if it's your own business, you don't need to explain. Alchemy knows you don't need to answer to anybody for mixing a good cocktail."
"Did he not tell you?" she asked, cocking her head to one side.
"He mentioned that you introduced him to Myrreah and Tawdd, and I gather that he must have been a long-time colleague. I don't want to assume that every employee at the club was just someone he wanted to help," he reasoned.
"I was," she said, shrugging. "But I came to him first. He was someone I'd known through a..." She trailed off, and for a moment Kajjex thought he saw a flicker of pain in her eyes. But the moment passed and she beamed at him. "It was through someone we were mutually close to. I was the contact that allowed him to submit his discovery of a stronger alloy for golem frames. I was out of work a few years later. By that time Preek had inherited the club from his predecessor. I decided to apply and put my knowledge of alchemy, alcohol, and mixology to good use." She chuckled. "I was such a meek little skritt back then."
"Meek?"
"If there's one thing I give credit to Preeke for more than anything else, it's that he knows how to bring the best out of anyone." She took a seat on the other end of the workbench, kicking her legs idly. "I'm still kind of an introvert, outside of the workplace. It's why I never picked up the courage to perform on stage, the way my sister Myrreah did. When you work the bar, you're busy taking orders and serving drinks that interaction is limited, but frequent. He worked the bar with me for a couple of months, slowly letting me take the lead on interacting with the clients. I didn't even realize how well I was doing until he faked being sick and left me to work the bar alone. He'd helped me cultivate enough confidence and put me through the motions that I was ready before I ever believed I was."
"I never would have guessed," he said, his head cocked. "You always seem so forward and friendly, ready to engage in conversation. Did you even have trouble with Dusya, given she's from 'out of town?'"
"Her? Nah, she's a sweet old lady," she chuckled. "She has a good head on her shoulders. Even when she was chewing out her reptilian buddy, she was more like a stern grandmother than a disciplinarian. But even if she wasn't, I would have been fine. I've gotten good enough that even the occasional charr and norn patrons don't intimidate me. If Preeke hadn't taken a chance on me, I might have taken much longer to open up."
"Rax said he's only like that with people he likes," he recalled. "So... it's not every employee, then? Just those he's known long enough?"
She smiled at him. "You, me, Rax, and the lovebirds are the exception. Most of the other employees are friends and trusted workers. He's kind and outgoing to everyone; but he's not nearly as close to them as he is to us. It's private, though. I can only say that there's a connection between who we are, and why he's supported us. So if he hasn't told you his motivations – if he ever tells you – don't ask him."
"No?"
"No. It's not my place to reveal anything about him, that he hasn't revealed to you yet. He may tell you someday – in fact, I'm certain he will." She reached out and touched his shoulder. "For now, please believe that he only means well, and that he believes you're worth it. Not for what you can give him, beyond being a good friend; but for who you can be for yourself, and for others who might need you."
For a few moments his thoughts lingered on Preeke. Knowing that he wasn't the only other asura that Preeke had gone out of his way for made him feel a little better, that he wasn't being pitied for his shortcomings or substandard circumstances. Though Preek had yet to reveal where this compassion and support stemmed from, Kajjex could only see his involvement as genuine by now. While the curiosity remained, Mykksa's words were enough to alleviate what remained of his doubts. He nodded, hopping off the workbench. "I'll keep it in mind. He's more than earned my trust; I'll have to reward his trust by doing the best I can for him."
"That's all he'll ever ask of you, Kajjex," she said, giving him a smile that he returned.
"You know... I think he did an exemplary job helping you out. It seems like his way of building your confidence worked like a charm."
She blushed, grinning. "I hope so." She gave a tug at her form-fitting attire. "The uniform helps. When you're showing your ass off while mixing drinks, you get that little surge of confidence. Which I'm going to need right now."
His brow furrowed. "Why? What's happening right now?"
She raised an eyebrow, her smile coy. She hopped off the workbench and sauntered over to him, her hips moving in just the perfect way to emphasize how little she was really wearing. Her leotard – no longer hidden by the apron she'd worn earlier – fit perfectly over her slim, nubile form, accentuating her ass and hips.
"I told Preeke I would make sure you would get some rest," she said in a quieter, suggestive voice. "But I figure you still have energy to burn. And I did say that I was eager to get a sample of what Myrreah got to taste first. I don't want to wait until Preeke decides to open this place as a brothel, just to get on the waiting list. I'm willing to bet you're not interested in waiting, either."
He let out a slightly nervous chuckle, trying not to feel too flustered by her advances. "Well, yeah... I wasn't banking on it, but I thought that offer might still stand. I wasn't expecting you to make a move so soon. Not that I'm rejecting it, of course!" he added quickly. "Are you... sure you want to--"
She silenced him with a pair of fingers on his lips, and this close he could smell the fragrant sweetness of oils and makeup on her skin – and a familiar scent of female arousal. He'd always regarded her as cute, but now that she was openly flirting with him, he could more comfortably appreciate just how attractive she was. Unlike other asura females she sported larger breasts, adding appreciable curves to her upper body; a shape that was similar to her hips and thighs, the shape of her mons pressed against the supple, form-fitting fabric.
"I know what it's like to live second-guessing another person's kindness," she said. "But I know I speak for the entire club when I say that you'll never have to worry that we're misleading you." Her smile was no longer sexy, but gentle and warm. "I'd like to offer what Preeke, Tawdd, and Myrreah did; friendship with benefits. I want to see the same confidence you had on stage, up close and personal. So... I suggest that you pretend I'm a customer who is purchasing your services and open to anything; and that you're a romantic male escort who knows how to get a girl out of her clothes – show me that confidence."
She put a hand on his chest and he swallowed, looking up at her as his heart raced. In the few seconds of silence that followed, however, he realized that the pulsing he felt was not his alone. There was a trembling in her hands, a shallowness to her breathing. A sudden wave of realization struck him.
"You're nervous, too?"
"I'm fucking terrified, Kajjex," she admitted with a nervous giggle. "I'm not a stranger to sex, but as much as I want this with you, I'm a little... intimidated."
For a split second Kajjex wanted to back down, uncertain that he could meet such needs so quickly, but as he gazed back into her eyes he found he could not. Her admission of being nervous, perhaps even being afraid of what was happening and what she was feeling, sparked a desire to calm her down. Deciding not to lose any more time, lest she lose all her nerve and bail first, he steadied his own nerves and smiled back, pulling her into his his arms and touching noses together. She offered only slight hesitance, gasping softly as she allowed herself to be held, her hopeful teal eyes staring into his.
"You don't have to be scared," he said, smiling warmly, his voice calm and kind. "I'd be glad to take care of you today and tonight."
To his ears his words did not come across as awkward, but heartfelt – perhaps even a little suave. Judging by the look in her eyes and how she seemed to relax in his arms, Mykksa seemed to be comfortable in his hold. He took only a moment trying to remember what Tawdd and Myrreah had done when he'd spent time in their company, before making his decision and selecting his avenue of attack – aiming his lips directly at her neck. She gasped softly, shivering and letting herself lean back as he kissed and nipped along her shoulder and collarbone, stopping as he met the fabric collar that kept her leotard in place. It took little more than tearing the velcro straps around her neck for it to fall away, exposing her neck and nearly falling past her breasts before she caught it, a deep blush painting her cheeks. He resumed barely a moment later, limiting her responses to cooing and gasping as his lips grazed along her neck and throat, moving upwards – all the while he used one hand to begin undoing his shirt, leaning her backwards and shrugging it off in one smooth move. Her hands, meanwhile, unbuckled his trousers, causing them to fall and pool around his ankles and leaving him in just his boxers. The movement caused her hips to slide against him, a quiet squeak pouring from her as her clothed mons ground against his bulge. He held back his groan, meeting the movement with a flex of his hips; once again, he elicited a gasp and moan from her, a hand clapping over her mouth as she tried to stifle the sound. He grinned and took her hand away from her lips.
