The first chapter of my HSR rewrite. From Anonathan "Anon" "Nathan" Incog's point of view

Chapter One:

An Interrupted Morning

Anonathan Incog AKA Nathan or Anon.

Herank, supposedly, is a beautiful planet. I wouldn't know as I've been sick since my vessel landed three days ago and haven't left the, admittedly very nice, hotel. The sheets were comfy, though oddly warm for such a warm planet. Air Conditioning, like seemingly every ancient place, doesn't exist, which kinda sucks given how spaceports are generally on the equatorial zones or poles of a planet. Now, for the first time since I got to this planet I've left my hotel room and gone to enjoy the remaining two days I have on Herank. The hotel the company has set me up in is fantastic, the interior walls are in crisp white in the halls, the main lobby is a massive area with a lovely mural painted on the ceiling, but I think the restaurant is the best part I've seen so far. It has a cozy cafe vibe, lower ceilings and wooden interior walls, the chairs are the same dark colored wood as the rest of the restaurant, and the whole place smells of coffee and fruit. The waitress is gorgeous for a lizard woman, she has these wonderfully perky, yet large, breasts and these lovely yellow speckles across her body that contrast so wonderfully on her olive scales. We had flirted some after she took my order but now she's off to make my drink.

I'm checking my emails on my phone while waiting for the local hot drink I ordered. I notice a team of five of my company's security “guards" enter the cafe, and I assume they're also getting breakfast before while waiting the day away. I say guards but those guys are more heavily armed and armored than most of the actual military personnel I've seen on other planets. I also know the company has tanks, given how I've been on ships that were moving something like fifteen thousand of them to some mining world for whatever reason.

Suddenly I hear a deep, stern voice. “Mr. Incog, please come with us." Demands the leader of what seems to be an Omega Corporation security detail.

“What seems to be the issue mister?" I ask, wondering why the hell corporate would try to grab me from the hotel.

The brown scaled man cocks his head slightly. “Have you watched the news today Mr. Incog?"

What a strange question to ask I think. “No, I have not mister. I came down with some sorta sickness shortly before landing and have been sleeping most of these past three days." I answer.

The scaled man, whom I now recognize as my friend Lieutenant Vercner from the ship I'm navigator aboard nods. “Sorry Nathan, but we need to leave now" He firmly states while gesturing to his detail. “I'll tell you the details on the way, but first we need to get out-off-out of this hotel." he states, tripping on his English.

I get up from the chair at the in-hotel restaurant, not even having got the local hot beverage I just paid 12 bucks for. “Show me where I need to go." I say with a smile.

One of the other guards, a new hire crab-like creature whose name I don't know speaks up. “You really don't know what's going on do you!" he excitedly chitters

The towering equid of whom I know as Vic, speaks up next. “Of course not dumbass, he's been sick, so why would he have." He says before smacking him upside the head.

“It sounds urgent whatever is going on, so shouldn't we be going?" I ask, still very much confused about the whole situation.

“Would you happen to know where Mjadi Lini?" Asks Vic speaking before his superior can.

Mjadi… my brain ponders the name for a second and her figure. “Oh yes, she should be on floor 12, across from my room." I answer by beginning to think about my co-worker.

Vercner takes a breath of relief. “Thanks Nathan you've saved us a fair bit of time." He says before signaling for me to follow him.

Mjadi Lini, she's my coworker in the Nav room, where I do efficiency tracking with grav wells. She does anomaly monitoring during the sub-light portion of the voyage as after that the on board AI sends us to the nearest wormhole gate, and after that we don't have much to do. All in all we don't do much work after the first and last three days of any voyage. Aside from having a knack for some extremely complicated math, she has a lovely figure. Her hips are wide for a woman who's never had kids. I know that because she told me about how mad her mom was over her breaking up with her ex, for a second time. She has lovely dark brown stripes and pleasant off-white colored fur, it's hard for me to keep my eyes off her when her tail moves like a serpent. Her breasts are virtually non-existent but her perfectly round butt makes up for everything.

