Part 10b: Tokyo, Japan (Snow & Radar)

~Meanwhile~

Outside the plane, Radar did meet up with Snow, and he looked at Sam. “Just go to the first place I told you. Tell them the order I gave you. She’ll love it, I promise. But I think I have someone else wanting my company,” he said, waving Sam off and heading towards Snow. But apparently, Ice hadn’t gone too far and he spoke up, “Sam, I’ll tag along with you so they can talk.”

Radar was grateful that the others were going to give them some space. He didn’t know any of them before the flight that morning, but he could see the easy camaraderie that they had with one another, and he felt as though he and Ace had both been accepted into that almost immediately. It was the kind of thing he had seen time and again in the military. Units of mixed species bonding rapidly through what most people simply pass off as ‘brothers in arms’. There was competition, even friendly jostling back and forth to establish dominance or everyone’s ‘place’, and then everything was good.

As the others moved off, he stepped toward the snow leopard who had stood to the side, waiting. “Hey. I’m Katsu,” he gave a little wave and then extended his hand. “Katsu Itou...but I guess most people in our group will refer to me as Radar.”

“Snow,” she purred, taking his hand in her paw. “More accurately, Adelina Albu, better known as Snow. And I kinda prefer Snow. Besides being a snow leopard, I grew up in the cold and snow, and trained in it. Growing up in Romania does that to a body.” She gave a nod to the others as they headed off. “So what do you feel like grabbing to eat?”

His fingers closed around hers and he held it, listening to what she had to say. Some silly romantic part of him was so intoxicated with her that he wanted to lift her paw to his lips and kiss it, but he wasn’t sure that was appropriate for having just met her. “I’ll call you Snow then, though Adelina is a beautiful name.” He released her hand and turned to glance at the others, “I grew up here in Japan, though in one of the cities in the western part of the country. My favorite dish was always Okonomiyaki… uh… It’s like Japanese Pizza. If you haven’t tried it, you have to. Bread and cabbage topped with just about anything you want from beef to seafood and cheese.” He grinned, “There should be a place that prepares and sells it here...at least I hope. I would hate to have to take you to a Ramen restaurant on our...uh...” He paused, and chuckled. “On the first time we get to eat together.”

“Traditional Japanese Ramen is nothing to sneeze at. It's nothing like the dried packages sold in the States,” Snow said with a purr, then chuckled herself. “But I'm always open to trying new things, so let's see if there's a Japanese sorta-pizza shop around.”

“Oh I know, I’ve been in the US too long, but this stuff is awesome.” He turned and nodded toward the others, and fell into step with her as they headed toward the terminal. “So, I didn’t get a lot of time to talk to any of you guys. You’re what, some kind of mercenary band that helps out people in need?”

Snow smiled and shrugged. “Sorta. We’ve all done time in special ops for various countries - some loaned out to other countries for certain ops, like Chameleon. Through those loans, we met each other. We got together as we retired from our various SpecOps, and decided to do what regular ops or police couldn't. We don't require search warrants or other red tape that holds them back. So we can go in, do what we need to, and get out before the target knows we're onto their businesses.”

Katsu nodded slowly as she explained in what he assumed was an extremely condensed version of their origin as a group. “I can see the benefit of that. Sometimes things need to be done and Red Tape just gets in the way.” He glanced at the sky, breathed deeply, and then they were headed into the terminal. “I started out as a chopper pilot, flew some live combat and then medivac flights in the military. Got shot down and the crash fucked my left leg up pretty bad….then I needed a medivac.” He patted said leg before continuing, “What was left of it healed up pretty well, but after that I was done. I tried my hand at other stuff but….I like flying. So I went back to flight school, civilian, and airplanes this time. Here I am. I brushed wings with Ace a few times when in the military and she hooked me up with this job.”

“So you know about the crap we dealt with, at least peripherally. You might not have been on the same type of mission, until now, but red tape is red tape, no matter what the mission is,” Snow purred as they walked, looking for a place that had this 'Japanese pizza’. “So how old were you when you moved from Japan to the States?”

“Oh, I know red tape,” he mused. “Red Tape cost me my leg, but that’s a story for later.” He paused briefly inside the terminal to orient himself, then started moving off with her down the concourse, looking for the restaurant he knew was there. It wouldn’t be quite as good as the more dedicated places in town, but it would do. “I guess I should have said that it was the US Air Force that I was in. We moved when I was six, that was in the middle of the government unrest back in the 2020’s. Dad is an international trader and thought it was best if we moved somewhere more stable. Mom was already from the US, so her family was over there, but Dad’s was here. We came back for vacations and visits almost every year, sometimes multiple times.”

