Spring in My Step: Chapter 8

After the long downtime, a good story is just what we need!

“Definitely me!" I said. I stood up with Nyanni in my arms. Erin was just about to finish setting the table as we walked into the dining room. The table was just big enough for six people, which was more than enough room for us humans and the bunnies. There was a bench seat against the wall arranged for the rabbits on one side of the table with three more chairs placed at the remaining three sides.

As promised, the carrot soup was laid out for the hares in bowls with child sized spoons and the beef stew was presented for the humans. What happened next came as a bit of a shock to me and especially Nyanni. While I never considered myself to to be too religious, and Nyanni, having her own beliefs that I still haven't yet fully understood, we were slightly surprised that Lizzy would start the meal off with a typical christian prayer. Lizzy held hands with Erin in her right hand and He'ki in her left. Along with the three other hares they all bowed their head in prayer. Me and Nyanni while still hesitant, followed suit only long enough to open our eyes slightly to see the sincerity of the others as they participated in what I thought would be against the philosophy of the rabbits as I understood them.

“Dear Lord." Lizzy prayed, “May you bless our humble gathering here today as we welcome two new members into our family. We ask that you ensure their safety as they journey through such troubling times and mark their path with peace and tranquility. We would also like to thank you for the bountiful feast you have bestowed upon us that we are blessed to share with our new guests. Praise be unto thee, Amen."

After the prayer everyone took a seat. I took a chair next to the bench and naturally Nyanni sat on the bench closest to me. Likewise He'ki took a post next to Lizzy with the other Hares in the middle.

I figured that this dinner would be filled with getting-to-know-you conversation to which I was nervous to get into to say the least. Clearly the only thing about me worth mentioning at this get together is the time I have spent with Nyanni and the 'things' we have done together. Though at face value it appeared that Lizzy and Erin, having already known our plight, would be expecting to hear about it, I still was not ready to share. Perhaps this was due to my own inability to condone my own actions. Furthermore I wasn't too sure what she already knew about us. When I arrived at the cabin and Nyanni was explaining our story to He'ki, I didn't enter the scene until the end of the conversation. He'ki has also at some point told our story to Lizzy, I'm sure. So how much did she already know? At this point I had come to the conclusion that no matter what she already knew, she would accept us. After all, she already made the comment about Nyanni being an expecting mother, so she already knows how far we have taken our relationship. Either way, this was going to be a conversation I had never though I would have to prepare for.

All the rabbits in the group dove right into their carrot soup except for Nyanni. She looked up at me with guilt filled eyes as though she didn't deserve it. I pet her head and drew her ears back, “Whats the matter?" I asked.

“I don't know..." she muttered, piddling with her child sized spoon. I figured I'd solve this mystery later, but for now, hunger was top priority. I took the biggest spoon full of what was to be the first real cooked food I had eaten since before I was held captive. It ignited regions of my tongue I forgot I had. I don't think she was the best cook, but at that point I didn't care. The lack of any real protein for such a long time made this the best stew I had ever tasted.

Sadly, while my tongue was at a proverbial amusement park, Nyanni was merely stirring her carrot soup. Seeing her like that made my heart skip a beat. I felt I was being cruel, “How dare I enjoy myself while she suffers from some unseen torment?" I thought.

Meanwhile He'Ki wouldn't keep her mouth shut. She was going on and on about her heroing story of escape from her home burrow. Her higher morals and ethical code prevented her from doing whatever it was her fellow rabbits at that burrow where doing. Then she'd back it up with some ideological perspective of hers that made her seem like the Mother Theresa of rabbits. I can't say I was paying too much attention to what she was saying as I was far more concerned with what Nyanni was feeling.

“And that's when I was forced to trip our Heiress with a stick!" He'Ki shouted abruptly. The other rabbits were aghast that she had the audacity for such a stunt. This left me with the chore of piecing together the bits I did hear together to try to understand why that was the big deal... or was it the punch line of a joke?

“He'Ki, I thought that your Heiress was yelling at the guards in the other room? When did you get the chance to trip her again?" Trista inquired.

“Oh ya, well she had came back to the main chamber and that's when I did it!"

Good thing I didn't pay attention, her story obviously didn't make sense. Trista looked at the bunny to her left and gave a slight shrug. Lizzy interjected to break the tension.

