B.F.H Chapter 4:The Death Of Reason Pt 2
#5 of Battle For Humanity
Friday! Just like I promised!
4/29/2018: Just running through and taking care of some little grammatical errors. I want the story to be as seamless as possible and it can't when certain words are spelled wrong.
Three days. That was all Jeeve had, and now that time was gone. The scholar watched forlornly as Jason's bruised and bloody body was taken off the football field. Jeeve shook his head and made his way back inside, ignoring Amanda's calling voice.
"Hey Jeeve! Wait up!" But he didn't wait up, in fact he sped up, turning and twisting through the halls as he darted past his peers. The scholar rolled up to his locker and began sifting through it, pulling out folder after folder.
"Whew! Finally caught you J! What's wrong? You've been avoiding me all day!" Javari sighed and turned replying.
"Have I now? Guess I didn't hear you." Amanda lovingly grabbed his arm and said.
"What's wrong? Is this about Jason?"
"Oh I don't know, maybe it is?! We just watched someone get brutally mauled! I'm trying my best not to throw up right now! How are you so calm about this!?"
"You need a calm and level head if you're gonna to go through this life."
"That or you have nothing to worry about . . ." Jeeve whispered while turning and grabbing what he was after.
"What's that?"
"It's a shirt. Check it out." Amanda traced the words on the shirt in disbelief saying. "Property of Dahlia Delgado? You can't be serious!"
"What? Not a good color?"
"Why are you pre-marking yourself!? I thought you were figuring out the formula!"
"Well you thought wrong."
"So you're just quitting!? You're giving up on us?!"
"Yes I'm giving up. Fighting the system doesn't solve anything!"
"How can you say that!? You started this thing, so you have to finish it!" Jeeve grabbed Amanda by her shoulders and pushed her into his locker saying.
"Listen close and listen good. I'm done you here? Fighting brings nothing but pain and suffering, you saw what happened to Jason when he tried to fight . . . Broke him in more ways than one. What good does repellent do? How long before we're found out and forced to comply? Why fight it Amanda!? Tell me why fight?! Dahlia's better than I could ask for, so why fight it?"
"For others Javari. For others! You may be resigned to your fate, but some of us are still holding onto hope! I believed when you said you could do this! Shifty believed! Amy believed! Why can't you?"
Jeeve sighed and released her saying.
"I can't believe because there's nothing to believe in . . . Yesterday night I watched my mother take her last breath and it was right then when I learned something . . . The world doesn't change Amanda. Whatever fantasies you had about us rising up and taking back our rightful place are just that . . . fantasies."
"So because your mom dies and things get hard you quit!? That's bullshit and you know it!"
"Hmph! Well if this is all such bullshit, then you're more than welcome to figure this out by yourself! I said I'm through!" Amanda reached out for Jeeve's arm, but stopped at the sound of Dahlia's voice.
"Hey love I-" Dahlia's eyes darted suspiciously between the two before she asked.
"Is everything alright Jeeve?" The scholar glared at Amanda then walked past her saying. "It's fine . . . See you in class." Dahlia watched as he her soon to be mate left, then turned to Amanda and scowled saying.
"I don't know what went on between you two, but for your sake it better not happen again."
"Jealous?"
"Of you? Hardly. I just hate seeing my mate upset."
"That's funny, you call him your mate as if you've already claimed him." Dahlia growled at her tone, but kept her claws to herself.
"Of course he's mine! I've already scent marked him."
"He's a male Dahlia. Males like him have needs."
"I'm well aware of that! I don't need you to tell me about something you'll never experience."
"Oh maybe I wasn't clear . . . He's a human male. He's going to have desires you'll never be able to satiate. He longs to be with a member of his own species . . . All humans do." Dahlia quickly brought her paw towards Amanda, smashing the locker next to her saying.
"He's mine! I've waited long enough to claim him for myself and I refuse to have that messed up for me by you!" Amanda pushed a few loose strands of her hair out the way and smiled. The human picked up her discarded backpack and made her way towards class, but not before glancing over her shoulder and saying.
