Lover from the Dark Chapter 4 Rough Draft
Dreams and reality mix and blend.
Sam woke up, rising sharply in bed, covered in sweat again. Was he ever gonna get a good night's sleep? No sun poked through the blinds of his window to the left. ' it must be night still,' he thought. Sam threw back the covers to reveal he was naked again. What the hell, he didn't sleep nude this often, even though it was always relaxing when he did. Getting out of bed, Sam searched the small room for a pair of boxers to wear. There were none on the floor and upon inspection of his closet and dresser, apparently he was a nudist because there were no cloths at all in his room. Feeling the fangs of anxiety, Sam grabbed one of the many blankets he slept with and wrapped it around his thin frame. The room started to feel claustrophobic as Sam with one hand keeping the blanket around him, twisted the door knob.
To Sam's immense horror the door did nothing as the walls, floor and roof blew over flat in empty void. The universe laid bare as the cosmos swirled and shifted. Celestial bodies in their infinity, revealed themselves to Sam. Exhilaration gave way to crushing anxiety, as the human stood before the abyss. He could feel it, the eyes of a hunter out in the dark. Sam couldn't see it as he turned around, simultaneously on solid ground, but afloat in space. The vast, empty vista of reality an unending existence, but all unreachable in it's current state. Sam creeped along the invisible floor, clutching the blanket tightly. He called out "hello," but only heard an echo of his own voice in response. Sam thought it was strange to hear his own voice in space, but it was also weird that he could breath. "This has to be a dream," he said under his breath as a comet flew by. The icy rock rotates as it's momentum takes it further near a distant star system.
" Beautiful, isn't it," a voice from behind. The voice. Sam whips around to see the man he danced with earlier that night standing a distance away from him. Sam's heart skips a beat, pulse quickens and anxiety rises. 'Stay calm', he thought, 'nothing here can hurt me. Why not play along?'
" It is," Sam barely wheezed out.
" Are you sure nothing can't hurt you here?" This made Sam pause. ' Can he hear my thoughts?' " Yes I can human."
Sam took a breath, while the demon disguised as a beautiful tan skinned man stood their in the void with him. In a moment of confidence, Sam grew bold and pointed a thin finger at the thing. " What the hell are you, what is this place and why are you you tormenting me," Sam's face flushed red from the outburst of questions. The other man only grinned like the devil he was.
"Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to," the terrible being gestured to the stars, the cosmic debris and the void around them. " This my dear human is the infinite nothing. A place only visible by your kind in dreams. It is also where my kind came from," just then the man whose been haunting Sam in his dreams started a horrifying transformation. Hands became gigantic feathered wings as his face stretched and became serpentine. The legs played the most grotesque role, one with the sound of bones crunching, dissolved in to each other morphing to create an immense scaly tail. The monster was seven meters long with a wing span of sixteen meters. Sam fell backwards gazing at the snake like dragon before him. " You want to know who I am? I am Volti-Yig, son of Yig the Father of Serpents," The great beast bellowed.
In complete shock, Sam felt everything he knew about the world disintegrate in front of him. How were things like this possible? He knew this had to be a dream and he had to wake up. " You want to wake up," The eldritch thing asked with a voice that sounded like razors gliding on meat. " We Great Old Ones as you call us, are masters of dreams. I won't let you wake up until I'm satisfied answering your questions," The giant winged thing swooped around Sam with amazing grace and acrobatics. With ease it plucked the boy, still only covered by a loose blanket, using it's angular mouth to place Sam on his serpentine back. Sam screamed through this ordeal which made Volti-yig laugh. " If I wanted to eat you I would have done so already. Make sure you hold on Sam, I don't want to have to look for you in this tumultuous void."
Something about the Volti-Yig using Sam's name struck a chord. This encounter seemed to be going a lot more smoothly, although Sam had been chewed on both times so far. Was this what madness was like, unable to tell dream from reality and embracing the unknown the mind had to offer? This dream fantastic and unpredictable as it was, felt too lucid, too much of his waking consciousness was present. Sam made decisions and had to react here instead of the blurry movie like quality of his usual night fancies. Clutching feathers on the back of the gigantic serpent Sam replayed the genuine distress about being lost in space or how Volti-yig laughed about not eating him like Sam should feel silly for the fear of being devoured. The experience up and till now has been jarring to say the least Sam concluded, he was flying through the yawning cosmos on top of an alien dragon that can transform in to a beautiful dark skinned man. Somehow he thought reality had given up all hope on him or he may have won some sort of gay fantasy lottery. Then there was the whole biting thing and Sam did't quite know how he felt about that since it felt like hell at the time, but it was in a dream so maybe it didn't matter ?
