Story Description: Vrelgor's path takes him to the arid lands of a desert. The heat annoys him, his companion refuses to share everything he knows, and that is the least of the blue dragon's problems...

** ***Dragon's Path 24: Blooming Consequences*****

Vrelgor flew towards the Red Mountains. Or at least he thought he did.

"Where are we?" Vrelgor looked around. Aside from dunes of sand, a mountain chain far to the east and a speck of green under the blinding form of the sun, he didn't see anything familiar.

"Far enough from the Lake City to be safe," RuSturak said.

"It feels so warm..." Vrelgor shifted his paws through the sand. The ground literally burned, not enough to harm his feet, but enough to become an annoyance to his exposed wings. "What are we supposed to do now?"

"We wait," RuSturak said as he shifted the sand with his tail. He laid down in his nest, stretching his pale sandy wings and laying them flat on the ground.

"You're going to overheat."

"Mrrrhh, not likely," RuSturak rumbled in contentment. "Legend has it my kin was born under this sky. Bronze dragons with scales as golden as the sands themselves. I know what it can do as well as I know my own scales."

"Careful not to spill. I dread to think what this warmth might do to that particular place between your legs considering how highly you speak of it," Vrelgor growled drily.

RuSturak said nothing after that, and Vrelgor grew quite bored waiting for answers that never came. He made his way around a buried settlement. He didn't know if it belonged to humans, dragons, or something else. The thing looked like a dune from afar, only that this dune had all manner of weird protrusions that immediately gave it away. And that was only the top. Vrelgor wondered how much of this settlement was buried beneath his paws. Did other dragons remain inside its darkened bowels? How many of them died, their roars of agony muffled by the series of twisting tunnels? Nobody heard them. They were forgotten. Alone. Scared, maybe.

Vrelgor leaped. With a flap of his wings, he pushed himself off the ground, sand flowing through his clawed toes before it embraced his paws shortly after. He fell belly first onto the hot sand, splaying like a playful whelp. Vrelgor rolled on his back. With the sand's warmth under his back and the sun falling onto his blue belly, he finally understood why RuSturak chose to settle in this place.

"I wonder what he's thinking. Not that he's going to share it with me. He treats me like one of his kobold friends...particularly the stupid ones that act before they think. I'm not like that...at least not as much as I used to be."

Vrelgor beat his wings. They started to sweat from the heat. He rolled back onto his paws and made his way back to RuSturak. His emerald eyes stared at the distant shades of green. An oasis, perhaps?

"What are we waiting for?"

"A friend," the bronze dragon casually said. "You remember when I left you alone to feast on that stag?

"Yes. You told me you've gone to relieve yourself in the forest."

"Not quite," RuSturak admitted. "In truth, I made a certain arrangement that will see us past the empire's borders without a host of bounty hunters after our tails."

Vrelgor didn't even want to know about that certain bargain. "Your friend is running late."

"He's not a friend."

"That would be a first."

Vrelgor' cheerful demeanor curled into a moaning snarl when his back was smacked by a big hard tail.

"Awrrr, what was that for?"

"Realign your purpose. This is not a game."

"I wholeheartedly apologize for my unintelligent behavior," Vrelgor growled. "I can't help but treat it as such when you're not willing to tell me anything about...well, anything!"

"I told you before. What you know can and will become a liability. Trust me on this one. I lived among humans long enough to know them."

"That's what Dahrzin said right after he declared you a traitorous scale-head," the blue dragon hissed.

"He said worse things about me. Just wait, my dear blue. Trust my judgment, and we shall arrive at the Red Mountains before you know it."

"I do trust you," he bridged the gap between them and gave the golden dragon a fond lick along his neck. "I just...I want to be prepared, like you are."

"That is what I'm trying to tell you. By knowing nothing, saying nothing, doing nothing, you will ensure the success of my negotiations. Settle down now and wait. Our contact should be here before the sun starts to set."

Vrelgor did just that. He snuggled under RuSturak's wing and groomed his paws until even his tongue grew bored with the monotony of his scales, claws, padded underside and everything.

