“I thought this was just a trial? Hello? Hello, is there anyone listening to me? Anyone in here besides me?"
Kassandra shook her head as she paced the clean, clinically white room, set out with a bed that looked as if it had never been slept in. The medical college student was of average height but it was her green eyes that drew the most attention when it came to how she presented herself, always ensuring that her make-up was on point solely so that she could flutter her eyelashes just so. She was not simply hot for Kassandra had worked hard for her body and liked to show it off to some extent, even though she usually needed a drink or two down her throat before she really went out on a limb with something like that.
But she needed money, like so many students, and the medical trial for a vaccine had been too tempting, something that she had done before. It had meant that she would be able to afford the rest of her tuition for the year, not just the semester, and just who was going to pass up such an opportunity.
Frowning, she paced back and forth. If nothing else, she was bored and the tread of her bare feet kept track, in a way, of the passage of time. Yet she didn't want to show weakness if they were toying with her, for she was sure anyone running trials was bored out of their skulls doing the testing phase. Just what were they waiting for, for her to drop down dead clasping at her throat? She rolled her eyes. No, anything dangerous had already been screened out.
It was then, however, that everything changed.
Something shifted and she took a deep lungful of air, though her lungs expanded even more than usual, breasts heaving. Kassandra's eyes shot wide but she could no longer keep her feet as she tottered, grabbing at her body, her clothes too tight all of a sudden, even though she could not explain what was happening to her or why. Was it the vaccine? Was there something terribly wrong with it? Or was it the infection that she had been given?
Yet there was nothing that could stop her from changing as her body rumbled as if she had not eaten for so long and she did not know then how much more she would need to eat. Everything happened so quickly that she scarcely had a chance to claw at her body, striving to stop the inevitable, bursting out of her clothes as they strained and then, too abruptly, burst at the seams.
No...
She screeched in raw terror, a sick sweat clinging to her skin, hammering at the walls even as her fingers melded together, becoming hard and unwieldy, not a part of the human anatomy at all, but even that was taken from her – crudely and sharply. One moment, Kassandra was screaming and bellowing her fear and the next she was mute, a bellow of a moo rising from the back of her throat. That wasn't a human noise but Kassandra did not yet know that she was no longer human, the vessel of a trial that was, unfortunately, not going to be paying out any of their students who had enrolled. Animals didn't need money, after all...
And that was all that Kassandra would become as she grunted and mooed, falling to the floor and flailing as the bones of her legs ground together. Her pelvis simply wouldn't do where it was and rocked itself into a new alignment, her hips higher, her legs longer, the fat of her body spilling down and down and down. Gone was her shapely stomach, the muscle that she had worked so hard for, the round of her buttocks ballooning into the heft of what she would come to understand as being a heifer. Yet all she could do was cry, even the ability to let tears stream down her cheeks taken from her so cruelly, every last shred of her humanity torn free.
No... No. It couldn't be happening, shouldn't be happening – and yet it was. There was nothing she could do about it as her chest twanged with pain, hoof-like hands grabbing at her breasts, though they slipped away as if they had never existed. The flesh of the glorious, round orbs softened back into her body, her chest bulging out with the jutting of her breastbone, shoulders further back. Her head too had to re-set itself and, shortly, she couldn't even bring her hands to her chest or face, designed differently for standing rather than holding or grasping.
Whimpering, she shook her head and trembled, scooting back on her buttocks, even though they were not the buttocks, by any means, that she remembered. That had been a perfect butt, a functional one, one that she had been proud to work out with – and now it was gone. So much was gone but there could be no humiliation more final that the twist of a thick yet ropey tail shooting from the base of her spine. Kassandra would have been hard-pressed to tell just what the strange, pulling sensation was if she had not seen it worming its way down for herself, between her legs, though the thicker tuft of hair at the tip seemed useless in her horror for anything a human may have wanted for themselves.
Her hands though... Oh, those. They were no longer her hands and she trembled, sweating and glistening, studying them as if looking at how her fingers had changed would root her in a moment against all the odds. Of course, it was a futile endeavour even if one that helped her bear through it a little more, her fingers turning grey, although they were already a lumpy mess that looked nothing like they belonged on a hand or even attached to a wrist anymore. Her nails were no longer, joints shifting, her whole hand becoming solid while her wrist broke into separate joints, something animalistic and all the more terrifying for how it presented itself.
