Ch. 6, Blaze of Glory Everyone pitched in, helping to clean up the mess both from the "ghost" attack and the trap Justin and the others had set. In no time at all, the gym looked almost brand new. "Are you the son of Henry Zephyr?" asked Justin hoping that hearing that name wouldn't bring up any painful memories for the visitor. He sighed, looking over to Justin, but nodded. "That I am. Call me Felix, young man." He mustered up a polite smile and held out a hand, shaking with both Justin and Blake. "Jenny here called me over because of some big hubbub about the old man and his 'curse'." "Actually, there never was a curse," said Justin as he picked up the diary and handed it to Felix along with the will. The young man could see that Felix had a Hawlucha by his side. The Pokémon looked up to see his trainer had tears in his eyes as he looked over the papers. "It turns out, some greedy trainer tried to scare your daughter into thinking the gym was haunted so that he could take it for himself," replied Justin, "But we took care of him." "I..." He shook his head. "I don't even know what to think. After everything that happened..." He took in a deep breath, let it out slowly, and then nodded to Justin. "Thank you for this." "You're welcome," said Justin, "Now, let's get back to cleaning this place up." He looked to Suicuine who was using his ice beam to hold up the supports while Blaze was wielding them back in place. "Almost done." Blake nodded to Justin with a smile. Felix looked around, humming -- impressed. "The place almost looks brand new." "It's almost done," called Justin. And before long, everything was back to normal. "Now, Blake, I know we promised a gym battle but first how about some lunch?" said Jenny, "Can't have a battle on an empty stomach." "Now you're speaking my language!" He grinned and nodded. "We could use some fuel after all that work. Right, guys?" "Right!" Crash grinned, while Blaze -- who had settled himself atop Raikou's head -- nodded. Justin smiled and Mightyena was already wagging his tail furiously at the mention of food. Everyone gathered around, both Pokémon and human; Suicune moving in next to Justin along with Mightyena, Grooky, and Electrike. Raikou was sitting next to Blake purring every now and then and felt his new trainer occasionally petting him. Lunch was served, and everyone dug in eagerly -- poffins for the Pokémons, and a spicy curry for the humans, courtesy of Jenny herself. As they ate, everyone chatted about the chase to beat the 'ghost', and their efforts to rebuild the gym; Blake and Raikou seemed a little flushed while glancing at one another, while Blake's Pokémons praised Grooky and Mightyena for their ingenuity and courage. Justin smiled but he noticed a worried look on Grookey's face. "Are you okay?" asked Justin softly as he gently stroked the Grass Monkey's head. "Hm?" Grooky looked up at the human's touch, then looked away. "Yeah, I'm okay." He glanced to Mightyena, sigheed, and then gave Justin a slightly-shaky smile. "Still a little shaken up for the gh-ghost thing, but I'll be okay.” "You're worried about battling, aren't you?" asked Justin softly, "It's okay to be nervous. You should never be afraid to ask for help.” "B-but... what if I can't do it well? Or if I..." His gaze lowered. "...If I get in the way?" Justin pulled Grookey onto his lap and hugged him. “Just because you fail at something doesn’t mean you should give up,” he said softly, “If you don’t find it easy the first time, you keep on trying or find another way to reach your goal.” Grookey pressed in against Justin, hugging onto the human. Soon enough, everyone finished off their meals, giving plenty of words of gratitude to Jenny. Blake was energized, ready to go -- and so was the gym leader and her team. Later, Jenny and Blake were in position and ready to go. “Trainers, have your Pokémon ready,” called Felix as he resided as referee. "Ready to go!" Blake nodded with a wide grin. Blaze was perched on his shoulder once more, while Crash stood tall and proud at his trainer's side. Raikou was standing behind Blake as a last resort just in case. Jenny smirked as she sent out her Medicham to face Blake in the first round. "Medicham, huh?" Blake nodded, then reached up to scritch under Blaze's neck. "Think you can take this one, Blaze?" "Yeah. I know I can." With a nod and a determined look, Blaze hopped down and hunched into a ready stance in front of Blake. "First round, Gym Leader Jenny's Medicham vs. Trainer Blake's Litten!" Felix held up a hand. "The match is over when one Pokémon is knocked out or called back! Ready...! And begin!" "Medicham, use High Jump Kick!" called Jenny as the Medicham ran towards Blaze and jumped into the air and was flying towards the Litten ready to attack with one leg extended. Both Blake and Blaze stood their ground, watching the Medicham closely. The human didn't even have to say anything; just when the High Jump Kick was about to strike, the Litten dodged out of the way. "Use Bite, Blaze!" Immediately, Blaze twisted himself around and lunged at Medicham's still-extended leg to bite it. Medicham tried to avoid the bite, but his foot was caught in Blaze's teeth. The Meditate Pokémon staggered back and limped a little, but was able to fight still. "Use Zen Headbutt!" called Jenny and