Prince Dino doubted that anyone would bother him in the basement of the inn, but the two guards that he'd hired with the remnants of his monthly funds should make sure that nobody caused trouble. The reindeer, just under five and a half feet tall compared to the taller rhinos, nodded at them as he passed between. They nodded back, resting their hands on the swords at their waist in a gesture of respect before crossing their arms over their chests again.

He doubted that he'd get the same respect in the palace tomorrow, so he enjoyed it while he could.

Fumbling a key from his trouser pocket, he unlocked the basement door. A dim lantern lit the room inside, casting a faint light over a large table and illuminating a trio of silhouettes. The fact that this looked so much like the romantic novels of conspirators meeting for a secret plan did not escape him. If anything, it made him smile.

"Greetings, everyone. The time is near for us to enact our plan. If you would turn the lantern up, please, Kantu?"

A scaly hand reached into the light and turned up the knob at the base. The lantern flame climbed, casting more light around the room.

Dino smiled at his friends, looking from one to another around the table. There was Braford, the black bull that had served as his bodyguard since his father's death, and had served good King Dorro before that. There was Kantu, the harpy eagle, a lower-ranking noble from a neighboring land that had been his friend since long before his unofficial exile. And then there was Asmund, a great and mighty polar bear that had been cast out from his land by a rival chieftain, and who had lived in Espos with him and the others while gathering strength for his return.

They were all friends, and they had proved it by coming when he called. Dino nodded to himself as he walked up to the table and rested his hands on it.

"Tomorrow will be the day where we all get what we want," the reindeer said, smiling as he looked between his friends. "Tomorrow, everything will be set to right, and my father's advisor will be exposed for the evil man that he is."

"We're sure that he will confess?" Kantu asked, the harpy eagle cocking his head to the side, gray feathers reflecting the lamplight. "He hasn't shown any remorse for dismissing you to the provinces yet, as far as I've heard."

"Heh, have you heard much, breeder?" Asmund asked, the polar bear chuckling as he leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest. "From what I hear, you're keeping your head so low that it might as well be underground."

"You would do the same, if you had a family that wished for you to be married to another and breeding," Kantu muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I am better than that. Much better than that. I have my whole life ahead of me, still. I shouldn't be tied down to that."

"Just like I shouldn't be fucking stuck here instead of being chieftain up north, but here we are."

"Guys, guys. Let's not start this."

Dino nodded at his bodyguard, grateful for the intervention. The last thing they needed was to fall to squabbling before the appointed time.

He understood, though. Kantu had come to Espos some time ago, three or four years back, and they had become thick as thieves over their shared disdain for 'purpose' in life. Dino was bound to be King, eventually, but that would mean taking on more and more responsibility for the sake of the kingdom. He would lose more and more of his freedom, and while the reindeer wanted the best for his people, he didn't feel that he deserved to lose all his time to their happiness.

Likewise, he knew that Kantu didn't mean to completely abandon his family or his people, but the idea of being bound to some sort of breeding contract was hardly appealing for people their age. They still had decades of virility and fertility ahead of them. The fact that Kantu knew to come to him, to beg his case before the Prince that would be King, spoke to a great intelligence and maturity, in Dino's mind. The eagle knew what he needed, and he knew who could give it to him.

As for Asmund, the bear had been exiled from his tribe some time ago, and had made his way south, showing his power as a warrior with every step. The bear was the stuff of legends, as far as Dino was concerned, and if he hadn't already had a bodyguard, then Asmund would have been his first choice. As it stood, he already had plans for working with the bear, building up the kingdom's army and making it strong again, rather than leaving it as tax collectors as Jach had since used them. Such achievements would go a long way towards giving the bear the prestige he needed to take back his tribe.

Once I am king...

With friends like these, he would have advisors that wouldn't stab him in the back, and wouldn't betray him like Jach had betrayed his father. He clenched his fists tight for a second, then another, and then slowly relaxed.

"We are prepared then?" he asked.

"Heh, as prepared as we're gonna get," Asmund muttered, shaking his head as he leaned back. "Got the royal guard uniforms all ready. We'll change into 'em in the morning and make our way to the palace, meet you at the gate, and that's all there is to it, right?"