Then, something changed. The sand shifted. No. It thrummed with the arrival of someone else. Something else.

Vrelgor couldn't make out the creature's appearance from a distance. It walked quickly, on two legs, and it had a...tail? From its back rose a thick protrusion. Vrelgor realized that was actually a rider when the reptilian creature approached enough to become more distinguishable. It was a strider of the desert, dark scales bearing the color of moss covering it from snout to tail. Its black claws were sharp and made for grabbing like a gryphon's talons, and its eyes, a faded green, looked at him with predatory intent.

"Gruhen'gar," the rider growled with the voice of a crumbling mountain. The strider skidded to a stop, allowing the rider to drop onto the sand.

Vrelgor flinched at the shockwave that followed. This reptilian behemoth was huge. It was surprising how the strider bore all that weight upon its back. The rider was some sort of wingless dragon. Thick plates covered it from neck to belly. A narrow slit ran between its legs. Vrelgor realized from a single breath the creature was male, but then again he did look big. His arms were more muscular than a dragon's, and his legs thick and stable, with broad feet to keep all that lumbering mass of flesh and plates steady.

"Mhrargggg, you," a crooked claw pointed at Vrelgor. "Two dragon. Was told one."

"That is what we initially agreed upon," RuSturak sealed the gap between Vrelgor and the two legged reptilian.

"Then why bring this rahz'gurio to bend the rules? We had deal, dragon, and I never break deal."

RuSturak refused to budge. Was it wise? The reptilian didn't seem pleased at all, its slitted amber eyes always finding Vrelgor no matter how he shifted and slinked behind RuSturak.

"You will find this deal much more profitable. Please listen to me."

"Ghar'krak! Ten heartbeats. Then I split puny whelp in half and eat him with my Grysha."

Vrelgor lay low. He didn't want to become anyone's meal. If the worst came to happen, he could defend himself. The reptilian had what? A little beast of burden and two furry friends. His claws would sink through them faster than they could blink...

If they were untrained. Vrelgor's eyes darted between the two of them. One was a tawny feline similar in size with the one that visited him in his chamber one time to feed him supper. A stick thrower lay on its back, bow as it was commonly called by the two legged races. Vrelgor wasn't worried about wood and metal. It was the other feline that gave him a slight pause. That one had a long blade that tapered to a barbed point. A spear? Could have been a sword too. He couldn't see much from here.

The leader was by far the biggest threat. Vrelgor saw no easy ways to pierce past his armored hide, and it had weapons. Two blades held upon his back and something else held within the two pouches strapped on the rope circling his loins. The two legged races never looked like much, but they made up for their deficit through sheer ingenuity.

RuSturak's tail shifted. He was walking away, with the reptilian and everyone. Vrelgor tensed. He saw the sign RuSturak weaved with his tail. Do nothing. Say nothing. Know nothing. That's what he needed to do. But instincts be damned, he really wanted to be part of the conversation. Vrelgor struggled to hear what they said. They weren't far, but the growly voice of the reptilian turned every coherent sound into a jumbled mess.

"Is deal," he slammed his heavy palms together. "Whelp comes."

Vrelgor tensed. Why was the reptilian coming to him? He looked at RuSturak in a desperate bid for answers, but the reptilian's heavy paw slammed into his jaw, hard fingers keeping his head uncomfortably straight.

"Mrarrgh. Fearful. Puny." The slitted nostrils approached more and more, so close to his snout. The reptilian bared his fangs. It took a lot from Vrelgor to snuffle the growl of revulsion that came along with that wave of fetid breath.

"Inside."

Inside where?

"Zhar'vrah," clawed fingers pushed the dragon's lips up. "Small teeth. Soft. Weak," he pulled back with a disappointed grunt. "You dragon, or whelp?"

A heavy punch took Vrelgor straight in the chest, pushing him back. He curled his claws into the sand. Say nothing. Do nothing. Think nothing. He just felt as the reptilian's hand traversed along his belly, and waited for his next move.

"Belly armored, but side is weak!"

