This idea popped into my head while looking at this piece by P-Sebae http://www.furaffinity.net/view/18122077/

Werewolves in this story are like those in "The Werewolf" that I wrote almost one year ago. It's set in a post-apocalyptic earth with a lot of unknowns. First time having a woman as the main character too.

Finished this a few days ago, but I wasn't too sure whether or not to submit this one. I feel that this was finished way too quickly and I didn't write enough for this idea. It's only 4,300 words, but I'll see what y'all think about it. So I may end up deleting this after a few days.

Tiny grey rocks tumbled down the dusty red dirt towards a forested ravine. The sound of footwear quietly crunched over gravel along a path bordered by a flat cliff face on one side, and a steep forty foot drop off into the pine forest on the other. A woman stayed close to the the clay wall as she walked down. The pathway quickly evened out and widened but started sloping down. The cliffs and cave were now behind her. Trees border her left, right, and down the slope straight ahead. Vale, the woman cautiously approached the left. Her body wore no clothing and the sun kissed her naturally aglow bare skin. Wavy brown hair descended to her shoulder blades, and a thick bush of auburn hair covered her groin like fur. There was no sign of a tan line anywhere from her neck to her ankles. Her worn shoes only matched because of the layers of caked mud on them. Her thighs, arms, abs, and other muscles were toned from living a demanding life. Firm, well rounded breasts were unabashedly in view of the world around her. A healthy body in its early thirties was an uncommon sight to behold.

Her world was one of rubble, old roads, crumbling deserted buildings, forests, and canyons. No one knew the numeric year and the word "electricity" had become largely forgotten. Survival was a daily chore that every living creature strived for. Vale carried a powerful rifle with a scope. It's dual purpose of hunting and protection was the most valuable tool at her disposal. Matching bullets were scarce so every shot had to hit its mark. She stepped over a wilting weed and stopped just before the nearest tree line to her left. The little bit of shade was a savior during this time of year.

"It's going to be a hot day." She covered her eyes from the sun and looked across the area. Mud coated the skin around her determined hazel eyes to reflect the hazy glare. The clearing continued down the subtle slope where there were more trees. There was more sunshine there, unlike the dense foliage beside her. A soft crunching sound caught her attention. Weapon ready, Vale whipped to her left and looked around the pine and oak trees for any potential threat. The shadow of a big figure caught her attention. 'What's out there?' Her finger rested on the trigger. A tense moment passed before a wolf's head poked through the underbrush.

"Oh." She released a tense breath with relief. "You're finally back, Nawa." She smiled as he emerged from the foliage. Nawa was a silver-grey werewolf with a splash of white on his throat and chest. Like Vale, the wolf had arms and hands but they were much stronger and bore claws. His legs were human above the knee and canine below the knee, making him digitigrade. He could walk bipedal or quadrupedal whenever he liked. Unlike her, Nawa could not speak but he could understand her and communicate. Only when the canine was within arms reach did his expression slacken and loosen up. His tongue lolled out and his muzzle curled upwards in a little grin.

"It's good to see you too." A grey tail wagged as she embraced him. Sitting upright on his haunches, the wolf was just shy of reaching her height. Standing upright, he was more than two feet taller than her. Normally anything bigger than yourself was bad, or at best neutral. She had found him injured in a collapsed building years ago. His thin form pinned beneath several rotted wooden beams and a mountain of rubble from an unknown incident. Vale had almost run away terrified, but his whines for help convinced her otherwise. Now he was a healthy werewolf, and after many trials of surviving together they were inseparable.

"Rrowurrr." Nawa quietly vocalized and smelled the woman over.

"Get your nose outta there." She giggled and moved his head away from her rear. His nose immediately targeted the fresh cut on her collarbone. "Come on, let's go back to the den for a while. You can lick me there." She walked with him up the gentle slope. "Den" was the word synonymous with shelter, and their temporary shelter for the summer was a cave overlooking the pine forest below. Every season they left in search of a new area to explore, forage, live, and hunt in. Staying in one spot for an entire year made it hard to hunt for migratory prey and forage for seasonal plants. There was also an instinctual drive to discover their surroundings and new areas in the world.

