Chapter 14: Building a Machine
A diamond globe rested at the centre of a sketched hexagon on a sheet of infinite paper. A hybrid of human features and Great Dane dog stood at the centre of the auditorium dais.
Sketched humans placed a sapphire orb and an amethyst orb on neighbouring points of the hexagon. A chestnut horse and a shaggy grizzly avatar took their corresponding positions on the dais – Braid and Zaru projected strength and solidity as they stood.
Three minds hummed together in harmony, pouring energy across their dimensional interface.
The tiger, Fate, moved to his place as the humans added a fourth gem to the hexagon. His rich voice joined the chorus.
An imposing ebony bull stood on the next vertex. Ikon thrummed as his topaz crystal rested on the paper world.
As the giant orca form of Silas approached his station the humming fell silent. His emerald crystal had been correctly positioned but it wasn’t placed on the vertex by human hands. A small robotic tool used by the human scientists retreated from the crystal. “Uh… have the humans screwed it up?” Silas asked in his chirruping voice. He glanced up at the paper ceiling where sketched humans fussed. One of the outlined humans re-seated the emerald with his hands. Satisfied, the six avatars resumed their hummed musical chord, pouring energy into their glowing gemstones.
Willow strode gracefully toward the final vertex of the hexagon. His deer physique projected elegance and poise as he walked. An anxious sketched human placed the final gem, aquamarine on the sixth vertex of the hexagon. Cautiously the human removed his hands from the final component of the machine.
In unison the seven hybrid avatars let out a sigh, musical in tone. The minds who were the machine were complete, constructed across two universes, linking dimensions.
The large pearl with a thousand golden threads binding together two trees of consequences entered the ‘now’ nexus of Chase’s event construction.