On the back on the great serpent the stars began to blur, wisping around the pair as space and time merged together as if they were in a cosmic kaleidoscope. Every color Sam knew and some he didn't knew existed danced in indescribable patterns around them. Sam fell on his back in the fluffy feathers of Volti-Yig starring in absolute wonder and bliss, watching the euphoric spectacle. The way the colors melted in to each other, creating shapes that few have ever seen. " Where are we going," Sam shouted feeling incredible muscles shift under him as the draconian head turned to eye him.
" You'll know soon enough mortal, just enjoy the ride through the tear in space and time."
" Wait if this is a dream why do we need to travel anywhere. Couldn't we just be there now?"
" Well yes we could, but you were so peaceful enjoying the show I thought I'd let you relax. It is rare for humans to be shown the cosmos by one who knows it so well, like me." Sam frowned, why would this extra-dimensional entity care if he enjoyed himself at all, what was he gaining from it? Another question for the landfill of mysteries. How did Volti-Yig even get to Earth or anywhere across the universe? Was his race common or is he part of a select few powerful beings? The serpent laughed again, " So many questions, it's so delicious how you are trying to figure it all out. Don't worry all will be revealed in time, for it is the greatest teacher of all."
The celestial light show grew brighter and brighter, Sam eventually had to close his eyes as the light became blinding. Radiance gave way to pitch black darkness speckled by distant stars. Sam stood up to witness a planet lit by no sun with no moons or other satellites surrounding it. In the distance breathed the gaping maw of a black hole consuming all that got too close. " Here we are, my prison," the Great Old One sneered. With no warning Volti-Yig nosedived towards the barren rock. The movement was swift but Sam held on to his back feathers tightly. As they approached the surface a black, obsidian spire revealed itself. A thing with multiple facets and angles that seemed to shift and reform with no clear purpose. Sam starred at the quivering stone, but he could not focus his gaze upon it. His eyes blurred as he tried to determine the exact characteristics of the misshapen tower. Eventually Sam gave up trying to define the blasphemous architecture after deciding the thing was not a construct or concept of his mind. Wasn't this his dream though, yet Volti-Yig could plant images that he could look at but not fully grasp because Sam had no terrestrial equivalent. Sam gave out an exacerbated growl of frustration, balled his fists and with no real forced slammed them on the eldritch snake's back scales. " My dear Sam," the head turned to meet his eyes. " You are going to have start getting used to not fully comprehending everything around you."
" Why," Sam asked getting vexed that he was being talked down to.
" Our lives are intertwined now, so the barriers of reality are weak around you now. You will see things that you once thought of as 'normal' for what they truly are. your mind is now open to the cosmos for good or ill."
" Why me, I'm not special." Sam said hoping he was wrong.
" Your mind was already sensitive to the influence of beings like me and I needed to tether myself to a creature who already belonged on your world. You are a victim of circumstance, a shield against this spire. Sam it calls to me without you I would slip back here for all eternity."
Sam didn't know what to say to that, it was a lot to process for sure. A powerful creature was using him as some sort of reality anchor. It made Sam feel used, almost dirty. " What happens if I die, since it kinda seems like you are implying it would make me a target or more susceptible to whatever else that is around like you."
" My dear warm-blood, you will see things, terrible monstrosities and they will notice you because they will sense the tether between us. Do not for any moment despair, I will be your shadow like how you will be my crown as I make my return to your blue planet," Volti-Yig flew lazily yet elegantly around the top of the spire around the five pointed star.
" One, you still haven't answered my question and two, I will not be some sort of pet or object that you can carry around," Sam said with rising anger. The dream was becoming an annoyance, he needed to be real again, not trapped here in ethereal nothingness. The horror snapped it's head around twisting it's body so they were close, face to face.
" If you die, which is an eventuality, I will be dragged back to my putrid prison. However it is within my power to grant you and only you, my tether an abnormally long life with perks of a youthful physique and sound mind. When the times come do as I say and we will have no trouble," the scaly face hissed. " I will need time to regain my strength and create a plan. Human, Sam I am not without reason. Your mortal lives are short, a speck of sand compared to the ocean bed of a life like mine. I like you Sam, if you cooperate you will know ecstasy beyond imagining." Before Sam could reply he felt short of breath and everything started to dissolve around him. Volti-Yig himself started to melt, creating a truly gruesome visage. The monster's body gave way, splitting apart like goo in a lava lamp. Sam found himself falling at an alarming rate, past the incoherent spire and towards the corpse of a planet. He feared the worst as Sam braced himself for the impact that would kill any human.
Sam shot up again in a cold sweat. The room was pitch black, eyes blurry from deep sleep. Sam reached out with his right hand, fumbling for his cell phone. He found the plastic square on his nightstand, clicking the screen to life to see it was six O' eight in the morning. Pretty early he thought as he felt something worm it's way on his bad. In Darkness two glowing yellow slit eyes stared at him from the foot of the bed. " Good morning Sam," said the voice that sounded like razors sliding on raw meat.