"There is more than that," Braford said, the bull shaking his head. "We protect the Prince while he confronts Jach. Once we have a confession from the dragon, we'll be able to take the throne back for our true king."

That was the plan, at least. Whether they were able to accomplish that, only time would tell, but Dino had faith in his friends.

"I asked before if he really will confess," Kantu said. "I want to believe that he can be forced to it, but do we really think that he will? He'd lose everything if he confessed to his crimes, and...well, it's not like we have much in the way of evidence."

"My father never would have proclaimed him king instead of me," Dino said, narrowing his eyes. "There is no way that King Dorro would have seen him as better-suited for the throne. I have been raised as a prince from my birth, and I know how the kingdom should be run. All the dragon offers is ideas, and we've seen where his ideas have taken Espos."

The whole of the kingdom faced corruption and ruin. The gray-scaled dragon had taken the place of the king, shipped Dino off to the provinces to 'learn and grow,' appointing him as a governor to 'see how the process works.' Despite his protests, the royal council had gone along with it, convinced that the dragon had been appointed to this task by the king himself.

"He says that I am to be king when I have gained enough experience, and when the council believes that I am ready," Dino said. "Let them see that I am ready. Let them see that I will take the throne, one way or another, and bring our kingdom back to a place of prosperity and goodness."

"An end to the taxmen and the evictions," Kantu said.

"A return to power and might," Asmund added.

"And a return to peace," Braford said.

"We'll bring it about. Together." Dino reached out, taking Braford's hand, and Asmund's. The loincloth-wearing bear chuckled, nodding his approval, and the slight fear on Kantu's face eased.

"I will force a confession from my father's advisor. I will bring my rapier to his throat, and I will tell him, 'Surrender the throne, or face death.' I will be king, tomorrow, and we will all achieve our dreams."

"I will hold you to that," Kantu said. "We all have something to lose, Prince."

"Then I will make sure we don't lose it. I am counting on you, my friends. Without you, this will fail. Without all of you by my side..."

"You have us, my liege," Braford said, the bull bowing his head. "And you always will."

"Heh. Not like I ever thought I'd promise myself to anyone, but hey. Better a prince than a chieftain that stabbed me in the back," Asmund said, shaking his head.

"And I will trust you with my life," Kantu added, the harpy eagle bowing his head. "I just hope that we all get what we deserve."

Dino nodded. He had every reason to believe that they would. Their friendship would carry the day, and Jach, for all that the dragon had great power, was only one man. He had no connections, no friends, only the council that he had bamboozled into supporting him. When they saw what the true prince brought with him, when they heard the truth from the dragon's mouth or saw him fall to a supposedly inexperienced prince, then they would know who the rightful king was.

Bloodshed was not Dino's first choice, but he knew better than to assume that everything would go peacefully. He had to be ready for a fight, or he would lose.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Tomorrow, we meet at the palace, dressed as proper guards. We will make our way to the council room, where Jach will be having a meeting with the various powers that be in the kingdom. They will not expect us, and there won't be any bodyguards there; Braford has confirmed this."

The bull nodded. His connections in the palace were one of the few advantages that they had, and he had every intention of using them.

"Once we're inside, Asmund will hold the doors, and Kantu, you will make sure that the other council members do not interfere. They must be nothing but an audience to this, understand?"

The harpy eagle nodded. Of all those assembled, he was the one most fleet of foot, most likely to be able to restrain someone before they did something stupid. Long, agile legs led to quick feet, and though he lacked the wings of some of the other avian species of the kingdom, he moved fast enough that one might assume him capable of such flight.

"That leaves me and Braford to confront the dragon," he said, shaking his head. "Jach will try and use pretty words to convince us to put this off, to say that we should be peaceful for the good of the kingdom. None of us must listen to him. His silver tongue must not be allowed to sway the day."

His friends nodded, and he nodded back. Thumping his hands against the table, he dismissed the meeting without a word, and Asmund and Kantu got to their feet. The bear patted his shoulder as he walked out, and Kantu bowed his head with a small smile at the very corner of his beak. Then they were gone, leaving him and Braford alone in the insulated room. The door closed, casting them into lantern-lit darkness once more.

