Spirit and the Little Merman
Morning light was shining through the windows as a young foal was eating his cereal and he looked out the window to see the sea was calm that morning. "Grandma? Will Daddy be staying at home today? I saw he was still sleeping in bed," said the young colt. "No, Jamie," chuckled the old mare with blonde hair and she had a plate of pancakes set upon the table, "Your father should be up shortly." She perked her ears up as she heard her son's heavy hoof steps coming down the hall.
Spirit came downstairs rubbing his neck slowly as he made his way over to the coffee pot. "Mornin..." He said softly.
"I made you some pancakes," said the old mare as Jamie smiled to the stallion. "Morning, Daddy," he said happily.
"Thanks mom." He said kissing her cheek and sitting beside his son. "Morning son, how'd you sleep?”
The little foal smiled and snuggled up to his father. "Grandma says you're going fishing again," said Jamie, "Won't you take me with you one day?" His eyes beamed as he tried to look as cute as he could be.
Spirit smiles. "Maybe one day when your older son." He told him ate his food quickly. "What are you and grandma going to do today?”
"Well, Jamie has school today, and I plan on going shopping for groceries," she said, "You, however, have to get to work.”
Spirit nodded and gave his son a hug and kiss before doing the same with his mom. "Alright see you two later tonight." He told them before leaving for work
He drove his pick up truck down to the pier where a fishing boat was waiting for him. A Great Dane was on board straightening out the nets when he saw the stallion come up. "Hey Spirit," he said, "So, how'd your latest date go?"
Spirit waved to him. "Hey Danny, to be honest, not great. She was not what I had in mind at all." He told the Great Dane as he set his stuff down below and came up to start warming up the ship engines.
"What a pity," said the canine, "Well, since women haven't caught your eye, you ever thought of seeing other men instead?" He had finished untangling the nets and set them aside resting a hand on Spirit's shoulder. "I know it hasn't been easy since you lost Rain, may she rest in peace," said Danny, "But I'm sure there's someone waiting for you.”
Spirit sighed and nodded. "Yeah I've tried. Most don't want to help raise another person's kid too...thanks Danny. To be honest, I just think it's best if I don't worry about dating.”
"What? But Jamie's a great kid," said Danny, "But don't worry, tiger. You'll find the one. Heck, maybe you might find yourself a mermaid out here.”
Spirit couldn't help but laugh at that. "Oh yeah like that would ever happen." He shook his head and continued to work as the rest of the crew arrived. The helmsman named John, a golden Labrador arrived and hopped onto the boat greeting the others.
"Morning, John Boy," called Danny as he saw their designated "man at the wheel”.
"Morning Handsome." John flirted like he usually did. Spirit couldn't help but slightly feel jealous at the relationship those two seemingly had.
Danny smiled and kissed the other canine. "I was wondering when you'd come up. So, how many orders do we have to fill?" asked Danny.
"We have twenty orders to fill so as soon as the last guy gets here we'll head out." John said kissing Danny back while also grabbing the Dane's ass.
"So, where is he?" asked Danny looking around as he cuddled with his boyfriend.
"I'm not sure. But if he doesn't show up in five minutes we're leaving." John said holding Danny close. Spirit meanwhile made himself busy by going below and mixing up bait.
Down, beneath the surface of the sea, someone was having his own adventure. A human poked his head over a broken ship mast. From the waist up, he was a slim, but muscular human male with blonde hair that reached his shoulders, but from the waist down, there was a bright green fish tail. "Jazz, hurry up," he said to a timid great white shark.
Jazz was following his friend slowly. "Como we really shouldn't be down here. You know this place is off limits…"
"There it is," said Como pointing at a sunken cruise liner from long ago, "Isn't it fantastic?”
"It's just some old wreckage from above the ocean. You know the land dwellers never want to come pick their trash up..." He told him as Jazz kept looking around them.
"Don't tell me you're getting cold fins now, are you?" asked Como as he swam towards the wreckage.
"Hey I'm Cold blooded okay!" He shouted but followed his friend still not liking this.
"I know, but you always seem nervous. Besides, I've seen your cousins hang around these ships loads of times," said Como as he swam towards an old ship and he went up to the cabin, "Alright. I'm going inside. You can stay out here and watch for squids.”
