Chapter one – The world around us
Imported from SF2 with no description.
Have you ever thought about how it would be, if furs and humans would live together in one place?
You want a hint? It is far from perfect!
The day appeared normal, nothing out of the ordinary; many furs and humans passed by each other on the streets. It was a typical morning in the biggest city of this world. The rush hour traffic made a lot of noise as everyone tried to get home or to work, and some, the young ones, to COHAF primary school.
When the annoying never changing sound of a school bell signaled, that the first lesson just began, everyone sat in their seats and waited for the teacher. Usually, the teacher, a young woman, came immediately after the bell rang, but now it was five minutes after and the teacher was nowhere to be seen. Finally, familiar steps could be heard on the floor, but with some other unknown noise. When the glass-made door opened, the whole class stood up for greeting, but stayed surprised when a young, only twelve years old wolf female on a wheelchair came through the door followed by the teacher.
The class filled immediately with silent whispers - "What is she doing here?" - or - "Why is she here?"
The teacher caught these whispers and asked for attention, which was not too hard to get, because everyone wanted to know what was going on. She explained that the female’s name is Aki and that from now on she belongs in their class.
Aki was a beautiful wolf, her clean white fur shined in the light as if it would be made from glittering crystals and so did her long soft white hair. Her blue clothes matched well with her icy blue eyes. On her neck was a metallic collar, which carried all the information about its owner. This was kind of an ID, because you could not expect fingerprints from furs. You could wear the collar around the neck, the wrist, or even around the ankle, but you must have it with you, this was a strict law.
The whole room broke out in whispers again. Suddenly a hand rose in the air from the middle of the class. It was a boy with long white hair tied to a ponytail, wearing a white jacket with a black t-shirt under it and black trousers with large side pockets. His name was Kass. He wanted to know why the furball was in this class, because he thought that this was a human class.
And so we come to the main problem of this world – the hostility between humans and furs.
The teacher did not like these talks at all. She must have repeated again and again that they should not divide the school to humans' and furs' classes. To let Kass know this, she led Aki to her new place right in front of him. The teacher ordered Kass to help the little wolf move around the school and also to help her with the book bag as well. Poor Kass, he did not like that at all, but he said the only thing that he could.
"Yes, miss."
A boy with a black hair bent over the desk. From behind he whispered into Kass’ ear that this is what he calls dog-sitting and smiled mischievously on it. It was Luke, Kass’ best friend.
"Just shut up Luke!" - Kass said back to him angry about the whole thing.
This whole took some time from the lesson. The teacher wanted to lose no more time and ordered the class to open their e-book readers and run the title "Energy – what you need to know". This was one of the hardest lessons and a very important one too. Just as the teacher wanted to begin, suddenly they could hear a cracking noise and everything turned dark.
The teacher just sunk her look and asked herself angrily - "How can I teach about something that we don't even have?"
If only she would know how right she was. The whole COHAF was slowly running out of energy. Everyone knew that, but only few on both sides knew how bad it really was. Many world resources were wasted years ago. Now there was less trees and green stuff than ever before and the weather was more dangerous and wilder than expected. The temperatures were about three degrees lower around the world. It was maybe not much you think, but it could be felt. And for the last but not least, there was no oil, so no chemicals, no cheap plastic materials, no cheap energy, no nothing… So the consume of "green" electric energy rapidly increased. The many building's glass-made surfaces were turned into photovoltaic cells, but even that was not enough to still the hunger of this world! Important buildings like hospitals or schools needed far more than that to power all their equipment. Small devices, like cellphones or tablets were powered by "Static". Static meant that the device could be recharged instantly, just by rubbing the device's back cover for a while. With as much fluffy fur around to produce static electricity, this was an easy and very effective way. However, the production was affected in a great way as well. Without the, in the past so widely produced and used, plastics was everything different. The only plastics were the eco-plastics, or bio-plastics mostly made from special grass starch and lactic acid. They were a good replacement, but not as far as cheap and easy to produce as the original. They were literally "gold worth"! The gold itself lost its worth, now its only use was in electro-technical industry. Wearing a gold necklace around the neck here was like wearing wires with a switch on your neck. And to the last, the money did not exist anymore too. It was replaced by EV. The Energy Value, EV for short, was something like a bank account, but the numbers did not mean money, but were showing how much energy you had left to disposal. There was not much energy left in this world, so it became very valuable. It was as if one would go shopping with batteries.