“When was the last time you were here?” Snow asked, her head slightly tilted to the side. She’d been in Japan a couple times, but always in and out, never really getting to see the countryside. But it was how she knew that real Ramen was nothing like Ramen in the States. She hadn't said much about herself, but where they were headed was close to home, so she’d be in a more natural habitat.

“Oh… Uh…” he thought for a moment and his eyes flicked up to the ceiling, then he nodded. “Six months or so. Michel had some kind of big deal going down with a Japanese firm and we flew in to pick them up, flew back to the states, and then flew them home again. Real posh stuff, highest class all the way, had to wear a fuckin suit when I was in the cockpit just in case I had to come out and get seen by them,” he grinned. “There’s the place,” he pointed, and threaded his way through the crowd, making sure he stayed beside her, even if she didn’t need him to. “I get to fly in maybe once a year now, unless I’m on vacation time and decide to stop over to see some relatives.”

“At least you know your family,” she said with a soft sigh. Following him to the restaurant, she shook her head. “Other than Tzar and his brothers, and Crypto, most of us don't have families. Either politically designed removal of families, or just random accidents. Our respective governments trained us as Spec Ops, but now… well, we do what we want to with the training. What our governments wouldn't let us do on their dimes. Rescue folks from traffickers. Stop arms dealers. Interrupt drug pipelines.”

“I’m sorry.” He hadn’t known and now he felt a bit like an ass for talking about his family with her. “I guess you have all become something of a family to one another. You guys do good work, I’m sure, and I’m looking forward to helping with this thing we’re on right now. Do you think that any of those governments are ever going to look for you and try and stop you?”

“That's where Chameleon works his magic. He’s been undercover all over the world, and has contacts in most countries. Take this case. The ship is in international waters. So no man’s land. Chameleon called his contacts in each country bordering where the ship is and alerted them to our imminent arrival.” She gave a wry shake of her head. “It gives each country plausible deniability if anything goes wrong. But it also gives them a chance to jump in on the action and work together when things go right.” A smile crossed her muzzle and a gleam entered her eyes. “So no, governments haven’t given us any trouble. But the cartels, arms dealers and human traffickers, on the other hand… They hate us. But they don't know who any of us are, so no way to put a bounty on any of us.”

“Ah ha…” Now he understood. He would have anticipated that some of the governments might not like their ‘rogue agents’ going around the globe. But they couldn’t really dispute the fact that they were trying to take down the really evil guys, and succeeding by the sound of it. “I can’t say it’s a bad thing to have the bad guys hate you.” He grinned, “So, uh… will you need a chopper pilot on this mission? I’m good, really good...not to brag of course.” They were in line for ordering and the last customer before them was finished. He stepped up, “Okonomiyaki 2-pai o d?zo. (Two servings of Okonomiyaki please, to go. - Japanese)” He thought for a moment, turned to Snow, “The base is bread with cabbage, usually stuffed with meat and topped with a variety of things, basically whatever you want, sauce, cheese, seafood, etc.”

Snow looked at him and grinned, letting out a soft ‘mew’ at him. “Well, I am a cat. So sashimi on it would be good, but only added at the end, so it’s still sashimi. But other than that, I’m pretty good with anything you want to add.” She nodded in regards to his other words, and after the order was placed, she moved to the side with him. “I’m not sure if we will, but I think you and Ace are coming from Tallinn to Haapsalu, right?”

“Haven’t heard much, but if I know Ace, and I like to think I do, she won’t want to miss out on the fun. So yeah, it’s a safe bet we’ll be going on to Haapsalu with you guys.” He smiled, her soft ‘mew’ before had made his heart flutter. “Of course, all you would have to do is say you wanted me along and I’d be there.” Perhaps that was too forward but he meant it. He really wanted to get to know her more.

Snow purred, her tail tip flicking behind her. “I’d love for you to be there,” she replied before slipping her paw into his hand again. “And if I read your mood right a few minutes ago, you felt bad for talking about your family. Don't feel bad that I lost mine. I’ve long since dealt with who took them from me. And the team.. they’re more like big brothers and overprotective cousins to me and Skorch.”