Another slap came, this time right under his wing. "Blade here, here, here," the reptilian tapped a claw repeatedly. "Single blow. Dead, from loss of blood. And these?" he grabbed a wing next, squeezing the joint so hard the muscle compressed within his grip. "I can break them like twig!"

The claws came into play. Soon, the pain became seething agony.

"Grawwrrr!" Vrelgor burst, flapping his wing, trying to shake that bastard off.

"Cry. Cry, like whelp! Kar'zur. Weak. Like female. But I do not smell female."

Crashing weight slammed into his side. The ground shifted under his paws, and Vrelgor fell on his side, his privates helplessly exposed before the reptilian's intense gaze. His thin slits stared with utmost disappointment. The reptilian's nostrils moved closer to take the scent. They widened and narrowed repeatedly, inhaling sharply. He was close now, very close, hovering right outside his entrance. Why was he lingering? It was like he enjoyed what he smelled.

The same could not be said for Vrelgor. Each gust of air felt cold like the fear rushing through his tense frame.

"Male," the reptilian finally growled out, flashing rows of dangerous teeth. "Smell like male. Look like male, but you do not feel like male."

Hard, scaly fingers pushed through his slit, dragging the dragon's soft cock into a ruthless grip Vrelgor learned to fear. The two legged beast squeezed him hard, feeling his cock inside his rugged palm, irritating the soft skin with his broken scales before he let him go.

Vrelgor expected another low blow.

But instead of a blow or a claw, the reptilian slid his wet, bifurcated tongue along the wet rift of his slit,, shifting between the muscles, then rolling along his cock until he swallowed, lips raised to expose his dripping teeth.

"Taste just like female. When task done, I fill you with seed. With strength! You as dragon as snake is to me," the reptilian slapped his mighty chest, then turned sights and feet away from Vrelgor.

"Whelp comes with us. Bring Ja'kun I'lak, dragon," the two legged reptile pointed back. "Take him like mother takes pup."

Vrelgor felt relieved when RuSturak approached his position. The discomfort slowly fled from his slit, the allure of a dragon's careful tongue filling him with the comfort of safety.

"What does that mean?" Vrelgor forced himself to speak. "I can't...understand him..."

RuSturak rolled his tongue around the soft cock. He took it inside his maw, suckling gently, bathing the irritated flesh with caressing waves of pure comfort. The embrace of something moist felt like a female's cunt around a dragon's cock. Vrelgor wished he could just cum. Cum and wash the pain away through spurts of rushing pleasure.

"Don't get hard."

"I...I won't. Please. Tell me what he meant."

RuSturak dashed another lick. "I do not know either. Two-legs have their own language. They see the world differently than we do. To them, we are unjust conquerors who trespass on their lands, kill or rape their kin, and bring chaos to their ordinary lives."

"That is not true! You've been to the Herald's home. You've seen how dragons and beasts can lived together in the same-"

RuSturak cut in with a hiss. "We shall talk another time. For now it is best if we follow our mutual acquaintance."

Vrelgor sighed. He wished he could just remain here and cum. RuSturak didn't suck his cock hard enough to coax an erection, nor he lapped at his slit long enough to make the flesh hard. Three strokes had his snout up in the air, far removed from the shuddering flesh.

"Are you still in pain?"

"A bit," Vrelgor rolled onto his feet "Nothing I cannot manage."

"Let us proceed."

The two dragons surrounded the small group of two-legs, who rode or walked through the sands depending on their status. The two felines were agile on their feet. None showed any signs of weariness. Grysha the strider had her maw slightly open though. No wonder. Carrying the weight of the biggest bastard in the world made for an arduous task. Still, Vrelgor had no grudge for her. She was female, even smelled similar to a dragoness, and for a fleeting moment he wondered if she tasted like one.

His thoughts were quickly replaced with apprehension when the reptilian's eyes looked with a fugitive glance. It was a short contact, but from that moment Vrelgor knew his status.

If he did nothing to protect himself, he would quickly become the reptilian's whelp. But what? What could he do? How? When?

