Part 1
The hard, smooth skin of a baseball made a loud popping noise as it fell into a well broken-in leather glove. The well groomed digits of an Australian shepherd removed the ball, tossing it back into the glove again a short moment later. Mostly white, with splatter marks of brown that almost seemed to match the old glove, the Aussie sighed deeply as he watched an antique clock above the fireplace tick seconds away. It was only 7:00 in the morning, and his parents were both off at work already.
Collin had never considered himself much of a morning person, and this was especially the case for Monday mornings. He was envious of his parents, in that respect. Both of them were up a 5:00 in the morning every day, and ready to be out the door before Collin was even mobile. Most days, Collin's father made a lot of noise while leaving the house. This had been one of those days.
Groggily, the Aussie toyed with the leather bands that held his favorite glove together. He was hungry, but knew better than to look for anything appetizing in the fridge; his parents were health nuts. He tried one more time to wipe the sleep from his eyes in an effort that was futile at best. He yawned, stretched, and almost considered going back to bed. At that moment, however, there was a loud knocking at the back door.
Collin jumped to his feet, startled. "What?" he shouted at the curtain-covered glass door. The silhouette of a horse was caste on the curtains by the morning sun.
"Collin!" came the reply. "It's Benjamin! Open up!"
Collin sniffed in the direction of the door for a moment. "Yeah, I know it's you, Ben." Collin replied as he pulled back the curtain. "Why are you here so early?" Collin pulled the sliding glass door open, allowing the young horse into his home.
"School starts in an hour." Ben replied.
Ben's whole body was almost entirely rust-red, except for a large splotch of white in the small of his back. The mustang's mane and tail were both naturally jet-black. He had been friends with Collin since kindergarten.
"Yeah, I know it does." Collin replied, having closed and locked the back door. "And you usually don't come over until it's time to go."
Ben blew air through his nostrils, glaring intensely across Collin's backyard to his own house. "Dad's in one of those moods of his." Ben required quietly. Ben's father was somewhat aggressive for an equine, and could become tiresome when he was under stress. Collin's own father was not so different. "Just couldn't stand being around him right now, so I came over early."
Collin nodded, sighing, "not like you were interrupting anything." The Aussie passed his friend, who'd chosen to stand to the side of the living room, and placed his baseball glove on top of the kitchen counter. "You get a chance to eat?" He asked the mustang.
"Nope." Ben replied simply, in a manner typical of his personality.
"Well don't just stand there. Help yourself to something." the canine replied with a slight smile.
Ben nodded, and stepped into the open kitchen. After rummaging about for a moment, he pulled out plain wheat crackers, and began munching away. Collin stared for a long moment before making a gagging noise.
"What was that for?" Ben asked through a full mouth.
"How can you eat that garbage?" Collin jested. "I never understood horse diets."
This had been an ongoing joke of theirs since childhood. Collin, as a puppy, had simply assumed that all people were omnivorous, like his family. Ben had been his first non-carnivore friend.
"Try it. You'll love it." Ben replied, swallowing.
"About as much as I'd love ripping out my front teeth." Collin smiled.
He happened to look at Ben's clothes at that moment; wrinkled pants and a torn shirt. "Did you not get the chance to dress as you were fleeing your house this morning?"
Ben chuckled, "pretty much." Ben studied his friend, "have you even bothered to dress today?"
Collin was in a sleeveless undershirt and plaid pajama pants. "I didn't plan on getting dressed until it was almost time to leave," the dog admitted as he toyed with an ear. "May as well get dressed now." He sighed as he began walking toward his room. Over his shoulder, Collin called "You're welcome to borrow something."
Ben looked at his filthy clothes, and nodded inwardly. He was only slightly taller than Collin, as fortune would have it. This wouldn't be true for too much longer, as horses always outgrew dogs by a considerable amount. Ben's hooves clopped loudly on the tile floor as he stepped out of the kitchen, and into the main entry way. He made his way up a small flight of stairs, and stepped through a hallway to reach Collin's room.
The canine was pulling off his pants when he looked back at Ben, then continued. Being friends for as long as they'd been, nothing was really all that weird between them. They'd gone skinny dipping at parties, been naked together in locker rooms and rec center showers, and one time Collin had even walked in on Ben masturbating. Nude meant very little after something like that.
Ben's throat lumped up as he looked at his friend's turned backside. Collin was fairly well built. He'd never played on any actual teams before, but he was obsessed with baseball. His body had been built up over time from all of the time Collin spent on the diamond. Ben took a deep breath, dog odor filling his sensitive nostrils.
