It was supposed to be a typical day at the Ham-Ham Clubhouse today but secretly she was hoping that It would be anything but. The reason was simple…tomorrow is her birthday! So she was sure that her beloved friends would try to make a surprise party for her and maybe this meant that they would need to come up with an excuse to make sure she wasn’t around today. Can’t have a surprise birthday party when the birthday girl knows about the surprise!

Knowing that and being the smart hamster that she is, Pashmina was willing to pretend she didn’t know anything and in case anyone asked her to run an errand or something outside, of course, she would do it. No questions asked! But…that’s why she was sad. As time passed, while they all had fun today was a normal day by the standards of the Clubhouse. That wasn't a bad thing, of course, that was good and she had fun there too. It's just...there was no one trying to get her out of there. Or at least, that only happened way later when most of the hamsters already left to go back to their homes.

“Come on now, just a bit longer Pashmina. We’re almost there, we promise.” Dexter said calmly as he kept his paw on Pashmina’s shoulder, standing right by her side as he helped to guide her through this tunnel. Sure, such a thing wouldn’t even be necessary…if they didn’t ask her to put her scarf on her eyes so she couldn’t see.

When she was about to go home she was stopped by Dexter and Howdy, saying they wanted to talk to her she felt conflicted. Oh no, were they going to fight against each other to see who could date her…AGAIN? Right before her birthday? She wasn’t sure if anybody, even Penelope remembered. It was quite upsetting! But when they asked if she could come with her for a bit she asked what it was for and the two males only looked at each other and both said it was for a surprise…how could she have refused? This is exactly what she was secretly hoping to happen! It made her quite happy!

Well except for the part about her not being able to see which made the two Hamsters act as her guides, step by step as they venture deeper into this tunnel. She allowed that to happen since it made sense, for a surprise. What could it be? Maybe it’s a gift? Or did they decide to throw the party one day earlier to catch her off-guard? Whatever it was, she was willing to find out!

There was one thing worrying her though. More than once, she felt a paw on her butt! There was one time she swore it even squeezed it! Was one of those two taking advantage of the situation to grope her body like this or it was her mind playing tricks on her? Pashmina wasn’t sure.

“You need to be more patient, Pashmina! Such a hurry to find out what this is about. What, you’re afraid you will be…in the dark forever?

Not only because it was exciting to know she wasn’t forgotten but because the idea of Dexter and Howdy working together was quite rare on those days. She felt bad thinking about it but it’s not like she asked for that to happen.

“AAndwe are here. Hope you understand, we couldn’t risk the others finding this out before you did. So we thought would be a good idea to put it near the end of one of Boss tunnels which don’t lead anywhere. Nobody should come here.” Dexter said and the only female in the tunnel felt his paws left her body followed by others that she knew belonged to Rowdy. Soon she heard his voice echoing in the tunnel as well.

“Come on, Pashmina. Open your eyes! I mean…after you take that scarf off, of course!”

Pashmina did it right way and was greeted with the view of both of her friends blocking the view of something right behind them. “What is that thing behind you guys? Come on, show me! I'm already here, don't tease me!”

They chuckled, seeming to be pleased with the girl unable to contain her curiosity. She was hoping for a secret party but maybe they were saving it for tomorrow and that was fine for her. A gift would do just as well at this moment! She didn’t need to insist for long as the two hamsters made a show and in her opinion, a fool of themselves as well when they theatrically got out of the way and started to clap their paws before pointing at what was on the ground with both of their paws like it was something very important.

“Happy Birthday Pashmina!” Both said in unison and Pashmina was surprised, wondering briefly if they practiced for it since it sounded perfect. But from the way, they looked at each other with a surprised expression followed by “sparks” already showing up between their faces she knew it was just a coincidence.

“We’re sorry that we had to ask you to come all this way but…we were embarrassed to give this to you in front of everyone. And I had the idea of-“

“You? You mean WE!”

“…Yes, we had the idea of hiding this here to give it to you. And one day before your birthday so you wouldn’t suspect a thing.” Dexter said as he rolled his eyes after Howdy’s interruption, making the girl giggle. That was something familiar to her, seeing them like this even when they were supposed to be working together!

Pashmina heard them explain as she finally could examine the object that they were hiding from her. She got closer and got on her knees to grab it and feel how soft and nice it was…indeed, it was a scarf! However, it wasn’t just any normal scarf though.