"Now don't be silly," he chided her warmly. "You suggested I roleplay a male escort. How am I supposed to do my job if you're putting up obstacles?"
"W-what do you me--"
He cut her off with a firm, passionate kiss, keeping his hands on her waist and waiting to see her reaction. Though she went rigid and wide-eyed from the act it only took a moment for her to practically melt into him and reciprocate, her arms hanging around his neck and her hips wiggling side to side, pushing her mound against the concealed bulge. Sensing her eagerness, he backed up little by little, keeping her in his arms as he blindly walked backwards, until the back of his foot bumped against one of the sitting cushions. He stopped, breaking the kiss and lifting her up in his arms, marveling at how light she was; she chirped in surprise at how easily he did it, clinging to him as he took a seat on the cushion and let her slide easily into his lap.
As she captured his lips again in another kiss, he could feel the warmth from her loins, a reminder that only three layers of clothing separated his cock from spearing into her heated cleft; could feel the soft, firm, and flexible parts of her body as her thighs squeezed against his hips, covered breasts squished against his bare, firm chest. He broke the kiss, getting to his feet, holding her tight and laying her out on the cushion, then began to undo his trousers as she stared up at him, breathing heavily.
"You good?" he asked quietly.
"Yeah," she sighed pleasantly, a shy smile on her lips. "That was... you're quite a talented kisser."
"I've had practice," he chuckled.
She shifted in his lap, her eyes drawn to the bulge in his boxers. It dawned on him that at best she had only seen his performance from the other side of the club, and that while she could guess his cock-to-body size ratio from her vantage point, this was the first time she'd see it up close and personal. He made no movement as she reached out with a trembling hand, pulling back the waistband of his boxers. The moment his heavy cock flopped out of his trousers and slapped against her belly her jaw dropped, gaping at the throbbing length in awe. "F... fuck... that's... I-I don't think I can," she breathed, her voice and smile as excited as they were nervous. "That's... a lot of junk to stuff into something so small and tight."
"Are we talking about the golem core again, or my cock?" Kajex teased, chuckling. Without giving her any warning, he held her close and laid her down on the cushion, getting to his knees. "I promise to go slow for you, miss. You can trust me."
He slid his hands around her sides, tugging at the leotard and slipping it down, off of her body, revealing the mons of her pussy. At a brief glance he could see her face nearly beet-red with a blush, but she made no objection or movement to dissuade him as he leaned in, grazing his thumbs along her swollen netherlips. A quiet, trembling moan fluttered from her. She squirmed, spreading her legs apart from him, giving him a single nod of acknowledgment.
With her consent confirmed, Kajjex leaned in and spread her lips apart, revealing her folds and moist hole. With as much care as he could, he slid a single finger into her cleft, curling his finger up and gently scraping the roof of her tunnel. She chirped and arched her back, her fingers digging into the cushion beneath her. The sound was enough to make his loins stir, though he ignored his own arousal for the time being, exploring the young woman's body. To the untrained eye, it would have looked like any other pussy, no different from Myrreah's; but to Kajjex, the subtle differences seemed more pronounced. She felt warmer, tighter, and far more wet. Wet enough that he managed to slide a second finger into her pussy without difficulty, eliciting another moan and causing her to shiver.
It was erotic to behold, a little more personal than his time spent with Tawdd and Myrreah as he teased and fingered her, using his thumb to circle around her clit. Every caress along the bud with the pad of his thumb made her twitch, her inner walls clamping around his fingers. He had to admit, looking at it now – she had a point in him having quite a lot to stuff into something so small and tight. Undeterred, he quickly looked around and spotted a bottle of lubricant, something he kept on hand for evenings when Preeke was feeling affectionate. He applied a healthy dollop to his palm and fingers, suppressing a chuckle as he noticed the lube was 'peach-flavored,' and set to work applying it to her netherlips.
She sat up, looking down at him curiously. "Kajjex, wha--"
"Easy there," he said gently. "Just getting you prepared."
With her cleft glazed in flavored lube, he leaned in and kissed her sensitive netherlips, pushing his tongue past her folds and a healthy portion of lube along with it. In minutes he was writing out the Krytan alphabet with his tongue, three times for each letter; lashing up and down, side to side, deeper and faster along her clit. Before he even reached 'd' she was moaning and pawing at his head, her hands rubbing over his ears. He shivered, trying to ignore her massaging his erogenous zone and spelling out 'f, g, h, and i' in quick succession. The taste was incredible, her nectar mixing perfectly with the lubricant into a sweet, mellow flavor. By the time he reached 'q' she was arching her back again, and his cock was achingly hard, a drooling with precum.
He has just reached 'w' when she cried out and squirmed, trying to close her legs, but his grip was tight and his strength more than enough to hold her in place as she was brought to a powerful orgasm. He backed away just in time, as a deluge of nectar sprayed from her pussy and against his chin and chest. He grinned up at her, feeling her inner thighs quiver beneath his fingers. Mykksa gasped, sounding as if she had just finished a long sprint, her lust-addled gaze staring down at him. She shivered, smiling as she struggled to get her breathing back to normal. "W... wow... Myrreah... wasn't fucking with me after all," she purred, shivering. "You really are a quick study at this."
"Like I said, I've had practice," Kajjex replied, wiping his chin and standing back up. "You need a break?"
"I... yeah, I... damn," she sighed, wiping sweat off her brow and sitting up. "I followed you in so I could wear you out, and you got me panting like a raptor in heat. But I'm still good to go." She attempted to stand, nearly tipping over until Kajjex caught her. "S-sorry," she squeaked, blushing. "I'm good, just getting the feeling back in my legs."
"Take your time," Kajjex suggested.
"Nah, I'm still the customer – and the customer wants that dick," she said, grinning. She put her hand on his chest, rubbing it gently – then pushing him onto the cushion with a shove. Kajjex landed easily on his backside, and before he could sit up fully Mykksa had climbed into his lap, nuzzling his cheek. "You've treated me so well today, Kajjex. Let me do this for you. You deserve to relax after having a rough night."
"I'll be alright," he assured her, though he was no less thankful for her affection. "Tell you what – we'll make this a dual effort. Just you and me, working together towards a common objective. A private, one-on-one collaboration."
"Mmm yeah...? Color me interested. What are the project goals?" she purred, kissing his cheek and reaching down, stroking his cock.
Kajjex groaned, feeling hot precum ooze from his tip, massaged into the shaft by Mykksa's grip. "Mmm... multiple aims. We'll say... physiological satisfaction. Nerve stimulation. Mutual, anatomical exploration."
She giggled, reaching down and pressing his cock against her stomach; a perfect preview for how deep inside her it would be. "Maybe add... recreational procreation?"
Kajjex shivered, letting out a sigh as she squeezed the base of his shaft. "You h--hahh... heard that from Myrreah, I take it."
"It's a hot kink to have. You won't find me objecting. Asuran birth rates are low enough as it is. A stud like you should be doing his part." She pushed him onto his back, sliding up against him and sharing a kiss, now positioned so his cock was between her thighs.
His hands stroked her back, along her curves until they rested on her ass, giving it a gentle squeeze while he kissed her neck. "So... I guess we'll be forgoing any contraceptive rubbers."
"Regrettably," she moaned, wiggling herself into position until the head of his cock was pressed against her netherlips. "I didn't come prepared for an impromptu... collaboration," she giggled. "But then again... knowing the research goals, I don't think we need them."
He stared up at her, still smiling, but his voice clear and serious. "You're sure?"
She nodded, smiling back. "I'm sure, Kajjex. Like I said... you deserve a little reward. And I'm happy to give it to you."
