Crickets buzz along the old forest trail. The full moon, along with the host of the Milky Way, grants Nex enough light to make his way towards Sades’s little rendezvous point. Along the way, Nex grumbles, shivering at the night chill. His usual shirtless attire was made mostly for marauding and banditry on sun-scorched roads, not hiking in the middle of an old campground.
Not too many people used these recreational locales during the initial fallout. He had always been warned away from them, himself, after things began to settle. Back in his younger years, the idea of “roughing it” in the woods had its appeal. Nowadays, it’s just the way that everybody lived. They didn’t need a fake version of the survival experience to get their desire to live going. Nah, the world is crazy enough as it is. He scratches his stump thinking about it. Yeah, it’s crazy, but it’s also fun.
And Sades did indeed promise fun. What freaky shit does the doctor have up his sleeve this time? What was it he said as they lay in each other’s arms amidst the ruins of an old shack? “I’ve come across quite an interesting nugget of information. And it rocked my world. See me by the old cabin, up on the hill, overlooking the crystal-clear lake, and I’ll share with you an experience you will never forget.”
Nex had laughed and suggested he would gather up some firewood and they’d be able to snuggle up by the fire and watch the sunset. But Sades insisted that he’d come up during the night time, only after it got dark. “It might take that long just to get everything in order,” Sades said, before nipping on his ear, of course.
When he makes it up along the hill, the scent of burning wood catches his nose. He creeps down low, knowing that he cannot be too careful when it comes to traveling in the wilds alone. As he makes his way closer, he finds the cabin, a dull glow coming from the windows. He sighs. Sades must have gotten there already.
That’s when he hears it… whispers. Why are there whispers? The bandit goes into full gear, pulling his white mask down over his face, and he makes his way over to the cabin wall, holding onto his axe and ready to split some skulls if there is any indication that the people here hurt his Sades. He presses his back up against the wall, listening in, trying to find out what they’re saying.
“Please, and he’s such a barbarian. I know most people these days are, but really… that mask and that Post apocalyptic outfit of his? Is he an actual nomad, or is he dressing up for Halloween?”
That voice! It makes Nex grip his axe harder. It can only come from one man. He grits his teeth and wonders to himself. “What the hell is he doing here?”
No time to really think on that. Noir being anywhere near Sades means trouble. So Nex spins around and kicks the wooden door. It doesn’t give, so he lifts up his axe and is about to bring it down, when the cabin door opens up, revealing none other than the blond locks of his beloved Doctor.
Nex’s axe stops in mid-swing, his arm screaming in protest at the sudden break. The masked bandit jumps back, eyes wide and white behind the false face. “S… Sades!?” He asks, his glance looking just beyond his lover and seeing a nice wooden table behind him. There is set up three saucers with tea and biscuits, and sipping from one of the three teacups is the man he was expecting to ambush.
Blowing on his tea to help cool it off, the prim and proper devil of a man brings the drink to his mouth and takes a polite sip. “Pleasure seeing you again, Nex,” he says. “It’s been awhile… please, come, sit.”
Sades approaches the befuddled bandit and pulls the mask up over his head. He then leans in and gives him a peck on the cheek. “Come on, ya big lug. We have a lot to discuss.”
As he’s led inside, Nex drops his axe and sits on the chair opposite Nex. Sades, then, sits between the two of them and picks up one of the cookies, biting delicately into it. He chews it a few times as the other two men stared each other down, conflicting emotions bubbling over in Nex’s stomach. Once Sades swallows his bite, he places his cookie down, and coughs. “So,” he begins, lacing his fingers together and folding his hands on the table. “Noir has told me about your little arrangement,”
“He what!? Nex shouts, gripping the edge of the table and standing up, staring bullets at the opposite man. Noir places his teacup down and giggles a bit, bringing his hand up to his mouth. “Oh, but you’re so cute when you’re angry. Perhaps that’s why you’re so good in the sack?”
Nex turns to Sades, running a hand through his own hair and blowing out his frustrations. “Sades, please… it was the heat of the moment. He… he said we’d challenge each other for your honor. I… I did it to protect you from him.”
Sades sighs and pushes his glasses up, shaking his head. “Well, while it’s nice of you to think of me and spin it as some kind of noble contest, there remain two highly important facts in this case.” Sades scowls at Nex and lifts his hand, showing him one finger. “First, you slept with my ex-boyfriend behind my back. I can’t believe you’d actually do something like that.”
“Oh, believe me my uncouth friend,” Noir says, dipping one of his cookies into his tea. “I had to tell our beloved doctor all of the lurid details.”
Nex slumps into his seat, shaking, devastated. Had Noir found a way to get Sades to hate him? Had he finally won?