Some time during freshman year, Ben had discovered within himself a sexual preference for men. The funny thing was that Ben didn't have feelings for Collin. He'd even tried to have a thing for Collin at one time. Collin had a good looking set of legs, not to mention a baseball player's ass. By all means, Ben should have been going balls-over-fire for Collin. However, much as he loved Collin, it was a brotherly love.
"What do you want?" Collin asked. "Jeans and a button-up?"
"Just jeans and a tee-shirt." Ben replied simply, looking around the messy room. Posters of baseball players and girls in bikinis covered most of the white walls. Collin was a man whore. When he wasn't thinking about girls, he was thinking about baseball. The only problem for Ben was that Collin openly hated gays. Being such, Ben had never openly 'come out of the closet'. His friendship with Collin simply meant too much, and Ben feared Collin's reaction.
Collin tossed his friend some clothes, then began rummaging about for something to wear. Ben threw on his own clothes, and waited for Collin. The canine threw dirty laundry about, occasionally sniffing a shirt or a pair of pants to see if it was clean. It took the better part of three minutes.
School was only a few blocks away from where Collin and Ben lived; well within walking distance. The time in the morning air gave Collin time to clear his head before the stresses of high school.
God knows I need stress relief today, Collin thought smugly.
"So you finally got a date with that coyote girl, I hear." Ben said as his hooves clopped on the sidewalk.
Collin smiled and rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah. I've been with her for a few days now, and I'm already hating the relationship." Collin looked up to the sky. "The chick is crazy, I'm telling you. On our date Saturday, she actually proposed we go for 'a swim' in Cherry Creek Lake! Told her 'not a chance,' but when I show up, she's already in the water." Collin shook his head. "That shit's filthy."
"Man whore like you turning down sex?" Ben asked. "What did you do?"
"I began by pointing out the fact that the lake is ten feet deep, and you cant even see the bottom when you're standing at shoreline." Collin said as he rummaged about in his lunch bag. "Then I told her that I was leaving, and she was welcome to join me." There was a moment of silence. Collin looked up to see his rust-colored friend simply staring at him.
"That's it?" Ben asked with a horse-snort. "No 'hot sex', no blowjobs, nothing?"
Collin ran his tongue over his front incisors. "Well if you must know, she still had all of that pond water on her, so I helped her shower it off."
Ben rolled his eyes. "Sorry I asked. That lovely image is going to be stuck in my head for days."
Collin and Ben were well-known at school. They shared everything with each other. There were times where their respective parents even forgot that the two were not, in actuality, related. The two families were very close, going to the same Sunday church, sharing the same taste in restaurants, even enjoying the same programs. It was a lucky break for Collin and Ben, who rarely parted ways except for school and dating.
Collin shuffled through his locker, which was decorated in much the same manner as his room. "Hey, Collin!" someone called.
The Aussie looked over his shoulder to see Liba. She was just less than a foot shorter than Collin, and already full-grown. She was an average height for a house cat. All black with deep green eyes, Liba attracted a number of guys around school, most of whom she ignored. To Collin, Liba was just a friend. She'd only just transferred schools, so he hadn't known her for very long.
"Hey there, Kitty." replied neutrally, returning to his locker. "What can I do you for?"
"I was just wandering if you were going to the game this weekend. We're taking on that Lutheran school from down the street!" Liba was a big fan of her new school, apparently having had some bad experiences at her last one.
"Actually, I had been planning on going to the batting cages this weekend." Collin replied truthfully.
Liba purred. "Nonsense! I'll save you a seat."
Collin looked into her deep eyes, and snuffed a shutter when the cats pupils focused into slits. "May as well save me one too!" Ben said, smiling. He'd somehow managed to appear from the other side of Collin's locker door.
Liba's eyes lost their grip on Collin's as she looked up at the rust-colored mustang. "Sure!" she gleefully replied after a moment. "I could do that." The house cat's tail twitched slightly as she slid away into the crowd.
"I don't understand cats." Collin said, shaking his head.
"Maybe that's cause you're a dog?" Ben suggested. Collin growled inwardly.
There was a short moment of silence, filled with the ringing of a school bell, and the movement of hundreds of people making their way for the next hour of classes. Collin and Ben made their way for history in silence. "So," Ben looked at Collin as they entered the large room, "we going to the game this weekend?"
Collin shrugged. "Yeah, why not?"
They chose to walk to the game, rather than drive. School was only two miles away, and the day was a perfect sixty-nine degrees with no clouds in the sky. Even though the baseball diamond would be crowded by pull-out bleachers, and the track was being employed by the game, both Collin and Ben had brought their gear. Collin's baseball bat clanked loudly on every Mail box post that passed.
"Too good of a day to waste." Collin had explained. "As soon as the football fanclub leaves, that diamond is mine!"