She eased back onto his cock, the thick, fat head spreading her netherlips apart as she whimpered in bliss. Kajjex grit his teeth, holding back a groan and sitting up, the movement causing her to slide down his shaft and into his lap in one, smooth motion. Mykksa's back arched and a low, long moan poured out of her, grinding down into him. Tension and tightness wrapped around Kajjex's cock, her inner walls bearing down around him, trembling and fluttering pleasantly. Every heartbeat caused his cock to ache and throb, pushing against those inner walls as if to strain against its grip. Kajjex slid his hands up her back, keeping her supported as she leaned against him. Just from the sound of her breathing and moaning, he could tell she was trying to adjust to his girth.
"Easy, Mykksa," he murmured into her ear. "You did it. You took every inch. Just relax and take your time."
"It's... big. It's like it's... filling up a space I never knew was there. Just give me a moment." She shuddered, leaning against him. Her face was halfway between pain and pleasure, her body trembling. "I'm... gonna start moving."
"I'm ready when you are," he assured her, kissing into her neck.
She began rubbing his chest a few times, her eyes admiring his build as she gripped his shoulders. Biting back a moan, she raised herself off his lap slightly, her tight pussy gripping around his cock as she tried to pull away from it. Kajjex held her hips tight, helping her movements by lifting her up, his prick throbbing, drooling more precum as her inner walls massaged his length. Once half of his cock had been removed she descended, settling back down into his lap, grinding into it. Both asura gasped, their bodies trembling as they began a slow but steady rhythm, their movements matched and complementing each other, gradually increasing in tempo.
It didn't take long for Mykksa's groaning and strained expression to fade into soft sighs and a look of lust-glazed bliss. Certain that she could handle him at this point, Kajjex laid on his back, steady hands resting on her thighs as he flexed his legs and back, rocking his hips up to meet each descent. Not a single word was needed for them to communicate their desires and goals, limiting themselves to erotic vocalizations; a groan here, a mewl there; a gasp every time the head of his cock bumped into the furthest reaches of her pussy; a hiss every time her inner walls gnawed around his throbbing maleness. It was all they needed to convey direction, with Mykksa's hips and legs working harder to keep bouncing on his prick, and Kajjex's efforts from below helping propel her back upwards.
A sheen of sweat built on Mykksa's skin, her face flushed red. Their eyes met and she smiled, panting. "Doing... pretty good, yeah?"
"Yeah," Kajjex agreed, gritting his teeth as she deliberately squeezed harder around his shaft. "Alchemy, you're so fucking tight..."
"I'm... I can't..." She shivered and slowed down, leaning over and placing her hands on his chest. "F-fuck... it's too much, I can't--"
"Then let me," Kajjex offered, sitting up slowly and sliding his arms around her. "As I recall, you were going to try to get me tired out. I can't do that if I'm lying around. Don't worry... I'll get both of us there. Didn't we agree this would be a dual-effort collaboration?" he teased.
She offered no resistance as he stood, keeping her held close as they switched positions so her back was to the cushioned backrest, pinned between it and his strong body. Another glance into each other's eyes compelled them to kiss once again, sharing a brief moment of affection between their warm bodies. She giggled, cupping his face. "Careful, stud – you don't wanna turn into a heartbreaker."
"Never," he chuckled. "I care for my friends. That includes you."
Once again in control of the situation, Kajjex resumed their pace, putting effort behind his trained back and hips. She wrapped her legs and arms around him, moaning into his neck as he bred her, trying to match his vigor and strength. Even if she couldn't quite manage it, he certainly appreciated the effort; just from flexing her thighs and stomach, it was causing her inner walls to massage around his cock. In minutes their bodies were covered in sweat, the noises of the copulation becoming more lurid by the second. From steady clap of his balls against her ass, to her song-like moans and his low groans, he could have described it as a private, sexual concert.
The ache in his balls burned deep, the finale visible on the horizon, yet Kajjex found himself in no hurry to reach it, holding on to his waning stamina for as long as he was able to. But as Mykksa continued to moan and writhe against him, crying out his name, Kajjex had to privately concede that Preeke had a point – going over a full day without sleep was taking its toll. A flare of bliss jolted through his throbbing length, slowing him down for a few moments as he groaned and tried to regain himself. "Getting closer," he told her, panting. Sweat rolled down his brow and face, his body tensing up. "Where--"
"Depends," she said with a wild, lusty grin and a glint in her eyes. "Want a mess to clean up? Or do you want to impregnate a cute asura girl who's asking for it? I'm your 'customer' after all," she teased.
He grit his teeth, his arousal surging at her playfulness. He fought exhaustion, pumping his hips harder and faster, feeling the tip of his thick cock reaching near her womb. He cupped her face with one hand. "You're sure?" he groaned.
"Inside!" she chirped. "Please!"
"Ffffuuuck!" he groaned, her words doing nearly as much to push his buttons as her tight, slick, gripping inner walls were. Some part of him – his ego or pride, perhaps – wanted to keep it up as long as he could. But as he stared into Mykksa's eyes he suddenly found himself not caring. He had nothing to prove, and the fact that she had chosen to be intimate with him didn't need to serve as validation. They were both getting what they wanted. Seconds later, she hit her climax, and left him with no more reasons to hold out.
It came with a sudden gasp and a cry, her inner walls fluttering and clenching around his girth as if to milk it of the seed soon to come. It send waves of pleasure through his nerve endings, quickly consuming what remained of his endurance, heralded by a low groan. The ache in his balls flared up and disappeared suddenly, drawing up against his clenching perineum as they unloaded. His cock swelled and throbbed, the flow of spunk coming in thick gouts that painted her inner walls alabaster and flooded her womb in white. What excess could not fit, oozed around his girth and down his balls, pooling on the cushion beneath them. The surge in ecstasy was so intense that by the time the flow ebbed away and he regained his senses, he found his lips locked with Mykksa's, having somehow found them while in the midst of his climax. The afterglow settled in, the pair holding each other close as their bodies relaxed
He broke the kiss, panting and smiling at her. "I hope... this service... was to your satisfaction," he teased.
"I'll be sure... to leave a five-star review," she purred, nuzzling his cheek. "And... thank you for this."
"It was my pleasure," he replied, wrapping his strong arms around her.
With nowhere else to be for the time being, Mykksa had accepted Kajjex's offer to stay and get some sleep with him (though only after two more rounds). There was something pleasant about about having a warm body to cuddle with while undergoing REM sleep, something Kajjex had only ever experienced with Preeke. Holding Mykksa in his arms felt like he was protecting something, or holding something valuable to him. He could not say for sure if there was any spark between them, but it was enough that he was thankful for her presence.
He finally woke six hours later, his limbs stiff but otherwise feeling fine. Mykksa was yawning, rubbing her eyes and pulling the sheets over her head. He smiled, rubbing her back.
"Sleeping in?"
"Mmm... yeah, hope you don't mind," she yawned. "I stayed up longer than I should have."
"You're welcome to stay as long as you'd like," he offered, leaning in and kissing her cheek. "Shower, too, once I'm done."
She blindly reached for his shoulder, pulling him into a hug. "Thanks, Kajjex. This was so much fun. Hope we can do it again soon," she yawned, smiling up at him with sleepy eyes.
"Me too," he chuckled. "Sleep well."
He got up quietly, grabbing some workout clothes and krewe robes, tossing them into a satchel. Once his ensemble was ready he jumped in the shower, settling for a quick lather and rinse to wash away the sweat of his private 'performance' with Mykksa. By the time he was dried and dressed, only twenty minutes had passed, and she had fallen back asleep, snoring softly. He chuckled quietly, making sure his exit was as silent as possible as he left his apartment, his satchel over his shoulder.
The alleyway was empty, save for a messenger golem doing its run, with no sign of any 'out-of-towners' from the night before. He had neglected to check his chronometer before leaving, but by his reckoning it was probably only a little past noon. With nothing to do for the time being, he headed into the club's rear entrance, curious about its state.
Though technically closed, a handful of other asura were getting some cleaning done on the side stages. Raxio was overseeing them, a music player pumping out a nice beat as they worked. The charr paced next to the nearest stage, before spotting Kajjex and waving. "Hey, kid. You're here a little early, aren't you."