“Okay, okay everyone, lets not get too serious now. Collen, your girl looks tired and you look pretty beat yourself, I'll have He'ki the hero show ya'll to your room while me and Erin clear the table." she smiled. Drat... I wanted seconds I thought, but at the same time she had a keen eye, I was tired and I figured Nyanni needed to get out of there too. Maybe it was a bit too much too fast for her.

“This way guys." Erin said as she gestured toward the stairs in the other room. I picked up Nyanni so as to be a gentlemen...I guess. I think that's how one would be a gentlemen to his bunny girlfriend at least. It felt right to do needless to say. Then we made our way up stairs behind Erin. Erin made a few brisk steps as she made it to the second door on the left. She opened the door without going inside and waved her arm inward. “Here you are!"

“Thank you, wheres the light switch?"

“Oh right here on the right."

The light emanated from the ceiling fan that promptly began to spin. This made Nyanni jump a bit in my arms. Something really had her on edge.

“When you wake up, the towels and wash rags are in the closet here across the hall and the bathroom is down the hall to the right." she instructed with a smile. Erin appeared to be excited me and Nyanni were going to be alone. As a guy, I tend to perceive things a bit more perverse than they may actually be, however, I would venture a guess to say Erin got off thinking about me and Nyanni being intimate. I found that a bit disgusting, even though I like to be intimate with Nyanni. Somehow the chain of logic in my mind absolved me of disgrace and made her out to be a sicko! Its hard to describe but I'm right for some reason!

I placed Nyanni on the bed and made my way to the door to close it. I slowly shut the door being sure not to crush Erin's toes. I wanted to make sure she felt unwelcome so she would just leave by filling the doorway with myself to create some artificial barrier between her and the room. Her smile was the last thing I could make out as the door finally came to a close. I turned to Nyanni to finally ask her what was the matter. “Nyanni, why didn't you eat, you know you have to, you're eating for two, or three? Not three though right?" I joked trying to ease the tense atmosphere. She just looked up at me with her eyes sagging low and watery and her bottom lip quivering. I rushed to the bed beside her and wrapped my left arm around her to tuck her in close.

“I don't deserve their hospitality..." She cried.

“Why not? You deserve whatever is coming to you baby..." I sad trying to console her. “Why don't you think you deserve it?"

“I just keep thinking about all those I left behind in the burrow just so I could get what I want. Its not fair to them. They still have to live their life in fear."

She made a good point, She spent her whole life living there and she surely had a few friends there that still have to live their life in support of that bitch. I guess getting a hot meal is the lap of luxury compared to where she comes from.

I couldn't stand to see her sad anymore. With the stroke of my hand I swiped away a tear from under her eye, although one would of swore I wiped away her sadness altogether. She looked back up at me with a smile that slowly transformed into a kiss. I crouched down to get to her level and put my hand behind her ears. In the moment I forgot myself and leaned toward her too far. Nyanni was already perched on her hind legs to reach me when suddenly she fell out of my hand and fell back on the pillow. I conjured an apology as fast as I could, but there was no need. She had landed on a pillow giggling. She reached her paws up towards me inviting me down to which I followed.

I put each of my forearms on the bed on each side of her to hold myself up with both hands interlocked behind her head. She was completely surrounded by me which only helped make her fell more relaxed. I could feel it in the way she tried desperately to put her arms around my neck.

Unfortunately, the best things in the world are often taken from us without warning. Such was the fate of that moment. The door open with the speed of an explosion along with all the sound thereof. Lizzy barged with with a rifle. Erin came in soon after her also brandishing the same style of weapon. Only once they dominated the room did He'Ki rear herself inside with a shit eatin' grin.

“Well I didn't believe it. And here I thought He'Ki was yankin my chain!" Lizzy spoke confidently. “And to think you were just about to do that in my house no less!"

“Whoa whoa whats the problem!?" I shouted.

“When she told me there was a guy out fuckin rabbits I thought she was full of it and I had to see for myself. Young man haven't you read The Bible!? Leviticus tells us that a man shall not lie with an animal as he lies with a woman." I was really not in the mood for a philosophical debate, especially against one as out-dated as that.

“Just do what your gonna do already Mother Theresa..." I scoffed.

“You got it kid" Was the last thing I heard her say before I heard, not a gun shot but the muffled sound of a tranquilizer.
