The nurse looks at me and asks, "You don't have any money?"

I shake my head and say "I don't have anything other than the clothes on my back and Mirabelle my zangoose."

The nurse worriedly looks at me and asks "How are you going to pay your hospital bill then?"

Before I can answer I hear a voice behind her say "I'll pay his hospital bill."

I look past the nurse and see Dennis behind her. He walks over to my bed and says to Mirabelle and I "Good morning. Charles you're now a registered pokemon trainer. Sorry about the early visit but I wanted to say goodbye to you before you left."

He smiles and says, "My mom is a doctor and my dad owns the department store in Lilycove city, so I have a lot of money to spend."

I think for a moment before asking "Where should I go to first? I'm getting released from the hospital today but I don't know where to go after I get out."

He thinks for a moment before saying "I got an idea, I'll just go with you and I can help you along the way and give you advice. I don't have to go anywhere soon because I'm just waiting for the elite four competition to start."

I reply, "That would be great. Thank you so much. I wish I had some way to repay you but right now the only things I own are the clothes on my back, the items you gave me, and Mirabelle."

He smiles and says "Your welcome. Why don't you and Mirabelle go outside the city and train for a bit. Your going to need to know what moves she knows and what each of them do. Plus it will get you some experience with battling."

I nod and begin to gather up the items he had given me and put them in my parachute's pack like a backpack. While I'm packing up Dennis goes to the desk and gets the hospital to let me leave. He comes back up ten minutes later and says "I got your release papers here and you're free to leave the hospital whenever you like."

I nod and put my makeshift backpack on my back. Five minutes later I walk out of the hospital with Mirabelle at my feet and Dennis on my left. We walk for about ten minutes without talking. When we get outside of the city Dennis says, "Out here there should be some wild pokemon you can battle. If you look hard enough you should find a few. Battling them should get you prepared for your first gym battle in Rustboro city."

I nod as I start searching for pokemon to battle as we walk down the road. We had been walking for about five minutes when I saw a bush on the right side of the road move. I run towards the bush with Mirabelle close behind me. As I approach the bush a small green pokemon with a red diamond on its chest. When it looks too it's left and sees me, it runs towards me. The larvitar looks at me confused and says "Not that I know of."

I reply by asking, "Then how can I understand you?"

The larvitar replies "I don't know. My name is Adalene by the way."

I say, "My name is Charles."

Dennis asks me "Are you able to understand that larvitar?"

I nod my head and say "Yeah I can. Aren't you able to understand her?

He shakes his head and says, "Most people can't understand pokespeak but there have been a few people who can understand pokespeak and you must be one those few people if you can understand her."

I nod my head and ask, "So if I can understand pokespeak it means I can understand what any pokemon is saying right?"

Dennis nods his head and says "Yeah."

I think for a moment before asking Dennis "Could you send out one of your pokemon so I can learn how to battle pokemon?"

Dennis nods his head as he reaches down to his belt that was holding five pokeballs and he grabs one. He pushes a button and the ball grows three times the size it once was before he throws it and yells "Come on out Degenhard!"

When the ball hits the ground a white light shines out of the ball. The light takes the form of a large dog before the light disappears leaving a large red and black dog where the light once was. After Degenhard had appeared Dennis says to me "Degenhard is a shiny Arcanine. Normally an Arcanine's fur is orange and black but as you can see Degenhard's fur is red and black. Shiny pokemon are extremely rare and are highly valued by trainers."

I nod and ask, "So how do I battle pokemon?"

Dennis answers, "Well first you are going to send out one of your pokemon."

I look at Mirabelle and Adalene and think for a moment before saying "Mirabelle your up first."

Mirabelle runs about ten feet in front of me before standing on her hind legs. Dennis waits for her to stand up before saying "In a pokemon battle the trainers tell their pokemon what attack to use against the opposing pokemon. The attacks are alternated until one of the pokemon battling faints. The pokemon that faints loses the battle. You can see what attacks Mirabelle knows and a description of the attacks in the team status checker function on your pokedex. It also shows the level of your pokemon, your pokemon's stats, and other information of the sort. To get to the team status checker on your pokedex press the blue button on the left side of the screen. To see the moves each pokemon knows tap the pokemon's name on the screen. Tap any move on the screen and a description of the move will appear. To go back to the list of your pokemon, tap the small square in the top right corner of the list."

I pull out my pokedex and push the button that Dennis had told me to push. The screen on the pokedex shows a list with Mirabelle and Adalene's names on it. To the left of the name was the pokemon's level and to the right were the pokemon's stats. Mirabelle was level forty-three and Adalene was level twenty-nine. I tap Mirabelle's name and a list of the attacks she knew appears. She knew the attacks crush claw, fury cutter, leer, quick attack, slash, and taunt. I read the description of each move and memorize each of the attacks and their description before saying "So when do we begin?"

Dennis smiles and says "Whenever your ready. You can have the first move since you are new to pokemon battles."

I reply, "Well I'm ready. Mirabella use fury cutter. Try to aim for Degenhard's legs."

Mirabelle runs towards Degenhard on her four legs. When she is about ten feet from Degenhard Dennis yells "Degenhard flamethrower."

I counter, "Mirabelle run slightly to your left and roll under his flamethrower towards him. When you're under him kick the back of his front legs to knock him to the ground. Then follow up with a quick attack to the stomach."

Mirabelle runs to the left of Degenhard just as he unleashes a large flamethrower. She rolls underneath him and kicks Degenhard in the knees and knocks him to the ground. Dennis smiles and says, "You're a natural at battling pokemon so your first gym battle should be no problem to you."

He returns Degenhard to his pokeball and we continue walking down the road towards Rustboro City. I leave my pokemon out of their pokeballs and let them walk beside me.

*****April 11, 2008; 6:53 p.m.*****

We had been walking all day towards Rustboro City since this morning and only stopping for lunch. According to Dennis we were about two hours away from Rustboro City. I thanked Nurse Joy and told her I would keep an eye on Mirabelle. We then left and continued walking towards Rustboro City. Dennis stops and says "Why don't we stop here and set up camp for tonight then tomorrow we can head to Rustboro City and you can battle the gym leader."

I nod my head and I put my pack on the ground and open it up so I could pull out the small two person hiking tent that Dennis had bought in Verdanturf Town for Mirabelle and I. The tent was very light and only weighed about five pounds. When I had set up the tent I offered to Dennis to cook dinner but he insisted that he cook and I rest for a bit while he cooked. Since he wouldn't let me cook I decided to look for a river or lake that I could bathe in. I found a small lake that was hidden behind some bushes about 500 yards away from camp.