"That's what I thought. You don't love him, he's just property to you. Deep down he knows this too. It's so obvious you don't truly love him, and you're only interested in him because he's of a rare breed. The truth always surfaces Dahlia . . . Always." The delphox watched as Amanda strode happily through the halls, probably patting herself on the back for her retort.
"Hmm. I'll show you! I love him much more than you could ever imagine!
"Psst! Psst! Jeeve!" Javari groaned silently as his best friend tried getting his attention. The class was taking a test, but it seemed like that mattered not to the lucario. Ricardo crumpled up a few wads of paper and threw them at him whispering.
"Hey man! What's the answer to number five?"
"Didn't you study last night Mr. Salutatorian?"
"I couldn't be bothered! I got caught up in this serious match of Pokemon and Dungeons."
"Ugh fine! It's letter C."
"Thanks man! Hey uh what's six?" Jeeve shook his head and ignored him, opting to focus on his test rather than Ricardo's. The human breezed through the exam, bubbling in answer after answer. Once he was finished he wasted no time going up to Ms. Rosa's desk, and handed in his test. The female gardevoir peeked over her book and smiled saying.
"Ah if it isn't my prize pupil Jeeve. I take it you've flew through another one of my exams?"
"What can I say? I try my best."
"Mmm best indeed. Now it's come to my attention that you're 18th birthday is right around the corner." Jeeve gulped nervously and looked back towards Dahlia. The delphox's muzzled was buried deep in her test, leaving Jeeve to fend off his teacher.
"Yea totally forgot about that . . . Well don't worry about me now. I can take care of myself."
"Of course you can Javari. Someone as smart as you doesn't need to be watched like some pet." The scholar got an uneasy feeling in his gut, but he ignored it and replied.
"Yea I guess . . ."
"But even intellectuals are not immune to the laws of the land. I take it you've thought of who you'll be mated to?"
"I've given it some thought."
"Well look no further Javari. I've kept my eye on you for quite some time and I can definitely say you'd make an excellent mate." Jeeve nervously took a few steps back from her saying.
"Gee thanks? But I've already got someone else who'll be claiming me." Ms. Rosa's eyes casually fell on Dahlia, causing her to smile.
"Ah Ms. Delgado, a very sweet Delphox indeed. You two would make a wonderful couple." Her words were sweet but her voice laced with venom. Jeeve could practically choke on the foul air she was spewing and he had a feeling things were about to be much harder for his friend.
Javari walked back to his seat and plopped down frustrated. The death of his mother brought more confusion than it did answers. Before his last visit he had been positive creating the repellent was the right move, but now he wasn't so sure. Each side to the problem brought it's own pros and cons to the table, but Javari knew he didn't have time to dwell on it too much.
Time was running out for him and the others. After Jason's runaway plan was discovered he was prematurely put up for mating, which resulted in a bloody conflict. No pokemon could could come to terms on who would get to claim him so everyone literally fought over him. Jason got caught in the middle and was badly injured. Javari had never seen so much blood in his life and it made him queasy.
"At least he's safe . . ." Jeeve looked over to Shifty K's seat and sighed. No one had seen Shifty all day and it made Jeeve sad. He knew the Alolan had run off and it pained him to know that Shifty ran because of him.
"Are you going to keep feeling sorry for yourself?" The scholar turned around and smiled at Dahlia. The delphox smirked back but kept her head down in her test.
"A little risky to be communicating like this don't you think? Gardevoir's are psychic too."
"Nah you worry too much. Besides she's too busy pawing off to her book to pay attention to us. So what's the matter? It's hard to focus when you're literally broadcasting your distress."
"Sorry I guess I'm confused. I just don't know what to do anymore . . . Should I continue with the repellent or should I just be happy I get to be mated to you?" Dahlia went silent for a second, mulling over Jeeve's confession before she replied.
