The guard in the Lobby of Stefan's building stared at Magdalene as we crossed it. I wondered if he would have commented on me bringing a woman up the condo, if he hadn't been dumb stuck.

I didn't know what he thought me and Stefan were, I knew I wasn't the only guy the collie brought home, he was Society after all, but I might be the only one with a keycard.

Until his promotion Stefan didn't travel, since then, that was all he did. I the last three months I doubted he'd been home more than a handful of days.

The card unlocked the elevator, and I looked my sister over. She was six two, wide shouldered like dad, not overly muscular. She had mom's ears and her deep brown eyes.

Magdee looked at me. "What?"

"Just trying to decide if it's the lack of braces that turned you into such a looker."

"I'm not a looker."

"That guard would disagree. I'm pretty sure he was drooling." The elevator dinged and the door opened.

Stefan's condo was on the fifteenth floor of a twenty five floor complex. It was well maintained, as it should be considering ho expensive it was living in one of them. His unit was a corner one, for the extra light.

I opened the door and waved Magdalene in. She took a step, and gasped.

"This is beautiful."

"I thought you'd like it." I slipped past her. For all intent ad purposes, Stefan's condo was green. The walls were actually brown, but he had plants everywhere, on hangers, on shelves, on the counter. He had all kind of species. Stefan had given up telling me what each of them were. I just couldn't keep them straight. They were the reason I had a keycard.

Magdalene walked around the living room, lightly touching

each plant before joining me in the kitchen. I was filling a pitcher with water.

"He named each plant?" she asked, looking at the geranium on the counter. It was in a clay pot with ferns painted on it. The name plaque read 'Helen'. They all had one.

Stefan had given me a list with all their requirements. I checked my phone, Helen was due for some extra nitrogen. I took a pellet out of the box in the cupboard and pushed it in the soil.

Magdee stopped me before I poured the water.

"Is there any filtered water? I can smell the chemical in that."

"So?"

She rolled her eyes. "Why don't you let me take care of them. You're bound to kill them the way you're going at it."

I relinquished the pitcher and sat at the counter.

"The guy who owns this place, who is he?" she asked, looking through the fridge.

"How do you know it's a guy?"

"Like you'd have the card to a woman's place."

"I have women friends."

"Really? Name one."

I couldn't. Alice had been the only woman I called friend.

The rest were coworkers, or mom. "Fine," I admitted. "So? Who is he."

"His name is Stefan, he's financial advisor. He got promoted over the Summer and now he's traveling all over the world going over the books of the company's offices."

"And you two are serious?" She pulled out a jug of water and closed the fridge.

"Serious?"

"He gave you a keycard."

"Oh. That's so I can water the plants. I'm already in one relationship, I don't want a second one."

She dug out the nitrogen pellet. "I never thought you'd get a boyfriend."

I smiled. "He didn't leave me much choice in the matter.

But I don't think Gods ever do." Understanding made her smile.

"How about you? You found someone? Or is your relationship with your God as intimate as mine is?"

"The Green One isn't what you'd call an involved God." She crumpled the pellet and sprinkled it over the soil. "He's like a comforting blanket. Always there to warm you, and let you know that you are cared for, but he doesn't ask for exclusivity, just that we also take care of his children."

She poured water, then turned to Jennifer, the plant next to the sink. I had no idea what it was, but in the middle of summer pretty yellow flowers had bloomed from it.

"I've had a few lovers. One of whom I though was serious,

but his affinity is flora and as much as I like plants, I couldn't get the intensity with which he relates to them. We broke up on good terms, I think."

I watched her go from one plant to the next, giving them varying amount of water, as well as nutrients. I didn't have to tell her which one needed what.

"Do you only date guys withing your Faction?"

"No, but if I'm going to be serious, it helps if they understand what is it I do."

"Does that mean your kid will be inducted automatically?"

"I don't know. I doubt it, we have to want to join. She could just be someone who will know about us without being part of it, an associate."

There was only a splash of water left in the jug when she put it back in the fridge. "Have you call the phone number?" "No. I don't want to give them any warning I'm coming."

She took out her phone. "Give it to me." I did. An she placed the call.

"Good afternoon," she said, after a moment, her voice so sultry I stared. "My name is Elizabeth, and I'm calling on behave of Sunders Survey. If you can call me back at your earliest opportunity It would be much appreciated, thank you."

She put her phone away. "The phone's owner is Milton Farmer."

The name meant nothing to me. I did a quick search, and I got a dozen M. Farmer in the greater Denver area. None with addresses in The Village.

"Do you think there's a chance I can talk to Stefan?" she asked while I was getting more information on the first Farmer on the list. A phone really wasn't the best tool for that.

"I don't see why not. I'll give you his number."

"Thanks. I think he'd made a good candidate for the Green

One."

I looked up. "He's Society."

"Really?" she looked at all the plants. "Are you sure?"

"We've had sex often enough that yes I'm sure." "Maybe I can convince him to join us."

"Can you do that? Switch allegiance?

"I don't see why not."

"How would that work? He'd have to renounce my God's existence?"

She shook her head. "He couldn't, your God is as real as mine, but I figure that if he starts performing our rituals instead of yours, the Gods would see where his allegiances are."

"And they'd just be okay with it? My God is a little possessive. I have trouble believing he'd let someone go just like that."

"What could he do? Gods only have influence over their Faction, if Stefan switched, he'd fall outside your God's influence. I guess He could have one of you go after him to exact revenge, but that'd be it."

I nodded, I sort of remembered a conversation like that with Max months ago. "Well, I don't think he'll want to switch.

Stefan loves the sex."

She smirked. "We have sex too."

I smirked back. "But can you have sex for two days in a row without stopping?"

"You're joking, right?"

"Hey, my God is one of Lust and Vitality, The more sex we have the better we feel. Once we get going, we don't have to stop unless we want to."

"I guess that if we were in the middle of a forest, it's energy could sustain us." She didn't sound all that sure.

I sent her Stefan's number. "While you think about that, I need to head back. Is this going to work out?"

"Are you kidding? It feel like I'm in a clearing. I haven't felt this relaxed since before I started on this job."

I handed her the keycard. "I'm going to let the guard know you're staying here, but until Stefan informs the security company directly, they might give you some trouble."

She gave me a beaming smile. "Don't worry about me, Spots,

I can handle the big back guard."

I turned to leave an stopped. "Magdee, Think about calling dad. Especially with what you do, the danger you put yourself in. I'd hate for something to happen to you before you had the chance to talk to him."

Her gaze hardened, and she didn't reply for a long moment.

"I'll think about it."

It was the best I could ask of her.