The scientists on both sides tried to solve the energy problem, but without a bigger success for now. Therefore, it must have been done some radical decisions and changes in the society. One of those changes hit the education system, with putting subjects like Technology, Science and for all Energy – the ways to create and save it, in front of all the others in hope to at least slow down the disaster. More and more often it came to conflicts between humans and furs, because each side blamed the other for consuming too much energy. The worst thing was, that the hostility has fallen down onto the youngest ones as well. Like in COHAF primary school. However, right now, our two heroes had other problems than just with each other.
Kass was "dog-sitting" Aki, how he called it, for more than a week and his friends never missed a chance for a joke on his costs. Aki tried not to annoy Kass too much and tried to spend the time with other furs, but the most recesses she spend alone, watching the others from the wheelchair. It was not as if she could not really walk, but because of her disease, it was too hard for her to walk for a longer time. She would just get too exhausted. The worst was the heavy cough followed by sharp ache in her chest. Few weeks ago, she started to cough out blood and each week it became more and more! Even Kass noticed that something was not right, but he did not really care about. She was still a furry and he was a human, so why should he care? The real truth was, that he caught himself blushing a bit when Aki touched his hand and said thanks when he lifted the book that fell her down. Whenever he looked into her icy blue eyes, memories started to come up in his mind, things too painful to him. Kass did not want this and so he did not want Aki close to him.
The whole situation escalated by the half-year test. Everyone was busy with the test while Kass finished it as first as usually. He was not only a sports type, but was pretty smart as well. He brought the test to the teacher and got back to his place while Aki was still busy with the test. Sitting in front of him and wagging her tail, she did not notice that she hit Kass in his nose with it. He immediately jumped up ready to yell at her, how she dared to, when Aki turned around. She looked at him with her beautiful icy blue eyes, wondering what was wrong. Suddenly, Kass stood there absolutely helpless against those eyes of hers. He had again that sad look in his golden eyes. The only thing that he could do was to close his eyes and turn his face away with a painful expression. Aki just called out his name silently, asking what was wrong, when the cough hit her again, but this time very hard! In last moment she put her paw in front of her mouth, because with the cough came out a lot of blood. Her whole paw was bloody. A small string of blood came down her mouth and few drops hit even the floor. The teacher immediately came to Aki asking for explanation when she saw her bloody paw and mouth. Aki talked herself out by saying that she just bite in her tongue, so it was not a big deal. The teacher was not sure about that, but what else she could do. She ordered Kass to take Aki to the bathroom as he was still the only one who finished the test already. At first he protested, because the furball could still go by herself, but then the teacher told him that the bathroom for this floor was out of order because of the heavy energy failure. Kass just looked up at the flashing light then took Aki and left the class without a word.
The two walked down the long empty corridor sunk in thoughts. Well, at last Kass walked, Aki sat in her wheelchair and tried to figure out what was bothering Kass so much every time he looked at her. She had her idea what could it be, but she was not sure about it. A white-haired human with golden eyes like Kass was pretty much out of the ordinary. From the chats among her new classmates, Aki could understand that Kass’ father was some kind of chief in the ERF - The Energy Research Facility, so his father was definitely a human and a pretty rich one too. Even if could humans have white hair, there was no way how they could get to golden eyes! Only if his father would marry a... No way! This was accepted only by lower classes under LV5, so how could it be? Thousands of questions shot Aki through her mind and she was right.
The citizens of COHAF were divided into classes after how much EV they owned. There were together nine classes, or better levels. The richest ones belonged to the highest LV9 class; they were mostly humans as only few furs got so far. Down until LV5 was still the nobility. The LV4 was the middle-class; they had enough EV to live comfortably, but were far away from the LV5. And then were here the LV3 and lower, which had just enough EV to get by. They were even allowed to use books and paper for writing when their EV sunk under then thousand. This was Aki’s case too.