“Earth to Anon, I am aware Mjadi's fat feline ass is enough to make a man hungry, but I need you to overcome your “human nature" and come with us." Vic says, staring down at me with a half-smile strewn across his equine face. He then gives me a hand out of my chair and I wave at the cute waitress who shoots me a wink before hurriedly leaving the cafe, as I leave with the guards.

I follow the detail onto the grand elevator and the tone of the room shifts massively the moment the door closes. Vic's smile drops as Vercner nods towards him. Vic raises his rifle holding the elevator operator at gunpoint while Vercner. Vic whispers something in the ear of the old lizard male manning the elevator and we start going up. Vic then lowers his weapon and gives the elevator man some of the local money.

Vercner makes me stand to the side of the elevator like something is going to start shooting when the doors open. The detail consists of five men in total, Vercner, Vic, the crab fellow, and two masked, probably human, guards. The two humans are bitching about something in their native language, they both say something that sounds like “Goofy Gecko knee". The doors to the twelfth floor open and Vercner tells Vic to keep his gun trained on the operator.

“We're here for a reason boys, extract Mr. Incog and Ms. Lini and get to the roof." Vercner snaps. “Now, Mr. Incog, if you'd be so kind as to show us to the lady's room we'd be more than grateful." Vercner says, forcing a toothy smile from his raptor-like face.

“Sure thing Vercner, but could you tell me what the hell is happening?" I say beginning to walk down the hall towards Mjadi's room.

Vercner shrugs “You know how this planet is in the middle of a civil war? Well the faction we aren't all that liked by is about to seize this city, and if we're still in it by the end of the day we're gonna be minced meat." He says casually as if civil wars were just the norm, no different than bikinis at a beach.

I can feel the surprise on my face. “Oh… Fuck." Is all I can reply. It oddly makes sense but still this was not the reason I was expecting. Is that why the waitress hurried out of the hotel? It would also make sense why Vercner had Vic be so rough with the elevator guy.

The rest of the walk is silent barring the heavy footsteps of the armored guards. I pass a window to see the city and spaceport, but when we round the corner to look towards the North of the city the smoke, fire, and explosions give away what's really happening. I'm surprised I didn't notice on the way down, or when I was in my room. After one more turn we get to Mjadi's room.

I knock on Mjadi's door, afterwards I can feel my heart begin to race. Is she alright? I don't hear anything or is she just sleeping or something. After what feels like an eternity of slightly “Nathan? What are you doing here?" She asks, twirling her hair and biting her lip with her long, white, incisors.

My brain begins to trip over itself. All of a sudden that animalistic voice that's part of the conscious, the one that's oh so convincing and impossible to resist begins to take hold: play it cool, or at least try to. “Well I'm here for you obviously." I say with a smile and a wink. She's wearing a white bathrobe, one that makes the contrast of her offwhite fur and white stripes all the more noticeable, and with the way she's wearing it if she had any real breasts I'm certain I'd be having a lovely view of it.

Mjadi's smile takes a lustful turn and her eyes narrow. She slowly puts her clawed hands out and places them on my collar before suddenly pulling me just in front of her face. Close enough to feel her bated breath. “I was wondering when you were going to come by, you know what they say, what happens in Fvern stays in Fvern..." She whispers right into my ear… HOLY SHIT IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?!?! Is all I think as I can almost hear the movements of her tongue as she speaks.

When suddenly a familiar deep voice snaps me back to reality.“I hate to ruin the moment, but Nathan isn't here to blow your back out Mjadi, though I'm sure he's flattered. We need to leave so get dressed and get out here." Vercner impatiently snaps.

Mjadi glares at Vercner for a moment before taking a look out the window. She seems to then realize what's going on. “They're here already?!" Is all she says before closing the door again.