The funny thing about Collin was that he wasn't actually part of the high school team. Both coaches had approached him every week since sophomore year, literally begging him to join the team, but he always refused. The reason, Ben knew, was that Collin was afraid. Collin's early life was plagued by failure and rejection. Until he discovered baseball, Collin had been a regular old video game nerd. Even today, Collin loved a good game more than sex with a cheerleader, though the cheerleader usually took priority in his agenda.
Liba was standing at the cement and cinder block gate, admittance tickets in hand. Her tail was sweeping slowly behind her. "I was beginning to wonder if you were going to show up." she purred.
"Considered it." Collin admitted, but in a joking tone. "Figured I'd head over to the baseball diamond after the game."
"He wouldn't be here, except that he broke up with the coyote girl." Ben said plainly. Liba's pupils seemed to refocus, and her tail became rigid for a split second before continuing it's slow swing.
"In other words, you think she's going to kill you?" Liba asked.
"No." Collin shook his head, smiling. "That would be too quick. She wants to skin me and leave me in the sun to dry."
"Pleasant." Liba replied, monotone. "Look, I've got seats for three up front." she finally announced.
"Seriously?" Collin gasped. "You must have been here since six in the morning to get those!"
Liba shrugged. "It was worth it." she said with a faint smile.
"C'mon!" Collin exclaimed. "Let's not miss another second!"
Liba and Ben watched as Collin ran for the seats, hardly stopping for a canned Coke on the way down. Ben looked at Liba, saying simply, "Hints don't land well with him."
Liba nodded. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Try using a mega phone and small words next time you're hitting on him." Ben laughed.
Collin was already at his seat by the time Ben was at the top of the stadium's stairs. Ben paused briefly to look at the field. Football players crowded the sides and at the fifty yard line, defense and offense squared off, eye to eye. That's when Ben spotted the one anthro he'd been dieing to see, and the one person in the world he'd die to avoid.
The mule deer buck's name was Charles. He was a transfer from some school out in California and irony aside, he was the definition of stud. Ben was a full-back who was used frequently as a running back because of how well he played both positions. In speed, the buck was unmatched, despite his muscular build. Ben did his best to ignore the knots in his stomach as he joined Collin.
"Tie game, and only one quarter left to go!" Collin explained. "This was damn-well worth the walk, even if I don't get the diamond!"
Collin watched wild eyed as the two teams lined up for their next play. Collin, for his lack of athleticism, was never lacking enthusiasm. So, when the team almost fumbled the ball, Collin yelled, "Hey, QB! Use your eyes next time!"
The quarterback must have heard Collin, because he paused long enough to glare down the audience before calling a team huddle for the next play.
"Collin, sit down. You're making an idiot of yourself." Ben demanded.
Collin pulled at one of his ears, and took his seat. "If the field-fagot knew how to play his own game, we could have gotten some decent yardage there. This late in the game, he cant afford to be an idiot like that."
"Dude, it's just a game." Ben replied, ignoring the fag comment. Collin didn't know any better. "You don't even like football!"
Collin blinked. "Sorry." he said after a moment. "I get carried away. It's because I've been cooped up in the house since last weekend."
"You get like that, I know." Ben replied, nodding.
Liba simply purred in her seat.
After the game was over, the audience of fans, students and family was quick to depart, leaving only the home team, Collin and Ben, and a few select others behind. A huge, black paw suddenly landed on Collin's shoulder.
The Australian Shepherd's eyes went hollow as he looked up, and relief washed over him very visibly as he saw the baseball coach, a very well built black panther with a deep voice and the eyes of a predator.
"Thank Christ, I thought you were an angry dad or something!" he exclaimed.
"Or a pissed off coyote?" Liba smiled.
The coach laughed. "Never mind that, Collin. I see you got your gear. You off to practice?"
"Yessir. My swing is a tad rusty, so I thought I'd give her some attention." Collin replied, rubbing his forearm.
"Well if you're batting, you'll need a pitcher." the coach replied. "Unless your friend here planned on...?"
"Me? Nah. I've got some personal issues to work out." Ben said politely.
"In that case?" the coach looked over to Collin, who shrugged.
"Eh, why not. I wouldn't mind a fastball or two if you can manage." Collin tossed his sports bag over one shoulder, and walked off, leaving Ben with his thoughts. The football team stayed in their huddle for several more minutes before finally breaking off for the showers. Ben walked as fast as he could to catch up with Charles.
"Yo, Charlie! Wait up!" Ben called. The buck paused to look over to Ben, and promptly excused himself from the team.
"Benjamin! I didn't know you were here today! I'd have made a better show for you!" he exclaimed.
"I'd prefer you didn't." Ben admitted.
Charles became distant, and nodded. "So, anyway, what's up?"