There were just too many unanswered questions, and he was certainly not going to get any help from RuSturak. Eyes ahead, wings held against his form, and walking with a quick gait, the golden dragon seemed bent on reaching his goal.

Vrelgor found out some of the answers laying behind one of the bigger dunes. Nine or so slabs of black stone were placed one behind the other in a much too organized fashion. As he approached more, he found out why. Little lizard men -kobolds, as he knew these upwards walking lizards to be called- walked from one end of the caravan to the other, tying ropes and even entering inside. Vrelgor couldn't see what hid inside the containers. It must have been something precious considering how expensive blackstone was. At the head of the caravan were two of the weirdest creatures he ever laid eyes upon. They looked like lizards, had scales on certain parts of their bodies, equipped with tails, claws, and legs...only that the latter were a bit too many. Two pairs at the front, two at the back, with another one sprouting in the middle gave the creatures a rather grotesque appearance along with a great traction power, for once the ropes were tied and the creatures harnessed, the entirety of the caravan started moving at the same speed as the creatures themselves. It wasn't much, of course, but to haul nine blocks of solid blackstone? Even the mightiest of dragons would relent from such task.

Like before, Vrelgor couldn't interact with RuSturak, who was posted on the other part of the caravan. He stood near the middle, with a group of three armed felines walking ahead and more following from behind. Probably a safety measure in case he tried to flee. Vrelgor felt relieved. He preferred the pointy end of a crafted weapon over the crooked claws of a weird reptilian. Felines also smelled interesting. Only a few wore pelts around their privates, and as such the smells carried freely upon the wind. Males had a slightly sharper odor. Females were a bit tamer. Vrelgor favored them both. He breathed in their combined fragrances, imagining himself being treated by these fluffy attendants. Fur was a luxury afforded by few, and there were many, many ways a feline could use to pleasure a dragon.

After they passed the first dune, the guards changed positions. They all retreated behind, forcing Vrelgor to go near the front. He took one step after the other, apprehensive and shy, eyes trying to spot the reptilian's frame. Luckily, he wasn't standing on the basilisks themselves, but on a special spot where he could maneuver both at the same time. Vrelgor let his fears ooze out. The blocks were large enough to obstruct the view. No eye contact meant no interaction, so he allowed his eyes to wander back to the two sturdy creatures. More specifically, to the place between their legs. They had no balls or any form of external genitalia. It was to be expected from a creature that was entirely covered in hardened plates, but Vrelgor could see where their genders started and where they ended. It was a thick pale colored line that split the plates in half. Which one was the male? And which was the female?

He had a good amount of time to ponder upon this vital issue, yet fortune was not entirely with him. One, the scents of the basilisks were almost the same.

Two, Vrelgor was so distracted by his musings that only now he realized there was an entire outpost ahead of him. Two pairs of gryphons sailed above while a mixture two-legs wandered about the walls and towers erected along the dunes.

The caravan stopped just in front of the gate.

"What are you carrying?"

The growly voice unmistakably belonged to a reptilian. Probably dragon, though Vrelgor wasn't sure. His job was to know nothing, so he laid as low as he could, making himself small against the cold surface of the blackstone.

"Goods, for Kar'Shakir."

"Has this trade been authorized?"

The reptilian snorted. "Blackstone. See? Solid. Worth more than hundred dragon eggs."

"Yes, I know it was impossible to acquire these storage units on your own, but I need to know more than just the destination."

"Kron'garrrrr," the reptilian growled. "Dragon, you tell this weak minded kin why we trade."

Vrelgor tensed. He wasn't just getting summoned, was he?

RuSturak started speaking. "The trade laws between the Red Mountains and the Empire forbid any form of inquiry. You've seen our caravan and the seal we carry. Let us proceed. It would be unwise to stir trouble."

"Just asking well intentioned questions, bright scales," the dragon paused for a moment. "Yes, I see the sigils now. I apologize. My gaze missed them for a moment. I assume the beasts are accounted for?"

"Veraldian basilisks, bought and paid for. Their underside is marked with the mark of the beastwards to attest their provenience. Want to see that as well?"

