Chapter 10: Cold-Blooded Greeting

Thankfully, Roger was only in the bathroom for about an hour before he felt drained enough to be able to sleep. The Watfords both gave him a hug, and he quickly bedded down for the night, trying not to think about the fact that he would be saying goodbye to them – at least for a while – within a day or two. He expected that he’d have the chance to get breakfast with them in the morning, and he was right.
Unfortunately, he found André waiting for him at the breakfast table, and quite aside from the fact that he’d come out naked and was completely embarrassed to be seen like that, he knew what it meant.
“You already found another host, didn’t you?” Roger asked.
“Yes. There were…a few that were quite interested.”
“…”
He glanced at Jolene and Harry. Obviously, André had already talked about it with them from the way that they were staring down at the table, both of them with a mix of sadness and anger. Both horses looked like they were ready to just throw the cheetah out, and they probably would have if it wouldn’t have gotten all three of them in trouble.
Shaking his head, Roger sat at the table, pulling his chair up to it and trying not to blush any further. His morning wood ground against the underside of the table, and he rubbed the back of his head.
“So, um…who is it?”
“I’ll tell you in the car,” André said.
“Why not here?” Jolene asked.
“Because you’ll follow me, or beat me there and cause problems,” the cheetah pointed out. Not accusatorily, but more in a matter of fact way. “You already tried to mark him so that nobody else could. I can smell it.”
“…I tried to wash that off,” Roger said in his own defense.
“That won’t be coming off for at least a week, no matter how much you wash it. It’s part of being with horses.”
That explained why they said it was going to be a mark. He still felt a bit of the squishy feeling from last night, but considering how deep into his guts that cumshot had gone, he imagined that he would be feeling that for a good few days. He groaned, rubbing his stomach a bit as Jolene got to her feet, the mare going from counter to counter to pick up the different breakfast foods.
It was a very tension-filled meal, and he wished that it had been otherwise. They had been wonderful hosts, and while he definitely agreed with the reasons for cycling him between hosts at the moment, he didn’t like the fact that he had to say goodbye like this. It felt wrong to end such a good time with them on this note.
Breakfast of pancakes, vegan sausage, and toast was quickly taken down, and Roger excused himself to get dressed. He paused in mid-step when a bit of horse cum oozed out of his hole when he took too long a stride, and blushed, looking over his shoulder apologetically.
There was no judgment, and André seemed particularly interested in his cup of coffee at that moment. Thankful for the free pass from embarrassment, he hurried back to his bedroom, pulling his suitcase out and pulling out some clean clothes.
It didn’t take long to get dressed, though he did stuff some toilet paper into the back of his underwear just in case there was more in there that he hadn’t gotten out. The last thing that he wanted was to slime up the back of his clothes after taking that huge load the night before. He could still feel just how loose he was after that, his hole twitching idly as he pulled his clothes on. Pretty sure that he could have shoved at least one finger inside without touching the inner walls – perhaps even two – he shoved his things together. He still had plenty of cash that he needed to deposit in his account, but he would do that later.
When he was ready, he took his suitcase back to the kitchen. André was already standing and ready to go, while the Watfords were deliberately not looking at the cheetah.
He sighed, going over to give them both another hug. Jolene lifted him off the floor, and Harry did the same.
“Soon as we’re allowed, we’ll see you again,” Jolene said. “You’re herd, and that means that you belong. You have a place. You understand?”
“Yeah…Yeah, I get it.”
He also knew that that might change by the time that they were allowed to see him again. He knew for a fact that Jolene had been massively affected by the pheromones and the genetic memory stuff, and who knew what she’d feel like when she saw him again when she was no longer affected by it, and when he was on the medication to keep it from being as strong? Roger hoped that they’d still be friendly, but he doubted that he’d still be seen as herd when he was no longer ‘cheating’ the way that he was.
There was less from Harry, but they both embraced, both patted each other’s backs, and he wasn’t at all surprised to feel the stallion popping a bit of a boner. He shook his head, walking over to the cheetah.
“Are you ready?” the Peacekeeper asked.
“Yeah. Ready as I’m going to be.”
“I’m sorry about this, for what it’s worth.”
“I know. But. Yeah. Let’s go.”
They walked out of the apartment, and he hoped that this really was the better decision.
#
Once they were in André’s car and on the road, the cheetah finally started opening up.
“Now, I have to admit, this is less of a ‘volunteer’ host than it is someone that’s been pressed into service.”
“What kind of ‘pressure’ did you have to do?”
“Mostly the legal kind.”