Uphill they reached a small opening in the rocky cliff face, and inside was a small cave. The bottom was smooth enough to sleep on with a little bedding of dried grasses. The dark interior was a cozy little place safe from the weather. It could easily be defended from predators so they could sleep in relative peace. Against the wall was a backpack stained with enough mud, dirt, and sweat to hide its original identity. The worn item held their few possessions; namely bullets, two knives, gauze, durable string, and other essentials. However, the backpack was starting to fall apart by the seams. It wasn't very easy finding something that could be carried without difficulty.

"Ah. Nice and cool." Vale yanked off her shoes and sat down. Nawa crouched down in front of her and started licking the cut below her neck. His hand steadied her while he worked. The woman's body was virtually scar free thanks to the healing properties of his saliva. He would lick any wound until it disappeared. Vale stretched her legs out while she could and enjoyed her little "bath."

"I searched around the cliffs behind here, but I didn't find anything." She told him how her morning went. "Where did you go?" She asked. He pointed towards the pines and lower forest. "Did you find anything?" He shrugged but shook his head once and finished addressing her wound. That meant he saw something, but it wasn't edible.

"Can you take me wherever you went?" The werewolf nodded. "Let's see what we can find." She hastily put her shoes back on. They walked outside and followed the path straight down. Nawa took the lead and led her down a trail through the pine trees. The pine straw crunched beneath their steps as they navigated around trees. They emerged on the other side to a large clearing. There was a fair amount of rubble, mostly brick or cinderblocks. A dilapidated brick wall, and two old buildings were the only remaining structures standing.

"You did find a lot." Vale placed a hand on her hip and wondered where to start searching. Nawa patiently sat down and waited. He knew that they wouldn't find nay food here. "Let's look through this one." The woman approached the closest big building. The paint had chipped off along the ground and the door was knocked right off its hinges. Inside was a strange interior of desks, tables, and countertops with a littered tile floor. "It's big in here." Vale's voice echoed quietly as she stepped inside. The ceiling was high and every window had been shattered. A tree limb was even growing into the building. Nawa checked behind them before entering. He sneezed much to his human companion's amusement. Vale stepped over a fallen light panel only to hear glass crunched underneath her shoe.

"Don't step over here." She warned Nawa. The werewolf walked to the other side and carefully sniffed the ground. Getting splinters out of his paws was tough enough. Vale kicked a few sticks and dead leaves aside where she walked.

"A mug..." She tried picking it up. After some effort she yanked it up. A thick ring of rust and film was left behind on the surface. An unappealing smell and layer of dust made her place it back down. She approached a sink and turned the knobs, but nothing escaped the faucet. Vale sighed and traced a line across the dusty counter. A beaker caught her attention. She curiously held up the oddly shaped glass. Nawa partner unknowingly walked behind her view and the glass produced an alternate image of the canine stalking the concrete floor.

"Haha! You look like a blob through this!" Vale laughed. The wolf merely tilted his head at her before smelling a cabinet. His lack of interest with old buildings was related to his disdain of being stuck inside them. Vale opened a drawer and found a furled up newspaper inside. She picked it up and furrowed her brow at the front page. There was a large black and white picture on the front cover, but it was faded beyond recognition. "It says 2057 in the top right." She read the numbers off individually. "Hmm... Ap-uh. Afril? No. Apreel?" Vale tried reading the word 'April' beside it. She set the newspaper aside instead of reading the big worded headlines "Thermonuclear." The next drawer had a series of charts and funny schematics but no useful items. Vale scoured the rest of the unlocked drawers only to find more funny paper, empty boxes, and rusted bits of metal.

"Hmm. There isn't much here Nawa." She discarded a broken rusted knife. Her shoe kicked something that rolled to the wall with a metal ting. Vale stooped down and picked up the small item. Fingers curiously felt over the smooth interior. "Why do I know that it's a shotgun shell?" She stared at the rusted purple plastic casing. It was tossed aside. "Let's look around outside-" The sharp nearby breaking of glass alerted them. Nawa immediately crouched to all fours. Vale hid behind the doorway and peeked outside but didn't see anything. 'The sound must have come from around the wall outside.' She waved for Nawa to follow. Vale crouched low to the ground and cautiously crept forward. Her shoes softly crunched over the hard red dirt. The grey werewolf stealthily followed behind. She paused at the end of the wall and peeked around only to hold her breath.