The little wolf was not really sure about Kass, she even started to think that Kass had a health upgrade, but this was a dead end. It was often used to replace damaged body parts with artificial ones, but this was allowed only for the exterior of each one. Fingers or whole arm, skin or fur and even crushed bones were replaced. This was not allowed for the interior. That meant all organs, not to mention to upgrade parts as heart, eyes or even brain! Something like this was strictly forbidden for everyone, no matter to which class you belonged to. The fear of misusing this by one of the sides was too big. However, there were few attempts with this, but when it was discovered, the actors were sat to jail for the rest of their lives and the so-called "creatures" were eliminated. Even if they tried to hide, they could be easy discovered. To support the artificial organ with energy, it was necessary to add carbon in a special form to the blood and so the blood became black instead of red. The carbonic cells were binding to the neural structure of the body and increasing the body's own electrical impulses, that it could interact with and support the artificial organ. The cons were the change in the tissue color of the body and the increased sensitivity.
Aki could continue in wilder and wilder thoughts, but it was of no use. She knew that the easiest way to find out was to ask Kass directly. What was bothering him and why was he so irritated when she was with him? It was definitely not because she was a furry!
Suddenly, the wheelchair held on. In front of them was the main staircase, which connected every part of the school. The staircase was already a routine for the two. While Kass brought down the wheelchair, Aki walked down the staircase step by step supporting herself by the railing. It has not escaped Kass’ attention that each time it took her a bit longer than before and each time she was more exhausted. Finally, the last stair was done. Aki just sat down in her wheelchair breathing heavy and after few last steps, they finally reached the bathroom.
Aki opened the door and walked in to the basin to wash her mouth and paw. Kass waited outside by the wheelchair next to the opened door. When Aki was done, she stopped the water and asked Kass if he could help her to walk out of there, because she was completely exhausted. Aki got hold on one of Kass’ arms and the two walked to the wheelchair by the door. As she made a step, she dragged Kass accidentally by his arm and they both lost balance and Aki fell on the ground. In last moment Kass supported himself with his hand to not to fall on top of her, but his nose landed softly in Aki’s warm chest fur. The fur was unbelievably soft and the scent was so beautiful! Kass’ eyes were wide opened and tears could be seen in them. He was like frozen, unable to move, with his thoughts far in his past.
This feeling, this scent, it was so familiar to Kass, but where from? His childhood, there he knew it from. This voice, the female voice calling his name...
"Mom...!" - it was the only thing he was able to say.
In his thoughts, he was reaching out his hand after the female, but she was getting more and more away from him, vanishing in the darkness.
"Kass...Kass..." - Aki repeated calling his name until he has shown some reaction.
She softly asked if he was all right. He turned his head towards her still a bit confused. Then their eyes met. The flaming golden of Kass’ eyes collided with Aki’s icy blue! Only at this point Kass’ mind wandered back to reality and he was never so close to Aki before. Only millimeters separated him from her silky black nose. He immediately jumped backwards and landed on his back as if he would have seen a ghost. Aki asked him again if he was all right while she was still laying on the ground. After seeing this, she definitely wanted to know what was bothering Kass, so she decided to ask. Why was he so cold to her and had it something to do with his mom?
This was it, this was too much for Kass! He held it back until now, but this definitely crossed the line! Aki shall stop putting her snout in things she had no idea of, and she shall stop looking at him like that! Kass yelled! Everything was perfect until she came to his life! Kass took her by the collar, lifted her up, and yelled at her again that he hates her. Why she must came here, why she cannot just disappear? Tears started to roll down from his eyes dropping down to Aki’s white fur. Tears, so bitter, that they burned through her fur to her heart and left there a deep mark. Kass said that he hates all furs, that he hates her, but most of all hurt Aki when he said that he wants her to die! If only he would know that this wish can come true sooner than expected...
The bathroom door started to close slowly, as Aki’s paw got out of the way. She was still pinned to the wall by Kass as the door closed tight.
Only Aki’s silent whisper - "...Kass, please no..." - could be heard from the other side of the door. Unfortunately, this stayed not without a witness.