He sighed and nodded as he looked around hoping no squids would show up.
But Como knew full well that Jazz would rather be with him than with any squids. "And three... Two... One," he said to himself before he heard a thump in the door.
"Como I'm coming with you!" He shouted trying to follow
Como chuckled as he tried to pull Jazz inside the ship. They looked around inside until Como saw a fork laying on the floor. "Oh, wow! This is so cool," he said in fascination and held it up for Jazz to see.
Jazz looked over it and gave the shark version of a shrug. "Whats so cool about it?”
"I've never seen anything like this before," said Como as he put it inside his hand bag and swam over to another table and held up a pipe, "I wonder what this is?”
"Yeah well can you hurry and look through this stuff so we can leave, being here gives me the creeps…"
"Jazz, will you just relax? Nothing's going to happen," said Como, but that's when the shark saw a beak like mouth and ten long tentacles reach inside to try and grab them!
"Como! It's a squid!" He screamed in terror.
Como grabbed his bag and both he and Jazz zig-zagged to escape the tentacles until the squid found itself tied around the mast outside.
Jazz panted heavily as he watched the wrapped up squid. "Can we go home now?”
Como giggled again. "Jazz, you're acting like a shark pup," he said as they both swam to the surface where they found a feral sea lion lazing around on a rock full of surface knick-knacks.
Jazz sighed and poked his head above water.
"Nigel," called Como when the sea lion grabbed a telescope and looked through the big end. "Gah, oh, oh! Como!" He called out, as though the merman were far away. "Good to see you! Why don't you come on over and...!" He lowered the telescope, and blinked when he saw Como right in front of him. "Huh. Fast swimmer.” "Nigel, look what we found," said Como holding up his hand bag.
Jazz just stayed back and watched this go on.
"Oh, more discoveries then, is it?" The sea lion moved in close,"Ahh, quite rare finds, these!" He chuckled, nodding to the fork first. "This here, my boy, is what's known as a Gellaf. That fur atop your head? Well, land dwellers use it to groom their hair." Then he looked to the smoking pipe. "And this... this here's a jip. Only used by the most esteemed in the land dweller courts. You see, what you do is, you put this end in your mouth..." He reached his neck out, taking the stem of the pipe into his maw. "Anf foo plow, ike tiss." He blew, sending a jet of water out of the pipe to splash Jazz's face.
Jazz shook it away and glared. "I think it's weird.”
Just then, they heard laughter coming from the shore. Como lowered himself down when he saw a little foal walking with an old mare. "Aww," said the merman, "That little fella is so cute.”
Jazz looked and shook his head. "Como don't even think about it…"
"What?" asked Como, "I'm just looking. Besides, it's nice to see that foal spending time with his grandmother. I mean, I know it's his grandmother because of the white in her mane.”
"Umm I guess so…"
It was then, they saw the two waving and Como ducked thinking that their cover was blown, but turned around to see a tall, handsome stallion on a boat waving to them. "Who is that?" asked Como as he was already beneath the waves.
Jazz had followed and swam deeper "Maybe fishers, we need to leave now Como!" He shouted.
"But... I've never seen a surface dweller this close before," said Como as he kept staring at the stallion with the golden fur and black muzzle and mane, "He's very handsome.”
Jazz rolled his eyes. "Como just leave it be, come on." He sighed and began swimming away. Up above Spirit grinned as he waved to his mother and son.
"But Jazz, what do you have against the surface? Please, help me understand," said Como as he swam alongside his best friend.
"They hunt anything and everything that lives in the sea...they pollute our home…"
"But they can't be all bad," said Como, "I've seen all the good surface dwellers can do." "And besides, I could tell you had a crush on that stallion," said Nigel, "I definitely ship it!”
"Oh my gosh, well it's not like you and him could be together though…"
Como looked downward. Nigel scowled at the shark. "Nice going," he said, "Now you made him sad.”
Jazz sighed. "Como I'm sorry but...but you know it's true...how could the two of you ever be together?”