'It's a bear!' Her eyes focused on the lumbering animal sniffing and scrounging around a small pile of rubble and old trash. The giant black furred beast pawed at the loose ground and smelled the dirt with its bulky head. The ursine was even bigger than Nawa, and that scared her. A sense of dread filled her soul as she raised her weapon. Letting something so big that was so close to their shelter live was dangerous. Plus, there would be a lot of meat on its bones. Nawa readied himself behind her. She held her breath and took aim. The crosshairs pointed for a quick kill. Her finger pulled the trigger. A loud shot fired and was met with an equally loud roar. The wounded bear retreated to the woods. Nawa jumped over Vale and pursued the giant bear into the woods. Vale stared at the spot where he disappeared. The sounds of their pursuit echoed ahead. Her body remained tense as the minute dragged by. Faint echoes of noises ensued from the battle below. Were they barks, snarls, howls, or cries for help? Her mind raced with the usual scenarios and what-ifs but she remained in place. Accidentally shooting Nawa or getting in his way was so etching that the woman wanted to avoid. She hoped everything was alright.

"Aroooo!" A familiar howl deep in the woods brought a great sigh of relief to her. 'It's safe.' She stood up and hurried to the woods. In a matter of steps her surroundings of rock, rubble, and ruin had completely transformed into shady forest greenery. The woman followed a trail of blood droplets and disturbed underbrush.

"Nawa!" She called out. A nearby howl to her left answered. Vale hurried over through the saplings and undergrowth and stumbled upon a tiny clearing in the forest. The human skidded to a halt seeing a large mass of black fur on the ground before her. A large bloodied head rested at her shoes. She aimed her weapon at the fallen black bear, but the sound of panting snapped her petrified stare. Nawa's tongue lolled out as he panted beside the motionless bear. His muzzle was stained red. Seeing the strong canine that could easily kill a deer that tired worried Vale.

"Are you hurt Nawa?" She breathlessly spoke. The werewolf shook his head and stood up. He slowly approached the woman until he was toe to toe and towering over her. "What are you-?" She watched him raise a large hand and place the wam padded center over her heart. The palm nearly covered her entire chest. She paused and noticed how fast her heart was beating. Nawa held the woman's hand and licked her forehead reassuringly. "Thanks." She gave him a hug. "I was worried about you." He understood and held the woman for a moment.

Foreboding clouds rolled in overhead and thunder rumbled in the distance promising rain very soon. Vale looked at the huge predator. "Can we drag it back in one piece?" She asked him. Nawa looked at the fallen bear for a moment before giving a nod. They had a great difficulty moving the black bear together to the cave entrance, but it was well worth the effort. Nawa ate as much meat as he wanted while Vale quartered and cut up the ursine. What they couldn't use was tossed into the nearby ravine. They didn't want any unwanted attention from scavengers or another predator.

Vale and Nawa were sitting around a crackling fire in the cave, safe from the pouring rain outside. Their adrenaline and fear from earlier had dissipated. The taste of greasy bear meat was fresh on their lips. As much meat as they could salvage was being cured to last a few days. Outside, a bowl was collecting rainwater to drink.

"I have never seen a bear that big before." Vale watched a big chunk of meat slowly cook. The werewolf sitting beside her agreed. He used to be frightened by fire, but Vale helped him conquer that fear long ago. "Any idea where he came from?" She asked. The werewolf shook his head. Neither had any clue, but the ursine was not like Nawa. The woman's thoughts returned to the fire.

"I'm glad you don't eat a lot of cooked meat, or we wouldn't be able to save a scrap." She teased and rubbed his full belly. His tail wagged. Nawa pinned her arm and nibbled on her hand. "You can't eat me! There's not enough room for me." Vale laughed. He nibbled her fingers and licked any traces of grease off. "Even if I am tasty." She wiped her hand in his fur when he let go. Vale laid down with a smile. It felt good to be full. Nawa laid down beside her, and propped himself up with an elbow as if to watch over the woman. A furry arm rested across her midsection. The leathery padded hand on the woman's side warmed her skin. There was no need to fear the darkness outside or a sudden rustle in the leaves when they were together.