"I thought that they would be more devoted," Dino admitted, shaking his head. "I didn't expect so many questions from Kantu."

"He's afraid," Braford said. "He doesn't have the fighting experience that the rest of us have."

"Heh..."

"What?" the bull asked, cocking his head to the side.

"Nothing. I just imagined him sitting on a nest in a decade or two, probably looking no different than he does now. Probably hating it, too."

"Heh. Not all Bearers are suitable for having children. Look at me; I'm too big and strong to be sent off to do something like that, heh."

"Heh. Who would have thought four Bearers would be the ones to save the kingdom, hmm?"

Bearers and Granters. In a world of men, that was the only way that the population could continue to propagate itself. He leaned against the table as he shook his head, wondering what the histories would say about him and his friends when everything shook itself out and the truth came free.

They would probably make some comment about one or all of them 'bearing' the future of the kingdom inside them when they broke into the meeting and made their demands. He could only imagine the comments that the storytellers would make, of the birth of a new nation and the end of the fake line of the dragon advisor. It would all come out, soon. Soon, Jach would be kicked out on his ass, and the true king would put Espos right again.

His bodyguard touched his hand, squeezing it until he turned to look. Braford looked down at him, adoration in his eyes, and the prince smiled back, slowly turning and pulling the bigger male into an embrace. He wrapped his arms tight around the bigger man, squeezing him close until he felt the same tight embrace all but crush the air from his lungs.

"Mmmph...I love you," he whispered.

"And I you, my liege."

He tilted his head back, sharing a brief kiss with the bull before he was shoved onto the table. He laughed despite himself, surrendering his body to his bodyguard. It wasn't the first time that the bull had used passion to distract him, and it wouldn't be the last.

The prince closed his eyes as his lover pulled at his pants, undoing the ties at his waist and loosening them until he could pull the leather trousers down. He lifted his hips off the table, making it that little bit easier as the bull wiggled them back and forth along his hips, then shucked them off with a single tug. They flew off his ankles, and his loincloth was flicked up to reveal his sex.

"Mmm...you will never not look delicious, prince," Braford said.

"Heh. You just love eating cunt."

"Well, yes."

"Well, eat away."

The reindeer spread his legs, using his fingers to fan his pussy open. As a Bearer, he had a slit instead of a shaft, as did Braford, Kantu, and Asmund. The four of them were all the same in that regard.

It wasn't that they were less, of course. Bearers and Granters were given the same rights under the law, and had the same expectations on them. A Granter could be sealed to a breeding contract the same as a Bearer could, and Kantu being a Granter would not have saved him from the fate that his family currently demanded of him. It would have only put it off for a little bit longer, given him a little more chance to wander the lands while his chosen partner was knocked up. He still wouldn't have been free.

As the bull leaned down, thick fingers gripping Dino's thighs, the reindeer raised his hips to meet the broad tongue already seeking him out. He groaned deep in his throat as it lapped over him, teasing him, making his pussy all the wetter as a result. It didn't take long before he was actively grinding up to meet every last lick and lap across his pussy, desperately trying to get that tongue inside of him and seeking its touch with his clit, his inner walls, every part of him that needed to be appreciated, worshiped, adored, and -

Squelch.

Then that tongue was inside of him, grinding into him, thrusting into him much like a cock would one day do. Dino moaned, his antlers scraping against the table under him as he thrust and humped against that tongue. He pushed it further in, his hands fumbling for the bull's head and pushing him down that much harder. Oh, that was what he needed. He needed it more than he realized, more than he knew, and he gasped as he kept hunching his hips -

Squelch, grind.

The bull's lips were locked against his sex, sucking on them, teasing him. He moaned, his eyes closing as he was eaten out. He panted, his mouth hanging open as he spread his legs further, unable to help himself.

"Mmmph...m-more..."