Nigel then brightened. "Tell you what. How about you write a letter to him and I can deliver it myself?" asked the sea lion. "You'd do that for me?" asked Como smiling. "Of course," said Nigel, "I live on land anyway, so it shouldn't be too difficult." Como smiled hugging the sea lion before heading back down to the bottom of the sea with Jazz trying to keep up.
Jazz sighed and swam as fast as he could after him
"So, all I have to do is get home, come up with some excuse as to where I was, write the letter and then sneak back to the surface," said Como, "How can it fail, Jazz?" "You'll do what?" said a new, but familiar voice making both Como and Jazz stop in place as the king's advisor, Kelpi, an anthro merstallion, appeared.
"Ah oh hey Kelpi...." Jazz said quickly nervous.
"Did I hear you say you'll sneak back to the surface?" asked Kelpi, "Como, your father has strictly forbidden you to-" "But Kelpi, you don't understand," said Como, "I just saw the man of my dreams." "What?" asked Kelpi confused and looked Kelpi.
"I-I really don't understand either Kelpi…"
"Como, if your father learned I let you swim to the surface, again, he'd have my head!" said Kelpi.
"Como please listen to Kelpi…"
"You're not going to tell him, are you?" asked Como nervously to Kelpi, "Father would never understand.”
Kelpi frowned. "You know I really should…"
"But he's in love with a land dweller!" shouted Jazz but covered his fins cowering behind Como.
"Yes I know..." He groaned at that. "Como please, please just try and forget about the land dweller and stop going so close to the surface.”
Como sighed sadly as he followed Kelpi home.
Kelpi swam them home knowing how much trouble he could get into.
Como gulped hoping his father would listen to him this time.
Kelpi swam into the undersea palace soon after.
Jazz swam along side Como feeling nervous and sure enough, the sea king was furious when he learned about Como sneaking to the surface. After yelling at each other, Como left the throne room in tears.
Kelpi sighed and swam up to the king. "Sire I know he messed up, but don't you think you were a bit harsh on him?”
"Maybe," said the king, "But I'm only concerned that he stays safe.”
"I understand sire, but I remember when we were both his age and would go getting into all sorts of trouble ourselves.”
But the king raised an eyebrow at Kelpi. "Aren't you supposed to be keeping an eye on him?" he asked.
"Of course sire." He bowed and left to follow the prince.
But unknown to Kelpi and the sea king, Como and Jazz had already snuck away from the palace.
Above water, Spirit had seen a storm approaching and told the crew. They had started to turn around but the storm was on them faster than they thought. As it rocked the boat everyone rushed to tie things down until with a loud creak, Spirit was slammed in the head by the mast arm and thrown overboard.
Luckily, Como had arrived just in time to see what happened. Thinking fast and without hesitation, he swam over to pull the stallion to shore making sure his head was above the water.
Spirit was out cold barely breathing as he felt this was the end.
On the shore, Como panted as he looked down at the horse when Nigel came up. "Is he dead?" he asked worriedly. Jazz watched from the shallows, worried as well. None of them noticed Kelpi watching from behind a rock, staring at Como and the land dweller in horror. Spirit choked, and groaned as he coughed up sea water. He could hear voices, but his head hurt so much. He drifted in and out of consciousness, his eyes trying to flutter open. Como smiled seeing that Spirit was alright. He caressed the stallion gently and kissed his lips lovingly before he hummed a soft lullaby. It was then Como heard voices in the distance and he dove back into the water as the stallion was awoken by his son, Jamie.
Spirit groaned slowly opening his eyes and seeing his son above him. Slowly he raised his head hugging his son. "What happened?" He asked to whoever was with them as he rubbed his head.
"Daddy!" hugged Jamie as Spirit's mother, Dawn, Danny and John came running. "We were going to ask you the same thing," said Danny.
"Felt like I got slammed and then thrown..." He said feeling a big welt on the back of his head where the mast hit him. "Well you can think that over during your two weeks off. I'm sending you home with pay." John stated giving Spirit no room to argue about it.
"But who saved you?" asked Jamie looking up at his father making Spirit remember that there was a young man beside him before the others got here.
"I don't know, it was some man who saved me I guess, before you guys came over I guess he saved me and brought me here..." He said looking out toward the water.
