It was supposed to go off without a hitch. My people would slip out of the plains and no one would be the wiser. Instead, I woke up to the screams and cries of the people I was sworn to protect reaching into the heavens. I stormed out of my tent to find the camp in chaos; people were screaming, scrambling to pick up whatever they could carry. I could hear the faint popping of gunfire echoing from the entrance. I dashed towards the gunfire to find most of the men, my staff and some women firing out the holes that lined the wall. I ran to the nearest fur I could find, yelling to into their ear.
"What the hell is going on?"
"They came out of nowhere! Laura spotted a few in the valley then out of nowhere it was like a fucking sea!" The Collie screamed back at me before firing out into the crowd of disfigured souls. I left her and moved down the line looking for someone on my staff, passing fur after fur until I ran into Aspean's large form.
"Oh hey boss." He said calmly, the roars coming from outside the wall unnerving those beside him. "Quite the clusterfuck isn't it." I nodded innocently, perplexed at how he could remain so calm in this kind of situation. "So what's the plan?"
A plan, I hadn't even wrapped my head around the massive horde of decaying bodies outside the wall. "Well...We need to get out of here."
"No shit."
"But those things are blocking the only way..."
"No shit."
"Are you going to criticize me or help me?"
The large wolf stopped shooting and stared at me for what felt like five minutes before giving his answer. "Both." He grinned at me and went back to firing out at the horde.
"Gee thanks for the help." I knew there was only one way this could end but the casualties would be enormous. "Asp, tell everyone to move away from the firing holes. I need you to round up as many people as you can and get them to the far end of the camp."
"What are you thinkin boss?"
"I'm going to open the gate and let them in..."
There are few moments in my life where I have seen Aspean afraid; this was one the first time. "Are you out of your fucking mind? Do you have any idea what will happen to you?"
"I know, but listen to me you need to lead everyone through the gate. It'll be a clusterfuck I know but it's the only way out. I'll try to lead as many of them away but there's a good chance that most of them will be going for you guys."
"Boss...I"
"Save it." I cut him off. "Now go. EVERYONE! FALL BACK!" They looked at me like I was insane and I probably was, but we needed to get out of the compound and I felt that it was my responsibility to make sure my people did. I could hear Aspean yelling out my insane plan up and down the line. The sound of gunfire died away, leaving only the bloodcurdling roars outside the walls that once protected us. Thousands of thoughts went through my mind as I made my ways towards the gate. It was a simple gate, reinforced steel that rolled back on four wheels to allow traders and people in and out, this time it was going to let the Horde in, help my people escape...and kill me. I grabbed the steel bar that we used to open and close the gate and started to tug it back. I could hear ice breaking underneath the wheels, claws scratching at the metal and my own heart beating in my chest. As the gate opened, I could see their paws stick through the opening, clawing at the metal in a vain attempt to reach out and grab my coat.
"Hehe, be patient boys and girls...your meal will arrive soon enough." A few more tugs and the gate was open, already the horde had poured into my little camp, taking me first. I was passed along waves of scarred furless bodies, finally being thrown to the ground. I didn't make any attempt to try and resist the paws that now tore away at my clothes. Inside the camp I could hear a large roar as my little group charged their way through the horde in an effort to escape. "God...let them make it. Let this be worth it.." The first claw sank deep into my abdomen ready to disembowel me, another had slashed me across the face and the rest were beginning to tear away at the skin on my legs. I heard a large crunch as someone bit down into my leg, I felt everything below my knee go numb before pain shot straight into my brain, I didn't dare to look down for fear of seeing my leg turned into shreds of flesh and instead I let the pain put me into an unconscious sleep the last thing I saw was a bright light that could have been the sun...then
Nothing
No pain
No tears
Only darkness
