A/N End

Silence bounced between me, Elder Einzel, and Xander. I was shocked beyond belief, their guffaws hinting at a similar reaction.

Nargacuga kept growling and I limped in front of his head, my body blocking them from his view.

"Don't-" Einzel started, but lost her voice when Nargacuga glanced around me and glared down at them. Xander was the first to initiate a conversation.

"I don't understand." His words were my exact thoughts. I looked at Nargacuga, then at Xander. Why was he alive, and why was Nargacuga growling over someone he had regretted attacking, or did this behavior have to do with Elder Einzel's debut?

"Xander, I thought you died," I admitted. Elder Einzel piped up, surprisingly cool-headed.

"Jay found Xander on his way back to the village, mere feet from its entrance. When Xander woke up, he thought you had brought him back home and left, or that..." She paused, pondering Nargacuga's current state of non-violence. I was surprised as well, though mostly relieved, and did not want to question it. It felt like progress, in terms of our emotions being mutually understood, as well as not killing people.

"But you're not." Xander skipped the "not dead" part that Elder Einzel failed to articulate. "I was right." He added, his energy picking up. Xander had wrappings around his torso with dried-up blood. Something about his recovery was off to me, and I found myself confused.

"You don't know that," spat Elder Einzel as he began hobbling forward. I could feel tense from Nargacuga's alert reaction, and immediately placed a hand under his chin. The action proved enough to ease the stress I was feeling. Our emotional exchange impacted Xander as if he had discovered the elixir of life.

"Man, you have a gift. This," Xander inhaled sharply, and I realized his energy had been a facade. My worry seeped into Nargacuga and promoted our attention to peruse his wounds. He stopped near us, then gestured with his hand, repeating himself.

"This, man. It's the blight but something happened. I don't know if you cleansed it, modified it, or what, but you can tame monsters!" As I deciphered his words, Narhacuga snarled at the word 'tame'. Xander seized up, his hands meekly guarding his wound.

My thoughts battled with Xander's words, and with previous mysteries that remained unanswered. I shook my head, holding my hands up as a means of slowing things down.

"That's not exactly correct..." I started, my voice stressed, but Elder Einzel interjected.

"You've somehow awoken your kinship stone! I've never seen an adult monster get tamed by a rider though." As she started up, I shook my head again.

I didn't tame him.

"Elder, you knew less than me and I at least had a hunch relatively related to understanding his condition!" Xander and Elder Einzel still did not seem to get along, though this left me wondering how long Xander had been without me. When I fainted while digging a grave, I must have passed out for a while.

"His condition is related to the stone and perfectly manageable by me and others in the village, your hunch was not needed..." as the two continued, I kept trying to interrupt, my voice not reaching their ears as I tried to clear up their wild banter.

"I didn't tame him." They weren't listening. Xander turned around, way too comfortable and trusting in my ability to keep Nargacuga from becoming startled. My heart began to beat quicker, my eyes looking pleadingly between the two as they began arguing over who knows what.

Before I could tell them to stop, Nargacuga roared. Xander almost fell on his ass, spinning around and stumbling back, and Elder Einzel looked ready to get down in prayer.

I for one thought Nargacuga was pissed and ready to attack them both, but my interpretation of his anger had been misplaced. As I looked down at him, my hand anxiously petting his chin to calm him down, his eyes awaited my gaze and I realized why he had roared.

He wanted me to speak and to calm down.

I hadn't realized how quickly my heart was beating, and the roar certainly had shut them up. As I stared into his eyes, I realized that this was the first time Nargacuga seemed to react to human speech.

"I didn't tame Nargacuga," I started, now knowing he did not like their use of that word. Silence urged me to continue.

"Listen, I don't understand everything that's happened but before Xander was at the village, he was here with me." I looked at Xander and continued. "You weren't breathing and had a spike from Nargacuga's tail poking out your ribs. I thought you died."

"But why didn't you?" Xander immediately responded, earning an agitated huff from Nargacuga that stiffened his posture.

"Because... he felt bad," I said, the words tasting weird as I said it and morphing my expression into one riddled with deep thought. This time, they waited for me to continue, and Nargacuga seemed approving of my words as I kept talking.

"Nargacuga killed your friends, and he did so as a monster would with any Hunter. He would have done the same with us, but were able to feel each other's emotions." I blinked a couple of times and reiterated.

"And not just emotions. We can feel each other's physical conditions, to some extent, and just now Nargacuga understood the word 'tamed' when you used it and held distaste for the term. So... I think my understanding of human speech is rubbed off on him, so long as I'm around to hear it?" Elder Einzel had a grave expression on her face. Xander had an expression I could only describe as one someone would have if they found out you told him you could fly, and then proved it.