After the classes Kass did not lead Aki outside as usual. Instead he left the school earlier and went to the city park to get on other thoughts than on what happened. The whole day Aki stayed silent. Just a sad expression could be seen on her face. The innocent playful glance in her eyes was gone. She was not so sad since...her parents died when she was just a cub. No one really knew what happened. That day died many furs by an explosion proclaimed by the ruling class as a tragical coincident by doing some tests, but that was all what was known. Since then a good friend of her family was taking care of her.
Even Wuffy, the white furred and green-eyed wolf male who was taking care of Aki, has noticed that this was not just an ordinary argue between Aki and Kass as between a furry and a human. This was much more. Aki felt Kass’ pain and sorrow and this was hurting her more than anything Kass has said or done to her. She told Wuffy only about what Kass has said to her even if there was more to explain. The big wolf knew about Kass from Aki’s everyday talking after the school and he also knew that Kass was not just an ordinary human after his golden eyes. However, it were not Kass’ words what made Aki worried, it was the way he acted towards her. It was very different from towards other furs. With her, he was always sad and upset what made Aki sad, and that was not good for her health.
Talking about health in Aki’s chase was not the right expression. In fact, she was in a bad condition, well...the real truth was, that Aki was dying!
Wuffy gave all the EV necessary to get her the best vets from both sides, but there was not much they could do. She felt big pain by breathing and any strain just made it worse. When she tried to walk just for a while, she bit her fangs together and fell down on her knees with her paw pressed against her chest from the strong pain. Aki often supported herself with the other paw to not to fell on her nose, so exhausted she often was. When then the cough started as well, and the first droplets of blood came out of Aki’s mouth, Wuffy knew there was not much time left for his beloved little Aki. The vets from the Veterinary Medical Station, the best and the biggest furry hospital in the city, told him that she had only months to live, maybe less if she will keep exhausting herself like that! Her lifetime could increase up to one year or even more if she would stay in the medical station, but Aki did not like the idea.
She knew about her condition well. Wuffy never wanted to keep it secret from her and never had, but she was used to be outside in the huge garden around Wuffy’s house and play with her friends. It was a place where were no differences between the two sides. Humans, furs, everyone loved to sit down around Aki and listen to the beautiful stories she was always telling to the youngest ones as well as to everyone who wanted to listen. Those were the stories which Wuffy was telling her when she was just a cub. Well, she still was a cub; she was just twelve. Aki must have made a hard decision, but from her sight, there was nothing to choose between. She told Wuffy that she would like to stay the few months she had left with him and those she loved, and she even wanted to meet new friends in school rather than to stay a year in the medical station without them. And so Aki started to attend the COHAF primary school where she met Kass, and where their yet small adventure began.
The adventure continued next morning when they were supposed to get to school again. However, this morning did not start too good for Kass, because he overslept. The whole yesterday’s evening he was walking though the streets of COHAF sunk in thoughts and came home late in evening, making Niaa worried about him. Niaa was a servant in Kass’ family. She was a beautiful adult feline, a snow leopardess, with light hair and silver fur with dark rings on it. She was the only one who took care of Kass. His father was an important man in the ERF, so he was more in work than at home and then, he has never shown too much interest about Kass. The boy came more after his mother and that was the problem.
Kass’ mother died when he was young, even when she has promised him to stay with him forever, she vanished from his life. Since then was Kass as cold to all furs as the other humans. Even to Niaa, who was always nice to him, but this morning was everything different. Kass was silent the whole morning. Unable to look into Niaa’s eyes he always turned his head shamefully away, as if done something very bad. The snow leopardess wanted to know what was wrong, but he just answered that nothing was wrong and that she should let him be. She would, if he would not be already late to school. On this Kass stood up from the table and went to take his white jacket, then turned to the front door and walked out towards the school. In last moment Niaa grabbed his arm and stopped him to give him his e-book reader he forgot. The snow leopardess immediately stepped back, because she knew that Kass was always irritated by such a rude behaviour from her side, but now he took the e-book reader and her paws in his hands and let out a long slow breath.
With words - "Thanks, for everything, Niaa..." - while stroking the top side of her paw he said goodbye and left the house and started to walk towards the COHAF primary school.