“Blackmail? That’s kinda…messed up.”
“Not quite. More just…how do I put this? We are talking about a decent person, but they are on parole, and so, my superiors could…” André rolled his eyes. “I suppose it is blackmail when you come right down to it.”
“So, they’re going to be pissed at me.”
“Possibly. At first.”
“Well, where am I going? Who are they?”
André was quiet as they took another turn, joining some of the traffic heading towards the center of the city. Roger gritted his teeth as he started to wonder what had gone wrong. The fact that the cheetah had needed to get him away from the Watfords so fast made him feel like there was something wrong higher-up, something that he wasn’t being told, something that would come back to bite him in the ass if he didn’t figure it out.
And having to force someone to take him in? That felt really off. Something was going on, and he didn’t like it.
They’d passed several more lights and taken another turn before the cheetah finally spoke up again.
“I’m not happy about what’s going on either, Roger, and I’d keep this from happening if I could. However, despite the…methods…that my superiors are taking, I think we can both agree that it’s better for the Watfords to have some time to recover. Yes?”
“…I can’t disagree there.”
“Most people would ask for at least a few days to get their place set up for you. In fact, that’s what all ten people I called said, that they needed four or five days to be ready for a guest like you.”
“That seems…excessive, since I’d only be there for a few days.”
“They were told, at full disclosure, what it might do to them,” André said.
“Oh…so…”
“The script that I was told to read referred to you as a ‘potential chemical threat’.”
“…Oh.”
“As I said, I don’t approve of the methods of my superiors right now.”
Roger nodded. Much as he understood the reasons for calling him that, he didn’t like it, either. It wasn’t like he could control what was happening around him. He had pheromones that caused the Anthros to do things, yes, but it wasn’t like he was trying to take advantage of the ones that were affected. Hell, he was trying to do the right thing and keep them from trying to take advantage of him. Not that well, admittedly, but he was still trying, and being labeled a chemical threat wasn’t what he expected from his efforts.
He rubbed the back of his head, sighing.
“So…instead of putting me in a hotel…”
“That was another difficulty. With the full disclosure rules, there were perhaps two hotels that would be willing to take you immediately, and I would not put most people in those particular establishments. Not without a great deal more personnel to keep an eye on their belongings and person.”
“That dangerous?”
“Worse.”
“…I thought you had a better system out here.”
“Most of the time, yes, but among some of the wilder ones…”
“Oh.”
“Yes,” André said with a nod. “You probably wouldn’t fare so well around them, considering past experiences.”
Wincing, he had to nod in agreement. That doctor had been pretty damn rough, and so had the raccoon. If there were others that were even more wild, more aggressive, it’d probably have an even stronger effect on them. And then…
Well, he didn’t want to be a bloody stain because they got overaggressive.
“So, you pushed someone else to take me?”
“Yeah. Another couple. They’re a bit strange, but you should get along with them just fine, legal pressures notwithstanding.”
“That…doesn’t really make me feel better.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
He sighed, rubbing his forehead as they took another turn. As he looked out the window, though, he realized that they were leaving part of the inhabited city behind for something else. The buildings were looking less and less cared for, and if he didn’t miss his guess, he would have said that they were less inhabited, too. The few faces that he saw through windows or people in the yards looked like they were living here because they had to rather than because they wanted to.
“Uh…what’s going on?”
“What?”
“Why does it look like we’re going to the part of town nobody wants to be in?”
André rubbed the back of his head.
“Well…we kind of are, but not in the way that you think.”
“It looks like this used to be the good neighborhood. What happened here?”
“The Mutations happened.”
“…Oh…You mean…”
The cheetah nodded, and Roger whistled. Suddenly, everything made more sense. If this was where one of the epicenters of the changes was, no wonder the different Anthros were living in other parts of the city from this one. Particularly if –
They rounded a corner, and he saw it.
Roger winced as he looked down the hill towards the abandoned establishment. It might have once been lovely and lively, but now? Now, it just looked like a hellhole compared to all the other parts of the city that he had seen. Nothing moved down there, and the only things that stirred were the bits of trash that were blown around in the dip in the earth.
It was a zoo, the cages empty, and most of them damaged in some way or form. He leaned back from the window, having to look at something else, anything else.
“Do…did they…”
“We keep it as a mark of history, but despite trying to turn it into a museum, nobody goes there.”
“Ever?”
“Ever.”
“…I don’t blame them,” he muttered, looking down at the cages and the broken snack stands, the aquariums and the empty pools. “I wouldn’t want to remember ever living in a place like that, either.”
