As the elevator they were in continued to rise upward towards the central axis of the cylinder, Jake began to feel lighter.

He looked down from the massive bubble of water and just as he'd surmised, the ring he'd seen was a wide trough of water that surrounded the bubble much further away from the center where there would likely be about half normal gravity. The ring was built against the wall that made up this end of the living section of the cylinder and extended out from it a good two hundred and fifty feet to extend out past the water ball. He looked up overhead and saw exactly the same thing. It was a wide ring all around with the massive sphere of water floating freely at the center in zero gravity. The idea must be to swim in the huge water bubble at the center in zero gravity if you wished, or to drop down to the pool to swim at half gravity. Jake assumed all of the water slides he'd seen could be accessed from the outer edge of the pool and would take you the rest of the way down to the ocean where you could swim at normal gravity if you liked. He couldn't wait to try it.

He looked back to the middle and he could see some crocs shoot out of the ball of water at the center and slowly float toward the ring, doing all sorts of flips and stunts as they fell in slow motion in the extremely low gravity and then slowly sped up until they finally splashed into the pool below. He looked straight down below the elevator and noticed right at the edge of the pool against the wall there was a massive volume of water constantly pouring into the pool. This would be to replace water that Jake saw was draining out of various parts of the ring pool at the far edge into the water slides that went all the way down to the ocean.

"How in the world are you able to keep the sphere in the center like that?" Jake asked, "I know it's zero gravity but it seems like it would begin to leak out toward the pool eventually. It can't just float there perfectly with all of those people swimming around inside it like that."

"You are correct. It would eventually succumb to the weak gravity at its edges and slowly seep out to the ring pool that surrounds it. The ball of water and the water in the pool have both been given a static electric charge. Both are charged negatively and thus they repel each other strongly. The ball wants to stay away from the pool and the pool wants to push the ball away from it. It keeps the whole thing in place. The charge does not need to be very strong at all to overcome the imperceptibly weak gravity around the outer surface of the water bubble so you won't even notice it. We use a few other technological tricks to keep the ball centered over the ring and away from the wall."

"It's really amazing. This is such a massive and clever design. You take your recreation quite seriously," Jake chuckled.

"What could be more important?" asked Srythryn seriously.

Jake chuckled again and said, "I'm beginning to wonder. Could we go in? I have to try those slides."

Srythryn smiled and said, "Yes, but I must warn you. Due to the extreme curve and constant waviness of the surface of the sphere and the fact that the warped, magnified and twisted light is coming in from all around you, you cannot see out of it properly once inside. The sphere is quite large and it is easy to get disoriented in there and you will not be able to breathe obviously. My people are naturally equipped to hold our breaths for a very long time and we have no problem propelling ourselves through the water. It won't be very hard for you either compared to trying to move around in the air at zero gravity because you'll have something to work against, but as I said you could get your directions confused and run out of air while not realizing you are heading deeper into the sphere instead of out of it. I would prefer if you allow me to guide you to the edge of the sphere so you can dive into the ring pool immediately. I'd rather you stayed out of the sphere so you don't drown."

Jake was starting to get slightly annoyed by all this mother hen stuff but he loved the big croc and wasn't going to argue with him about something so trivial.

"OK, got it. You go ahead and I'll follow you," Jake said.

"Please, Jake, for my sake, be careful," Srythryn said once more.

"I promise I will," Jake said.

Srythryn smiled, turned to face the massive wall of water, and then he leaned forward with his arms extended over his head and pushed himself off the edge of the elevator with his feet out into mid air looking sort of like a big crocodile Superman as he flew threw the air and headed straight toward the huge bubble of water.

Jake took a deep breath and pushed off the rail.

He already knew he was in trouble when he began to spin uncontrollably. He'd had no idea how complicated it was to manage angular momentum and inertia under these conditions. "You looked fine. You were very entertaining. The universe needs clowns too you know," Srythryn chided.

"So where do we get on to the slides?" Jake asked.

Srythryn pointed to the edge of the pool at the far end and said, "There are many of them equally spaced along the outer side of the ring pool toward the living space. They are color coded according to speed. Green is a slow, long and very twisting ride. Blue is twisty as well but has some faster sections with a few good dips and corkscrews. Yellow is much faster with some longer drops along the way combined with some good loops. Orange is the fastest and is almost the equivalent of falling all the way with a few large, gut-wrenching, vertical loops and sharp turns here and there and you exit at high speed at the bottom. The inner surface of the tubes is coated with a substance that has a near-zero coefficient of friction which, combined with the water rushing along with you, will have you moving at tremendous speed.

There are several slides of each color interspersed all around the ring and all of them are unique so you don't need to worry about repeating the same ride twice very often. All of them end with a twist toward the beach down at the bottom and shoot you towards it when you exit the slide. You need only swim the rest of the way to the beach and ride an elevator back up to do it all again from the center."

"Great! Let's go!"

"Let us try blue first. It is a thrill to go faster on the yellow and orange but the blue is a good balance of fast parts and a longer ride to enjoy," Srythryn suggested.

Srythryn turned and began to swim toward the other side of the pool and Jake followed behind him. They approached the edge and there was a large tubular tunnel at the top of the rim of the pool that water from the pool was flowing into. Srythryn stopped him and said, "As I said before, my love, there are no safeties in place around here. Please be careful. If you were to go out over the edge of the pool you would be in free fall down to the ocean. It is a long way and a dangerous fall with the twisting tubes of the slides in the way. The long corkscrew finally began to straighten out and Jake was rocketing toward what he assumed would be the end of the ride. They turned and began walking toward the back wall and the elevators.

"I can't believe you would build all of this. The expense of it all and the energy it must take to move it all around in space with you wherever you go. Humans would never build anything like this even if they had the technology unless there were serious profits to be made. They wouldn't build it just to keep the people happy. They would think it was a big waste. They would make an interstellar ship as small as possible with everyone tucked into efficient little compartments. This ship is so amazing I could spend the rest of my life in here," Jake said.

"That is the point, my love. We do spend our entire lives here. It would lead to madness if we put ourselves in little boxes. It is important to enjoy life and so that is the major determining factor that goes into the design of our ships. This is just the living section. We have other entertainment based sections further along the cylinder that are dedicated to various activities such as low gravity soccer, zero gravity racket ball in a spherical court, and many other sports. There are kart races on massive, complex tracks that follow all the way around the ring of the cylinder. We have mock wars in low gravity with jet packs and dye ball shooting weapons. Those are just some examples. There are many activities to keep us occupied during our leisure time. Energy is not a major concern, though it is expensive. It is costly, but it is more than worth it," Srythryn said.

"That all sounds amazing to me. I can't wait to go up there and try zero gravity again. It's fairly obvious I really need the practice," Jake said.

As they reached the elevators Jake saw Thriststris, Striss and Trysslyn waiting for them.

"I hope you don't mind, my love, but I asked the others to join us in a slightly different zero gravity activity," Srythryn said.

"Oh? What sort of activity?" Jake asked.