"I've got the day off from Telumarx and for the time being I don't have much to do," Kajjex replied, taking a seat on one of the tables near the center stage.
"Other than Mykksa, you mean," the charr smirked. Kajjex cleared his throat, looking away with a blush as Raxio laughed and gave him a friendly slap on the back. "No sense hiding it, Preeke and I had a bet against Myrreah and Tawdd that she'd stay at your place. Looks like I'm ten gold richer, then. If you're looking for Preeke, he just woke up a few minutes ago. He'll be on the floor soon enough. Center stage is clean, dried, and all yours if you want to get a bit of practice."
"I appreciate it, Rax," Kajjex said, hopping off the table and onto the stage. He set his satchel a few few away, pulling out his pair of magnet-sewed arm gloves and donning them. "Sooo... doing alright?" he asked carefully, glancing at Raxio.
The charr smirked. "Kid, it's been years since I've felt adrenaline from battle, and I still didn't have all my heart into it with that overgrown lizard last night."
"You might not want to call them--"
"Yeah, I know, I know," he sighed, leaning against the stage. "Racial slur and all. Point is, he wasn't much tougher than a Flame Legion skirmisher. He only had me on the back foot because I was unarmed. Hell, you kicked his ass, little guy."
"Only after he throttled me half to death," Kajjex scoffed, starting a low-intensity cadence around the pole. "And that was after I broke his sword. Did you at least get an apology?"
"I did, though he wasn't exactly happy about it," Raxio chuckled. "But I get it. It's not easy to get whipped in a fight and have to be the only one sorry about it. I'll lay off him if we have to deal with them again."
"I'm hoping that we don't," Kajjex muttered, leaping up and hanging from the pole. "I already helped them find their mount, and after having the crap beaten out of me, I'm not so keen to help them much more. Besides, I've got enough on my plate without out-of-town visitors, and two jobs I would like to keep secure."
The rear exit opened again, and Kajjex returned his focus to practicing his next cadence, getting a run up and grabbing the pole. With a grunt he twisted upwards until he could hook his leg around it, keeping himself suspended – until a cheerful voice nearly shattered his concentration.
"Hello Raxio and Kajjex! I hope you slept well!"
Kajjex flinched and nearly lost his grip, stopping himself from falling by grabbing the pole with his hands. He sighed in relief, looking around for the speaker while upside-down, until he spotted Sybil in the middle of the club dance floor – with Rico in tow, looking around the club with slight disdain. They were no longer wearing their combat attire, adorned in simpler clothing, though both were still armed. The asura cleaning the other platforms had almost completely stopped their work to stare at the alien newcomers, while Raxio looked like he was holding back a snicker. He managed to turn it into a polite smile, holding out a clawed hand to her.
"Sybil, right? Nice to have you here again, even if we're closed for now," he said, shaking her hand. He turned his gaze back to the cleaners. "Alright, quit gawking, folks. I catch any of you snitching about our out-of-town guests, I'm gonna use you for a match of keg brawl with a norn." The workers seemed to get the point and resumed their cleaning.
"And how are you, Kajjex?" Sybil asked, beaming up at him. "Feeling better?"
"Uh... yeah, I'm alright," he replied, unprepared for her sunny demeanor. "Thank you. I, uh... hope the rooms Preeke set up were alright."
"Just fine, thank you!" Sybil replied, giving him a thumbs up. "Smaller than most of us are used to, but more than enough for our purposes. Still, it's a bit out of the way, so I figured I'd explore a little and stave off some boredom."
"So what's this nonsense here?" Rico scoffed. "Some kind of practice? Not the kind I expect from someone trying to wield a blade."
"It's a performance pole," Kajjex replied, arching an eyebrow. "I'm guessing it's not something you guys have, where you're from?"
"Oh we have plenty of those, where we're from," Sybil replied. "Rico just hasn't seen one before."
The moogle's laugh was mocking, his smirk insufferable. "Wait, hold on – you mean the 'performance' you were bitching about last night was some kind of erotic poledancing, or something? You work here as a dancer, flaunting your body like some kind of undersized male model?"
Kajjex's brow furrowed, feeling anger and indignation stirring. He was a split-second away from providing a scathing retort when he saw Sybil's face transition from a beaming smile to an angry glare. The change was so abrupt that he held his tongue.
"And what, pray tell, is wrong with that, Rico?" she said in a sweet and dangerous voice. "I hope you're not saying you have a problem with erotic dancers, and by extension you have a problem with me. You know I perform on weekends during my time off."
"I, uh... of course not," Rico said uneasily, his smirk disappearing quickly. "I just... figured he had more engaging hobbies if he was really a warrior."
"My ability as a dancer and love for the practice doesn't make me any less of a fighter, so neither should his," she countered, folding her arms and looking less than pleased. Rico cast his eyes away, looking a little red-faced, while she turned a smile to Kajjex. "You enjoy it, right? I've always found it to be a thrill."
It took a few seconds for him to answer, touched as he was by Sybil's support and defense. "Oh, ah... yeah, I've grown to enjoy it quite a bit. It's been helping build confidence while complementing my workouts," Kajjex said, dropping from the pole to his feet. "Although I'd like to clear the air about my primary occupation. I'm not really a warrior – I'm a weapon-tester."
"But you carry a sword and have a fighter's build," Rico pointed out. "I may not know much about your people, but I haven't seen a single one that has a build or a weapon matching yours, apart from you and your boss. What, you lacked the brains so you stuck with brawn?" he smirked, while Sybil sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Maybe it's best not to speak of things you know little about," Kajjex retorted. "I could assume most moogles are troublemakers or thugs based on you and Montblanc, but tell me – why does someone as short as you carry a sword?"
"Moogle knights are some of our Ivalice's most celebrated heroes, and have been for centuries," Rico said proudly, folding his arms. "Pick any of our history's greatest tales and there'll be a moogle knight in them, nine times out of ten. I don't let my size dictate who I can or can't stand against, same as any Moogle knight." He gave the asura a smirk. "Just ask Deisel, I can keep up with the tallest and strongest in our clan."
Kajjex raised an eyebrow, resuming his cadences. "Is that a fact. So you're inspired by the heroes and legends of your world, and you seek to emulate them – or a part of them, at least." He leapt and swung his legs around the pole, keeping himself suspended without a hand to keep his grip. "Well... it's not the worst reason I've heard, at least. Though you could probably do without the arrogance – we have enough of that here in Rata Sum."
"'Not the worst reason?'" Rico repeated, his eyes narrowed. "Why, don't you have heroes among your people?"
"Depends on what you think would qualify as one," Kajjex grunted, flipping off the pole and landing. "Asura adventurers exist, but the bulk of them are mages of one sort or another; or golemancers, directing constructs or piloting combat suits into battle. But you're not going to find asura actively going out of their way to be heroes, or stories venerating them." He paused, considering. "Well... maybe a couple. But not many."
"So what motivated you to pick up a sword, then?" Sybil asked, looking curious. "I recall you talking about not wanting your people to be overdependent on magic. Why did you take it upon yourself to change things?"
Kajjex hesitated, deciding to conceal his lack of magical control with a half-truth. "I guess it always fascinated me more than magic. That's why I decided to break from the norm and become a hoplologist. I study combat and develop combat treatises as part of my research, while also testing weaponry."
"Give me a break," Rico scoffed. "You consider yourself a scholar?"
"Most asura are scholars, and follow some form of study," he replied sharply, leaning against the pole and folding his arms. It was one thing to be criticized by his own race for his chosen area of expertise, but it was a deeper dting to be mocked by a foreign sentient. "I happened to choose combat as my research focus. I'm also a weapon-tester for my krewe, so I know how to handle a blade. But I'm not a 'warrior' or a 'fighter.' I study wars and fights – what I do isn't for the purpose of engaging in them, it's for helping others understand them so they can protect themselves."