“It brings back old thoughts,” André said, shaking his head, the cheetah’s tail twitching slightly behind his back. “It’s not a good place. Most Anthros will live as far from it as they can, but there’s always the fact that there’s some people that need cheap housing. It’s as cheap as it gets, around that thing.”
Roger nodded. It felt like he imagined some humans might have felt looking back at slave plantations, or at the ‘monuments’ that were put up for some of the First Nation people. It was never a thing to celebrate, and if there were Anthros that wanted to burn the whole place down, he wouldn’t have blamed them. Hell, he wasn’t even one of them, and he would have thrown the first torch.
They circled around it to the far side, where an apartment block was waiting, and beside it, several small houses. One of them, a decent-sized two-story house, had some lights on inside, and that was where they stopped. André turned the car off, and honked the horn.
“Do you have to do that?” Roger asked.
“It’s better that they know we’re here.”
“Who’s they? You haven’t said.”
“A couple. One of them under house-arrest.”
“…You’re putting me with –”
“It’s nothing serious,” the cheetah said, getting out of the car. “The court even says that it’s more than the female deserves, but rules are rules.”
“Female?!”
There was no answer, and he had to struggle with his car door in utter shock as he tried to process that. It wasn’t the guy that was in trouble here, but the woman? What the hell was going on here? What the hell –
THUMP!
The house door slammed open, and standing there, looking down at him, was a crocodile. He couldn’t tell if it was a he or a she, because of the fact that they were so large, leaning against a frame that didn’t quite come up to their shoulders. They were bending down, leaning out through the doorway, half-glaring, half-staring.
“That you, André?”
Yes, it was a she. A big she. The cheetah nodded from the back of the car.
“Yes, it’s me. I brought him.”
“So, that’s a human, huh? Scrawnier than the pictures.”
“Well, they’re not the most sturdy of things, but they…” The cheetah looked back at him, smiling. “Well, you might find out.”
“Hmmph. Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. Hey, human. What’s your name?”
“R-Roger.”
“Come on, then, ain’t got all day.”
“Actually, Louise, you have the entire day,” André said, pulling Roger’s suitcase from the trunk. “You aren’t allowed to leave the house, remember?”
“Bullshit, that is.”
“I know. But it is the way that things are. Unless you find a way around your tracking collar.”
Collar. He blinked a bit, having missed that part entirely. He looked up at the crocodile’s neck, staring at the black leather that ran around her throat, and the little red dot that blinked on and off in the front. He had barely even noticed that was there, let alone had the intention of staring at it for more than a few seconds.
She noticed, of course. Louise growled in her throat.
“Yeah? What the hell you have to say about it, huh?”
“Um, nothing. Nothing.”
“Good. Because I’d have to fucking educate you about it if you kept staring. There’s a reason it’s there, and it ain’t FAIR!”
The last word was shouted past him towards the Peacekeeper, who completely ignored it, walking smoothly up to the front door with the human’s suitcase in hand. Roger followed, seriously questioning the whole thing, wondering if this was a good or bad idea. He was given a slight nudge through the door, looking up at Louise up close.
She had to be at least seven and a half feet high, utterly towering over him in a way that even Jolene and Harry hadn’t done. He gulped, not even having the distraction of a pair of breasts to stare at; she seemed more reptilian than humanoid, and he wondered, very, very briefly, just how far those differences extended.
Then his thoughts snapped away as he heard the revving of André’s engines. He whipped his head around, saw the cheetah back in his car, waving.
“See you in two or three days, Roger,” the Peacekeeper said, before backing up and driving off.
And then it was done. He was alone, left at someone else’s home with nothing to protect him. Roger stood up stark straight as the slow growl of the crocodile behind him, deep and clicking, filled the air. He turned around as slowly as he dared, stared up at the female looming over him…
And was shocked to see her grinning.
“So…what’d you think?”
“…What?” he squeaked.
“Good act, huh?”
“…Act?”
“Yeah. Little thing that me and André do. I try to rile him up, he sees if he can stay calm. Looks like he won today.”
“Are…are you telling me that…that was all a game? Fake?”
“Well, wasn’t fake,” the crocodile said, shrugging as she stepped away from the door. “I’m pissed as all hell being stuck in the house, but let me tell you, it’s not that much. Mostly the eggs.”
“Oh, um…are you laying?”
“No, and that’s what got me pissed off.”
“Oh. Right.”
“Not that there’s anything wrong with Lisa, but, eh, you know how it goes.”
“…Lisa being your…partner?”
