The Horse Next Door (Part 1?)

Tyler had lived in one home for his entire life so getting used to the dorms at college was a strange experience. Granted, college was only about two hours away so coming home during the weekends was the rule and not the exception, but he was overjoyed to get back to his bedroom full time when summer vacation finally arrived. There were things he really enjoyed about being at home: his video game console, his mom's cooking, and the fact that their neighbor had a swimming pool and enjoyed company.
They lived on a cul de sac and Tyler's mom's house was on the south side while their neighbor,Thomas Brown had the house on the north side; they each had a lot and a half since the developer hadn't wanted to have a home directly in the middle of where vehicles would be turning around. Mr Brown, or Tom, as he demanded Tyler to call him was an older stallion, a few years his mom's senior. He was a nice enough guy who'd always been friendly to them, but had withdrawn a little during Ty's Junior year in high school-- it was the year the Stallion's wife left him and their son.
Tom's son Abraham was two years older than Ty, and had left for college right before it happened. There was a lot of talk around the neighborhood that she'd been cheating on Tom but, as far as anyone knew, it was just rumor, and the folks living on Nightingale St thought too highly of the Stallion to actually come out and ask. Ty remembered the Horse being withdrawn and distant from everyone for the following months, being alone with neither wife nor son as company. Tom would be gone from his home every morning Ty woke up, and the Stallion's huge truck wouldn't pull into the drive way until well after the teen returned home.
It wasn't until Ty's senior year that Tom finally began to recover. The Stallion started inviting him and his mother over for bbqs, for swimming parties and, on occasion, to watch a new release on streaming on his enormous big screen-- he often liked to joke that he needed a TV sized for a horse-- considering Tom was over seven foot in height it was a tall order (another one of the Stallion's constant jokes). Ty enjoyed that time; having lived without a father since his dad left when he was six it was nice having an older male role model and Tom seemed happy enough to fill that role.
One thing that Ty noticed that summer as he pulled in back into his mom's house was that Tom's truck was his driveway; the young Human was pleased that his neighbor had finally found some work-life balance... until he heard the sound of a lawn mower coming from the Stallion's back yard. Leaving his things in his trunk, Ty made his way over toward the fence that split their properties. As expected, the young man saw the huge Horse pushing a lawnmower-- it was one of the older models that didn't have a motion assist... not that Tom would need it; the massive stallion probably could have moved it along with one hand.
Ty hung out for nearly two minutes before Tom caught sight of him; the lawnmower cut off immediately and the Stallion raised a hand, waving it in greeting as he trotted over. "Well howdy there, Ty! Ah reckoned ya'd be back any day... guess ah was right!"
Smiling, the Human leaned against the gate to Tom's backyard. "Yeah... just got back. Figured I'd say hi!"
Holding out a hand, Ty was surprised when Tom yanked him closer. "A handshake? Like hell, kiddo... get over here!"
The Stallion enveloped him with two huge, muscled, sweaty arms and gave him a firm hug. "Missed ya, boy... pool's been gettin' mighty lonely ya know... ain't seen any use this spring at ALL."
Tom was in early 50s, but the age barely showed; standing over 7', the Stallion was beefy to say the least-- his landscaping job keeping him in excellent condition. His fur was a reddish-brown chestnut with a white stripe down his muzzle with similar fur along his feet and hands, both of which had generous amounts of feathering. The Horse's mane was a slightly darker red with just a few hints of graying strands. Tom had his shirt off, a fine sheen of sweat on his sculpted physique; it was a hot day, and lawn care was obviously laborious. The Stallion had a white star on his chest which matched the fur on his face and some thicker fur resembling a treasure trail started at his belly button and disappeared down into his jeans-- Ty tried not to look, but he'd always thought that Mr. Brown was impressive.
Ty didn't realize he was supposed to respond to Tom's comment until the Stallion pressed him. "So what'cha think, Ty? Ya wanna go get yer stuff settled in th' house and come on over t' join me fer some burgers an' some time in th' pool? Consider it a welcome home party."
The young man held his hand overhead to shield his eyes from the hot sun; at least in the mountains where he went to college there was a nice cool breeze. Laughing, Ty took him up on the offer. "Unless my mom finally got some AC in the house I don't think you could KEEP me from the pool, Mr B."
The Stallion was all smiles. "Sounds good, Kiddo... Ah'll finish up with the yard then get the grill goin'... not sure how much ketchup Ah got left so why don'cha bring a bottle over from yer ma's fridge?"
Nodding to the affirmative, Ty gave a brief way goodbye, letting out an 'eep' when the Stallion gave him a light swat to his rum with an encouraging 'Git!'. The teen raced back to his car, in a mere two loads, had everything inside his house. He quickly changed into a t-shirt and swim trunks, grabbed a tower and, just as he was about to head out the sliding glass door, he went back to the kitchen and grabbed the ketchup. All in all he was gone less than ten minutes but, as usual, Tom was a miracle worker and had the rest of the lawn done-- the Stallion was already tending to the grill by the time Ty hopped the fence.