Ben flushed under his rusty fur, and he had to resist the temptation to rub his arm. "Look, I just want to talk about what happened between you and me..."
"Damn. I knew you didn't like me. I shouldn't have said anything. I'm such a fucking idiot." Charlie began ranting.
"No! Nothing like that!" Ben exclaimed. "I was going to say that I loved it!" Charlie piped-up and got one of those deer-in-headlight looks. Ben continued, "i was actually going to ask if you'd be up for round two, and maybe some coffee afterward. I've been thinking a lot about you, and I think you may be something more than accidental sex." Ben giggled.
"I...I don't know what to say."
"Then say yes?"
Charlie rubbed one of the shortened points on his head. Antlers were forbidden in any sport because of the risk they held. "On two conditions." the buck said, nodding. "One, you buy the coffee, and two, this time I catch."
Ben's shaft twitched violently. "Deal. When are you free?"
Collin watched as the coach, Drew, wound up for another pitch. He'd thrown two sliders and a fastball in the past three pitches. Collin's keen eye naturally began looking for signs of a trick. A curve-ball would be the most likely.
Drew pitched, and Collin withheld his swing. Sure enough, the ball, seemingly at the last second, flew off to the side and crashed against the cage. "Well played!" Drew called. "Thought I'd get you with that one!"
"Thank you!" Collin replied simply. He stepped off of the plate to grab a quick swig of water, and noticed several of the football players approaching.
"Hey!" one of them called in a friendly manner. "Looks like a pretty sad game you got going there!"
"Just some batting practice." Collin explained as the players joined him at home plate.
"Well, we didn't get too much action on the field today," the same player, a puma of medium build began, "so we were hoping to maybe get some time on the diamond, if you're up for it?"
"Well," Collin looked at Coach Drew, who had joined the small group, "We don't have enough people here for a full game, but enough for a few batters and field men."
"Why don't you guys take turns batting, and I'll just pitch?" Coach suggested.
"Damn. Works for me." Collin smiled, for some reason realizing that the only other canine present was a scrawny-looking German shepherd.
"Alright!" the puma exclaimed. "Let's play!"
Collin noted for a moment that Benjamin had vanished. This struck Collin as strange, but then again, the equine had been acting very...off balance lately. It seemed as thought he had been lost, or in a daze, but when ever Collin had mentioned the behavior, his rust-colored friend snapped back to his regular self and refused to talk.
Collin shrugged off his friend's absence, and returned to the game that was forming at hand.
"Showers afterward for me." Collin stated momentarily. "I've already worked up a sweat from batting today."
Collin and the players made their way for the locker room. Most of them had left their equipment, and a number wanted to shower before heading on out. Collin, for his part, was in bad need of a shower.
"Hey, puppy." one of the players called to Collin. "You've got a hell of a swing, there! Why haven't you joined the team? You'd be the best!"
Collin smiled, and rubbed the back of his head. "Well, truth be told I'm not a big fan of weight training or daily practice. Baseball is something I'm just good at, I guess."
"That's a pity." the German shepherd said, joining the conversation. "Our ball team is in some serious need of help."
"I'll keep that in mind." Collin replied.
"Anyway, I hear you're dating that coyote girl in the junior class? That true?" the puma asked.
"Used to be." The Australian Shepherd replied, making a gag noise. "I've dated a fair number of girls in my time, but she's the oddest." he replied at they reached the door to the locker room. It was locked.
"There's another way in. follow me." the puma said before continuing the conversation. "Why I ask is there's a couple of girls I happen to know have a thing for you. I was just trying to figure out if you were open."
"No shit?" Collin's nub-tail began wagging. "Like who?"
"Katherine Gee, Robin Elli, 'Tanner' Trotter, and a few others." the puma smiled over his shoulder.
"Tanner? Tanner the merle Collie?" Collin replied, startled.
"Yup. I have no idea why, myself, but you're actually a big-ass hit with the ladies." the puma laughed.
"May have something to do with that swing of yours." the German shepherd cut in. "Ladies love a sexy set of arms!" he laughed.
"Damn! Tell me she's single!" Collin barked.
"When she hears you're interested, she will be." the German shepherd smiled.
"Wha-? Who's she with right now?" Collin asked. He loved sex and a pretty face, but not if it was going to break some other guy's heart.
"Eh, some kid in Senior class who fucks his own picture more than her. He's the guy in senior class who plays second-string in JV football." The puma replied. "Word has it she's been looking for any excuse to get herself out of that relationship." the puma finished, just as they reached the locker room.
It was a mess, as though someone had cleared out in a hurry. Collin ignored the thought, and undressed his sweaty clothes and headed for the shower, leaving his equipment on a bench.