I turn to Vercner and apparently my face is showing my disappointment. “Sorry about the cockblock Nathan but I'm sure you'll have plenty of chances to plow that pussycat onboard." He shrugs.

Armed with the knowledge that Mjadi wants to fuck my brains out I resolve to make the next three months aboard “The Stargazer" far more than the usual tolerable and into a time to remember. Though, I wonder if I'll actually ever make a move on her even if I know she wants me. I suppose the only way to find out will be with time. We got this Anonathan cheers my inner voice as my doubts begin to mount on my own abilities and confidence.

One of the human guards says something to me in his native tongue that sounds something like “Bol Yeah Jebee too macoo" before patting me on the back.

“What he said." Cheerily says the other in his heavy accent, which I think is somewhere from Eastern Europe.

“Thanks?" I say nodding, still unsure on what I was just congratulated for.

“Did you just speak trade standard?" Demands the crab fellow who decides now is the time to butt in on the conversation.

“Da." answers the man who just spoke english.

“Then why do you speak that other language?" The crab demands.

“No reason to. Vercner understands, Vic understands, almost every other guard either learned or joined understanding our language, and no enemy does" answers the other guard.

“Wait Vercner you understand their language?!" The crab demands.

“Yes, I do speak Balkan-ski." He says. “Since so many of our ranks come from the Earth Region known as Eastern Europe, I figured it was useful to learn one of the so-called “Slavic" languages. Just ask Gregori, he used to teach the kind spoken on our ship to other humans from “the west"." Vercner details.

“Why did no one tell me about this?!" The crab pleads.

“Because you are crab and never asked." Says the English speaking human.

“Krrrich-nak-kerno" The creature spits.

We all turn to the window after that, with the crab demanding yet more info out of Vercner, and the two Slavs talking among themselves and occasionally to Vercner in “Balkan-ski". All the while I'm in my head I'm fantasizing like a teenager over his first crush about Mjadi. I wonder if Mjadi wants to go to earth one day. Does she have the weird sandpaper tongue thing like cats do back home? Wait, do cat people have like, normal pussies or like cat pussies?. I eventually catch myself as I see the hotel door open. Mjadi emerges from her room with her bag and is dressed in some sort of Felid fashion with wavy vertical lines that alternate between neon green, orange, and white. We all leave back to the elevator, where Vic is now playing cards with the elevator operator. Vercner doesn't seem all that happy about it.

Vic raises his brow and the old lizard turns around in his little operator table and presses a button with an inscription I can't read. The elevator begins to move up again, and Vercner pulls Vic aside. I can hear some muffled whispering, all I can tell is that Vercner is not happy. The two human guards pull down the mouth cover and begin to smoke. They offer me a cigarette which I decline. Mjadi moves next to me as the elevator goes up, and I swear I feel her tail brush against my knees. “You know Anon, I've heard you humans are Anjekans minus the pretentiousness." She says. “ With a wink.

“What the hell is an Anjekan?" I ask stupidly.

“Wait, you don't know?" She asks with a raised brow.

“I'm not all that familiar with the species out here." I say as its the most normal thing.

Mjadi stares at me for a moment, her mind clearly overclocking by the look in her eyes. She opens her mouth as if to speak, hesitates, and then seemingly comes to a sort or realization. “Aside from here on Herank, how many other urbanized worlds have you been on Anon?" She asks inquisitively. “I've worked on the Stargazer on and off for about three years now, and to my knowledge aside from “the One" you humans have been in and around for about five years now. If I'm not mistaken, you've worked on multiple ships right?" She asks.

Trying to remember the names of the first few vessels I was aboard I just kinda begin to dribble out the numbers of the ships. “I was on UX-1146 for a two month haul bringing Earth settlers to New Burgundy, then on OH-75 from New Burgundy to some mining world that more resembled a military base. Then the next ship I was on I don't think had an official designation yet and I went to some Orbital Shipyard deep in some uninhabited region. That wrapped up my first year, then the next I was helping out some cartographers map the region for a year, then got sent aboard the Stargazer from that shipyard back to New Burgundy, and from there to a whole list of backwaters and worlds that looked more like factories than planets." I ramble on and on.