"Well as sappy as it sounds you should follow your heart Love. I know you have a tough choice to make, but you know I'm always here for you."
"I guess you're right."
"Of course I am! Now when are we going to find your father?"
"I already found him. I just don't know if I want to see him."
"What?! Why not!? He's your dad!"
"That's just it he's my dad . . . My dad I haven't seen in 12 years. Imagine missing your father for 12 years, then all of sudden you know where he's at. Would you just run back to him with open arms?"
_"Well I don't know about open arms, but I do know you should go see him. Even if you don't end up with the answers you want. You need this for closure Love." _
"Thanks Dahlia, you always know what to say."
"I try you know? Now where is your dad?"
"He's in the Northern side of Anistar city. I'm glad he's here in Kalos, but it makes me wonder why he never tried to reach out to me or mom."
"Maybe he didn't know you two were here?"
"Or maybe he did and he was scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Scared of what we had been reduced to . . ."
The car glided on the winding road, rolling smoothly around the mountainous expanse. Dahlia smiled happily as Jeeve drove them through the region. She had been meaning to take a vacation with him earlier, but with school and his family issues it was never feasible.
She looked over and sighed dreamily at him. The scholar threw her a passing glance and said.
"Someone seems a bit flustered."
"Not flustered, just in love."
"Ooh feel bad for whoever that is."
"Har har. You won't be making jokes when your birthday gets here."
"You know I've been thinking . . . Maybe we should mate before then." Dahlia placed her paw across her chest frightened. She frantically felt around until she felt the familiar thump of her heart. The delphox exhaled in relief then smiled saying.
"Y-You really mean that?"
"Yea well it's been a few days and everyone and their grandma wants to get in my pants. I think you and I should just go through with it. I'm like only what? Four days away from being 18 anyway."
"Wow is this the same human from last week? You'd really let me take you before time?"
"Why stall? Everyone's just waiting for you to make some kind of mistake so they can move in. I love you, but my love will be useless when I'm mated to someone else."
Dahlia nodded in agreement then leaned into Jeeve contently. The delphox couldn't be happier. She had connected with the love of her life, had his permission to take him early, and was even travelling the countryside with him. Life couldn't be better for her.
"You've made me the happiest delphox in Kalos."
"Well it's the least I could do after being friends with me for so long . . ."
"What's wrong? You don't sound happy."
"I'm happy to see you, my father? Not so much. We're already in Anistar and the GPS says he's a few blocks down." Dahlia sat up and rubbed her eyes. The delphox looked around the modern town in awe. She had never been outside of Lumiose and the sight of another town was almost too much to take in. Jeeve rolled down the streets ignoring the stares and pointing as he pulled into an empty driveway.
"We're here already?"
"Yep. The HumaDex said he lived here . . ." Dahlia placed her paw on his hand and smiled warmly.
"I get you're nervous, but you can't prejudge someone you haven't met! Give your father a chance before you come to any conclusions okay?" Jeeve nodded then stepped out the car saying.
"I'm not going to judge him, but it's gonna be pretty tough explaining why he's been gone for over a decade." Dahlia nodded knowingly and led Jeeve to the door. She nudged him on a little, leaving him to knock on the door. Jeeve grimaced, but knocked on the door anyway, hoping no one would answer it. It seemed like an eternity went by before they heard a voice, and Jeeve was positive it wasn't his father's.
The voice had a sweet pitch to it letting Jeeve knowing it was certainly female. The mystery girl on the other side cheerily answered "Who is it?"
"Hey I'm looking for someone who lives here. His name is Jethro Javari, does he live here?" Javari received no answer and instead the girl opened the door, causing Jeeve's jaw to drop. She was a stunning lopunny adorned in a cute pink tank top and probably the shortest shorts Jeeve had every seen. Her smile was rich and inviting much like honey.
The scholar was lost in her gaze and it seemed like he didn't want to be found.
