The Beginning
#1 of The Bonds of the Past
'Great,' I thought, 'Brendan did something stupid again.' I was slowly walking down the halls of my school towards the principle's office. I once again had to get my brother out of trouble. This was mostly due to the fact that while I'm an A+ student, Brendan barely gets D's. He may have a decent draconic body, but his brain was, as I sometimes put it, on a permanent sugar high.
Maybe I should give a little introduction to my family first. The world I live in is called Htrae. It's a strange, advanced world full of massive cities, floating lands, and strange structures spread about the planet. The residents of Htrae were a variety of creatures, ranging from average humans to strange anthropomorphic creatures. Although my brother and I are twins, we are two different species. My mom decided to have a little fun one night, and slept with our dad Lucas. Lucas is a black and maroon dragon standing about 7'3". How my brother ended up having red-orange scales, we have no idea. My mom named me Alexander (though I am rarely called that), due to the fact I was born first, so I had the job of protecting my 'little' brother. Lucus still comes by every once in a while, and Brendan and I both enjoy spending time with him, usually playing games outside flying around (though I usually sat through that). Our mom, Pam, works almost full time as a nurse. She's 5'10" with brown hair and muddy brown eyes. We don't see her much, mostly because of the fact that she works nights. Although she would rather spend time in the day sleeping and picking up guys then trying to be an actual mother figure, she still cares deeply about us all. It may not be the perfect family, but it works out for us all pretty well.
Now, my brother is a 6'9" red-orange dragon with a reddish-gold chest, and red-orange scales over the rest of his body with a few color variations here and there. He likes to work out quite a bit, which explain his very muscular body, but also leaves him less time to study and get better grades. He has an almost jock like attitude, crossed with the innocence of a five-year-old. He can seem like a stupid little kid sometimes, but he's still pretty cute. As for myself, I am 6'3" which is not bad for a human. I am not as active as Brendan, and it shows a little. I have a brownish red hair, and soft red-gold eyes. While I usually stay out of trouble, most of my time is spent getting Brendan out of trouble, as long as it involves school. I've got to say, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Now... where was I, oh yeah. I finally stopped outside the principal's door, knocked, and said, "It's me, Mr. Takera."
"Thank you for coming Alex, you may come in."
"What did he do this time?" I asked as I walked in and sat down.
"Alex, why do you always think I did something wrong," Brendan asked.
"Because whenever I'm called to the office and they say it's about my brother, it usually is," I replied, rolling my eyes, 'Now, sit there and keep you mouth closed!' I mentally shouted at him in my head. Another thing about us, we have a sort of telepathic link. It's not perfect, but we can usually communicate our thoughts and feelings pretty well to each other. He glanced at me and looked down.
"Now, Alex. Your brother was smart-mouthing his teacher, yet again, and she sent him here," said Mr. Takera.
"Again? I'll make sure that he both apologizes to the teacher and writes a report on good behavior," I replied with a sigh.
"That sounds perfectly reasonable."
"Okay then, we shall head to class, and I will make sure he gets it done. Come on Brendan. Good bye Mr. Takera." We walked out the door.
"Alex..... Your going to help me on the report, right," Brendan asked hesitantly. I could feel that he was afraid I was angry. And I had every right to be mad at him.
"I suppose I should."
"Thanks bro, you're the best." He leans down and hugs me.
"I know I am," I reply as I hug him back. "Now, tell me about your little trip this time. What exactly did you do to make your teacher so mad?"
"Well, she asked me a question about math...." I groaned, already fearing this had happened.
" Exactly! Anyways, I said 'How the hell should I know?'"
"I'm guessing you had an energy drink today?" He nods. Of course. "Damn! Go on."
"Well, she got mad and then told me to leave. So I went down to Takera's office and then they called for you."
"Wow Brendan, what would you do without me?"
"Fail all my classes, get in trouble all the time, drink too many energy drinks, and get sugar-crazed." He said, drinking yet another energy drink.
"Yeah, that sounds about right," I said, nodding my head. Brendan leaned over and playfully punched me in the shoulder.
"I'm glad I have you, Alex"
"And you should be. And put that thing down, you had enough sugar already!" We both laughed. We decided to just head home, since school ended in about 20 minutes anyways.

I sighed. Brendan had once again left to go to school early with his friends. He always seemed to think that I didn't want to go. Stupid dragon... Either way, he said he was going to if he wouldn't be able to meet up with before school got over so we could walk home together.