"Man... that, that's amazing." Xander didn't seem to know where to begin. I thought he'd be somewhat upset over his friends but if such things plagued him, it was not apparent and probably something I would ask about later.

"You're a child." Elder Einzel weeped. Xander looked at her baffled. "I'm a young adult, and even though you have eighty years on me, I can tell clear as day that this is revolutionary! A human that can forge bonds with adult monsters?"

"And he shares the monster's pain. What of the lifespan of a Nargacuga, Xander? What of the fact that this creature, as put by him, is not 'tamed', but has merely bonded with one person? He can't be brought back to the village, especially with other Monsties in the area, do you know what that would spell?" For once, Xander seemed to take her thoughts into serious account, but he didn't let it stop him.

"Then we observe him. Maybe he can't come back..." Xander looked between me and Nargacuga as if wanting me to ask Narcaguga if I could bring him home. Based on Nargacuga's understanding of our exchange, that answer was clear: he would probably kill someone. "but we can gain this creature's trust. Nargacuga is smart, and he's developed an understanding of humans, surely both good and bad, that we're responsible for guiding him through, or rather you." Xander looked at me. Though I felt air seep into my lungs, I became light-headed.

"Wait, you want me to stay with Nargacuga?" Nargacuga looked at me as if that was an obvious predicament I was bound to earlier on, causing me to look at him in surprise.

"What do you mean we are sticking together?" I said in shock toward the beast.

"He's smarter than you think," Xander said, understanding something that I didn't, though arguably, I was becoming pissed over not understanding more than one thing.

"Dammit, just hold up a second." I held my hands up, eyeing everyone annoyedly. ** "** I'll ask Nargacuga why I should stay with him in a second" I eyed Xander warningly because I could tell he wanted me to elaborate on being able to speak to Nargacuga.

"Just shut up. Wait, okay?" I huffed, then jerked my head behind me and Nargacuga. "I've obviously been unconscious longer than I expected. Xander is alive and I guess Nargacuga brought you back to the village out of guilt, that much I've pieced together." I turned around and everyone stared in the direction of my head jerk, where we now looked at the pile of dirt that covered the grave I had dug.

"So who filled the hole in then?" As I asked it, I felt Nargacuga nudge my side. It didn't seem absurd for him to have filled the hole, and for some reason, I had thought the answer would be more convoluted, but my brain was also a mess of tangled thoughts.

I turned back around and Nargacuga turned with me, back toward Xander and Elder Einzel. They stared in wonder at the exchanges we shared.

"...So why can't I go home," I stated, tiredness beating up my posture despite having been passed out for a good while.

"It's because Nargacuga doesn't trust you," Xander said. My nostrils flared. "Wait..." I looked down at him and an idea appeared in front of me.

If you die, I die.

That was what our 'friendship' was founded on. This willingness to work with me, to tolerate their presence, that same self-centeredness I had despised came back around. I could understand caring about living, but the thought that Nargacuga, if his life weren't on the line would probably just kill all of us here and now, infuriated me.

However, this wasn't the case. Nargacuga read my frustrations and swiftly responded by resting his head on my chest. It was a soundless exchange, my hands finding their way to the sides of his face. First, my fingers touched his sharp beak, to which he pushed forward a bit and prompted my fingers to run through his fur.

My face tickled, it felt warm, and I received an array of emotions. The warmness, the regret, the curiosity. It assured me that he truly wanted to be with me. His throat thrummed, overtaking my doubts and making me less against the proposal.

"I..." Part of me felt he didn't trust me, which was fine, but I also felt a desire to understand our dynamic more, perhaps other curiosities as well. "I'm gonna need a change of clothes and some other stuff." I sighed.

Xander's face was a holiday, completely celebratory and zapping life into his body that could probably reopen his wound. "Man, man, man!" A grin tugged at my lips from hearing him say that so much.

"Think of all the stuff we're gonna learn from this! I promise you, you're not gonna regret taking the time to understand this. I have so many hunches man, we're gonna get to the bottom of this, but just imagine." Xander held out a hand, and his next words were whiplash.

"We could learn to befriend adult monsters, and no more senseless death over trivial misunderstandings would occur." The sentence struck an awkward chord within me. Nargacuga even seemed to flinch, or at least his eyes blinked once toward Xander.

Elder Einzel cleared her throat. "Xander, why don't you help me gather some stuff at the village for... our special Rider?" I was surprised she hadn't chewed Xander out from implying he would be sticking around, but it seemed his previous statement regarding his friends had brought out empathy within her.

Xander was blinded by his excitement, turning to leave. "Yes, we'll be back very soon. Oh, wait..." Xander fished something out of a satchel he was equipped with, then tossed something at me.