Standing in the doorway, Niaa just fell on her knees and tears could be seen in her eyes. In some way, suddenly, she did not want to let him go. She could not get rid of the feeling that something bad is going to happen, that she has seen Kass for the very last time...
Mentioning the time, right now were all the other classmates of Kass going home from in front of the school for some reason; including Aki. Kass did not know this, so he hurried up to the school, shortening his way through the park as usual when he was late. In halfway there he could hear familiar voices coming out from behind a row of trees. At first he thought to hear his best friend Luke, but as he came closer to the large stone path behind the trees, he saw that it was not just Luke. In fact, more than the half of their class was present there. When Luke spotted Kass, he immediately waved his hand to greet him, suggesting him to get there. Kass was really wondering what all of them were doing there this late in the morning. Why were they not at school?
Luke told him, that the school was closed because of the yesterday’s incident, but Kass had no idea what was Luke talking about. All yesterday’s evening he was walking in the park, so he has not seen the news where was told that there was an explosion in the ERF last night. No one knew what happened, but since then almost the whole city stayed without energy; including the school! The teacher sent them back home from in front of the door and it seemed that the school will be closed for few days. Kass was worried if anyone was hurt by the explosion, because his father did not come home last night. Maybe he just must stayed there to help bring everything back online. Maybe...
Still, Kass could not understand why would anyone want to blow up the ERF where they tried to save the whole city from disaster. They were just trying to find a way to produce enough energy for everyone. In last year the EV costs have rapidly increased and there was less energy than any time before. Kass knew it, but that did not matter for him. Right now he was more curious about why were Luke and the others still there in the park when they could go home? Luke just wanted to tell him, when someone said that the furry was coming. Kass froze right there! The furry? Did they mean Aki? She was the last person he wanted to meet after yesterday, but there she was...
Straight down the wide stone path, sitting in her wheelchair she was coming closer, but has slowed down when she saw Kass in the middle of the crowd. Luke was smiling evilly as he saw Aki’s reaction when she spotted Kass. He turned to the crowd and put his hand on Kass’ shoulder telling to the others that he was not lying when he said that he saw Kass holding that furball by her neck pinned to the wall in the bathroom yesterday. And that now, he and Kass are going to teach her a lesson, so she will definitely understand that a furry has nothing to do in a human class!
This was just silly, there were no humans' or furs' classes at all, they just needed to blame someone for everything and in this case it was Aki, the only furry in the class.
Everyone was screaming words like - "Give it to her!" - or - "Show her where her place is!"
Kass could not believe his eyes and ears. Even the girls were saying those things! He always thought that they were better than the furs, just like his father always told him, but now he was not so sure who was the real beast. All this because of what Luke saw in the school, or better what Luke thought he saw. Kass could not bear this anymore! He told that Luke was wrong. Yes, he held Aki by her neck and pinned to the wall, that was true. Even, that he yelled at her those things like he hates her, he do not wants her to be here, even that he wants her to die; but that was for a different reason. Sure not because she was a furry. Sure, he did not like the furs as Luke and friends. He never had a problem with all those beatings and argues with furs or with other humans when they hurt him or his friends, but he did that to Aki because she hit a sensitive string of his. She stuck her snout in things she had no right to, but that was all!
Everyone became silent. They could not believe what they just heard from Kass, especially Luke. He was mocking Kass to stop joking, then Luke took out a pocketknife and handed it over to Kass. Smiling evilly, Luke pointed the knife with Kass’ hand towards Aki, who was still sitting in her wheelchair. He said that Kass did not need to be worried, that they will not hurt her...much.
Everyone started to call those things again, like - "Yeah Luke, yeah Kass, let the fur fly!" - or like - "Let us see the colour of her blood!"
On this it went cold down Kass’ spine. This was not funny anymore; they had no idea about what they were going to do! Kass wanted to stop Luke before anything could happen. He slowly gave the knife back to Luke saying that he will not hurt Aki just because she was a furry. How can they want to hurt a sick furry in a wheelchair? He could not believe what his best friend wanted to do. Kass did not recognize Luke anymore. Kass took few steps backwards, so now he stood between Luke and Aki with stretched hands, trying to persuade Luke to let this be. He tried to persuade him that this poor furry was not worth such problems, but this made Luke just angrier than he already was.