"But not protect others?" Rico pressed, scowling. "So you're smart and a coward."
"I don't have to explain myself, and I'm sure as hell not about to let someone insult me for my studies or interests, least of all you!" he snapped, his thoughts straying briefly to the Hylek and their nests weeks ago. "Besides... I kicked your ass, didn't I, 'knight?'" he added with a smirk.
Rico glared at him, his wings twitching irritably as he balled up his fists. "Well if you're looking for round two so we can settle things, I'd be happy to oblige!"
Kajjex's ears flared up and he jumped down from the stage, having had enough of the moogle. "Sure, we've got a dance floor, so let's dance, you oversized plush toy!"
Before either could take another step, they were picked up off the floor. Raxio easily scooped Kajjex under his arm, while Sybil sighed and grabbed Rico by the scruff.
"Whoops, the mice are at it again," Raxio chuckled. "Don't worry, I got mine."
"Take it easy, you two!" she said firmly. "Dusya figured there'd still be some bad blood between you, but this isn't the time or place for us to fight. We gain nothing by antagonizing one of the few people in this realm who can help us, Rico, so knock it off!"
"Who says we need this wannabe-warrior wanker's help?" Rico snapped, kicking his legs out and trying to wriggle out of her grasp. "We don't need a sword-carrying bookworm in our corner!"
"Good, because I have no intention of helping an itty-bitty imbecile like you anyway!" Kajjex spat back, squirming under Raxio's bicep. "I've got enough on my plate without putting my name on the Inquest's shit-list, but go right ahead if you're that desperate to end up on a vivisection table!"
The rear entrance opened again, drawing all eyes to it. Preeke sauntered in, whistling a tune and approaching them with a grin. "Hey guys. I see you're all getting along. Am I interrupting something?"
"Not at all, Boss," Raxio chuckled. "Just having a friendly chat, right kid?"
"Put me down, Rax!" Kajjex demanded.
"Don't mind him," the charr grinned, ruffling his hair. "He's just fussy 'cuz he had to tear himself outta Mykksa's arms. Don't forget to get our gold from Myrreah."
Preeke laughed and pumped a fist in the air. "Ha! I knew she couldn't resist! Alright, you can let him down, now. Let's try to keep the peace here, kid. Think happy thoughts – like Mykksa in your bed."
Kajjex blushed and groaned, fuming as the charr set him back on his feet, while Sybil did the same. "Guess we'll settle this another time, then," he growled, adjusting his shirt.
Rico scowled at him, rubbing his neck. "You can count on it."
"Enough," Sybil said firmly, turning her attention to Kajjex. "Please, Kajjex, we really do need your help, no matter how Rico feels about it. I'm willing to make amends for as long as it takes to make up for how my clan treated you last night, if it means you can lend us your aid."
"I just woke up," Kajjex groaned. For a few moments he went quiet, guilt starting to settle in. "... I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be insensitive to your situation, even if it's coming off that way. Even we asura know what it's like to lose friends and family to the Inquest. But this is not what I need to be dealing with right now. I'm just some guy who got caught up in this mess, and I just started getting my life back together. I don't want to risk losing that."
"You have our word that we will not bother you more than necessary," a voice said from behind Preeke. Dusya was shuffling towards them, stopping next to him and leaning on her staff, with Tekki and Deisel behind her. The nu mou peered at him gently, without a hint of criticism or disappointment in her eyes. "These are uncertain times, and there are elements of it out of our control, where our ways of life are likely to change no matter what we do. We're not asking you to be responsible for this change; we just wish to ask for your guidance, to make this easier and save lives. Can we at least talk for today, so we can better prepare ourselves for whatever difficulty lies ahead?"
"It's okay if you want to say no, Kajjex," Preeke said, approaching him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "I understand you not wanting further complications in your life. I intend to help them however I can, but that doesn't mean you have any obligation to do the same."
Kajjex stared at him, the guilt deepening with every second. "I... I don't know. What do you think I should do?"
Preeke shrugged. "I can't tell you what's in your heart, kid. That's something only you can answer. Figure that out, and I'm sure you'll know what to do."
Kajjex looked between the visitors, his brow furrowed. What irritation he felt from Rico's needling ebbed away into guilt and sympathy, and a desire to do some good for those who needed it. With a sigh, he nodded. "Alright... I'll at least talk."
"I knew you were a good kid," Preeke said proudly, squeezing his shoulder. He looked around the club at the other workers. "I'm paying double time today if you guys keep at it while keeping our guest's presence a secret – no telling anybody. I'm taking them to the speakeasy, be sure to clock out once you're done. Raxio, you're in charge for now. Put up a 'closed for today' sign while you're up here," he added, as he gestured for everyone to follow.
"Gotcha, Boss," Raxio nodded, heading for the entrance.
Preeke led them behind the bar and into the kitchen. Kajjex had only ever been in it once, and even now there seemed nothing out of the ordinary among the stoves, shelves, and sinks. Once they reached the far back of the facility, however, Preeke raised his hand against one of the stone walls. Everything up to his wrist seemed to disappear into the stone while it shimmered slightly. It wasn't until Kajjex heard the subsequent 'beep' and shifting of nearby stone for him to realize that section of stone was an active illusion, hiding the means to enter this secret part of the club. The floor next to him gave way in segments, lowering into a neat set of stairs that he gestured the others to follow him down.
"So what's this, then?" Deisel said as they followed. "Some secret drinkin' hole or summat? Got some kind of illegal goings-on down 'ere?"
"Not anymore, no," Preeke chuckled. "My predecessor actually used this room for private alcohol experiments involving oozes, during a time where ooze tonics were prohibited. He wanted to make this a private room for his planned brothel, but he could never get the idea off the ground. Now I use this as a kind of hidey-hole for when I need to have some privacy – and a few drinks."
He triggered a diode at the bottom of the stairwell, causing a series of light fixtures to illuminate the space. The stairwell led to a large room lined with sofas, a fully-stocked bar, a few card tables, and a holographic projector pointed at the far wall. He gestured everyone to follow, with Kajjex at the rear. Kajjex glanced back, watching as the steps slid back up into place on the upper floor, sealing them in. Each of them took a seat in the sofas or the bar, where Preeke started picking out bottles. "I'm having a drink, anybody want something?"
"Didn't you just wake up?" Kajjex pointed out, raising an eyebrow.
"Only if it's strong," Deisel said skeptically.
"Charr firebrand whiskey for you and Kajjex, then," Preeke grinned, pouring a trio of glasses. He passed them out, then turned his attention toward Tekki. "Now, have we any updates to share?"
"A few," Tekki answered, pulling a data pad out of her satchel. "Turns out the Inquest left the portal on longer than we thought, enough for several unidentified entities to cross into Tyria. There's no telling how powerful or dangerous they might be. No casualties or incidents have been reported so far, but if we can't see the problem it'll be hard to tackle it. Also, Shara from Clan Nutsy crossed over briefly for an update; a few civilians from Ivalice wandered through the portal out of curiosity, but have returned after a few of my krewe members and Peacemakers guided them back. Word is starting to get out that Ulta Metamagical is at the center of something big, which we've denied."
"They won't just take you at your word for it, I assume," Dusya muttured..
Tekki shook her head. "We've been announcing our plans for reality tunneling for about a year now. The Arcane Council funded us because our fractal of Tyria was on the losing end of the Mist War." The newcomers gave her a blank stare. "Sorry, that's... that would take a week to explain. The point is, the Arcane Council wanted us to breach other realities to search and extract new materials for study. They weren't all that concerned with whether those worlds were actually inhabited, but I neglected to mention any world or reality with it's own sentients – Ivalice included. As of now, they only know about the first incident, but not your origins."
"Is that still the case?" Kajjex asked.