"My handsome wolf." She snuggled up to his warm furry body and listened to the rain beating on the ground outside the cave. During winter Vale wished that she had a fur coat like his, but was glad that she did not during the other seasons. Finding clean clothes was difficult enough, but maintaining them for cleanliness was virtually impossible. Her fingers wandered through the softer fur along his front. "I remember wearing a shirt a long time ago." She whispered. The memory was very faint, back when she was only fifteen. A disheveled figure wearing nothing but an oversized dirty white t-shirt, crying from loneliness. It was one of the oldest living memories in her mind. "But I don't have any shirts. I have you." She grinned and snuggled up closer to Vale. The fur that caressed the woman's skin made her happy. It was a reminder that she was no longer alone. Nawa smiled and held the woman in his arms. His head craned down to her front and smelled her skin. Vale grinned feeling whiskers trace over her skin as he smelled over her breast.

"Ooh." She softly cooed. The black nose's cool dampness pricked her senses as it traced over the sensitive bud of flesh. His lips parted and a big smooth tongue washed over her breast. The supple mass moved from the gentle force. Vale giggled and let him wash over her skin a few more times. "Okay. Stop." She moved his head away. He licked his nose and grinned back at her, knowing that she did not mind it. "Sometimes I think you do that for fun." She scratched his chin. The amused look in his eyes confirmed her guess. A furry leg rubbed over her leg and a paw rested on top of her foot. She watched Nawa's hand trail down and brush over her womanhood. He parted the curly auburn hair for a moment before moving to rub her inner thigh. His padded thumb touched more sensitive skin. Vale sighed. His senses were very acute on when she was in the mood. Sometimes she wondered how he knew, but it didn't matter. They both craved each other's intimacy. The wolf shifted and crawled over her where he laid down between her legs. Vale spread them to make room for him and then pressed them to his furry body. His nose hovered over the woman's sex and breathed in her scent. Vale bit her lip and dug her toes into his flanks. The hot breath on her crotch was arousing. His eyes curiously watched her, wondering if she wanted him to advance or not.

"You're lucky I'm in the mood today." She rubbed his muzzle encouragingly and left her legs parted for him. The canine's large head dipped back down and chuffed through the auburn patch. Vale held back a laugh. His tongue finally slipped out and started licking her. The wide, smooth, and warm appendage washing over her labia was met with a heated sigh. "It's kind of cute when your black nose is buried in those curly hairs." She relaxed and pet his ear while he lapped at her sex.

Their first venture to mating years ago was uneasy and tricky to say the least. Two bodies that were very similar, but strikingly different proved to be the easiest compatibility. However, the two psychologies trying to figure out each other's wants and needs proved difficult at first. Trial and error during an entire season led to many frustrations but the first success resulted in woman and wolf bonding closely.

Vale breathed deeply and closed her eyes feeling a strong wave coming. The wolf lapped inside her folds eagerly. The warmth of his tongue spread throughout her body as she moaned. Her body curled up as the peak of pleasure spiked. The woman's senses briefly numbed in bliss before she relaxed. The sound of his lapping tongue slowed but still continued to keep her hot and desiring. "Aahh. Mmm... Thank you." She pet his muzzle appreciatively. The wolf flashed her a toothy smile and backed off to clean his chops. The woman's sex glistened like fresh dew from his gentle loving. Nawa rubbed her leg and rose to all fours. Vale looked up at the werewolf looming over her. She knew what he wanted. A prying eye between his legs confirmed her guess. The canine's red member was freeing itself from his large grey sheath. The sweet look in his soft brown eyes met her own mutually.

Vale rolled over and rose to all fours, albeit shakily. His nose sniffed her one final time. She readied herself as he mounted her. The downy fur and underbelly fur pressed against her rear and back in a cozy embrace. One clawed hand planted inside hers for extra support. The other wrapped around her chest and rubbed the smooth skin tenderly. His head lowered and nuzzled their cheeks together as he entered her. Despite his size and power he was a careful and meticulous lover. This rainy evening would prove no different.

Vale awoke the following morning surrounded by fur, in the arms of her mate.

