Ch 4: Conflict
Imported from SF2 with no description.
As we step through the tear into a small opening there's an immediately discernable difference in the temperature and humidity to the nature realm, as one would expect by the name, the majority of the realm was dense with foliage, from the wooded area that our gateway lead to, thusly referred to as our 'point of return', to the further afield forests, jungles and swamplands. Standing there for just a moment as the tear closed behind us, we each took in a deep breath of the muggy air, our nostrils flaring from the slight assault of new and vaguely exotic scents as we acclimatise to our surroundings before, following my lead, we all take to the skies.
Breaking through the treeline the looming overcast sky would make finding our direction a little more difficult with no sun immediately visible to go by, thankfully the compass on my foreleg saw to that problem and after a slight adjustment, climbing towards the clouds we were pointed north west; towards our destination. It was almost a shame that the clouds blanketed the skies, I'd hoped to see the red sun of this realm, but at least I could see the soft green hues of the sky beyond filtering through the shielding layer above, according to my directions the journey to our objective and back again would take six days, given nothing went wrong of course. So there'd be ample opportunity for me to bask in a ruby like star.
Focusing myself on flying in a straight line while taking in the scenery of the forest below, trying to make a mental note of any stand out landmarks, it didn't take long before I'd lost track of time, after all I never did have a good grasp of the concept. Leading our small trio I couldn't help but hear the occasional whisper or part giggle as the other two continued to gossip behind me, despite my earlier words to stop them. The fear of betrayal began to plague my mind again but I did my best to shake off the negative thoughts. I'm glad you're so eager to trust Inferno, I almost envy you Calamity.
We barely knew Inferno, after all we'd only met her this morning, yet I was expected to trust her to be my thrall simply because my Sire deemed it so? Of course I was supposed to oblige my Sires whim with no questions. That totally wouldn't get me killed, yet here we were, on a extraction he had set out for us. The familiar chain of obedience he'd woven yanked on my psyche and I am left to try to ignore the tightness, I will enjoy the journey while I can.
Growing weary of my inner monologues arguing, I focused on searching the terrain below, seeking an open clearing to land within the never ending sea of trees. It took a short while longer but eventually the trees below began to become a little more sparse and a section of field came into view, leaning forwards I gave a signalling flick down with my tail, indicating to the others that we were landing.
The flat field clearing was surrounded by ever more trees but with open air above, a nice bedding of grass had grown in the area cushioning our landings. After landing behind me, they both walked up to be beside me on either side, Inferno was panting hard from the exertion of the duration of our flight thus far, distracting me as I was trying to judge how much of day we had left by the dull glow of what I presumed to be the sun behind the still persistent clouds.
“Sheesh, my Tyrant, you can fly for an awfully long time." She complained. I ignored her and walked forward a few steps, she turned to face Calamity “How are you not out of breath Calamity?"
“I'm used to chasing my Dominion's sweet ass all over the place" Calamity retorted, clearly not caring to take our extraction seriously and choosing rather to think his sordid thoughts instead of paying any attention to our surroundings.
“Enough!" I growled, turning to face them both. I was not in the mood to deal with their antics. “We shall set up our night watch here" I stepped forward so all of our snouts were almost touching.
“Excellent, my Dominion" Calamity replied, unclipping his leather harness and placing the two small barrels of water that it secured onto the ground. “I will go hunting for us." Calamity stated before immediately launching himself back into the skies before I could stop him. I had planned to send Inferno off to hunt for us. I'd wanted to ask his opinion of her and to talk to him privately, given he'd spent so much time gossiping, perhaps I could have his thoughts, unlike my Sovereign, I knew I could trust the impatient green oaf.
“That puts me on water duty, my Tyrant" Inferno says after detaching the machete from her tail. She turns towards the barrels placed behind her. As she swings herself around a scent more familiar to me wafts over from her backside, my body immediately reacting as I feel a firm pulse between my hind legs and my eyes are drawn to her tail end. Heat?! I glare at her crimson scales, trying to pry my attention away without letting my focus wander, fighting the urge of my more primal instincts.
I manage to shake my head away from the building desires and imaginative thoughts just as Inferno turns back with an open barrel to place it before me, a wry smile catching my eye. My gaze narrows a little as I look to her but I dip my head down and begin to lap up the water to both quench my parched throat and try to help clear my mind, leaving enough for the other two. My fluster was getting the better of me as her radiance beamed on me. I had to find an excuse to separate myself from her, and quickly.