"For the Arcane Council and Arcane Eye, it is – but if the Inquest knows, then that's not going to last." She reached into her pocket and drew a data crystal. "Is that projector still working, Preeke?" He nodded and gestured to a nearby dataport and console opposite of the projector. Tekki got behind the console and inserted the crystal into place, activating the projector; a map of the local area flickered to life on the far wall, with several patches of blue and red pulsing. "This is a map of Metrica Province and the Brisband Wildlands to the north," she explained. "The blue areas are the sites of college-affiliated labs and krewes; the red patches are Inquest facilities."
"There are quite a few Inquest locations," Sybil noted.
"Less than you'd think, actually," Tekki replied. "They aren't numerous – just large. But there's no real way to know which lab or labs here, if any, might have your people captive."
"So, we still have no place to start," Dusya sighed.
Preeke leaned forward, taking a sip of his drink and studying the map. "Well, no... but we can narrow things down." He set his drink aside and approached the console. "The Inquest usually don't bother with discretion if they can get what they want through violence, but from what you've been telling us about their operations, they're trying to be secretive about everything. So let's approach the problem from that angle. Eliminate all open-air labs, places where anybody could see their experiments." He leaned over Tekki, tapping a few keys on the console. Several red patches disappeared. "Then remove all low-security labs, places that don't have consistent patrols or checkpoints." Another few tapped keys and more red patches vanished, leaving only three.
Kajjex stared at the map, his brow furrowing as he identified each location. "The Thaumanova Reactor, the Northern Inquest Complex, and the 'Funhouse.' All of them are in Metrica Province, and extremely high-security labs."
"Mm, quite so," Preeke nodded gravely. "My money is on the Northern Complex. It's where they did vivisection experiments on the sylvari a decade and a half ago, when they first appeared in Tyria."
"Is there nothing in your world or ours you people won't butcher?" Rico growled.
"Enough, Rico!" Sybil scowled. "You can't ask a species to be responsible for the worst of their own, less so when they're trying to help us."
"Given what the Inquest did to the Sylvari, I don't blame him for the strong response," Preeke said. "Even the Arcane Council couldn't turn a blind eye to that. The Inquest keep it locked tighter now, so there's no way to know if that's where your kidnapped civilians are. But I don't see that they could be anywhere else."
"What kind of resistance ought we to expect?" Deisel rumbled, one hand on his drink while the other gripped the hilt of his blade.
"Golems, arcane turrets, and whatever abominations they might be working on," Preeke shrugged. "As far as personnel, you'd be facing elementalists, golemancers, riflemen – anything to keep them out of melee range. They lack the discipline and tactics of a military, but they have the numbers and equipment to make up for it."
"And without a Judge protecting us, we're vulnerable to death," Dusya added, a worried crease in her brow. "It's not ideal, but we don't have a choice."
"Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves with lamentations just yet," Tekki said, getting out from behind the console and digging into her satchel again. She pulled out four small fobs, each pulsing with a crystal, and handed them out. "Because I typically like to give the bad news before the good news. These are waypoint fobs, connected to Tyria's waypoint system. This is one of the ways we cross vast distances in a short period of time. It's also one of the ways we handle grievous, even fatal injuries, restoring ourselves back into an uninjured state."
"Fascinating," Sybil whispered, eyes gleaming with awe. "How does it work?"
"We'll spare you the boring details, but Tyria's waypoints are linked through magic," Preeke said, tapping the console again. The map of the local area shrunk, replaced with a full map of the Tyrian continent. Hundreds of tiny, blinking white lights appeared, with many clustered in advanced settlements. "Just speak your destination into the fob. If you get seriously injured, the waypoint will detect your vital signs and pull you through, rejuvenating you in the process."
"That's quite a useful feature," Dusya remarked, looking a little more hopeful. "Though I suspect there are limits, as with any magic."
"Indeed," Preeke nodded. "You have to register your fob by visiting a waypoint first. Too much active or mixed magic causes the fob to lock up until its dissipated. And some injuries are too much to come back from. Still, as long as you can avoid vaporization, dragon corruption, or being reduced into a paste, you should all be fine."
"Are such devices commonplace?"
"Not yet, though their use is gradually becoming more common," Tekki answered. "Ulta Metamagics gets them free of charge because of our work with the gate system, so we have a surplus. The Inquest's krewe leaders are bound to have them, though."
"Very well. We've made do with less before, and this is good intel," Dusya said, before turning her attention to Kajjex. "Now... since you know better than anyone here how effective they are in combat, can you suggest any approaches?"
Kajjex blinked, having forgotten he'd been brought along to provide whatever aid he could render. "I... er... well, uh..."
Rico smirked. "Lacking the strategic mind, 'scholar?' Spit it out, already."
"In a second!" Kajjex shot back. "Alright... I've only been attacked by Inquest once before. But they don't differ all that much from Peacemakers in terms of tactics. They tend to rely on ranged magic and defenses, mid-range carbines, and pistol-and-shield formations. But like most asura, they'll avoid fighting if they can make a golem do it for them. So, focus on the constructs first, maybe use their bulk to disrupt any line of sight. Then start moving through cover and engaging quickly before they can recuperate." He gave it some more thought. "Also, you'll be on their turf, so you're likely to run into traps and static security systems. Mind the walls and be on the lookout for pressure plates." He shrugged, sighing. "That's... really all I've got, I'm afraid. They don't do melee combat, so that's where you get them."
"It's more than enough to go on," Sybil said. "I can get everyone's gear ready in a couple of hours. That just leaves the question of when should we start."
"As per our host's suggestion last night, I believe conducting an operation during the night hours would be our best option," Dusya said, turning her attention to Preeke.
"Tekki is right in saying that the existence of Ivalice may not be a secret among Tyrians for much longer; but that's no reason to bump up the timetable," Preeke advised. "The Inquest are likely aware that you know Ivalicians have gone missing, but as far as we know they have no idea you've crossed into our realm to look for and rescue them. If you can keep it that way, then they won't be ready for you when you show up."
"Then I propose the four of us scout out this facility tonight," the nu mou said. "If we can get some blueprints or floor plans of this complex before we start, we can work out a plan of attack and reach the site while it's still dark, using the night and environment as cover. If it seems like we'll need reinforcements, we'll retreat back here and try to get in touch with the rest of our clan."
"It'll be a long walk on foot," Preeke warned as he turned off the projector. "You might want your avian buddy for transport. I'll come along to guide you to the site to make sure your fobs are working, at the very least."
"Thank you, Preeke." She got to her feet with a sigh, looking placid and hopeful. "We've got a couple of hours before the sun sets. We'll head back to the rooms you graciously provided us and prepare ourselves." She smiled and bowed to him and Kajjex. "Thank you both for your help."
Rico looked between them, his brow furrowing. "Wait. What about him?" he asked, pointing at Kajjex.
"What about me?" he replied, arching an eyebrow.
"You're not gonna come with us? I figured you would since part of this is your fault in the first place, considering this Torkk character put you up to it!"
"I'm not responsible for the old man's actions," Kajjex replied, feeling a surge of irritation at both Torrk's name and Rico's accusation. "I said I would talk, not fight – I did enough of that this morning, in case you've forgotten."
"Let it go, Rico," Dusya said firmly. "He's done more than enough for us, and we've no right to ask him to risk his well-being for people he's not responsible for." She gazed at the asura, holding her hand out to him. "Thank you for your guidance, Kajjex. I'm sure we'll be able to put it to good use."
The irritation ebbed away in seconds, replaced with a strange sense of discomfort as he shook her hand. "Well, I... I hope you're able to save your missing Ivalicians," he offered quietly. "Good luck to you all."
"Let me get you back to your room, and I'll reach out to a former associate of mine who might have access to Inquest lab floor plans," Preeke said, beckoning the Ivalicians to follow. He shot a grin to Kajjex. "You relax, kid. You've been doing great lately and you deserve a break for it. Feel free to hang out here if you'd like."