'Mmm.' She stirred awake from a great night's sleep. A full belly and a good round or two of mating always led to a good night of rest. Hazel eyes peeked open and found a wall of white and grey fur in front of her. Nawa was cuddled beside her, soundly asleep. His slow and deep breaths gave life to the otherwise dead cave.

'Leg's fallen asleep.' The familiar sensation of pins and needles was uncomfortable. She started moving only to feel something else. A peek between their legs revealed the problem. His large furry genitals were resting on her leg. 'I wonder how this happened?' The woman grinned at her sarcastic thought. She carefully held them up and moved her leg to not wake him. Vale rubbed the masculine organs before gently setting them down. Whenever they mated monthly, her menstrual cycle would usually delay for a while. She actually "felt" different once, but that only lasted a few weeks before returning to normal. The woman felt over her tummy partially buried in the wolf's soft fur curiously. One thought led to another. The image of a swollen belly with enlarged breasts crossed her mind. "Will it happen one day?" She wondered aloud in a faint whisper. Maybe at their next shelter. An ear flickered at the quiet disturbance. Nawa raised his head and yawned.

"You can go back to sleep." Vale wrapped an arm around the wolf's neck and kissed his muzzle. A faint grin curled the edge of his lips as he did so. The best part of having available food was that they didn't have to work all day searching for it. 'We can explore the rest of that area today and search the ravine. If there's a wide or deep creek then we can take a bath.' Finding the time and place to bath wasn't easy. A lake or wetland could be infested with snakes or leeches. Encountering other predators was more likely too. If there was a decent shower in the morning like last night, then they could simply stand outside. Her mind wandered about what else they could do, but she wouldn't have much time to do so. A group of howls interrupted their peaceful morning. Nawa and Vale jumped to their senses as the canine cries continued. She retrieved her weapon and hurried outside with Nawa. They ran around the side of the cave mouth. The werewolf led her up a steep climb above the cave where they could be safe. The wet dirt on her feet bothered her. She had forgotten her shoes during the abrupt awakening, but there were more important things to worry about. Young saplings and underbrush helped hide their position too. They sat down and searched for danger. The howls had died down and the morning otherwise returned to a deceptively peaceful quiet. Vale steadied her breathing despite the roaring thunder of her adrenaline fueled heart beat. Her eyes focused and searched the lower area towards the trees. Nothing caught her attention at first.

"Are you sure they're coming this way?" She whispered. Nawa sniffed the air once and stood firmly. Vale returned her gaze to the tree line and waited. About two hundred or so yards down the little slope a figure emerged from the pines. It was a pack of werewolves walking on their hind legs, just like Nawa. 'One. Two. Three... Four.' She counted four canines in total. An older white and grey male and female, and a younger solid grey mother with a male pup holding her hand. The pup stumbled behind his mother as he quickly adjusted to walking on two legs. The tall figures stealthily walked around the edge of the trees and up the slope towards them. Vale nibbled her lip with dissatisfaction. Each target was fast moving, at least for an accurate shot for such a distance. Moreover, there were four targets instead of one. She peered into her scope wondering what to do. A hand lowered her weapon.

"Nawa-" She looked at her mate, but his stoic gaze at the passing canines didn't waver. It was one of those moment where she desperately wished that he could talk and say exactly what he was thinking. Were they peaceful? Could they understand her like Nawa could? Would they communicate? Were they not ready? But why wouldn't they be ready? The questions begged to be answered like so many others she had asked herself over the years. There was so much more that she wanted to know. Vale's gaze softened.

"I trust that you know them more than me." She whispered and placed an arm around him. The werewolves below found an unseen path through the woods and disappeared into the ravine. They were gone for now. An entire season could pass before they heard another chorus of howls from any pack of werewolves.

'Why is the world the way it is?' She asked herself and looked at the morning sky. It was a question that she had asked herself and Nawa many times before. The rubble, her past, the items, and the creatures that roamed the earth... Maybe it was impossible to answer. The werewolf placed a hand around her hip and licked the side of her head. The warm gliding of his smooth tongue always reassured the human.

"Thanks Nawa." She glanced at him and noticed that he was looking up at the sky as well. His brown canine eyes were full of wonder like her own, trying to understand the mysteries of the world that they inhabited together. The young woman grinned and looked up at the sky with her mate. Maybe they would never know, and maybe no one would know.
