Spring in My Step: Chapter 9
Imported from SF2 with no description.
She hit me once in the neck while Erin took another shot at Nyanni. I guess figuring I was so much bigger, Lizzy and Erin both fired another shot at me. I looked down at Nyanni, and with the last bit of my strength I pushed myself away from her so not crush her before I finally lost my strength and crashed into the bed unconscious.
I started coming to in the back of a covered truck bed. A flash of light from street lamp zipped by through the window. I slowly raised my head to try to see outside. It was difficult as I hadn't fully regained my strength. The moment I raised my head, the truck jolted under me slamming the wheel well into my head. I let out a groan and lowered my head right in front of Nyanni who was laying in front of me with all four of her hands and legs all tied together. That’s when I realized that my legs were bound by the tailgate and my wrists were duck taped to each other.
Just then the window separating the cab from the truck bed slid open, “Just a few more minutes back there, We're almost there!” Lizz shouted over the roar of the motor. “Hope you enjoy you're new home! Hahahaha” she said laughing as she slammed the sliding window shut.
Nyanni was still knocked out. I flared my hands out as much as the duck tape would let me and cupped her head to protect it from the metal of the truck bed. Her face had an expression of fear even though she was deep asleep. I had no idea what Lizz had planned for us; if she was going to kill us and ditch us out in the woods or maybe taking us to a church camp to tell us about Jesus's plan for us? Even worse was the thought of her exposing our relationship to the world. Nyanni was a talking rabbit after all and I’m sure CNN would love to do 2 weeks worth of 24 hours news coverage of me and Nyanni.
The repeating flashes of lights streaking across the windows stopped a few minutes ago. The ride also became a lot rougher. I drew Nyanni closer to insulate her form the bouncing of the truck. The truck then came to a quick stop. Me and Nyanni slide to the front of the bed near the cab. Silence overtook the motor as what seemed like Lizz and Erin climbing out of the truck and walking toward the back.
Lizz opened the tailgate as Erin stood and watch holding He'Ki. “Alright you two, time to get out!” Lizz announced authoritatively. “Don't want to keep 'em waiting!”
“Where are we, what are you doing with us?” I asked as I tried to shield my eyes from the flashlight Lizz started pointing at me.
“You'll find out soon enough pervert! Now come here!” Lizz said. She then started tugging on a rope that I never realized was tied to my waist. I tried to hold onto Nyanni as I was dragged back. I wasn't gonna let go of her this time. She yanked on me dragging me to the tail gate. She was definitely stronger than I thought, guess it comes with being a country girl. Erin set He'Ki down on the ground then helped me sit up. Keeping my forearms around Nyanni I looked up. Lizz lit up the forest behind the truck with flood lights. The light didn't penetrate very far, as though the forest intended to keep secrets. We were in a small clearing along a trail in the woods. Nothing about this place was recognizable to me. Suddenly, after taking a deep breathe Lizz shouted into the forest, “We're here!”
“Oh for fuck sake.... you've got to be kidding me...” I thought, as what stepped out of the forest was my worst fear. The all too familiar rabbits guards from the burrow were slowly creeping out of the foliage. All told 6 of them filled the clearing. They were small which only served to deceive those who would otherwise dismiss them as harmless. They were hardly unarmed as well. Each carried with them a human sized dagger mounted on a small chain that wrapped around their body to form an X on their back and chest.
Once they were in position they stood up on there in formation. Not too far behind of course was the Priestess. She came out of the forest wielding a staff with some sort of gem on the top, perhaps for aesthetics or more realistically to help her walk on two feet. More surprisingly however, the Abbess herself made her entrance. She was accompanied by two more guards hoping just behind her.
“Here are the two you wanted your Excellency.” He'Ki announced. “I trust everything is in order? Two fugitives in exchange for my citizenship to be re-instated.”
The abbess gave a nod to the Priestess who then shot a look at the guard closest to her and gave it a nod. The guard hoped over to He'Ki and with no hesitation quickly unsheathed its dagger and used to blunt end on He'ki's head. He'ki was knocked out without a single word uttered. A demonstration of the power the Abbess enjoyed over her people.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Lizz exclaimed. She rushed to He'ki's side and knelled on the ground. Reaching down with both hands she picked up He'Ki and cradled her in her arms. “Erin what are you waiting for get the gun out of the truck!” She commanded.