then Medicham put his hands together, and his head hardened before he sped towards the Litten. Unfortunately, Blaze wasn't able to get out of the way that time; he yowled as the headbutt slammed into his side, but clung onto the Meditate Pokémon with his claws. "You're right there, Blaze! Give him a Lick!" Still wincing in pain, Blaze did just that; he leaned in and gave the Medicham a lick right across the face. Medicham yelped and shook his head but then became frozen in place. "Medicham's become paralyzed!" Felix looked to Jenny, waiting for what his daughter would do. Jenny was shocked. "Use Confusion!" called Jenny and Medicham's eyes flashed and Blaze found himself levitating towards the ceiling before being slammed down onto the ground. "Blaze!" Blake looked almost ready to run out onto the arena, but stopped himself. "Come on, shake it off...!" Blaze let out a weak meow as he forced himself up onto all fours, shaking his head. For just a moment his eyes looked unfocused as he staggered, but with another yowl he righted himself gave Medicham a glare. "Yeah!" Blake cheered. "Come on, give him a Fury Swipes!" Blaze darted forward and lunged at the Medicham again, swiping wildly. One of his strikes missed, going a little wide, but the others slashed across the Meditate Pokémon's arms as he raised them to defend himself. Medicham yelped as he tried to block the swipes and he was panting heavily. "Use Psybeam!" called Jenny and Medicham put his hands together as a beam formed on the top of his head and started to fire at Blaze. However, Blaze was too close for it to hit; he dodged to the side, clinging to Medicham's shoulder again. "One more Lick should do it! Go for it!" Medicham was still recovering from his last attack, and so couldn't even react as Blaze gave him another Lick. Medicham froze up from the lick leaving it vulnerable to one last attack. "Finish him off, Blaze! Bite 'em!" Blaze obliged, biting into Medicham's shoulder before jumping away, landing on all four feet in front of Blake. Medicham yelped but the bite had turned into flames and Medicham had burst into flame for a moment and then fainted looking singed. "Medicham is unable to battle," called Felix, "Victory to Blake and Blaze." Suddenly, the Litten began glowing. "Blaze...?" Blake watched, wide-eyed, as Blaze's form grew larger and gained bulk. A burst of fire at his throat became a ball-like shape. With a roar from the Pokémon, the white light faded. BLAZE evolved into a TORRACAT! "Blaze!" With a wide grin, Blake held his arms out for Blaze to jump into, which the Fire Cat Pokémon was eager to do; the human grunted a little bit, Blaze now much larger and heavier, but was eager to hug him tightly while Blaze nuzzled him in joy. Justin, sitting on the side lines with his own team, cheered for them both with Mightyena giving a long howl along with Electrike and Grookey was hopping up and down with excitement. Felix and Jenny shared a look, a smile, and a nod. "Medicham, return," called Jenny as she summoned Medicham back and whispered, "You did a great job. Get some rest." She then pulled out another Pokéball. "Are you ready for round two?" she called. "Yeah, I am." Blake set Blaze down, the Torracat settling in at his trainer's side, and then looked down to Crash. "You're up next, Crash. You ready?" "Been a while since I've been in a proper gym battle." The floatzel stretched a bit, and then moved forward to take his place in front of Blake. "I've kind of missed it." He looked back to the human, grinned, and nodded. "Ready!" Jenny grinned as she summoned a Lucario next. "Use Force Palm!" called Jenny. Instead of trying to dodge away, Blake hunkered down. He gritted his teeth under the Lucario's strikes, but... "Now! Aqua Jet!" With a snarl -- half of effort, half at the prospect of catching the Aura Pokémon off-guard, the Floatzel blasted the Lucario right in the chest, knocking the other Pokémon back. "Use Double team!" yelled Jenny when Lucario landed on his feet after the first hit and soon more than one Lucario appeared. The Floatzel looked from Lucario to Lucario, staying ready for the other Pokémon's attack as he readied himself for his own. "More than one, huh? Alright, then... let's blow 'em all away!" Blake gave Crash a nod. "Whirlpool!" Crash grinned, and then raised his arm, summoning a vortex of water around himself. Then, with a spin and a lash of his tails, he sent it careening over to slam into the line of Lucario, trapping them inside of it. However, they all jumped and most of them vanished as the real one appeared above Crash. "Now use Steel Beam!" called Jenny as the Lucario extended an energy baton and delivered a hard blow onto Crash. "Crash!" Blaze winced, looking to the Pokémon in concern. The floatzel was beaten down, but shakily got back to his feet. "I'm... fine...!" The floatzel grunted and brushed himself off. "I've been through worse!" "Alright... Then..." Blake hardened his expression. "Get in close and give him a Double Hit!" "Right!" Pushing through the pain, Crash bumrushed the Lucario, leaping to give the other Pokémon a pair of strikes. Both Blake and Jenny watched, trying to see whose Pokémon would come out on top. In the end, it was Crash who came out victorious with Lucario laying unconscious. "Lucario is unable to battle!"