"No, it's...it's good," the dragon spoke. "I can tell they're healthy. Fertile, unlike those bred outside their birthing grounds. Isn't it strange how they lose their ability to breed?"

"The sun is as important to them as meat or water. Take it away, and they wither." RuSturak said. "Would there be anything else?"

"I would like to make a quick inspection of the contents, if I may."

The reptilian growled so loud even the felines tensed.

"You may not," RuSturak added with a hiss. "The contents are for our contractor only."

"Understandable. I shall check the number of guards and let you on your way."

RuSturak had no answer to that, and the dragon that spoke soon revealed itself as a blue eyed youngling bearing the young green of fresh leaves upon his scales. Their eyes met for the briefest of moments. Then, the dragon circled the caravan, breathing, growling, counting until he came a full circle.

"Ten able bodied felines, thirty five kobolds, two dragons and a caravan leader, correct?"

"Yarrrghh," the reptilian growled. "Move. Now."

"It's...there is a slight problem. Dragons are allowed to assist in the guarding of important possessions but only in very small numbers."

"Speak plainly!"

The dragon's wings twitched. "You cannot have two males accompany the same caravan. A pair works, but two males might pose a threat to the stability of the treaty."

The reptilian jumped on the ground, stirring a cloud of dust and growls. Vrelgor almost thought he was going to cut the young dragon in half with his thin swords. Instead, the reptilian pushed his head past his horns, whispering a string of audible words.

"Two kobolds."

"Three," the drake hissed shyly. "My sister and my brother...they would very much enjoy- graarrrr!" the drake's head bent under the force of the reptilian who slammed him against the blackstone with a furious blow.

"Dearrrhh! Deal!"

Nobody looked. No dragon, no two-legs, not even the felines. The leaf green youngling accepted the bargain on the spot and let the caravan roll forward like nothing happened.

Vrelgor walked with it. The tall pillars went past on either side. Soon, even the flying scouts were forgotten to his mind.

But he could never forget a certain savage growl that always made his scales tingle with apprehension. The burly reptilian jumped on the ground with a growl, a hulking mass of hard scales, plates, and muscles.

"Three! You cost me three kobolds!"

"I...I didn't...I-"

The blow took him like a storm, and Vrelgor fell on the ground faster than he could blink. His legs were flung aside like grains of sand, and his slit pressed painfully against the reptilian's hand.

"Listen, weakling. You fly now. Search for me. If I want to, even die for me. One kobold? Grah!" he forced a finger through the dragon's fleshy rift, forcing a pitiful whine from the dragon's throat. "One kobold worth ten of you. Fly!"

Vrelgor scrambled onto his legs. Within a moment, he was airborne, flapping as far and as fast as he could away from that monster. Who was he, anyway? Vrelgor hated not knowing anything about his enemies.

"I'll kill him," he bared his fangs as sweat oozed from the blue membrane of his wings. "Maybe not now. Not tomorrow. But I'm going to take my revenge on that cruel, black hearted creature!"

"I wouldn't advise that."

Vrelgor whipped his head around. RuSturak. Of course. He was always here to entangle judgment and provide nothing in return.

"Leave me," Vrelgor veered away. He wanted to be alone right now, and the sky was so calm, so gentle. The desert stretched below his clawtips. It was vast, somewhat beautiful from up here, with all the mounds of sand and the patterns created by the sweeping wind. A few lonely mountains rose randomly in clusters of three to five, making quite a good nesting ground for dragons.

He focused his eyes on the horizon, where the air itself shimmered from the heat. Daylight was a real menace. The sweat on his wings evaporated almost instantly to provide instant relief, and scales reflected the sun's bite. How could the felines live with all their fur? How could the reptilian? Vrelgor decided to name him Growls, because he growled a lot and acted more like a beast. A fitting name for a monster. He made plans in his mind. Ways to get back at Growls. One involved biting his cock off as soon as he became aroused. Another involved the opposite, staining him with urine and seed, and when humiliation gnawed at his form, Vrelgor would finally end his misery with a quick bite to the head.