Ty also noticed that Tom had changed; the horse was wearing a huge gray tank top which came down to his hips but did little to hide the jet-black speedo which was only just barely securing the Stallion's 'goods'. The moment his neighbor noticed him, Ty got a huge smile. "Hey... there ya are! Ah was wonderin' if ah'd have'ta guess whether ya wanted a burger, a hot dog, or both."
Ty knew that whatever Tom put on the grill would turn out amazing. "I'm good for anything, Mr B... just can't wait to taste your meat."
The young man froze in place, his words echoing around his head again and again as time slowed to a crawl; did he just say THAT to his neighbor? The young man was thankful when the Stallion glossed over it, hopefully not quite catching the unintended double entendre. Ty immediate went to the ice chest to grab a soft drink, popping it open and chugging it in an effort to cool off and hide his embarrassment.
Chuckling warmly, the Horse tore open a package of hot dogs. "Ya got it, kiddo... Ah'll make em up nice n hot for ya... course ya like mah dogs... nothing quite like sticking a Texas wiener batween yer buns."
Ty didn't weather the Stallion's double entendre as well as his own, spewing a mouthful of cola all over the lawn. The Horse looked at him quizzically, one ear up and the other turned sideways; had Tom REALLY not caught on to how bad that sounded? Trying to recover from his bout of immature humor, the young man coughed. "It... uh... went down the wrong tube."
Tom smiled, setting down the tongs as he went to the large wooden picnic table gracing his covered patio and he grabbed a napkin, bringing it over to the young man. "There ya go, Kiddo... an' please, try ta NOT water th' lawn with pop... it just ain't good fer grass health... ya get me, Ty?"
Blushing, the Human nodded, accepting the napkin. "Sure. Thanks, Tom."
The Horse whistled softly as he cooked, his tail swaying this-way-and-that in time with the musicality, but, after a short time, the Stallion stopped and glanced over his shoulder. "Say, Ty... ya mind if ah ask ya a question 'bout yer ma?"
Although Ty had thought about it for a LONG time, he had a much clearer view of things since leaving for college. Although Tom had always been friendly, once he'd recovered from his divorce he became even more outgoing, gracious, and welcoming to them, having them over often, and helping Ty's mom with the yardwork without even charging her. Things clicked and the young man finally had his chance to talk about it. "You're interested in my mom, aren't you?"
Both of the Stallion's ears went straight up, an expression of surprise on his muzzle, but that shifted slowly into a sheepish smile, his furless inner ears reddening as he raised a huge hamfist and rubbed the back of his neck bashfully. "Well hell, kiddo..." he cleared his throat, "What'd ever give ya a crazy idea like that?"
Ty smiled at his massive neighbor's sheepishness; the thought of his mom dating again seemed almost insane but, if she did, he knew she could do a lot worse than Tom. "Hey... I don't want things to be awkward or anything, Tom... it's okay. I'm nineteen. I can handle my mom dating."
The Horse doubled-down on his sheepish expression. "Ya wouldn't mind, huh? Sure ya could handle havin' me 'round all the time?"
Smiling, realizing he guessed it, Tyler raised the soda can to press against his neck, dispelling some of the day's oppressive heat. "Honestly? I think it could be really great for all of us... I mean, Mom would love having someone to hang out with, and you two getting along so well. She could use someone who would treat her right... and I think you'd be good a good thing for us."
Ty froze, realizing he'd meant to say 'her', but, again, Tom didn't seem to be quite as hyper focused as the Human. "Well... can't tell ya how glad it makes me t'hear ya say that ya like havin' me 'round Kiddo... truth be told, ah think it'd be great having ya 'round more too! Ya know, ah gotta admit, ah've been feeling a little lonely lately."
The young man sat up straight. It wasn't often that Tom discussed personal stuff, and the moment the Stallion admitted feeling lonely it caught Ty's attention. "Really?"
The Stallion glanced back at him after moving the hot dogs around. "Sure do. Th' divorce was tough on me... saw someone professionally t'see if it'd help. Ah been spendin' a lot a time trying t' focus on mah work an' taking care a maself. Bein' around you an' yer ma made me feel... seen an' heard. Ah know ya don't quite get it at yer age, but as ya get older things change a lot. Makin' friends an' meetin' folk ain't as easy as it is when yer young."
Ty raises his eyebrows, lowering the can in his hand. "Really? I figure anyone who met you would love you, Tom. You're... awesome!"
The Stallion chuckled, ears reddening again. "Well ah appreciate that a mighty big bit, Kiddo... y'all don't treat me like ah'm just big stupid Horse who's lost his way. Y'all've broght some joy back inta mah life, an' fer that ah'm grateful. My ma always told me t'be grateful fer what'cha got... an' ah'm mighty grateful t'have you two as ma neighbors."
The young man was not particularly good with 'feelings', but Tom was like a member of the family, and the admission touched him. "We'll always be here for ya, Tom... mom and me both. It's not something you have to thank us for... my mom'd be lucky to have a guy like you."