“Wife, bitch. Wife.”
“Right! Right, sorry.”
“Yeah. And if you think you’re getting up to anything funny in this house with me and her, lemme tell you, you’re dead wrong. We’re dyed in the wool lesbians, and ain’t a dick in the world that’s gonna tempt us.”
“…”
He wasn’t even going to say anything. He had gotten everything wrong so far, and he didn’t want to tempt fate any further. With the way that everything was going, he didn’t want to learn how it felt to go flying through the window.
“Now, your room is down this way,” she said, leading him down the hall. They passed a living room almost immediately beside the front door, then a kitchen attached to it. Past that was a bathroom, then the guest bedroom.
She held the door open for him and he glanced inside. It wasn’t bad, though he rather preferred the bedroom at the Watfords. There were a few peeling places with the wallpaper, and the window lacked a screen. The whole place was clean, just…obviously hadn’t had any attention in a while.
Louise pushed him in, not roughly, but a bit more firmly than he expected. He almost fell right on his face from surprise, and then jumped as she picked him up and sat him down on the bed.
“Right. Let’s get this over with.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“You put out some sorta wonder-pheromone, right? Let’s have it, see if I gotta be worried about anything.”
“…Okay…”
He remained as still as possible as Louise leaned over him, sniffing along his cheek, then his neck. He blushed as she lifted his arm, sniffing under it and along his armpit, then let her push him down. As he laid on the bed, she worked her way down his body, sniffing along his chest, stomach, and then down to his groin.
That was where Roger was most concerned something would happen, considering the effects that he had had on the Watfords, and on the other people that he had encountered thus far. He curled his fingers into fists, sweating bullets from nervousness, but she didn’t do anything more than take a second huff down there. He waited, half-expecting her to jump him, but nothing happened.
Instead, she worked her way down the rest of his legs, and then stopped to pull off his shoes. He watched as she sniffed the bottom of his socks, and then shrugged, putting his feet back down on the floor.
“Yeah, alright. You got a nice smell,” she said. “Doesn’t mean diddly-fuck.”
“You’re not wanting to…you know…”
“Jump ya?”
He nodded.
“Not really,” she said, shrugging. “I grew up looking at ladies. Does that stuff of yours make me a bit wet? Yeah, but I ain’t in the mood for dick. Ain’t been in the past, don’t see it happening in the future.”
“Even for your, um…”
He nodded approximately where her womb would be, and for the first time, her cheeks burned slightly. However, she stood up so fast and started growling again so readily that he half-wondered if he had said something that’d get him thrown out of the house. The moment was there, then it passed.
“Even if you were a croc, and you ain’t…but if you were…”
“…Maybe?” Roger asked, wincing.
“…Maybe, and that’s a hard maybe,” Louise admitted. “And that’s only because I do want eggs. But ain’t getting that from a human, am I? So, ain’t no point in even considering something like that.”
“Yeah, um…yeah. Probably a good idea. Particularly since you’re married.”
“Yeah. And don’t you forget it.”
“…So, shall I just…unpack, or?”
“You do what you like. I gotta go keep up with work.”
“Oh? What do you do?”
“Publish shit that gets taught in school. Can’t stop doing that, even on house arrest.” Louise shrugged. “Anyway, get comfortable. Lisa will be back later, and she’ll start cooking.”
So, the other woman was both the worker and the cook? That was going to be different. Or at least, that was what he assumed was going on. It could be that Lisa was the one that went out and did the shopping but was normally the stay-at-home one. He shook his head, deciding it was better to not question that, and just focus on getting on with things.
He sat down on the edge of the bed, looking down at the suitcase. If he was only going to be here for a few days, he supposed it was probably for the best to just live out of his suitcase. Would make it easier to get out of here when the time came, and it would make it easier for Louise to not have to think about him taking up more space.
As he laid down, he remembered the few twitches that he had seen from the crocodile. She hadn’t been jumping for joy to smell him, but she’d gotten something out of it. Maybe enough to get wet, he supposed, though he hadn’t seen any of that in her jeans. She had seemed to be someone that was holding back.
Then again, all that anger, all that frustration. Maybe she had felt more than she expected and didn’t want him to think that he could turn a lesbian bi? If that was the case, she really didn’t know him.
And how does cross-species stuff work here, anyway?
It was something that he hadn’t even thought about with Jolene, just trusting her to be smart about things if they ever went to something like vaginal. He blushed, realizing that he was thinking of things that he had no business thinking of, and slapped the back of his head to try and snap himself out of it. It didn’t do a lot, but it did remind him that he was a little more sensitive than he thought.