That one was so big that when the girl first looked at it, she wasn’t sure what exactly it was Only when she got closer did she understand that it was a pink scarf. “Hehe, seems you liked it a lot huh! It was worth the time and the work on it then!” Howdy said looking quite proud of himself leaving it up to Dexter to start to explain what Pashmina wanted to know.

“You remember Barrette, yes?” Dexter asked and Pashmina nodded her head now starting to understand and get excited just from the mention of that name. Of course, she remembered Barrette!

That was the name of a young female hamster who went to the Clubhouse a long time ago. But despite being younger than most of them she had an incredible talent for knitting. She was quite good at it, much better than Pashmina herself. So, if she had anything to do with this big scarf, things were making more sense as she knew Howdy and Dexter well, and…they have their talents, sure. And none of them were for knitting things….

“Well, we knew your birthday was close and we discussed many times what would be the best gift to give to you. Both of us kept coming up with suggestions to see which would come up with the best idea but we weren’t sure what to get. Then I remembered about Barrette and-“

“Hey! To talk to Barrette was my idea!” Howdy interrupted his frenemy, poking his shoulder covered by what he considered an omission from the other hamster to make himself look better in front of her.

“Yours?! But that…*sigh*…no, it’s fine. So WE remembered about Barrette and discussed the possibility of contacting her to ask her to do something for you.” While annoyed the hamster just adjusted his glasses and sighed, more interested In continuing to narrate the story than to have another silly fight with his eyes always closed.

“It took a while but we managed to find and talk to her about it. Being another girl and all that knows you well we knew she would have a great idea and that’s when she suggested giving you a big scarf! And she also mentioned that she could do it given her knack for knitting but it would mean a lot If the two of us helped her.”

“Eh? The two of you? But you guys never did anything like that before!” Pashmina was finding it quite hard to believe that not only they could help Barrette in knitting something this big but the idea of them working together at all, even if it was for her sake…could she relieve that?

“Well, it took a while for us to really uh…don’t get in the way of Barrette, let’s put it that way.” Dexter explained sounding a bit embarrassed and seeming that he couldn’t resist but to take a jab at Howdy just because he believed he could. “At least I did manage to get the idea eventually but Howdy Here took longer and ended up getting in the way quite a few times. I was afraid we wouldn’t finish it before your birthday.”

There’s no way Howdy could hear that and stay silent so he retorts immediately and is quite upset while searching for something inside his red apron. “S-shut up! I was too busy to practice, not all hamsters have all the time in the world to practice as you did. Besides don’t forget who was the one always coming over with the material we needed!” Howdy smiled once he found what he was looking for and pulled out from his apron a small ball of yarn. “I still have some with me but it’s good that we won’t need it. But hey it would be fine if we still needed it! After all, I’m a fearless hamster and do have balls..of yarn! Hehehe!”

If Howdy wanted to make the other hamsters laugh with his silly pun, he was doing it alone. That didn’t matter to Pashmina right now though. She just couldn’t believe it! That big scarf was proof that at least for a while those two put aside their differences and worked together to give her a good birthday gift! And it wasn’t a gift only from them, but from Barrette, a friend she hadn’t seen in a long time. It all just warmed her heart!

“I’m so happy…I never thought you two would put your feelings aside to work together to give me something like this. Thank you so much, guys!” She couldn’t control herself and he just hugged both of them at the same time making both of the males gasp but they immediately hugged her back. She would need to thank Barrette too as well, since that was her gift as well, and…Pashmina could only imagine how much patience the hamster probably needed to teach those two. And from how good and cozy the big scarf behind her looked, the girl did nothing less than a spectacular job! That was the work of love and dedication of all three of them for sure!

Both of the males blushed, not expecting Pashmina to hug them like this. Yet far from them to complain about it! “You know! We already made it very clear…we…we love you Pashmina. Both of us.” Howdy said and he looked quite serious, it was unusual for a hamster like him.

“And you already know that, for a long time. So…we waited, for you to decide who will be your mate. And waited…and waited some more…and nothing! After all this time! Can you imagine how infuriating that is?!”