I caught a bar of soap, scentless and making me self-conscious about how clean it looked compared to my tattered clothes and skin. "A soap bar." He chirped. "Clean your wound and your body. I'll be back with new clothes."

Elder Einzel walked up to me. Her black eyes glazed over, a hand cupping my cheek in a motherly way. "Xander will come back with what you need. I... I want to send Jay but he would probably bring a Monstie. I don't think we're at that point, yet. As for me, I need to go find someone, but will be visiting you hopefully within the next couple of days." She seemed reluctant to go, so I grasped her hand and nodded.

"I'll see you soon," I replied. Elder Einzel annoyed me on many occasions, but she was overall a great lady who had essentially raised me. She was shrouded in mystery though, exemplifying the trait by the fact she was meeting with someone and didn't elaborate on who. Connections to our village were something I didn't know of deeply, but I had a feeling she was looking to involve someone in my situation.

"Okay. Go wash up, maybe gather some firewood before you do that. Xander will be bringing back plenty of other things." Her hand left mine, and both she and Xander set off.

I was brought out of my observance of their disappearing figures by a snort to my right. Looking over, I gripped the soap bar in my hand. Nargacuga tilted his head, to which I kneeled and brought his attention from the soap to me.

Water...

I thought of a lake, pond, river, and some body of water that I could use to wash up, then begin scrubbing my clothes. It would be easy to gather sticks along the way, I was just hoping Nargacuga sensed my need.

Surely enough, I could see the gears turning. He turned and began walking in a direction further away from the village. I wasn't sure how Xander was to find me, but I guess Elder Einzel had a way of handling that when she had assured me of his return.

I picked up sticks and found a couple of pieces of bark, all along the way to a pond. Nargacuga walked up to it, lapping up water. It was weird, but when he quenched his thirst I wondered why I didn't feel hungry or thirsty. Part of me felt thirst, but it was only an awareness of Nargacuga's, as I could feel it but knew it wasn't mine.

My shirt was the biggest victim of my recent struggles, holes from a nearby set of claws that had struck me well. Other clothes I stripped of were simply caked in dirt and not as much blood. Nargacuga finished drinking water, lying in front of the pond and huffing.

I walked past him, wading in with a bundle of clothes in my arms. Preferably, a bucket would be better for cleaning myself and my clothes outside the pond, but that wasn't something I had right now. I wasn't sure what Xander would bring back, though I was certain we had plenty of gear that could aid in my survival, a water filter and bucket being two possibilities.

A new shirt was preferable. I determined pretty quickly it wasn't worth cleaning as I waded in, balling it up and tossing it over to dry land. Nargacuga stared with interest, and I could feel curiosity poking at me with every action I made.

The water was cool, perfect for the humid weather that made me feel hotter than it was. My wound tingled as I held my arms up and my skin stretched in new directions. I hesitantly let my belly sink into the water, the scratch marks being near the upper area and painfully anticipating a watery plunge. I bit my lip and committed. Nargacuga's head jerked up, catching my attention.

"Shh, it's okay." I hissed, relief slowly replacing the stinging sensation. I let my wet shirt, socks, and drawers float nearby and decided to focus on myself, wanting this dirt off as fast as possible.

Soapy water formed all over my body as I scrubbed hastily at dirty areas of my body. The one area I hesitated was around the wounded area. I could feel Nargacuga staring me down and turned away to concentrate, not wanting to alarm him.

The soap hovered near the wound, where I could see dirt I had been afraid to touch. Slowly, the bar rested against the wound. It felt cruddy, but I gritted my teeth through the pain and began disposing of the dirt-ridden areas and dry blood splotches.

Chomp! I almost jumped out of my skin when a baked maw clamped lightly over my arm. Nargacuga had somehow snuck into the water during my concentrated state.

"What are you-" I gasped as he pulled and dragged me through the water. My free hand barely grabbed my nearby clothes, not wanting to lose them in the middle of the pond. I failed, looking over to try and calm him down.

"I'm fine, I need to clean the sound so it doesn't get infected." Nargacuga didn't listen, and I soon was stumbling out of the water. As soon as we met dry land, his body circled mine and he laid down.

A forepaw rested behind me, giving little space between his head and paw. I saw his eyes eat up my wound, and process my emotions, and I was unsure of how to assure him the pain was necessary.

"It's gonna heal." I had never tried as soothing of a tone as this. If I wasn't small before, kneeling beneath his head and looking up at him while caressing the side of his face made me feel like a palicoe.

"I just need to clean this. It'll help with the healing, to get the dirt off, and to prevent me from getting sick." There didn't seem to be any confusion as I said this, and so I wondered if the pain he sensed had sparked too much worry and if I'd just have to be more careful.

That's when he started licking me.