"The only problem here is such a coward like you!" - Luke said and grabbed Kass by the collar of his jacket.
On the beginning, Aki had no idea what was going on. Only as they started to yell and Luke put out the pocketknife and pointed it towards her, she understood what was going on. Kass’ anger from yesterday was still in her fresh memory and his words put fear in her heart. As she held on, unable to move and scared to death, she just waited for what will happen next. Aki could not believe her icy blue eyes when Kass stood between her and the cold blade, but Kass should not have done that.
In next moment, Luke let go of Kass’ jacket and took few steps backwards, but the knife was not in his hand anymore! Luke was surprised as well as Kass. Where has the knife disappeared to? Luke looked at his hand, but the only thing he saw, was some warm red coloured liquid.
"What the...blood?" - said Luke silent and his eyes stayed wide open.
It was like awakening from a bad dream into a nightmare, because the missing knife stuck out from Kass’ chest, but how? Luke could not remind himself to hurt his best friend, but exactly that have happened! As Kass fell on his knees, everyone understood what was happening there. Luke started to shiver and step backwards more and more. Everyone started to run away in fear and panic! Everyone, except Aki, who was still sitting there in her wheelchair in the distance and was watching all this.
Kass fell on his right side on the ground when Aki started to call out his name and that someone must call a vet! Unfortunately, there was no one else anymore, the two, Kass and Aki, stayed in the park all alone. Aki broke out in tears. Forgetting her disease and ignoring the pain she stood up from the wheelchair and ran to Kass as fast as she could. After a while, her legs gave away and she fell hard on her nose just few meters away from the boy completely exhausted. The heavy cough started again. The blood was pulling out of her mouth as from Kass’ wound, but she did not care, she just wanted to get to Kass! She crawled on all four to him and turned him on his back to see his wound. The knife still stuck out of his chest, so Aki just pressed her paw around the wound to slow down the bleeding. She did not take out the knife, because Kass could bleed out of the wound.
She was completely exhausted from the run and was almost unable to breathe from the sharp pain, but she kept her paw in place and pressed even more against the wound! On this Kass finally showed some reaction. He could hardly talk and even harder breathe, but he was still alive, yet. Fortunately, Wuffy gave Aki a cell phone to call him to bring her home from the school when Kass will not want to, so she could call help with it. Aki was firmly decided to save Kass' life, even if she knew that this can cost her own, but that was the last thing she cared about right now.
Kass would never think that it would be actually her, who would give everything she had to save him. Not after what he did to her. It was hard for him to speak, but he wanted to know.
"Why are you...helping me after...all that?" - he asked with a weak voice.
Aki told him, that she did not care about what he has said or has done to her. They were friends even if they have never told it to each other. They had more common than the could tell, besides Aki lost so much already, there was no way that she would let him die as well! Then, as the two looked at each other, their eyes met again. Tears begun to run down from Aki’s icy blue eyes and one of them dropped down on Kass’ forehead and set all the memories, he has suppressed for so long, free. These were the memories on the time spent with his mother before she passed away. As Aki could find out from all the time with him, Kass’ mom was a furry. Specifically, she was a wolf like Aki. Her fur was white and soft as a fresh fallen snow, in her beautiful golden eyes was the warmest look you have ever seen and her voice was like the sweetest melody for Kass. Any time Kass saw Aki, he thought on his mother and on how much he was missing her. This was hurting him so much, that he could not tolerate Aki close to him. Yet, he had so many wonderful memories on the time with his mother, how could he had forgotten them? Fortunately, Aki came to his life to help him to remember and he was more than thankful to her for that.
Tears could be seen in Kass’ golden eyes while he was looking at Aki and with words - "...you are...beautiful, can you...forgive me..." - those eyes closed tight.
The little white wolf was trying to wake Kass up, but the boy was not answering her anymore. Soon the effort became too much for Aki as well and she collapsed down on the ground next to the young boy.
It could seem, that this is the point where everything had end, but in fact, the whole adventure just begins...