The bull obliged, thrusting his tongue deeper, grinding his lips against the reindeer's clit. The pressure and pleasure kept mounting, his body aching with the need that was building up faster and faster. He loved it, craved this feeling. It was what he always needed at the end of the day, always leading to him either sitting on Braford's face or offering himself up to be eaten out.

"Mmm...go on...more..."

The tongue slid out of him, going back to licking across the surface. He whimpered, but it brought its own pleasure with it, and the particular attention to his clit made his pleasure surge. He dripped, his juices running from his pussy down to his asshole, soaking him from clit to pucker, and he shivered at the sheer naughtiness of that.

Mmmph...never there...

As horny as he could get, and as desperate as he sometimes was to have something to fuck with, he knew better than to indulge it too hard. Two Bearers might use their fingers to tease each other, to build up their pleasure alongside their tongues. They could fuck each other's pussies with their hands, with toys, with tongue, and they could enjoy that. Two Granters, on the other hand...

Anal is forbidden...just pussy...

In that way, the fact that they were two Bearers fucking was better than if they had been two Granters. No way for them to get it wrong this way. No way for them to run afoul of the church with their pleasure if they only had holes to fill rather than shafts to take.

Dino moaned louder as his bull gripped him by the thighs, lifting him off the table and pinning his pussy against the bigger male's tongue. He was no longer just licking, but grinding that tongue over his pussy, teasing it to the point where he could only scream in pleasure in response. His hired guards outside might hear him, he didn't know, but the idea that they might know that their prince was getting off with his bodyguard - oh, it didn't matter. If anything, he almost found that idea to be even more sensual.

Thrust.

Lick.

Lap.

Squelch.

He rode that pleasure, his eyes rolling back more and more in their sockets as he felt his climax right around the corner. He could barely breathe as it got closer and closer, his hips bucking in little spasms against that tongue. It went back inside of him, wriggling against his clit, then against his g-spot, teasing him right to the edge of what he could take, right to the point of -

"NNNGH!"

The prince arched his back as he came, his pussy clenching down and his juices squirting free. The heavy scent of breeding-sex filled the air, and he shivered as he felt every bit of tension run right out of him. Anxiety and fear that he hadn't realized were under the confidence that he had been projecting to his friends faded away, replaced with pure pleasure and soft bliss. He leaned back against the table as his bull lover lowered him down, huffing and puffing as he caught his breath. His body was soaked with sweat, his fur matted down against his chest and face, but he felt better. So much better.

Braford cupped his face, smiling down at him. There was that same dull, slightly dim look in his eyes. He'd never seen a great brain in his lover, but that didn't matter. His muscles, his devotion, his heart was all that the reindeer needed.

"Will you remember me when you are king?" Braford asked.

"Remember you?" Dino chuckled, shaking his head. "I will never forget you, even if I were to become a god. I would always see you at my side, always bring you with me. When I become king, you will no longer be my bodyguard; you will be Lord Protector."

"Heh..."

"And you will see to it that I am protected and pleased, every night." He smiled. "That is a royal command, my love. A command that I hope that you take very seriously."

"Hehehe, I will. I will, my liege."

"Kiss me."

And Braford did.

#

The next day came with all the stress and fear that Dino had known it would. The release from the night before was forgotten, replaced with nothing but the fear of what would happen if they got this wrong.

We won't get it wrong, he thought, resisting the urge to pull on the black and blue royal uniform he wore as they walked through the palace halls. We all know the plan. All we have to do is follow it.

He and Braford walked the corridors from the Great Hall to the council chamber. They would meet up with Asmund and Kantu halfway there, near the armory, and the bear and harpy eagle would have their weapons ready. They would arm up, proceed as if they were just standard guards - Braford was the only one of them that the palace guards might recognize, and he had reason to be here from time to time - and then make their way to the council room.

Once there...

He gritted his teeth as he imagined Jach. The gray dragon stood seven feet tall, towering over him and even over his own father. Dorro had been a good king before the advisor showed up, and - even though it galled Dino to admit it - there had been counsel that Jach had given that had improved the kingdom. The land, as a whole, had become more peaceful since the dragon's arrival, and he had ensured that the armed forces of the kingdom had slowly diminished, reducing the threat that they posed to those bordering them. The fact that Espos had disarmed first had been a show of faith that had, surprisingly, worked, and it had encouraged the other kingdoms to take a step back from war.