"It seems like every time I turn around and leave him alone, he creates a mess for himself!" I ranted to our mother about our little trip yesterday. She was used to this, seeing as Brendan hadn't brought back a decent report card in about 6 years.
"His grades and attitude do need to improve a lot, but with you helping him, Alex, it shouldn't be a problem," she sighed. Suddenly, as she said that, my head pounded with a sudden ache. I bent over in pain when my mom turned her back; a small light went unnoticed from my pedant under my shirt. I bent straight again as the pressure in my head lightened, but something had changed. Although I was still in my kitchen, it seemed like I was looking at an old fashion movie; I could see a younger looking version of my mother, along with a younger, brown wolf. She looked vaguely familiar, but I just couldn't place her for some reason. As I watched the scene unfold, my pendant grew brighter and hotter, though I was still oblivious to its reaction. Then, as if the 'play' button had been pushed on the movie, the wolf started to speak.

"Come on...! Everything is being paid for by the university. I would get a free an education and be able to research the massive structures that litter our world, and the legends behind them."
"Well, I'm still not sure about this. I like the education part, however, it's the government funding for your research that scares me a bit." said my mom.
"Come on mom!" whined the wolf. Wait a minute... MOM!?!? Then that means....
"Well, honey... I guess it shouldn't be a problem... Oh, Alex! Hi sweetie!" said my mom.
"Hey Mommy! Hi Sarah! How are you?" said the young me.
****************************************************
I finally realized what was going on. The wolf is my sister, Sarah. But how was this possible? I blinked and returned to the present. I just saw my mother's past, I realized. Every once in a while, I would see an old memory of mine that I may have forgotten, and even a few of Brendan's. But I thought it was due to our close bond that I was able to see his. But this time was different. It was my first time that I was seeing a memory from another's point of view where I wasn't truly present at the time. This one was my mother's memory. Sarah had once explained to me that all three of the Dowski siblings had a form of power. While magical and other strange abilities weren't unknown of in Htrae, Sarah had said our powers were different. I thought back to what she had told me.
***************************************************
"Now, Alex. You and I both have small forms of telepathic powers. While I have the ability to glimpse into the 'future', you have the power to look into the memories of the 'past'. My powers were fully realized during my 18th year. I'm sure yours will too," said my sister.
"What about Brendan?" I asked.
"Ahh, it may not seem like it, but Brendan has his own powers. He can see the 'present'. He is able to sense the awareness of others, and tell how they are." she said.
****************************************************
Now it seemed to make sense as to why this had happened. I realized that I had forgotten today was my birthday. So, now that I am 18, my powers were being fully realized.
"Alex! Are you okay? You kind of drifted off there it seemed. Daydreaming again? Hahaha!" my mother laughed. It was a strange feeling, still seeing my younger mother in my head. I was looking at her face, yet I could still see the vision of the past.
"Y-yeah, you know me, always thinking. I should hurry; I'll be late for school."
"Ok sweetie, I am going into work tonight before you get home, they really need my help, and I feel terrible about missing yours and Brendan's birthday celebration tonight," she stated with a sad look in her eyes.
"N-no. We'll be fine. Bye mom! I love you!" I started walking upstairs for my stuff.
"Alright! I'll leave your presents on the counter! Make sure Brendan doesn't open his before you get home!" She shouted up the stairs and went back into the kitchen to make herself coffee.
I quickly grabbed my school stuff and got ready to head out the door. Before I got there, I glanced at the T.V. The two largest opposing political parties of Htrae were still fighting. It was even present inside our city of Denique Vita. The two party's representatives were speaking about their beliefs of how Htrae should continue with the rise of many factions both for and against relations with other worlds. The party interested in peaceful relations was Alcedonia , headed by Totus Pacis, a kind older dog-morph, who is know for his good heart and slightly silly attitude. However, their opposing party is Proeliator, which believes that we should use military-like force and any power to crush any possible 'threats' caused by the intergalactic visitors. Their leader is Valde Vox, a large, threatening looking lion with a large military background. I turned away in disgust over their foolish ideals and walked out the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On my way to school, I kept having short bursts of pain in my head, along with quick glimpses of the past involving bystanders and sometimes their interactions seemingly with my sister. As I continued up the step to my school, my head felt increasingly painful. Then, with a sudden *pop* the pain was gone again, and I wondered if it was over for now. I quickly glanced around, and it seemed like nothing had changed. As I looked around, I caught a quick look at Logan, a white arctic wolf-morph. I had a huge crush on him, and Brendan always teased me. I accidently caught a glimpse of his memories, and it was a very interesting dream. I started wondering if maybe I really did have a chance with him as I walked away blushing bright red. I climbed the stairs to my next class, with occasional glimpses of ore random memories from everyone, though I was able to start blocking them out. My powers of glancing into memories seemed to be improving even more. I walked into my math class and saw Mrs. Jones, my horse-morph math teacher. I saw a brief flash of her memory of her and her husband from last night. I tried to quickly shake the image of that out of my head, and I went and found my seat. I couldn't look up quite yet, still blushing about the lewd dream Logan had and now being embarrassed about Mrs. Jones. However, once Mrs. Jones started to talk, my mental storm started to calm. I was ahead in all my homework for this semester, so it gave me some time to reflect. I finally noticed that my pendant glowed slightly every time I would read a memory. I just wasn't able to seem to remember where I got it...