"Thanks Preeke," Kajjex said, with a smile he didn't quite feel. He watched as Preeke led the way, followed by Tekki, Dusya and Sybil; Rico tailed them, glancing at Kajjex and shaking his head with a sigh before following. It took a few moments for him to realize that one of them had lingered behind. His heart skipped and he nearly fell out of his seat once he noticed Deisel approaching, setting his glass on the bar.
"Alright there, youngun'?" the bangaa asked, looking curious – or at least to Kajjex's eyes he seemed curious, as opposed to the usual grim and violent expressions he'd thus far expected from them. "Didn't mean to put the scare in ye."
"Ah, no, it's... it's alright," Kajjex sighed.
"Naw, it ain't alright," the bangaa said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I reckon Sybil's got a point 'bout makin' amends and all. Not fer convincin' ye to put yer neck on the line, but 'cuz ye deserve it. Said it before, but I'm sorry fer wringin' yer neck a bit too much." He held his claw out. "We good?"
Kajjex managed a nervous smile and shook it. "Yeah, I suppose we are."
"Glad t' hear it," Deisel sighed, taking a seat on the stool next to him. "Yer mate there, Preeke, he's been doin' more than I figured he would. Got me to thinkin' ye little folk ain't so bad once we get to knowin' one another."
"You certainly came around quicker than Rico did, assuming he ever will," Kajjex sighed, looking back to where the others had left.
"Don't worry none about 'im," Deisel muttered, shaking his head. "The lad's a strong one, but a mite too invested in tryin' to be the next Lini – popular moogle knight back home," he explained. "His heart's in the right place, even if his sense ain't. I expect he'll come 'round sooner or later, now that he knows ye ain't at fault fer Siro dyin' or Kobb goin' missin'."
"Siro must have been quite the figure to have gotten such a strong response," Kajjex guessed, glancing at the bangaa's new blade. "I'm guessing the weapon I shattered this morning was Siro's, too? You mentioned it belonged to your best mate."
Deisel chuckled sheepishly. "Ah, hell... Preeke weren't lyin' when he said ye were a sharp one. Aye, Siro was a rare one. I don't think there was a single member in our clan he wasn't a friend to. He was a quiet one mostly, but could get fiery inna trice. No tolerance fer cruelty, but never one to look fer trouble." He half-smiled. "Think Dusya sees a bit o' him in ye. But aye, that blade what broke was his. An' I'll hear no apologies fer it, that one's on me fer tryin' to stick ye with it. Shoulda thought twice about it, but... I sure weren't expectin' ye to swing as hard as ye did." He paused, looking thoughtful. "Brings to mind a question, though."
"If you're going to ask why I'm not fighting, I don't have any answers for you I haven't already given," Kajex said firmly, folding his arms.
"Aye? Not sayin' ye got a duty to get involved, mind. But ye got a strong sword-arm an' a hard kick, an' that's comin' from personal experience," he laughed, rubbing the side of his snout. "Figured helpin' folks was yer line o' work, apart from testin' steel. How else would ye be puttin' it through its paces?"
"I'm comfortable enough testing weapons and helping the odd folk or two on the road. But I'm not a hero," Kajjex insisted. "I'm not looking to become a hero. I don't have the training, motivation, or the charisma to be one. It's not my place."
Deisel gave him a strange look, and to Kajjex it seemed like he was reminiscing. "Aye... Siro used to say the same thing, too, before I convinced him to join Clan Kanopy with me," he said, a smile forming along his snout. He got to his feet and thumped the asura on the back. "'Well, my opinion might not mean nothin' to a clever sort like yerself, but I reckon ye got what it takes to be one. An' yer right, bein' a hero ain't about seekin' to be a hero – it's somethin' ye do when ye gotta, not 'cuz ye wanna."
Strange though the reptilian fighter seemed, his sincerity was clear enough to make Kajjex smile. "I appreciate the vote of confidence, Deisel. And the words of wisdom."
"Ha! 'Wisdom' he says!" Deisel chortled, thumping his back again. "That's the first time I've been accused of having any of that! Yer alright, youngun." He gave the asura a grin and started heading for the stairs. "Right, well I'd best return to the rest of the clan. Ye take care of yerself, Kajjex – an' keep that sword-arm of yers strong."
"I will," Kajjex said, chuckling. "Good luck, tonight. Keep your friends safe."
Deisel gave him one last wave before heading up, leaving Kajjex to his thoughts. He glanced back at his drink, still sitting untouched at the bar, and with a shrug he drank it in one go. The burn felt nice, though it did little to soothe the lingering discomfort on his nerves. The last twenty-four hours felt like a full three days, a roller-coaster of twists and turns, highs and lows. In a way, it felt like the days leading up to him meeting Preeke, fluctuations of fortune and catastrophe that wore away at his ego and self-confidence. The only differences here was that his self-confidence felt intact and worth defending, and that he had more control over what to do.
"... So what the hell is wrong with you, Kajjex?" he muttered to himself, jumping into a couch with a sigh. It was easier, weeks ago – he could have resigned himself to bed and hoped for a better day. But now he had options, work that could keep him occupied. Yet he felt no desire to keep practicing on stage, do weapons training, or begin working on VAL-A with Mykksa's help. He wasn't sure he'd be acceptable company with a cloud hanging over his head. Forcing himself to do something wouldn't help, either.
Perhaps Preeke was right – a little break could do wonders.
His vision was one of abstracts, of color and formless shapes. He felt weightless and isolated, unable to see where the voices that echoed around him issued from. Shapes began to manifest...
Don't give up before you've even had a chance to struggle...
That is why you are a failure...
I don't even know what I really want anymore...
A horrendous, inhuman screech rang out in his head, nearly drowning out the klaxon of a quarantine alert; cold, dead hands reaching out to grab him...
Give up... you can't win...
... he believes you're worth it.
I don't exactly measure up to the standard of most geniuses...
A sudden spike of pain struck the side of his head and he felt himself flying through the air, hitting the ground and tumbling. Through blurry eyes he saw an enormous reptilian figure approach him with a spear...
Failure...
Please, I need your help! These thugs are trying to bleed me dry!
Don't think I won't skewer you for getting in our way, you little rat!
A din of screaming and shouting tore through his mind, flickers of rageful faces and blood... many eyes... countless teeth. It came with a surge of fear and panic.
... as long as your heart is in the right place, then we will always be glad to have you stand by us in our time of need...
Useless...
If he lacks the discipline... he may end up being a liability...
Let us go, you jerks!
... Don't fear failure... it's only in contrast to our failures that we can truly recognize the value of our successes...
He awoke with a start.
Words spoken weeks in the past still echoed in his head and resonated in his chest, as he jerked back into the waking world and sat up on the couch. Though he seldom dreamt of abstracts, he couldn't recall many concrete shapes or details. Just memories of words, and the emotions that accompanied them. His heart was still racing from the sensations he'd dreamt of, recalling pain and feelings of events from days or weeks prior. A strange tingling in his arms drew his attention. When he glanced down, it was to the sight of his hands trembling. A shiver ran through his spine, the echo of ringing steel and cries of pain reverberating in his skull a few seconds longer. It took a deep breath and clenching both his hands into fists for him to push back the memories of battle.
It took him a few moments to recall he was still in Preeke's speakeasy, still alone in an eerie silence. He scanned the room for some hint of the time, spotting a chronometer just above the stairs – half past six. Just a little after sundown. He wondered for a moment if Preeke and the Ivalicians had already left, his thoughts interrupted by the sound of steps coming down the stairs. A smile formed as Mykksa entered, wearing her leotard and a lab coat, carrying a pair of small boxes. The aroma of meat and sauce filled the air as she approached.
"Hey, I've been looking for you," she said, smiling. "Preeke said you might be down here."
"Sorry about that," Kajjex sighed, rubbing a hand through his hair. "I think the stress has been getting to me. Ended up falling asleep."
"Rest is important," she remarked, handing him a box. "But so is food. I whipped up a little something upstairs and had extra, so I figured you might want some."
"Smells good," he replied, removing the lid to reveal spicy noodles and steak. "Thanks, Mykksa."