“Well I’m sure that you appreciate it, but I hope they know when to back off.” He gave her a wink and squeezed the paw that she had slipped into his own. “Cause I would hate to have to tangle with them if they thought I was getting too frisky with you. I figure that you’ll tell me if I am.” He paused and dropped his head, then brought his eyes back up to meet hers. “I kinda felt like an ass, talking about my family like that. Glad that I didn’t offend you or anything.”

Snow chuckled. “They do come in handy when some redneck asshole is hitting on me or Skorch when we go bar-, or club-, hopping. But when we go on missions, they're too focused on getting things done to get involved. Especially since others are starting to find their other halves. I mean Crypto’s known Cat for a while, from what I've heard. All of it online, I believe. But he's not letting her out of his sight, or arm’s length. Which seems to be helping her deal with things. And Sammy… I’ve never seen him lose his tongue like he did with Ace.”

“I noticed that about Cat. I’m glad she found someone...Ace and I have talked about her before. She needed someone who is good for her, and if Crypto is the one, then I’m fine with that. He seems like he really cares for her.” He chuckled, “Ace was, uh...well, not flustered, but certainly a little more frisky after she spoke with him, so I think the feeling was rather mutual.” A waiter from the kitchen appeared with their orders and slid them across in two sealed plastic containers, steam beading on the lids. A short exchange in Japanese later, and some money exchange hand-to-paw with the clerk. Soon enough they were walking back to the plane, Radar carrying the two containers, “So, you go out to redneck bars with the guys alot?” He grinned.

Snow nodded. “We were a bit worried about Crypto. Always on the computers or talking to Circa, his AI. Finding out that at least part of that time was spent talking to an actual female was refreshing. And meeting Cat… I must say, she isn't what most people would expect when they hear female hacker.” She grinned up at him, tilting her head. “Ever hear of the Broken Spoke?”

“Broken Spoke…” He paused, “That the place in Austin, Texas? I was stationed at Lackland in San Antonio for a while during Air Force training and some of my buddies and I went up to Austin on weekends. We dropped in there a few times at least. If you’re meaning somewhere else… uh, no.” He laughed, as they walked back down the concourse toward the exit leading to the plane.

Snow purr-laughed, “That's one of them. We have a few clubs with a motorcycle theme. But that one doubles as a western theme. All of us have done some time at the various bars we own. I’d just gotten back from the Spoke when Crypto asked for help on this mission.”

“Oh! So you guys actually own the Broken Spoke chain?” He was surprised, but thought it was pretty cool actually. “So, all of you help manage the locations then, now I have to go visit the ones close by when we fly in.” He paused, thinking as they walked, “It's funny, here we are, two groups of people, never really met before a day or two ago, and we're all flying halfway around the world on a mission that we believe needs to be accomplished. Just funny how life works.”

“Not only that, but it’s a mission that’s been 10 years in the making, from what I understand. And knowing Crypto, he’s not gonna let that bitch get away with what she’s done, even if justice is late in coming to her,” Snow said before returning to the prior topic. “Yeah, the brothers are the ‘legal’ owners, but we all own them. And our group is larger than most think because of it, but we’re the clean bikers out there. We’re the ones breaking the various pipelines. Every member of the club is ex special forces.”

“I still haven’t completely grasped everything going on with her and you guys. But then, I’m mostly the copilot around here, pilot when Ace is down.” He shrugged, “But I guess I better get up to speed if I’m gonna be hanging around you; which I would like to do.” His eyes flicked to hers and a smirk lit his face. “If the Snow-Cat can let me melt my way into her life, that is.”

Snow laughed softly, a rare smile on her face. She felt more relaxed around Radar than she had ever felt before, even with Ice or Skorch, her usual partners. She angled herself to move just a bit closer to him as they walked. “The Snow-Cat is very open to having you in her life,” she purred up at him as they neared the plane and then saw some police coming towards it. “Damn it,” she growled under her breath. Taking his hand, she urged him faster.

“Good,” he said, noting the way she came closer. He didn't have much time to enjoy that though, as she cursed and started pulling him forward. Radar didn’t have to be pulled along too fast, once he realized why she was hurrying in the first place. It wasn’t a common occurance to have a large group of police descend on your plane as quickly as these officers were, and that was going to cause all sorts of problems… in this instance it was going to be his job to try and sort it out.

As they came closer he called out, raising a hand, and drawing attention to himself. He introduced himself as the copilot and asked what he could do for them.
