The deep hum returned once again. It felt as though the earth was shaking violently under our feet. Me and Vincent made it back to the cabin to find that the door leading back to the office was firmly shut with some of the guys struggling to open it. “Hey uhh boss? Someone locked us out and we're freezing our butts off here” One of them called out as he caught sight of us walking back.
“calm down, the nursery is back up so we should be fine.” I reassured him.
“I saw a beach not far from here, maybe we can find something useful if we start moving.” Vincent added in while rubbing his hands together. I agreed and told everyone to get ready to move out towards the beach. Conversations broke out between us as we made the trip down to our destination, this was when I took the time to get to know everyone else better.
“Grizzly tell me, what was it like. Dying and coming back again?” I asked him as we heard waves crashing against the coast. He didn't say anything for awhile, conjuring up the words to describe how he felt. “Do you know that old first person shooter game that was popular in all three citadels? Players working together to complete various task across the battlefield to win the match. I used to play up there for hours on end before the real war broke out. You feel nothing when you are shot at in the virtual world. You drop dead and would always hear the countdown until you respawn again, ready to repeat the cycle. However, getting shot for real is very different.”
Grizzly explained as we reached the place Vincent described. Camouflaged tents covered the area with a smoldering campfire in the center. Whoever stayed here left in hurry as we could see half eaten plates food laying atop of benches and chairs.
“The feeling of hot lead piercing your body, destroying your insides in the process was excruciating and yet, I kept on fighting. Everything went dark soon after, all of my senses faded with my hearing being the last to go. Everything after was a blur until your friend woke me up. I remember the first thing he said was that you was waiting for me at the other side. I at first thought that you perished just like me but when I saw you, I knew deep down that you were real.”
Everyone quickly split up, looting anything useful within the abandoned tents which left me alone with grizzly and Vincent. “ My desire is to be by your side till the bitter end Dex. I hope that your current position permits me to do such a thing.”
That omaga passion never seem to amaze me. There's no doubt that grizzly would take a bullet for me all over again if given the chance, hearing his resolve made me want to tear up but I instead balled my hand into a fist and held it up in front of him. “We're all family grizzly. Through thick and thin, we will always have each other's backs.”
“Da comrade!” He boomed, copying my actions. His fist connected with mine in what only can be described as the most manliest thing to ever happen between us. The vibrations weren't as intense now after a few hours had past but I knew that the nursery was active, giving birth to the human race once more. From what I read, the nursery comes stocked with the necessary resources and tools used to help build a large city, including military vehicles and weapons to help defend it.
All of this makes one wonder, if the nurseries purpose is created living breathing people from scratch then what exactly are the materials used to perform such a thing?
I sat there staring at the dome for who knows how long, pondering at the question for awhile until the smell of something delicious drew my attention away. Vincent was walking up behind me, carrying plate of food and water bottle. “The boys were able to get a campfire going and found something to cook, hope you're hungry!” He said, handing me the plate and sitting down next to me. Mashed potatoes and a few sausage patties, it wasn't much but It was still food and I was starving.
“I'm not trying to be a pessimist or anything but from the way things are going, the beastmen will be able to regroup for a full counter attack before we have a chance to do anything. It'll be over before it even began.” I bluntly said, popping a patty straight into my mouth.
“Have some faith Dex. I'm sure that the queen will be prepared if something like that happens.” Vincent responded. He still has that same cheerful personality from before which I missed a lot. A yawn soon escaped me and my eyes grew heavy, sleep was drawing near.
Vincent saw this and offered to keep watch while I rest but I declined, telling him that I needed more time to think. He shrugged his shoulders and proceeded towards one of the unoccupied tents, leaving me alone.
“Dex….Dex….sir Dex, wake up!” A deep voice yelled, shaking me out of my dreamless slumber. I opened my eyes but they were still adjusting. After a few seconds, my vision returned only to be face to face with the man who bore the silver eyes!
The first thing I noticed was the fact that he had six metal rods floated closely behind him, lazily pointing in random directions as if they were scanning for something.
“It's you!” I gasped, jumping up in fright. The rods quickly transformed into sharp spikes and immediately shot towards me, hovering at vital points of my body. “yes child, that was indeed me who woken you up but I must apologize for not properly introducing myself.” He chuckled, slightly waving his fingers down.
The floating objects jerk back to his side and continued there ongoing search. “I am one of her Majesty's trusted Knights and You shall call me mekhane, architect of the beautifully crafted nursery!” He proudly declared.