But that had changed once Dorro had died.

Faking documents to get me sent away, holding the throne out of my reach, taxing people out of their homes and sending 'delinquents' to the church to be marked with the Heretic's Brand...

It was not the work of a good king. That the people had not yet risen against him didn't mean that they approved, merely that they weren't aware of where this was going. They didn't know that they could very easily become the next ones that were brought low rather than the 'criminals' that had been punished thus far.

A king that does what he wishes without thought will always be a king at risk of hurting his people.

Dino would not let that happen. Not anymore. He would be a good king, and good kings always displaced bad ones.

They rounded the corner and found Asmund and Kantu waiting. As planned, they joined up, moving like guardsmen on patrol. Kantu passed him a rapier, and he tucked it into his belt, making sure that it was secure before moving on.

It didn't take long to move from the armory to the council chambers. The room was above the throne room, and he remembered that it had a balcony that allowed those within to look down at the great courtyard of the palace. His father had made many a speech from that balcony, and it would be the perfect place to force a confession, not just in front of the council proper, but in front of all the soldiers gathered below.

Today I take back what is mine. Today, the kingdom turns around.

The four friends stopped outside the council room, the door unguarded. Dino looked at Asmund, then Braford. The two muscular men nodded, taking their positions on either side of the door. Kantu was ready behind him, the eagle leaning forward and ready to sprint.

"Three...two...one."

Asmund and Braford threw the doors open. As Kantu leaped inside, Dino moved with speed, darting in. The doors slammed shut behind him as he took in the situation.

The room was large, perhaps thirty paces across, and dominated with a map table in the center of the room. Jach stood at the head of the table, the furthest away that he could be without being on the balcony proper. Other councilors - noblemen and advisors of Espos - stood at either side of the table. The myriad species blinked as he entered the room, his name on their lips as they muttered to each other.

But for all the rich colors of the social butterflies all around him, Dino's attention was inevitably drawn back to the dragon at the head of the table. As Asmund slammed the door shut and rammed the wooden bar down over the double-doors, and as Kantu rushed about, herding the nobles in place, the reindeer drew his rapier and walked around the side of the table.

He would have loved to see even a hint of fear on the dragon's face, but there was none of that. No discomfort, no surprise, merely a small, compassionate smile on his face as he looked up from the table. The crown of the kingdom rested on Jach's head, perched between his horns, and he wore the same royal purple that Dino's father used to wear. The great cloak, hemmed in gold and silver, ran down his shoulders and rested on the floor, a cape that dwarfed the richness of whatever else he wore.

"Prince Dino. I cannot say that this is worthy of you. Please, put down your weapon and talk with me; this is something that we can negotiate, I'm sure. What brings you back to the capitol?"

"My birthright," Dino said, shaking his head. "And the sake of the kingdom."

"The kingdom? My good prince, you know what your father wished -"

"You have lied about what my father wished ever since he took to his deathbed!" he shouted, swishing his blade through the air. "And today is the day that you confess to your crimes, in front of all the great people of the kingdom."

In the background, he could hear the confused - yet disapproving - mutters of the nobility and the council. They didn't know, they didn't understand. They had been fed on the dragon's lies for years now, years of his poison dripping in their ears and convincing them of his rightful place. Dino walked further around the table, hearing Braford's hoofbeats at his back as he approached the former advisor, and the current illegitimate king.

"Whatever tricks you pulled, this is the day that they all come to light," he said, raising the point of his sword. "There is nothing that you can do to keep this deception going. My father, King Dorro, may have suggested that I needed more experience. I grant that. He may have believed that I needed more time to come into my own, but in what fevered dream would he have declared you his replacement?"

"Why, in the world that we live in, Prince Dino," the dragon said, bowing his head with a small sigh. "Ah, but is this not the evidence that he is not ready yet, my lords? Look at this young man and see what his passion has driven him to do. He comes with armed men to a meeting of the council and demands that I confess to things that never happened, merely so he can claim a throne. Is this the action of someone that is ready for responsibility?"