Como peeked out from the water when he was behind a rock. He felt his heart yearning for the stallion and he turned to Jazz. "I think I'm in love," he whispered to the shark. Kelpi heard Como and he gasped before fainting.
After assuring everyone he was alright they all began to head home with Spirit carrying his son on his shoulders.
Como sighed as he slipped back under water and he swam down to a clear patch not too far from the shore. "I would give anything if I could be with that stallion," said the little merman. Just then, there was a big bang followed by a burst of bubbles and a brightly colored eel with yellow stripes appeared. "Did I hear you say you'd give anything?" he said grinning. Jazz flinched at the bang, and then immediately swam in between the eel and Como. "Wh-who are you…?!" "Let's just say, I'm someone who can grant you any wish you desire," said the eel. "You mean, you'll make me land dweller?" asked Como. "For a fee," said the eel. That's when Kelpi came swimming in.
"Get away from him Como! That eel is not to be trusted!" He yelled.
The eel snapped his fingers and seaweed wrapped around the sea horse's mouth. "Uh, we're talking," said the eel, "But you're more than welcome to listen." He turned back to Como. "So, here's my deal: I will cast a spell that will turn you human for three days, but you will have to give me your voice in order to make it work. And to do that, you'll have to sign this contract," he said as he made a scroll magically appear. "I'll do it," said Como as he signed the scroll and out of his throat, a glowing orb came flying out of his mouth and the eel held up an oyster that opened and clamped it shut. The scroll disappeared and the eel smirked as he waved his hands. "Bibbidi bobbidi boo!" he said and Como felt his tail morph into legs but he had trouble breathing underwater. Jazz quickly rushed in to bring him up to the surface. Spirit and the others had left, so Como was relieved that they didn't see him yet.
Back at home Spirit was making dinner for everyone.
Jamie was excited. "What're we eating?" asked the young foal as he was bouncing up and down beside his father.
Spirit chuckled. "I'm making some lasagna son. Your grandma is making the salad to go with it.”
"Well, where is she?" asked Jamie looking around for Dawn but then remembered that she had gone to the grocery to get the items. That's when the phone rang.
Spirit grins. "Watch the sauce for me son." He told him as he turned it on low and went to answer the phone.
"Hey, Spirit, it's Mom," said Dawn's voice, "I'm afraid I got a flat tire near the shore you were rescued from... Wait... I think I see someone... Uh, son? You might want to get down here.”
"Okay hold on mom." He said quickly turning off the stove. Gathering up Jamie went over to his truck making sure to grab his replacement tire. Then he began driving down to where she was.
Dawn was facing the beach in surprise and when her son arrived she walked over to him. "Spirit, it would seem this beach has a new victim but... I don't even know where he came from," she said pointing towards the beach. Laying on the sand where the waves were lapping at his legs was a human completely nude and facing downward. His blonde hair was fluttering in the wind and some of it was swaying in the water. "Why's he naked, Daddy?" asked Jamie when Dawn pulled Jamie close and covered the foal's eyes.
Spirit quickly grabbed the blanket he kept in the truck. "Stay here with grandma son." He told him before walking over to the figure and leaning down wrapping him up in the blanket. Lifting it up he then started back. "Let's change the tire and then drive him home." He said setting him in his truck before going and changing Dawn's tire.
"Poor thing must've been washed up from a shipwreck or something," said Dawn worriedly as Spirit changed the tire on her car, "But what I don't understand is what happened to his clothes.”
"Me neither, but we'll take him home and call Doctor Cherry tomorrow." He said referring to the towns doctor. After changing the tire he had Jamie ride with Dawn on the way home as he drove back with the figure.
When they arrived, the human was dressed and placed on the couch. Jamie, still full of curiosity kept a close eye on him until. "Dad! He's awake!" he called startling the human and made the poor boy cower a little bit before falling off the couch and rubbing his head. "Jamie, behave yourself," scolded Dawn. "Oops," said Jamie blushing smiling apologetically, "Sorry." Como smiled as he tried to stand but his legs wobbled and he began swaying. He wasn't used to walking upright and it proved to be difficult.
Spirit came out. "Well your finally awake, we were hoping you'd still be alive or I'd let Jamie bury you." He joked.