On the plus side, at least I can just relax for a bit here. I don’t have to worry about Louise going out of her way for anything. And hopefully, Lisa is the same way.
He’d find out, he supposed.
#
The day wound on, and Roger actually reached a point of being fairly relaxed by the time that he heard a different car driving up to the house. He started to get up when something – or rather, someone – went thump thump thump down the hallway like a freight train starting up. Blinking at the massive shaking that the house went through, he slowly walked to the door and then down the hall.
By the time that he reached the front door, Louise had already reached the car. A leopard gecko – he assumed Lisa – was being all but yanked out of the car, lifted into the air. Compared to the massive crocodile, she looked almost like a child.
Yet, at the same time, he blushed at some of the hip curves that the gecko had. This one looked definitely female right from the start, and he could see that she had some more heft to her hips and rump than Louise did. No breasts, but then again, maybe that was something that was just the case for reptiles?
He didn’t know. There were a lot of things that he didn’t know.
What he did know was that he had a huge list of things that he shouldn’t be doing, and one of them was simple enough that he should have no trouble following it. Do not, do not, do not try and fuck the lesbians. That was an abuse of whatever power he had, and he didn’t want to turn either of them against him.
Particularly not Louise.
They stopped hugging and kissing a few seconds later, and the leopard gecko, bright yellow with brown spots on some of her exposed flesh, turned to look at him. She smiled, a gentler smile than Louise’s, but still a firm one, nonetheless.
“So, you’re Roger?” she asked.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“Well, it’s nice to see what a human looks like in person. You’re not so terrifying as some of the old books say.”
“Well…thanks?”
“Heh, it’s a compliment. Anyway, I’ll be happy to talk more later – I know this one’s been busy writing all day,” she said, nudging Louise’s hips, “but I gotta get dinner started. We’re having burgers tonight. That work for you?”
“Yeah, that’s fine.”
“I figured real meat would help.”
“Real, or…”
“Well, real as we can get. Less of the weird seasonings that the super-vegan stuff has,” Lisa said, pushing past him into the hallway. “You be the judge.”
“Lisa.” Louise cleared her throat. “Pheromone check?”
“I’ll do it after dinner.”
“Lisa –”
“After; I gotta get this started now, or we won’t be eating until after sundown.”
The gecko hurried to the kitchen, and Roger couldn’t help but stare after her. Not so much because of that swaying butt – though that was a nice attraction – but for the inverse of what he had expected. He had thought that Lisa would have been the one to bow to the wishes of the crocodile, not the other way around.
He blinked a few times, looking after her, and then looking back at Louise. He opened his mouth –
“Don’t.”
“…”
“Not a word.”
“I wasn’t going to –”
“Not kidding.”
“…Sorry if I touched a nerve.”
“Yeah, well…you didn’t yet, and didn’t want you to.” The crocodile shook her head as she walked back into the house, pushing him aside gently before walking to the kitchen. “You wanna come help? We always need another hand for some of this.”
“Uh, sure…”
It was weird being in a household that wasn’t going out of its way to try and appease him, but then again, maybe that was something that their sexualities helped with. He remembered that, at first, the cheetahs hadn’t shown any sort of reaction to him, and they’d all seemed rather interested in men already from the way that they had made the occasional lingering glance at the men on the street.
Then again, maybe it was the fact that they were both reptiles? Maybe the pheromones affected them less. Or maybe it was a combination? Or –
Ugh. He knew so little, and it was starting to make it really hard for him to figure out what was going on.
He almost ran into Louise when she suddenly stopped. Stumbling to a halt as she looked over her shoulder, he looked up and tried to look apologetic. He even got so far as to start apologizing when –
“How much do you know about Anthro biology?”
“…”
“No, that’s not an invitation to ‘study’ us. I’m writing a book on it, and I could use a little help on that.”
“I don’t know anything about it, but –”
“Great, that makes you perfect to see if it all makes sense, then. After dinner, you, me, and Lisa talk it out.”
“Uh, okay…are you a professor or –”
“She was, before she threatened to bite the head off of a student!” Lisa called from the kitchen.
“That was one time! One! And the guy was being a fucking dick, let me tell you!”
“Yeah, still got you suspended and under house arrest.”
“Even the judge told me I was in the right for that! It was just a bunch of fuckery from the rest of the staff and that kid’s dumbass Karen mom and -”
Starting to think that the stuff with André wasn’t an act. Maybe she’s just like that with everyone…