Erin quickly reached in the glove compartment, and with an outstretched arm attempted to point the gun at the Abbess. Before she could even aim the weapon it was deflected out of her hand by a thrown dagger.
“There will be no need of that here. “The Abbess spoke. “He'Ki is guilty of treason so vial that a single act will not be enough to warrant forgiveness.”
“What did she ever do to you?!” Lizz cried. Still cradling He'Ki's slowly dieing body in her arms.
“Do you believe you are among those worthy to question her will human!?” The priestess fired back.
“Its OK holy one.” The Abbess said, “Rest assured that you will be rewarded for your assistance in the return of these two.” As she said she swung her arm towards the guard on her left who then hopped to Lizz and gave her a small gold ingot. Lizz only looked at it in shock as though gold could ever replace a life. But it appeared she didn't really have a choice in the matter. So not to escalate matters further she took the gold with tear filled eyes. “Now, bring those two.” The Abbess demanded.
“Fuck you bitch! I ain't going anywhere with you!” I hollered. Standing up from the tailgate of the truck still holding Nyanni in my still bound hands.
“SEIZE HIM, NOW!” The Abbess exclaimed. With that I decided to make a run for it. If I could get enough distance between me and them then I could untie myself and try to get back to safety. I could try to find Lizz's house and find my car, only this time drive west until I ran out of gas. I would make a point never to come anywhere near this town again.
Unfortunately for me, all those plans would be for not. I failed to realize that the rope Lizz used to drag me out of the truck was also securely fastened to one of the tie down points in the truck. I made it all of 10 feet before I was jerked back on my ass.
“Are you finished human?” The Abbess said giggling to herself. “Humans make such terrible and insubordinate pets. Drag them if you have to.” She instructed.
If all else fails I was going to at least protest peacefully. I wanted to make them work for every inch of the way back to the burrow and drag me back. But even that idea was mutilated by the cold steel ready to pierce my neck. “Well, walking it is then.” I thought.
After a two hour hike through the woods and hills in the dark, the all too familiar tree topped a hill from this new vantage point. I wasn't looking forward to the idea of crawling down that narrow hole again. But as we kept walking I soon found that we weren't going that route. We were lead to a small opening in the side of the hill with a culvert dug into the side. It was barely tall enough for the Abbess to walk through but I would have to crouch to get in. We came upon a gate made of re-bar that one of the guards unlocked with key and we were shuffled inside.
This was a part of the burrow I had never seen nor knew existed. I looked at Nyanni as I carried her through the chambers with a looked I hoped she understood as, “Where the hell are we?” She wouldn't speak though for fear or reprisal or simply that she didn't know either. This wasn't the damp mud encased walls of the burrow I remembered. There were concrete walls and electricity in this part of the burrow. Glowing yellow lights illuminated the hallways and wooden doors made out of pallets lined the hallway. We passed on door on the right and then entered the following room. This room was also fully light with concrete walls all around. As soon as we entered on the right there was a stainless steel table about one foot off the ground with a small pillow on it. On the right of the table suspended from the ceiling via a cable and pulley was a cage that guessed was intended for Nyanni. And on the wall opposed to the table was what seemed to be a one-way mirror. Florescent lights flooded the room with white light as if were some kind of surgical room.
“Get him on the table and strap him down. He won't be leaving us so easily this time.” The Abbess said. She then made her exit as the guards insisted with their daggers that I get on the table and lay down peacefully. Nyanni was taken from me and tossed in the cage that was lowered to ground level then raised three feet in the air.
My waste of strapped down with a heavy duty leather strap. My hands and legs were bound in cuffs that were connected to wires that were then connected to wenches under the table. The wenches were tightened so I had very little freedom of movement. After they were confident that me and Nyanni were secure, the guards left the room.
“Nyanni, What do you suppose they are going to do with us now? Why didn't they just kill us on the spot?” I asked in a calm voice. I didn't want to get her more upset than she already was.
“I don't know... I had no idea this part of the burrow existed. I don't know why were are here at all Collin...” She said with a hint of sadness. I could barely see her since the floor of the cage obstructed my view of her. She didn't come to the edge of her cage so I could see her so I could only imagine the anxiety and sorrow and confusion that must be overwhelming her now. I decided to let it rest, and to let her rest. I didn't bring it up the rest of the night. I hoped she slept but if she was like me, she didn't..