“I'm going to check the perimeter, you stand by here and quench your thirst, gather yourself, there's a lot more flying to do yet and I don't intend to lag behind because you can't keep up." My order is a little cold towards her, but hopefully it might draw a line. I can't be letting myself get distracted, perhaps it was a ploy! I still couldn't trust her, maybe she was trying to seize the opportunity to catch me off guard while Calamity was gone.
I turned and walked towards the tree line before she could properly react, setting out to secure the area for the nights watch. As I spend the time walking around the outskirts of the lush green forest I question what was going through my mind and chastise the hormones coursing through me without my consent. This was not the time for such vulgar ideas. Was it though? After all there was no one around. It would explain why so many dragons enjoyed venturing different realms... _Wait! _Again my mind betrays me!
I was working myself up when a clicking noise amongst the rustle of leaves beside me snaps my attention to the now. Just then I spotted a patch of red fur shadowed by the brown bark of a tree. My stance widens and the blades of my tail make an audible 'Shnk' noise as they slot together as I prepare for a potential ambush, a deep growl threateningly permeates the suddenly too quiet space in an attempt to dissuade whatever was watching me from attacking. The message was ignored.
The first red furry creature lunged out at me from beyond the bushes, launching towards me in a vain effort to surprise me, I strike across its face with my left claws, spiralling the comparatively smaller creature towards a nearby tree. A second sneaking figure tries to catch me upon my left flank, unluckily for it, my tail is already closing the distance and with a swift lunge I plunge the joined blades deeply into its spine. A swift dispatching of the creature, I get a slightly better look at my would be assailants as the one on my tail slumps to the ground. Red fur with black spots, somewhat feline in appearance with a thicker tail, likely arboreal in nature, using their tails and sharp claws to travel between trees and ambush their prey.
As if to prove my fast assessment a third member of the group drops down from the tree above, landing on my back, scraping sharp claws against my thick, smooth scales, unable to find any purchase to tear away my flesh, as it swipes and tries to dig in out of frustration I swing my head around and grab the felines neck in my jaws, squeezing my fangs into its throat, before tossing it around and onto the ground before me, an audible snap of the cats neck means another swift end of life. Glimpsing another rushed attempt to my right I swing the limp corpse in my maw to the side and release, launching the body at the fourth would be attacker just as they launch for my right side, hitting them mid air and tumbling back into the bush.
The first cat is back on its feet with three slash marks across the face, blood pouring from a now blinded right eye. The feline was contemplating it's choices of fight or flight. Hearing a yowl from the fourth of it's group- now trapped beneath the corpse I'd launched at it, the creature turns back choosing to help its companion and escape it's failed attempt. I simply stand proud and watch, my mouth slightly agape, dripping blood, my tail coiled and poised, stained equally so. My stance warning any further attempts as I would rather not have to extinguish any more life.
Accepting their defeat I watch as the surviving pair run away out of sight. I keep staring into the growing darkness of the trees for a moment before starting to relax slightly, though keeping my guard up just in case. I gather my two kills and move back towards the centre of our resting area. As I look back towards our landing spot I see Inferno racing towards me, she must have seen me defending myself from afar.
“Are you alright my Tyrant?" She looks me over closely, checking for wounds. I knew I had none, but, even so I still stretched out my wings for a moment, since the feline had landed on my back and my adrenaline had begun to flow, there was a chance I'd not realized my wings may have been nicked by the sharp claws. Thankfully I found no issues and proudly admired my red webs between my wing claws, getting a little too close and personal, Inferno started prodding me all over with her snout at least it showed she had concern for my well being.
I was about to say something when I heard approaching flapping, looking up I saw Calamity dashing through the air towards us, perhaps he'd seen the scuffle too, or simply assumed something had happened with Inferno concernedly inspecting me over. I noticed in his claws another five of the same red and black felines were clutched, more than enough for us to eat, he'd probably dropped on them from above, with a greater success than the one that had dropped on me.
Worry stricken, Calamity dropped his catch as he watches Inferno checking me over, closing the distance all too eager to inspect me himself. Trying to touch and push his snout against me in a similar manner to Inferno 'looking for open wounds', yet I know full well what he is up to. I strike him across the face with the flat of my tail, getting him to stop, though he's giving me the usual mischievous smirk. Another prod into the side of my belly and I snap a warning to Inferno that she will be next if she does not stop fussing over me too.
They both back off and smirk at me, like they have a hidden agenda. But I dismiss the looks with a slight grumble of annoyance before heading back over towards the water barrels, instructing Inferno to grab my two kills to add to Calamity's pile for us to set up for the night.