No... No, it could not be happening, had to be a nightmare... Her brain fogged over, making it difficult even to keep her mind straight, but she had to do something, try something, staggering to her feet. But she was on all fours and could not stabilise herself even as her arms lengthened, matching the length of her legs, tottering frantically as her tail lashed the air, though that would not be anywhere near enough to stabilise herself until she became more familiar with hooves.
Her feet too were not spared the humiliation as they split into cloven hooves, her calf slimming down, pointing up into a hock and the curve of bovine hamstrings, though she still did not guess what was happening to her. It was not as if, of course, they'd left her a mirror in there as her skin crawled with a sickeningly prickling sensation, shifting her weight constantly, head swinging about as if it was out of balance with the rest of her body.
The door... No, the door was locked and she had barely taken a single step towards it before her body crunched and swelled, the entire shape of her having changed. But that was not what caught her attention but the push of her head forward on a longer, meatier neck, needing the rolls of fat and skin and muscle there solely to stabilise it. Her cheeks sagged, eyes moving to the side of her head, though Kassandra did not see how they darkened. Her ears too needed to be larger to better hear and dispel excess heat from her body, flapping to ward off flies, her entire body prickling to life with a coat of short, black hair that itched something terrible as it grew.
A thick, meaty tongue swelled from her mouth and she reeled from the horror of licking her lips, that fat organ nothing that would have fit in her mouth before. Everything was wrong, so very wrong, and there was nothing she could do about it even as what had before lain secret between her legs but for the partners she shared her bed with now tucked up under her tail. She shook her head and trembled in place, mooing anxiously, her sex teasing up into the slit of a cow, meaty and drooping and yet, somehow she knew, that of a virgin. After all, she'd taken on a new body and could no longer be called Kassandra, a woman, as she shook there, trembling and shaking, muscle settling into place over her new body, though the majority of her form was, quite simply, meat.
Yet there was one final humiliation left for her and she was not to be entirely devoid of mammary glands, although cows did not have breasts, per se – not the type of ones that she would recognise on a human body, at least. Something bloated from her stomach, tucked in closer to her hind legs than she may have expected, but the weight of her filling udder dragged it down and into position, the teats plumping out – all four of them. Her body was a tool and it was designed for something that she had never considered before, panting and heaving, her flanks shuddering with every breath she managed to suck, less than gratefully, into her lungs.
She was nothing, nothing that she wanted to recognise, staggering and bellowing, swinging her massive, blocky head back and forth, back and forth. She was not her anymore but a creature, her sides hanging heavy as everything about her body weighed her down, pulled her down into the ground. Her hooves splayed at the door opened but the woman that entered was not the one who had signed her into the programme, though Kassandra did not like the smile on her face one bit.
No one would have liked a smirk like that that pulled her lips up that much.
“Come on, girl. Time to go to your new life."
There was nothing else she could do as a rope was looped around her neck and she was led from the room, treated as nothing more than a dumb cow. But she was human! She really was! She cried and shook her head but all that came from her lips were cow noises, sounds that she was not even aware that bovines made, nothing more than a common heifer. Before she knew it, the life that she'd had was stripped away in the blink of an eye, her head lowered as she was led onto a trailer with a low roof, rattled off to god knows where.
Lights flashed through the slats in the trailer and she shook her head, though no one would recognise it as anything other than an animal shaking off a fly. Everything that she'd worked for no longer was real, her sense of reality warped and twisted. Her studies meant nothing, her body, well... Udders meant something but that was something that not even she wanted to think about as she stood there, trembling.
Could she have resisted? Oh, she didn't know. What would happen when she resisted was not something that seemed to be possible for her, for it was already more than difficult enough to stand on her own hooves, hooves that should never have been present in her body. She whimpered but the way that it came out was foreign to her, groaning and shaking, waiting for the nightmare to be over.
And yet the nightmare was only just beginning as she was unloaded into a more clinical farm than she had ever seen, resisting the tug of the rope only briefly before her hooves were forced into action. There was only one way to go and that was forward, fear lacing her stride, dragging her hooves, at the very least trying to buy herself as much time as possible to think, to try to do something.
Kassandra should have known that it was useless, however, as she saw similar terrified eyes staring back at her: chickens and goats and sheep and even other cows too. She knew without knowing, for they could not communicate as humans had anymore, that all of those there before her had been humans at some point, though their purpose, well... That was still yet to be determined.