Dexter was right to feel so upset about it, same as Howdy. That’s right, she…she knew for a long time about the feelings of both of her friends. She wasn’t stupid! It’s just..Pashmina didn’t feel the same for either of them. To her, both were her friends, the same as every other male in the clubhouse. That’s why no matter how much both insisted on the matter, she was always unable to choose one of them to date.

“I-I know that you two want me to choose but, I can’t do that. Both of you are my friends and-“

“Come on, not that excuse again! Don’t you see? We both put lots of effort into that gift to show you how much we care for you Pashmina!” Howdy complained advancing a bit more than Dexter towards her and the next thing she knew, she could feel the soft material of the big scarf right behind her. “We thought if you saw a gift like that it would help you with your decision. It’s not like all the guys in the Ham-Ham Clubhouse have feelings for you. It’s just me and Howdy. So…come on. Stop wasting so much time. Between me and Howdy, who do you want as your mate? Who…do you love?”

Pashmina usually felt comfortable in the presence of all her friends, including Dexter and Howdy. She knew that none of them would ever harm her but…looking at them now for some reason made her think how scary they were acting at this point. She felt that she needed to say something that wouldn’t piss off both of them but what she could do? If she chose one of them just to break up with that hamster later it wouldn’t solve the issue. So maybe she just needs to be more honest, she knew they would understand. It did make her feel bad, she knew that both were always trying to do things to win her heart but that’s just now how things work. The heart can’t choose who it loves.

“I can’t choose either of you. I like you both. The problem isn’t you guys, it’s…it’s me. I just don’t feel for any other hamster what you two feel for me. I’m sorry…but I hope this won’t hurt our friendship.”

She knew those guys for a long while so she expected them to understand, say they were sorry too and that they were happy to still be her friends and that she enjoyed that gift. “Yup. It is disappointing, but we were ready for this. You already kept us waiting too long to make up your mind. So we discussed this while working on your gift and we found out the solution for this problem is quite easy.”

“A…solution?” Pashmina was confused, how could such a problem have an easy solution? It’s not like she can turn a switch on and make her start to develop feelings for one of them in particular. Seeing the confusion on her face made both chuckles if expecting that. “Don’t you see? It’s the same thing I always see in the convenience store I live in. When Goldie is talking to a customer who isn’t sure of which two different products to take, know what Goldie does?” Howdy explained while raising each of his paws to symbolize different products as he talked about his owner, a guy called Goldie who was the owner of a convenience store in the area and it’s where Howdy “borrows” all the stuff he always brings to the Ham-Ham Clubhouse like the ball of yarn he showed before.

“Hmm…he tells the customer which product would be the best to suit their needs?”

Howdy chuckled as if the girl just told him an amazing joke. “Nope. He convinces the customer to take BOTH products instead of choosing just one!” he slaps his paws and that’s when Pashmina starts to have some idea where the hamster was going with this and she couldn’t say she liked that! “That’s right! So we thought it was the best option. See, if you are unable to choose, maybe we were wrong to make you do that. Why choose…when you can have both!” Dexter concluded and he seemed quite satisfied with that conclusion as if it was something that took a lot of effort to do.

“Why not? It’s not like there is a law that says a hamster can only have one boyfriend!”

“Yup. Besides look, Pashmina…we did prefer it if you had just chosen one of us. But since you are unable to, we talked about it and we realized that while we prefer that say…you chose me, if you had chosen Howdy I would understand. Since he’s the only one that loves you as much as me. And it’s the same with Howdy.

“Which is why we had come to this agreement. If today, even after getting such an awesome gift you still refuse between us then…we would take it as a sign that we both should be your boyfriends then. It’s so obvious I wish we had donethis a long time ago. Guess that’s why Goldie and his son have multiple girlfriends. They’re really smart guys!”

Maybe she expected something else, but the girl was smart enough to see that both of them were serious about this. Besides, even if you could leave you don’t know your way. You were blindfolded the entire time! Only Boss knows his way around those tunnels like the back of his paw. Without us, you can get lost for days…and never come back home. You don’t want that do you?”

Oh god, that’s right…she remembered how long she had to walk with them here. And they also had to go up and down many times…this place could be a big labyrinth! Only Boss would know it well enough to navigate without any issues and it wasn’t the same for her, whose only path she knew well was the tunnel that took her from her home to the Ham-Ham clubhouse.