The elevator door opens just as Mjadi had opened her mouth but the look on her face tells me all I need to. At least I think so. With her furrowed brow and titled head giving every pointer towards confusion

Vercner slams his tail against the ground with a loud CLAP commanding everyone's attention. “Alright everyone, just down this hallway is the roof access. Zhorta and Gte have one of the heavy lift helicopters waiting for us up there, ready for take off. There's also some of the company security force equipment aboard." Vercner pauses for a moment, takes a deep breath “PA NAY PUSHY CHEW YAY MAY VUK E PETAR!" Is what I think he yells glaring at the two Slavs. He then leaves signaling for us to follow. Mjadi takes her place by my side as we walk through the unadorned hallway of obvious storage closets. The closer I get to the door to the roof the louder the chopping of the helicopter blades are. After making a turn I can see the rickety polymer door is shaking like Mohammed Ali's hands. The noise of the helicopter is now almost deafening, like what I'd imagine King Kong jacking off would sound like.

Vercner and Vic force the door open. I hurry through the door, with Mjadi and the rest of the detail following shortly behind. Vercner's shouts at us to go towards the cargo bay doors, just barely being able to be heard over the roaring noise of the turning blades. Once in I move towards the left wall of the interior. Mjadi, her fur standing on end looking like a sort of fluffball, is clearly very upset and stands opposite to me, trying to force her fur back down, bitching all the while about lizards and helicopters.

Vercner and Vic enter the heli last, Vic slamming the close button on the cargo hold. His fur and mane are also standing on end, the two of them look at each other, nod, and then glare at Vercner, me, the crab, and the Slavs for a moment. The aircraft lurches some as it takes off, at least I think so. Looking around the helicopter, I can see no windows in the cargo hold, the cargo is in thick armored boxes, not unlike the ones used to ship explosive industrial materials, just far smaller than those.

Man, what a morning I think, reflecting on my life since I left Earth five years ago. I'm actually not even sure I've seen a single non-white one since since like half of the security is Slavic, and all the other humans on the cartography trips were like swedish or something. Isn't it odd? I mean, I used to make fun of dudes who liked cat girls, now I have a very real chance of being inside one myself. Think about it Anon, out of everyone on board the aircraft the two strangest ones are the two other humans, an argonian looking fucker, a horse person, a crab person, and an actual, honest to God, living, breathing cat girl, and this is normal to us now. My mind continues. I continually lose myself into thoughts of just how strange and different my life is now when compared to how I thought it would be when I left college.

Suddenly I am pulled from my thoughts as I feel the aircraft lurch massively, I suddenly start falling towards the right wall. I scramble to my feet and grab some sort of handle, just in time too as the aircraft turns in the opposite direction. I look around the cargo hold again, Vercner is yelling at someone over his comms, this time in a language that sounds utterly inhuman. Vic is rummaging around some sort of box. The Crab is gripping the bar nearest to him hard enough to dig into it, Mjadi is holding on to hers and is oddly intent on Vic, while the Slavs have swung their rifle slings over their shoulders and seem to be praying.

Vic seems to find what he's looking for and throws the face covering of his helmet on over his snout. The Slavs stumble towards him, barely able to keep their footing and take one each of the things in Vic's arms. They sling them over their back and it dawns on me. Those are parachutes. Vic moves to Mjadi next, then me, after me he goes to Vercner, and lastly the crab, before grabbing one of the handles himself.

“Vic what the hell is going on?" I ask, feeling the fear rising inside me.

“The rebels have started shoo-" Vic is cut off by an eardrum rupturing BOOM and subsequent screech of metal shearing.

And just like that the helicopter has windows, the entire right side of the aircraft is now just gone. Another explosion rocks the helicopter and I see parts of the rotors fly past us as we begin to…