Como blushed and opened his mouth to speak forgetting his voice was gone. "Can't you speak, dear?" asked Dawn softly as she helped Como stand up straight after his failed attempts at walking.
Spirit found some sort of deja vu as he felt he had seen that face before. Shaking it away. "Well we can worry about that tomorrow. For now are you hungry?”
Como smiled and nodded his head. "Can he sit by me?" asked Jamie as he helped Como to a chair next to his usual spot. Como smiled at the foal and then he saw the fork on the table smiling and began combing his hair with it until he noticed them all staring at him. "Pssst," whispered Jamie, "We're not supposed to brush our manes at the table." Como blushed as he slowly set the fork down on the table making Jamie giggle.
Spirit chuckled and set down a plate for everyone and replaced Como's fork.
Como blushed as Jamie bit into his lasagna. Como tried to copy the motion but when he bit into the hot dish, he started panting with his tongue out and drank his whole glass. Jamie was giggling non-stop until Dawn raised an eyebrow at him. Como blushed again and gave a goofy grin.
"It's better if you blow on it." Spirit chuckles at that.
Como held his piece up on it and blew hard on it accidentally blowing it off his fork. He tried again and the same thing happened. Jamie was trying his best not to burst out laughing. Even Dawn found this spectacle amusing.
Spirit shook his head and showed him how to blow gently on it before taking a bite.
"What do we call him?" asked Jamie at last after Como learned how to eat properly.
"I'm not sure, can you write?" Spirit asked Como.
Como tilted his head in confusion and shook his head. "Is it Herbert?" asked Jamie and Como stuck his tongue out in disgust while shaking his head no. "Yeah, I don't like 'Herbert' either," said the foal.
"Does your name start with a C?" Spirit asked.
Como smiled nodding.
"Alright were getting somewhere. Now is the second letter a, e, I, o, or u?"
Then Como made an "O" with his hands. "It's an 'O', Daddy," said Jamie smiling.
"Alright hehe, so we know it's a C and O, how many more letters?”
Como thought for a moment and then held two fingers up. "Well, at least he knows how to read and count," said Dawn smiling and seeing how well this young human was connecting with both Spirit and Jamie.
Spirit nodded. "That it is, alright mom it's your turn to guess a letter." He grinned.
"Hmmm," thought Dawn and Como nodded again. "What?" she asked confused and then gasped, "Oh, you mean the letter 'M'." Como smiled and nodded again. Then he held up his hands in an "O" shape again.
"So Como?" Spirit asked grinning.
The human nodded smiling. "I like it," said Jamie smiling as Como smiled back at the foal hugging him gently. "Uh... You're welcome," said the foal blushing.
Spirit chuckles. "Well Como just to be safe tomorrow while my mom takes Jamie to school I'll take you to see the doctor.”
Como looked nervous when he heard the word "doctor". "Don't worry," said Jamie holding Como's hand, "Dr. Cherry's really nice." The human sighed as he held the foal's hand and looked up at Spirit.
Spirit nodded. "She's one of the best doctors in town." He promised as be ate his food
Como smiled as he finished up his. "Now, what do we do about sleeping arrangements?" asked Dawn. "Can he sleep with Daddy?" asked Jamie. Como blushed bashfully. "Jamie, your dad might not want some stranger sleeping with him just yet... Unless you think he can sleep on the couch. Spirit? What do you think?" Como looked up at Spirit, not wanting to be apart from the stallion's side.
"Well it should be alright if he slept on the couch." Spirit chuckled. "You don't mind do you Como?”
Como looked down sadly. "Aww," said Jamie scooting closer and snuggling with the human, "But he looks so lonely.”
"Jamie we just met him. I'm sure he's a good person. Plus...I'm not ready to have someone else in my bed…"
Como looked up at Spirit feeling hurt when Dawn stepped in. "Why not just have him sleep with you for tonight and then figure things out from there?" she asked hoping to reach a compromise, "Besides, I'm not sure he has anywhere else.”
Spirit sighed. "Alright I guess that'll be fine." He said feeling slightly pushed into it.
Como smiled looking happy again like a little lost puppy that just found a new home.
After dinner Spirit started washing the dishes. "Jamie go brush your teeth son.”