"Why aren't you the cutest thing I've ever seen! Now who would leave such a lovely human unmarked out here?" The lopunny reached out and stroked Jeeve like on would stroke a dog. The scholar let out a low rumble and leaned into her touch, lost in bliss. Dahlia huffed and separated the two saying.
"Sorry we must've gotten the wrong address. Apologies for bothering you Ms?"
"Jessica and it's no bother at all! I really love this little guy! What's his name?" Dahlia looked at Jeeve and scowled at his loving gaze, but then directed her anger at Jessica once she saw the pinkish glaze over his eyes.
"I'd suggest you break the charm off my mate before I break you." Jessica giggled girlishly then said.
"Sorry! I get carried away sometimes, here you go." Jeeve groaned and shook his head as he brushed himself off.
"Ugh . . . I have the worst headache right now. Did we find Jethro?"
"Oh you're looking for my Jethy? He's in the garage, did you kids need something?"
"Yea I need to find my father. We've got some news to deliver to him."
"Father?" Jessica squinted her eyes then covered her mouth in shock exclaiming.
"OH MY ARCEUS! Jethro never told me he had a son! I shoud've known too, you look just like him! Come inside, he'll be so happy to see you guys!" Jessica ushered them inside taking the liberty to explain how she and Jethro met.
"I had just graduated from college when my father gave him to me as a gift. He said I deserved the best and he couldn't have been more right! Jethro is an amazing mate, I really couldn't ask for more . . . Well maybe expect this little morsel." Jessica flashed Jeeve a playful grin, much to Dahlia's annoyance.
The trio arrived at the garage door and Jessica said. "Just go right in, he's probably tinkering around with one his toys. Holler if you need me okay? Especially you . . ." The lopunny ran her paw sensually across his cheek then turned and left.
"S-She's wonderful . . ." Dahlia huffed and opened the garage door, stepping past him into the dark room. Jeeve shrugged and followed her down the stairs, all the while keeping his eyes focused on the figure hunched over a table. The couple carefully stalked around the figure until they were directly behind it.
Jeeve took a deep breath in and opened his mouth to speak, but the figure beat him to it.
"Jeeve Javari and Dahlia Delgado . . . You're here later than I expected."
"Later? What who are you?!" The figure turned around causing Dahlia to gasp. The figure looked exactly like Jeeve in just about every way possible. For Jeeve it was akin to looking in a mirror.
"D-Dad!?"
"In the flesh son . . ." Jeeve's father held out his arms and smiled as his son plowed into him, wrapping his arms around his waist.
"Where have you been all these years!?"
"Same place as you . . . Here take a seat. I feel like we've got a lot of catching up to do." The couple took their seats and watched as Jethro pulled out a small envelope.
"Do you know what this is son?"
"An envelope?"
"Well yes, but more importantly it's your mother's last few notes . . . Your mother and I always made a promise that whenever we died, we'd pass on the last of our works to you . . . Judging by your necklace I can see your mother's no longer with us."
"Y-Yea i-it happened yesterday . . . I'd never cried so much in my life."
"What'd you cry for?"
"She died! I watched her take her last breath!"
"Good for her."
"Excuse me? Are you happy mom died?!"
"Of course I am! Why aren't you?" Jeeve balled his hand into a fist, but was calmed by Dahlia. He was starting to wonder if coming here was a good idea at all.
"Why wouldn't you be upset?! You loved her!"
"I still do, but she's got it easy. Your mother no longer has to worry, stress, or fret over anything ever again. She's in a place where filthy pokemon can no longer hurt her . . . I envy her." Jeeve pondered on what Jethro said and nodded in agreement replying.
"Well I didn't come here to mourn. I came because I need your advice . . ."
"Lay it on me kid."
"Where do I go from here? I've been using the last of mom's research to try and develop a pokemon repellent, something that could block the pheromones we release you know? I want to help people, but I also don't want to hurt pokemon either . . ."