"Don't mention it," she said around a mouthful of food. "It's the least I could do after you let me stay at your place for a few more hours. Thanks, by the way. I scribbled a couple of notes for your VAL-A project before I left."
"I'll take a look at them when I get back," he said before taking a bite. A hunger he had been ignoring for hours suddenly spiked and settled as he chewed. The pair ate in silence for a little while, bar a few slurps of noodles, before the question nagging at Kajjex finally became too much. "So... did Preeke and the others head out already?" he said, trying to sound casual.
"Yeah, they left for the Inquest Northern Complex about half an hour ago, and Tekki headed back to her krewe," she replied. "I thought you were going to go with, but he told me you declined. I suppose you have your reasons. How are you holding up?"
"I'm good, just fine. I figured I'd just get in the way," he said, shrugging. "And the Ivalicians seem to do this kind of work on the regular, so I'm sure they can handle it."
"They don't know the Inquest like we do," she pointed out.
"If they're familiar with that tentacle monster that wandered into our realm – what did they call it... a malboro? – then I doubt the Inquest has anything to throw their way that they can't handle." He stared up the stairway, chewing on his last bite of noodles. "Besides, Preeke said they were probably just going to scout the northern complex first before doing anything brash. If they can't handle it, they'll just retreat back here and get a few more of their clan mates. I'm sure they'll be back before long."
"Mm-hm... so... why do you look like a progeny whose pet lizard ate their homework?" she asked, smiling.
He faltered for a moment. "I don't... what--"
"Kajjex, if you have one weakness, it's that you're awful at hiding your emotions," she said gently, putting a hand on his shoulder. "You look like you just woke from a nightmare, you keep glancing up the stairway while you're eating – and look at your leg."
He glanced down at his right knee, unaware that it had been twitching impatiently. His ears drooped and his shoulders slumped as he sighed. "Damn... I'm really that easy to read, aren't I?"
"It's part of the reason I slept with you," she admitted with a blush. "You looked like you needed some comfort, and I was already interested anyway. But even if it was originally built with it in mind, I don't think a quick shag in Preeke's speakeasy is what you really need right now, not as much as a hot meal and an ear to listen. So what's really bugging you, hon?"
Kajjex shook his head. "I dunno... I feel like it's best for me to step back and let other people take care of things, especially when handling a situation that's neither my place nor responsibility."
She nodded. "But...?"
"But... Preeke is helping them out anyway," he said quietly, setting his finished meal aside and bringing his knees up to his chest. "I can't help but respect him for going out of his way to render aid even when he has no obligation to do it. Unless he just really hates the Inquest that much, he doesn't stand to gain anything by going out of his way. And it's making me wonder if I should have followed his example."
"Seems to me like you already do," she pointed out. "I know part of your weapon-testing involves you culling the roads of predators and thugs."
"Well, yeah, but that's something I'm paid for," he reasoned. "It also helps people get to and from Desider Atum safely."
"So what keeps you from testing those same weapons on golems, or constructed simulations?" she pressed. "The fact that you still take Master Bronk's suggestions to help others and put yourself out there says to me that you believe as he does."
Kajjex shrugged. "I guess...? But I'm still being paid for it. Preeke isn't."
"Were you paid to intervene when a Risen broke out of a test tube in the lower levels? Or when a moogle wandered into our world, chased by a trio of criminals?" she asked. He opened his mouth to respond, but had nothing to counter with. "Knowing Preeke, he probably said this wasn't your burden to bear. But what do you think? Do you believe you have any obligations to provide them help?"
Kajjex didn't answer. Logically, he was ready to say "no." Yet he couldn't bring himself to say the word now.
"You're right guessing Preeke hates the Inquest," she continued. "Just as much as Master Bronk, even. But there was a time when even Preeke wasn't keen on helping folks he didn't know, for reasons similar to yours."
"I have to imagine he was a different person at one point," he said, frowning. "But actually imagining it is... I just can't see him like that, not like how I've known him."
"He's done so well, you'd never know it looking at him now," she agreed. "It wasn't his obligation to help others then, and it still isn't now – yet he does it anyway. Like I said this morning, I can't tell you what changed, that's for him to reveal to you. All I can say is... some of our past choices can be hard to live with. And some of the choices we've yet to make can bring us peace, if we make the right ones. Seems to me like you might be worried you'll have regrets no matter what you choose. So break it down into another decision – which regrets do you think you'll be able to live with?"
He stared at the floor, hands clenching at the question. It seemed so obvious now what was bothering him, subconsciously trying to avoid dealing with it. Whether it was lack of confidence or a desire for a stable life without stress, it didn't seem nearly as important as it was to be at peace with himself. He had no duty to others before in the past. Not when it was a Risen seconds away from murdering another asura; not when it was a trio of otherworldly thugs hunting a moogle; and not when it was hylek in the swamp, protecting their spawning pools from krait marauders. But looking back on all he had experienced, he knew he'd never be at peace if he hadn't done something.
He didn't need to answer. He looked back at Mykksa, who was smiling warmly. Apparently, he really was that easy to read. "You're a decent person, Kajjex. You've got a good heart, and you have something to offer to others. It's not your duty, but it'll always be your choice. I think you'll know what the right choice will be." She reached out, booping his nose. "I'd bet you'd even help a skritt pup find its shiny if it asked you nicely enough."
Kajjex smiled, the tension leaving him as he did. "I... suppose I would," he admitted with a sigh. "I mean I almost did, once. Nearly chased some Inquest to the Funhouse one evening, when Preeke and I caught them smuggling skr--"
It was like he'd been smashed over the head with a mace, his head throbbing with the pain of sudden clarity; like a reconnected series of synapses flickering to life. He jerked up, his breath catching in a sharp gasp and his eyes going wide as he recalled a memory of a pair of skiffs – and pleading voices.
Let us go, you jerks!
Shut those rats up and get them inside!
"... Oh... no," he said quietly. Panic crept in, squeezing his lungs and causing his heart to race. "Oh no... oh fuck!"
"Kajjex?" Mykksa grabbed his arm, looking startled and worried. "Hon, what's going on? Is something wrong?"
He didn't answer, wrenching his arm out of her grasp and jumping off the couch, bolting up the steps. Behind him Mykksa was shouting, but there was no time for him to listen or explain. He nearly tripped on the last step, stumbling and recovering before racing out of the kitchen, leaping over the club's bar. Raxio spotted him and asked him something, but he ignored the charr and made for the back exit, shouldering into the door hard enough for the hinges to rattle. The alleyway echoed with the sound of his shoes skidding to a halt before he sprinted for his apartment. He had to get his sword, his waypoint fob, his armored coat – he had to get to the Ivalicians before it was too late.
Curses in every language he knew issued from his lips as he prepared himself quickly, buckling his coat and slinging his sword over his back. Yet no matter how fast he moved, it felt like the next second was coming too soon. He had just grabbed his satchel and secured it when Mykksa appeared at the door to his apartment, panting. "What the hell is going on, Kajjex?!" she cried out. "One second you're all relaxed and talking, the next you're getting geared up! I wasn't trying to guilt you into--"
"They're not at the Northern Complex!" he cut her off. "Alchemy curse me, I'm such a fucking idiot! I know where the kidnapped Ivalicians were taken, I should have seen this earlier! I have to get to the others before they get too far north!"
He headed towards the door, but Mykksa blocked his exit, her brow furrowed. "You're sure about this, Kajjex?" she said.
"I'll regret this for the rest of my life if I don't do something," he answered firmly.
She pulled him into a tight hug. "Then don't waste another second – and take care of yourself out there. I want you and Preeke to return to me safe and sound."
"I'll do my best," he said, hugging her back. He released her and left his apartment, stepping out into the alleyway and giving her one last look. He nodded to her, hoping his smile at least looked reassuring and more confident than he felt, then spoke into his fob.
"One for Desider Atum!"