The foal hugged his father and then Dawn before rushing off. "Come on, Como, I can show you how to brush your teeth," said Jamie as he led Como to the bathroom as the foal pulled out a new toothbrush. "You know, for a human, he's actually kind of sweet," said Dawn, "Jamie seems to be fond of him.”
"Yeah he is." He nodded as he washed the plates.
"You said that someone saved you from drowning when we found you.... You don't suppose..." she said trailing off looking in the direction that Jamie and Como went in as she heard Jamie giggling and laughing as well as showing Como how to use a few things correctly. "Why don't you check up on him? I'll finish the dishes," said Dawn. When Spirit arrived, Como had finally gotten the hang of brushing his teeth. Jamie was still giggling as his dad came up. "He was using the toothbrush to comb his eyebrows and then a hairbrush to brush his teeth... It was so funny until he almost washed himself with a toilet brush though. I had to stop him before he used it.”
Spirit chuckled and rubbed his sons head. "Good job son, now go get ready for bed. I'll be in to tuck you in soon.”
"Yes, Daddy," said the little foal as he went to his room. Como looked up with a toothpaste covered smile at Spirit that was almost adorable.
Spirit grinned and shook his head. "Make sure to rinse well Como then I can show you my room.”
Como nodded as he turned on the faucet. The running water made him jump but stare at it with fascination.
Spirit then showed him the cup set by the sink. He filled it with water and then gave it to Como.
Como was swishing the water back and forth and seeing how Jamie spat it out earlier, he did the same into the sink. He looked to Spirit with a warm smile looking up at the stallion feeling glad to be by his side.
"Great job, now follow me." He said and led him to his master bedroom that held a big four poster queen sized bed.
Como then sat down on it but went wide eyed at how soft it was. Then he leapt onto it and snuggled with one of the pillows sighing and looking like a tiny child snuggling a stuffed animal.
Spirit couldn't help but laugh at that. "Well I'll be back in a bit." He said and then headed to Jamie's room. He saw his son already in his pj's and in bed. "That's my boy." He said and tucked the young colt in.
"I like, Como, Daddy," said Jamie, "Can he live with us?" He was in bed looking up at his father with a stuffed pony in his arms.
Spirit looked down at the stuffed pony. It was in a likeness to rain so Jamie would always have his mom close. “We’ll see, son. He seems like a nice guy. Now goodnight, get some sleep." He kissing his son’s head as he then walked out and went to check on his mom.
Como was already asleep in bed but he had opened his eyes a little to see a photo of Spirit and Jamie with a mare he didn't recognize. He examined the photo carefully. When Spirit came in, Como looked up and pointed to the mare in the picture.
Spirit froze and sighed. "That's a picture of me and Jamie with...my wife..." He said before going to sit on the bed.
Como tilted his head and shrugged his shoulders looking around for any indication that she was still living with them.
Spirit closed his eyes and began to softly cry.
Como's eyes widened as he wobbled forward and held Spirit's hand in his while cupping the stallion's cheek. A soft look of concern was on the human's face as he wanted to know what was wrong.
"She...she passed a few years ago..." He said holding back sobs.
Como gasped and then brought the stallion into a hug while rubbing his back comfortingly as they both lay down on the bed. Como then pressed a soft kiss on Spirit's cheek and offered a warm smile as if to say that everything was going to be okay.
Spirit sighed and nodded pulling away. "Thanks Como...well I guess we should get some sleep now..." He said and began to take off his shirt showing off his chiseled chest and stomach.
Como reached out to touch the stallion's six-pack abs but he held back fearing that was too forward and the stallion wouldn't want him touching his body.
Spirit didn't notice as next he pulled his pants off showing just him and his boxers. Turning out the light he laid down and pulled the blankets up to his neck. "Night Como.”
Como snuggled closer as he slowly wrapped an arm around Spirit, in case he felt lonely for his wife. He never knew the stallion was a widower and Como felt more love for the stallion then before as he snuggled close hoping to keep Spirit safe from his depression.
Spirit sighed and gently pushed Como back. "I appreciate it Como but...I can't right now…"
Como sighed silently as he lay there in bed drifting off to sleep.