"You remind me of her so much. She was the same way, always wanting to help others before her self. You get your virtues from her, but your raw intellect? Something tells me that's where I come in . . ."
"Okay? Well what am I supposed to do then?" Jethro cracked a wide smile then leaned back and said.
"Nothing. Just sit back and enjoy the show."
Dahlia and Jeeve exchanged worried looks before she asked.
"What show?" Jethro looked at her then slapped the back of his head embarrassed
"Where are my manners? Apologies young one, but this may be hard to hear. Son you know the cure for the pokeflu your mother developed?"
"Yea I did a report on her and the cure about a week ago."
"Well as you know we both worked on the cure, but that didn't mean we both agreed on using it. You mother was pro pokemon and I was on the opposite team. I told her using the cure would only lead to a worse fate for humans. When the pokemon population reached an all time low, humans had to step in and pick up the slack, leading to laws that let us drive, own houses, and even run for local offices . . . But I knew as soon as the population was well again, we'd be relegated back to second class citizens! And what happened son?"
"Things went back to the way they were huh?"
"Of course! I knew things would only get worse as time went on, so I added a little safety measure." Jeeve raised his eyebrow and asked.
"What safety measure?"
"Well I don't know what Stella told you, but the cure is actually a long term poison. It kills the virus, but subsequently kills the host body. The poison has laid dormant for years, but now it's time . . ."
"Y-You poisoned people!?"
"Pokemon are not people son! You of all should know this! You go to school being harassed everyday don't you? You have to face the pressure of knowing you'll be mated off to someone you barely know and forced to carry out their every whim!"
Jeeve shot up from his chair and pointed accusingly saying. "You're insane! Once that poison kicks in, you just might kill off the entire pokemon population! Why would you do this!?"
"I'm doing this for us son! I'm doing it for humans everywhere! No longer will we be slave to them! Aren't you happy son?!"
"Happy!? I have friends who are pokemon! The love of my life is pokemon! You can't kill her!"
"I'm sorry but you can't stop what's been set into motion. You'll thank me when you'll be able to sleep with your own kind."
Jeeve quickly grabbed Dahlia's paw and pulled her close saying.
"I have mom's notes! I can synthesize a cure just like snapping my fingers!"
"Then go ahead son, but take into account that pokemon are already dying . . ." Jeeve opened his mouth to retort but stopped at the sound of something crashing.
"Dear oh me . . . I think Jessica's a little under the weather." Jeeve and Dahlia exchanged horrified looks and dashed up the stairs towards where Jessica was. The two barreled into the kitchen then stood petrified as they saw her. The lopunny laid face down in a pool of her own blood. Jeeve knelt down and gently turned her over pulling out a sharp knife that had found itself lodged in her side.
Jeeve felt around her neck and forehead then sighed in relief saying.
"She's not dead . . . Yet. She's got a bad fever and chills. Looks like she was cooking when she passed out from the flu . . . Flu! Dahlia get out of here now!" The delphox jumped at his loud voice and scurried out the house towards the car. Javari tore off some fabric from her shirt and fashioned a crude tourniquet. The scholar looked over to see his father standing in the doorway casually.
"You're gonna pay for this you know?"
"Yea I guess you're right, but you'd have to choose me over everyone else. You've only got a couple of days to engineer a solution, are you positive you want to waste time on little old me?"
Jeeve balled his fists in anger and made his way towards the phone saying.
"I'm calling the cops right now! You need to be taken in before you hurt anyone else!"
"I would worry about getting your little friend home first. Depending on how long she was here, she might already have the flu . . ." Jeeve hands trembled as he held onto the phone. The scholar knew he had no choice but to back off and take care of Dahlia first.
Jeeve looked off at the lopunny and said. "What're you going to do with her?"
"Don't worry son. I'll take good care of her, now you run along and look after your friend. I'm sure she's dying to get back home." Javari cursed and ran back to his car. He was in a race against time and every second he wasted was another life taken.