"It is the action of someone that will not let you corrupt the land any further," Dino said. "Do you think I would risk my father's kingdom for vanity, for pride?"

"What other reason would you have?"

"To see you brought to justice."

As Braford brought his blade to the dragon's throat, Dino turned to the assembly. They were men that he had known since his childhood, and many of them knew him. He looked from face to face, hoping to see some sympathy, some understanding, some sign that they were on his side, but there was nothing. Instead, he saw fear, confusion, judgment.

They believed that he was mad.

They believed that the dragon was speaking the truth.

He turned back to Jach, shaking his head as he brought his rapier up.

"You have turned them against me. Against the very people that they are meant to govern. What have you promised them?"

"Only what the king has always given his council," the dragon said, shaking his head. "Riches taxed from the people, power over those that need to be governed, and the guidance to bring our land into greater prosperity."

A sense of helplessness seized him, then. He had thought that a show of force, combined with surprise, would be enough to shock the dragon into confession. Surely, fear for his life and the righteousness of Dino's cause should have done something to turn the tide, to make the dragon understand how in the wrong he was. That was the way that it always went, in the stories. How was Jach still standing firm? How did he still have support?

He pushed Braford out of the way, grabbing the dragon by the shoulder and holding the point of his sword against Jach's neck. The blade pricked at the dragon's scales, not quite drawing blood, but right on the verge of doing so. A faint hint of fear flickered in the dragon's eyes, and Dino would have been lying if he said that the sight of it didn't bring him some satisfaction.

"Confess, or I will end your life right here, right now," he whispered. "Better that the land fail to have a king at all than to suffer with you on the throne."

"..."

"Confess!" he shouted.

Jach stared down the blade as Dino held it as still as he could. Fear, anger, and so much more roared through the reindeer's veins. This was supposed to be his destined return, his rise to power, his way of fixing everything that the dragon had broken. Why was this going exactly the wrong way?

The silence between them stretched on. His threat felt emptier and emptier the longer that he waited; Dino knew that he had to do something to avoid looking like he wouldn't follow through, but now that he'd made his demands, he realized how shaky his political footing really was. He had no support in the council chamber, nobody calling his name or demanding that the dragon speak up and explain himself.

He cast me out, and he made sure that there would be nothing for me here...

The bloodline of King Dorro meant nothing to the bought-and-paid-for council. To them, he was nothing but a piece of the past, and his display, far from showing them that he had grown, had shown him as desperate.

What do I do? What can I do?

Finally, Jach sighed. The dragon reached up and touched his finger to the blade, a singular scaly digit gently nudging it off to the side.

"My lords, it seems that there is nothing that can be done. Our prince has proven himself not only inexperienced, but a threat to the realm. The fact that he would come here, before all of us, and threaten me with death says that he cares nothing for the world, but merely for his own ambitions. It is for the sake of us all that I do what I do."

"You will do nothing to my prince," Braford said, the bull moving in front of him.

"Those that stand with the rebel prince will share the same fate."

With nothing but a wave of his hand, the dragon summoned darkness. Dino's eyes went wide as it swept across the floor of the council chamber, seizing first Braford, then him. It lifted them off the ground, suspending them a foot and a half in the air, and it twisted about their arms and legs as it bound them tight.

More of it spread, seizing Asmund by the scruff of his neck and yanking him away from the door. As more of it spread across his back, running down his spine and around his hips and binding him tightly all the while, other strands rushed for Kantu. The harpy eagle leaped back, avoiding the first group, but more wrapped around his legs, tangling about his ankles and lifting him off the ground. He was upside-down compared to the rest of them, but he was still held tight.

Dark magic...

Jach had captured them all with power that none of them had seen before, magic that had little place in the kingdom of Espos. Surely, surely this would have the attention of the council. He grunted, looking to his side, desperate for something, anything that showed that they were snapping free of the hold that Jach had on them.

One of you…any of you…

The councilors and noblemen stared, their jaws slack. Fear spread from one face to another, and it was more of a reaction than any of them had shown yet. Would it be enough? Would it be enough to change things?