Kassandra shuddered, turned out into a steel pen with no grass, only two buckets shoved into the corner. What were they there for? There was something far bigger than she could have ever imagined going on there and she was just a cow. No matter what she did, how she tried to gain attention, they all ignored her, tying her up when she spent too long frantically bashing herself against the bars. Someone muttered that she was damaging the merchandise and maybe they'd have to run her through the system more quickly. She stopped acting out after that.
She overhead that it had been going on for years and that may as well have sealed her fate even more than anything else. If no one had gotten out before her, just what was she supposed to do about it? Her vision faded, the light of intelligence in her eyes slipping away more and more with every day that passed at the facility, seeing other animals come and go, although she did her best not to think too much about the ones that left and never came back. It wasn't worth it. Not when she was most likely already at the end of her days.
Kassandra was lost to them, the evil humans that had swept her away and changed her life, turning the beauty into the beast and then leaving her like that too just for good measure. There was a humiliation in her day to day, driven by hormones, prey to the change of light and the seasons, her body embarrassingly entering her cycle and becoming unbearable for days. Not that she wanted true relief in that regard but, well...sometimes a desperate woman could become a desperate cow and she could not waste too much time thinking about that.
There were not many thoughts left in her mind at the end of it, eating and sleeping, standing bored the rest of the time. Whether her mind truly went or not was up for debate but she knew that she would never again experience anything as a human, dragging her hooves through the dirt and her own shit, her life changed forevermore. Her genitalia, well... No, no. That one wasn't worth thinking about as she chewed her grain, staring straight in front of her as a chicken who had never settled completely and was turning in circle after circle in the heat of the noonday sun. He wouldn't last long.
Sometimes they took blood from her, sometimes other samples, but there was something different that day as she stood there, hardly interested as the lab-coated technicians entered with a rope halter at the ready. One smirked. Kassandra barely flicked her ear. What was the point anymore?
“Time to go, girl."
Her fate was sealed. There was nowhere for her to go, nothing that she could do, her life ripped from her, the past in shreds. She was nothing more than beef to them and, finally, surrounded by other cows that all held a similar air of desperation to her. They had been something, someone, just like her at some time and Kassandra swore that she saw their faces changed in the delirium of boredom, becoming women just like she'd been, scared for their futures. Yet loan repayments were off the books now and they were nothing more than cattle, livestock to be moved from one place to the other, Kassandra shuffling her hooves forlornly along as they loaded her up onto another truck.
How much time had passed? Oh, that was impossible to tell. What was it any good to her thinking about the days? Better to chew hay with the rest of the cattle, their eyes rolling in hear, hot, sweaty, stinking bodies pressed up to her in the truck as they rattled off. It was the first time in so long that she had been with other bodies, not even people, and the comfort should have been reassuring when it most certainly was not. All she wanted was to be back in her room, studying for her exams, doing the very things that she had groaned and lamented so long ago.
The truck rattled to a halt and little did she know that the final end had come when the metal doors swung open with a creak that seared through her like the blade of a knife.
The slaughterhouse beckoned and she dug in her hooves, mooing and bellowing and stomping and throwing her weight about. However, she didn't have the strength or balance to fight back against burly men who knew how to handle cows like her that didn't step into line, their growls and shouts and flapping arms driving her along. What shot her down the chute, however, was the jab of a cattle prod, the stinging bite of electric striking fear into her heart like nothing else ever could.
Meat had been an issue for the world not so long ago, demand exceeding the supply. Kassandra had thought that it was a good thing but now, as she stepped to her doom, prodded along as nothing more than a beast, she knew that that was not true. They'd found their meat, a new source, and, in the process, had reduced the demand.
Quite clever, really. If you weren't a cow.
Lowering her head, she walked to her doom, the slaughterhouse reeking of death in that putrid stink that any animal knew and shuddered from. She was far from impervious to fear even as her bovine body shook and trembled, udders shaking with ripples of flesh, her fate sealed, her life stolen from her as swiftly as she had closed her medical books before, a decisive snap closing out a day of study. But her days were over as a man turned his head and spat and hefted a stun gun in his hand.
Kassandra closed her eyes. There was not even any point in fighting back.
It would all be over soon.