Tom chuckled, turning back to focus on the bbq, giving Tyler a full view of his exposed muscles, each rippling beneath his fur as he tended to the hot dogs. The Human felt his throat constricting at the sight, but he knew better than to fantasize about his older neighbor... especially one who was interested in his mom. He was pulled from his own thoughts as Tom spoke, poking at the sizzling hot dogs "Ya can't know how much that means t'me, Ty... It ain't been easy navigating this new chapter in mah life, but having someone like you believe in me, that's..." the Horse paused, as if searching for the right words. "It's like discoverin' there's still sunshine after days a grey clouds."
His statement complete, the Stallion loaded the hot dogs up onto a plate he had ready for just that purpose and brought them to the table and set them down. "Ha! Ah see ya got th' ketchup too... good boy."
Ty grit his teeth, trying VERY hard not to respond to the praise; although his mom knew he was gay it was not something the young Human broadcast, and was DEFINITELY not the thing he needed to complicate his time with his next door neighbor since the young man had a thing for authoritative older men. Managing to laugh off the tension, Ty shrugged. "Hey... you're supplying everything else, least I could do was get the ketchup, right?"
Tom nodded, heading into his house, only to return a moment later with a collection of items, setting them all down on the table. "Fix em up however ya like, Kiddo... take as many as ya like-- ah got more meat than ya could manage to cram inta yerself so don't hold back."
Ty was thankful that he wasn't drinking his sofa but still almost ended up choking on his tongue at the statement. Finding no way to banish the awkwardness of his overactive mind, he resolved to get in a subtle play on words of his own since his neighbor obviously didn't realize how his dirty brain was working. "Oh, I'd be happy to take all the meat you give me, Mr B."
The Stallion whinnied out a laugh, patting Ty on the shoulder. "Sounds good... ah'll send leftovers fer ya an' yer ma."
Sharing the table, the two had a pleasant lunch; Tom asked about college and Ty was happy to report that classes were going well. He asked Tom about his own son, at which point Tom provided his happy-father speech about what his own son was up to. By the time hotdogs were consumed and softdrinks (or in Tom's case, a few beers) were downed, they lounged under the shade awhile longer to sit and digest. There was always something calm and relaxing about hanging out with Tom, and Ty honestly missed it. Out of the blue, he noted "I'm glad to be back, Tom. College was great, but it's not the same as being home."
Smiling, the Stallion stood up, stepped around the table, and knelt down to give the young man a warm hug. "Sorry yer ma's out workin'... but ah'm glad ah can be here t'welcome ya back, Kiddo."
Ty looked up into the rich brown eyes of his neighbor who smiled down at him, strong arms embracing him. The young man had been afforded a chance to explore relationships in college and he'd had a few flings, but he hated how superficial and self absorbed most of then turned out to be. He opened his mouth to say something that would definitely have been stupid, but he was saved by Mr Brown's cell phone alarm. Feeling his face flush, Ty glanced at it. "Guess it's been a half hour... pool time?"
The Stallion pulled back, releasing the young man. "No better way t'cool off."
Letting out a happy sigh, the Human stood up. "Considering how hot it is and no AC at my mom's place, you're a godsend, Mr B."
Tom slapped his own thigh with a loud 'ha'. "Happy t'help, kiddo. Yer welcome over whenever ya like fer as long as yer home. Hell... if yer mom's doin' another late shift ah already got the grill fired up... no reason ah can't do up some chicken or steaks fer dinner if ya want. Grillin's always a lot more fun with company."
Nodding eagerly, Ty stripped off his shirt, setting it to the side as he approached the pool. "Hell yeah-- your bbq sauce kicks ass!"
The Stallion laughed heartily at the enthusiasm. "THAT'S what ah like t'hear, kiddo... now get yer but in th' pool. Gimme just a minute and ah'll join ya."
Letting out a contented sigh, Ty took the steps one at a time; the pool water was just a little cold, which was perfect on so hot a day. He was just about to take the final step when two huge hands grabbed him by either shoulder. "Woah there, kiddo..."
The young man paused, feeling something slick and squishy coming from the fingers on both the Stallion's hands; a moment later he smelled the distinct aroma of sunscreen lotion. "Oh... right. Sunburns suck."
Tom chucled, his huge hands and calloused fingers working the sunscreen across the college student's shoulders and back. "Yep... gotta make sure yer covered up if ya ain't covered up, son."
Enjoying the feel of the huge hands on him, Ty wasn't even thinking when he responded. "Well... shorts are great, but I'd definitely be wearing a speedo if I could rock one like you can, Tom."
Realizing what just came out of his mouth, Tyler froze, his entire body turning beet red. Behind him, Tom chuckled softly and, before Ty could say anything else, came down to more steps, looming right behind him. The Human felt something very large and very thick pressing against the middle part of his back. "That so, kiddo? Ah'm glad ya were payin' attention... it'd be a shame t'think it went unnotied."
Ty finally realized what was going on for REAL: it wasn't his MOM Tom was interested in. Feeling a shiver run through him as the Horse's package pressed more firmly against his back, the Human spoke with an unsteady breath. "Y-yeah... I... I noticed."
Leaning over his shoulder, Tom's muzzle rested aginst Ty's ear as he spoke. "Still think ya can handle all the meat ah got fer ya?"
Ty honestly didn't know... but he was willing to find out.