"Alex, are you paying attention?" said Mrs. Jones.
"Huh? Yes, ma'am. Just trying to remember something..."
"Hmm... Well, pay attention!"
"I will, ma'am." I was slowly remembering a bit about my pendant.
*******************************************
"Well Alex, you certainly like to wear that pendant everywhere."
"Yeah sis! It's awesome!"
"Great! I didn't know if 5 year olds like wearing stuff like this," Sarah said.
"Yeah, it's great! I can't believe you gave me something you found during one of your eca... exa... excavations!" I responded excitedly. Sarah had given me an orange pedant to wear that she found at one of the massive structure that she was researching, and was commenting on how much I wore her gift.
"Well, I saw it and just thought it was just right for you," she said with a distant look in her eyes.
"Thanks!"
That was two weeks before Sarah was fatally shot. They never managed to find the shooter. We were able to go see her in the hospital, right before she passed on. Brendan and my mother had already walked out because they were crying so much. I was standing next to her, numb. She was a beautiful wolf, but she looked so...broken. I could feel the tears coming. I turned to leave, but Sarah woke up and quickly grabbed me. She then whispered in my ear something I only remembered now:
"Alex, I am sorry that I have to leave you so soon. There was a lot I wished I could share with you. As you remember, I can glimpse the future. A year ago, I saw far into the future, almost thirteen years. I saw something for which I had to make preparations. I can't you much, but it involves you, Brendan, and the mysteries surrounding our world. Do you remember the pendant I gave you? Make sure you keep it on you, as it is the key to tap into and focus your power. Wear it as both a memento of me, and to keep you and Brendan safe. I know that you will remember only when you start to awaken. I will always love you Alex. Goodbye."
***********************************************
Huh? Why was I unable to remember this until now... I also saw that my pendant was glowing slightly. I guessed that Sarah really had been able to lock that away until now.
"Alex, are you okay? You look pale...." asked Mrs. Jones
"No, I think I need to go home, sorry..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I was walking back home, my head was in pain again. I felt Brendan's anxiety and knew that he was catching up to me after ditching school. I just hoped my powers would settle down for a while as he caught up.
"Alex, are you okay?" Brendan asked worriedly as he landed next to me.
"Yeah, I've just been getting headaches all day from some old memories, as well as those from an especially lewd one I glimpsed from Logan..." I trailed off, letting him digest the information.
"See, I told you he liked you...! Wait... You read his memory? How did you do that? I thought that you could only read your own and mine sometimes, but other people?" he asked me hurriedly.
"Oh, yeah, it's been happening a lot recently. I've started to see them a lot, though if I concentrate, I can block it out a little better now, but it sometimes comes in waves and..." I couldn't finish. I felt a sudden burst of strange and ancient memories well up inside my head. Brendan stared at me oddly, for he sensed a little of what I was feeling, and suddenly my vision went dark. I blinked and was suddenly in a room furnished with older style furniture and what seemed to be an amazing library. I turned around a caught a glimpse of an older looking human sitting on one of the chair.
"Who are you? Where am I?" I asked in a panic.
"Calm down Alex, and let me explain. This is a special room connected to your mind through the pendant you wear called the Room of Pasts. And I am Senilis, your new teacher. I am here to tell you how to use your powers. I am also one of the oldest souls contained within your mind and body. I am, in all actuality, one of your past lives." Senilis replied calmly. All I was able to do was stare at him.
