Chapter 3: The Deception
Twist was left alone in the guest room. It was a nice elegant room, medium sized, with a small window which let in a generous amount of light and a view of he town . The room was well decorated, pleasing to the eye and gave off a relaxed feel. Exactly what Twist needed right now; some time to relax and to help clear his mind. It felt like a luxury but even so he knew he had a lot of important decisions to make. The big questions; what now? And how far could he trust the King? Surely...no...Steach wouldn't do such a bad thing as to kill their parents? Although it would explain the mystery and Steach's avoidance of the topic. Even so, he couldn't stop thinking about how his brother was, and everyone else back at Fenshadow.
Meanwhile, at Fenshadow Camp, Steach was trying to think of ways to get Twist out of the castle and tell him the truth. It was long overdue and was foolish...no selfish to think that he could hide the truth in the first place. But how? He couldn't just walk in there and say 'Oh, hello, I wish to talk to Twist,' although the thought did put a slight smile upon his muzzle. Steach took a long walk to think of some sort of solution, to fix the mess he had gotten Twist into.
Whilst both brothers were busy contemplating their problems, back at the castle, King Denoven had something else planned to try and persuade Twist to believe the lies he told. Twist was about to get visited by an old friend from when he had lived in the castle.
Twist was still undecided. As he tried to get comfortable on the bed to could catch some sleep, a knock at the door disrupted him. The door opened slowly and a familiar person entered.
"Hey Twist, how are you?" Asked a polite male voice.
Twist looked round to see a fairly old man, around his mid fifties, just inside the doorway and leaning on his walking cane. Twist was slightly shocked as he knew who this man was but couldn't put a name to the face. "Uhh... Hi. I'm okay thanks. Do I know you?" he replied nervously.
"You don't remember me? We used to be quite close.
"Yes. I remember you vaguely. Sorry, my mind is all over the place at the moment and I'm very tired."
"Well maybe your old friend Arric can help put a few things on your mind at rest."
Twist's ears picked up. That name! That name had haunted him for years and finally, Twist knew who he was. Arric had been in charge of running the castle for longer than anyone could remember.
Twist ran towards Arric and hugged him. They both really got on well when Twist was at the castle.
Arric smiled at Twist and let out a short laugh "So you do remember me! That's good to see!"
Twist, now laying on the bed replied "How could I forget? You were always there when my parents went away."
"Yes, you had good parents... Shame what happened to them."
"So... umm...what exactly did happen? Is it true...that Steach killed my parents?"
"Yes. Sadly that is indeed true. I overheard chatting between Steach and Dathe the night before they died, plotting to kill Bolvid, by putting a vial of poison into his drink. We then found Bolvid as well as your parents, Dathe and Sefila the next day, dead on the floor next to a puddle of spilt poisoned water from their cups."
From that point on, everything become clear for Twist. He must seek revenge and kill his brother. Family or not, there was no way Twist could let Steach live with what he had done. He pounced past Arric and left the guest room. Moving as fast as possible to the exit of the castle, Twist raced to confront his brother, startling servants and knocking things over. Nothing could get in his way. He had enraged into a killing frenzy.
As he dashed out of Tyridge into Setherwood Forest, more and more anger built up; pain, suffering and memories. Thoughts of how he would get his revenge not only for what his brother had done to their parents, but the lies; hiding the truth from him.
Approaching Fenshadow Camp, a couple of old scout friends approached Twist to try and scare him off.
"You're not welcome here mongrel, and you know it! No matter... More fun for us as we 'take care' of you." growled one of them.
Twist just looked at them and, sniggering contemptuously, replied, "Look, I'm just here to see Steach. So how about you move out of the way and no one will get hurt. I'll count to five, if you're still here by then...well, it's your funeral."
The two Wolves looked at each other, grinning wickedly, "How about we save you the time and we just start this now?"
"Fine by me," replied Twist, as he dashed in and grabbed one of the Wolves by the neck with his muzzle, snapping it's neck. The other Wolf attempted to escape, but Twist gave chase, "Too late to run now!" he barked as he pounced, landing on top of the scout, crushing to the floor. Twist followed with multiple punches into the nose and muzzle, causing blood to flow uncontrollably. "Count yourself lucky. If someone finds you, you might well live! Now to find Steach!"
Not having to travel far, Steach had heard the fight going on and was heading towards Twists location, ultimately confronting him.
"You! You bastard!" growled Twist angrily at Steach, "How can you live with yourself!"
"How dare you come here, where you're unwanted, and cause a scene!" snarled Steach, "And accusing me of I don't know what!"
"How dare I? HA! You murdered our parents and you feel you can judge me?"
Steach laughed evilly, "Oh, that... So you found out. Yes, though purely by accident, but I think things worked out well... In the end."
"I don't believe this, we always used to go on and on about how we would punish their killers, and all along it was you! Enough talking! I don't want to see you alive for another second! I want... No. I demand revenge!"
Time slowed as Twist dashed up to Steach and, with one huge swipe, hit Steach's undefended face, catching onto his eye and completely ripping it out from it's socket. Steach yelped in pain as he crashed to the ground. Twist looked over to him and said, "Time to go to hell where you belong!" Without hesitation, Twist stomped his boot down on his brother's head and crushed the skull against the pavement, where pieces of his brain could be seen oozing out around the bloody pus. Letting out an evil laugh Twist finally felt free of anguish. Suddenly, faint voices could be heard, calling his name.
"Twist...Twist! Wake up!"
It was Arric. He was calling Twist's name and shooking him, whilst trying to avoid Twist's flailing paws. "Wake up! You're having a nightmare."
As Twist slowly woke up, he rubbed his eyes to see Arric standing over him, looking concerned.
"It was a dream?" Twist yawned, stretching his lithe body, "But it felt so real."
Arrac sat down next to Twist. "You seem shocked. What was this dream, if you don't mind me asking?"
"I dreamt that I... Killed Steach. He didn't even put up much of a fight. I actually... Enjoyed the thought of revenge... But now I wake up to find it was all a dream. I must make this dream come true and avenge my parents!"
"You're just in shock, you don't know what you're talking about. You should get some more sleep and if you think the same tomorrow then, well, we can go from there. We have some important visitors tomorrow, your sister being one of them. She's been informed that you're here and wants to see you. I'm sure you'll want to see her too."
"I didn't even know I had a sister until earlier. I have no idea what to say. Does she know what Steach did?"
"Well...I probably shouldn't be telling you this but, the whole point in the meeting is to plan an attack on the Wolf camps in Setherwood Forest... And on your old camp too. Your sister Elcera, despite being a Wolf, is actually partly in charge of the Tigers, or the Tigura as they prefer to be known as. They're a battle team from up at Kethoren, a town and a castle similar to ours, to the west of here. Anyway, get some rest. You'll be informed of everything tomorrow. Take care."
"I'll try, although I have so many questions going round my head it will be hard. Thank you for filling me in on what's going on." Twist lay back on the bed, "Well guess I'll see you then."
As Twist was left to get some sleep before the big day tomorrow, over at Fenshadow Camp Steach had come up with an idea to get Twist back. The humans had another rivalry. To the south, in the mountains, there was the fierce Ssciph lizard tribe. If the Wolves could form an alliance, they would be able to battle the humans and rescue Twist. Steach decided he would inform the pack first thing tomorrow morning of his idea, and what he hoped would follow.
And so, both Twist and Steach rested for the night. The next morning would be one of the most important of their lives.
Well that took alot longer than i wanted to get up. Changed my original plan with the story so i had to replan it out again. Next part shouldnt take as long. Enjoy.
