Just before the Muse and the Succubus could collide, however, the air suddenly filled with an intense magical aura. The two outsiders were frozen in place, the Muse’s dark-skinned hand about to grab the succubus’s outstretched arm, and the succubus about to grab for the Muse’s sex. They were stuck in mid-reach, their lightning-fast strikes stopped before they could begin.

Everyone stared, their eyes mostly fixed on the goat-succubus’s legs and exposed sex, but some of them were staring at the angry expressions that they both shared. Caelia was one of those thus fascinated. She wanted to look away, but she was so used to seeing the Muse so soft and confident and teasing that seeing her angry like this reminded her of the fact that the human-looking female wasn’t actually human. There was more there, something far more terrifying than just another person in the city.

Eve stepped between the two, gently nudging the frozen females apart until there was at least ten feet between them. The older woman stood in the middle, then snapped her fingers.

Just like that, the two of them just fell forward. The Muse caught herself, turning it into a semi-spin, while the succubus just hit the floor. Hard. With her ass in the air.

There was a hint of pleasure from the sight of that, but nothing like what would have happened if they were outside of the sorority house. Caelia shivered as she understood the power that was being filtered, and wondered how anyone, let alone the little halfing that had been attached to the demon as a host.

Yet, for all that, Roselle Greenhill ran forward almost immediately, and the near-naked halfling was right there, helping her outsider back to her feet. Caelia almost felt bad about not running forward herself, but considering that the Muse seemed to be fine…

Roselle whipped her head around, spitting on the ground.

“You fucking bitch.”

Caelia blinked, opening her mouth –

“Oh, no, don’t you fucking dare. You think that you can just sit at the back and pretend that you’re not here? You’re supposed to be the fucking host for that fucking show-off,” the halfling said, pointing at the Muse. “You’re supposed to be making sure that they get to have a good time. Show ‘em what it’s like up here.”

“Down here, my little walking vulgarity,” the Muse said. “Not all of us had to take the elevator to get here.”

“And you! You can fuck right off,” the halfling continued. “You think you’re so perfect, so wonderful just because you can get all artsy-fartsy. Little fucking piece of shit you are, showing off and never giving anyone the real deal.”

“Are you trying to insult me, or just seeing how much sewage you can push out of your mouth at once?” the Muse asked, looking down at her hand and jingling her gold chains. “Because as far as I can tell, they’re one and the same for you, so intent matters, dear.”

“Least I’m fucking honest with what I’m doing, you fucking – ugh.” Roselle shook her head, helping her demoness to her feet. “Come on, Sar. Let’s sit down.”

Caelia couldn’t help but stare. There was definitely something different there than she had expected, and…well, quite a bit of a stronger bond than she expected, too. When she’d first entered the room, she had thought that she and the Muse would be about normal here, that everyone else would have been hating their companion about as much as she was, and this would be a way to vent that. She had expected that, since she was sure that she wasn’t the only one that had been assigned an outsider that was messing up their life.

But as she looked around the room, she could see most of the other ladies talking to their assigned outsider, muttering and talking with them like they were some sort of long-lost friend. There was a comradery there that she didn’t understand, because she just didn’t have it. The fact that the other beings were outsiders, only allowed into the city under lock and magical key, had just completely skipped their minds. They were being treated like people, not magical masters that they had to please.

What the hell…

The Muse returned to her side, and Eve gestured for everyone else to calm down, to quiet down. They were back on schedule shortly after, and the older woman gestured for someone else to come forward and talk about their partner. For all that had just happened, it seemed that everyone else in the room were keen to keep the show on the road.

Eventually, they reached the end of the list, and Roselle was the last of the girls to have a turn to talk. The halfling stood up, scratching her thigh crudely, and climbed onto her chair. She stood with her hands on her hips, nodding to the goat-succubus at her side.

“This here is Sar’onnath, but I just call her Sar. She’s a succubus from the other side, and fuck is she a good time. We’ve been fucking whenever I’ve not been in a lesson, and when we’re in the lessons, she’s helping me figure out how to taunt all the guys and girls into a frenzy.”

“Was that you responsible for the orgy in the Magical Theory classroom a few days back, then?” Eve asked.

“Yep!” Roselle said, only to frown and slap her hand across her face. “Goddammit…”

“I’ll make sure that the professor there knows to slap a few more wards down, then,” Eve said with a small chuckle, making a note. “But at any rate, it seems that you are having good luck getting used to your outsider.”

“Well, duh. A partner that can read my body the way that a telepath reads minds? Fuck yeah.”

Caelia still couldn’t quite believe what was happening, and leaned over to whisper to the Muse.

“Does…this happen all the time?” she asked.

“What?”

“The…bonding…that everyone else has done? It’s like we’re the only ones that haven’t.”

“Well, there is a reason for that, but let’s not get into that here.”

She had a horrible feeling that she already knew what it was. Shaking her head, she sighed as she looked back at the halfling.

“Yeah, Sar’s been fucking great. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this good about myself before. Hell, I look better than most of you do. And if you wanna see me prove that, come by the dorms later. I’ll have a half-off special for anyone that wants to try their luck against the hottest girl in the Arcanamirium.”

“Then you had best come to the dorms of one Caelia Leontina, host of the Muse of Earthly Desires,” the Muse said, cutting in.

The whole room went quiet again, and Caelia wanted to die and disappear from the world. Her face burned hotter than she remembered any of the fire spells that she had cast recently, and she tried to curl up into a little ball on her chair. The only thing that stopped her was the fact that that would involve pulling her feet off the ground and drawing attention to the scaly things again, and she didn’t want to do that.

It took almost a minute for someone to find their voice, and it ended up being the goat-succubus across the room.

“Heh, you think that your shy little orc-fucker is going to be good enough to outmatch my halfling?”

“I think that you prize raw willingness over genuine work.”

“God, can you be any more insufferable?”

“I don’t know. Can you be any more crass? I think we both know the answer, dear.”

“Hmmph. At least I work with my mortal.”

“Who says that I do not work with mine?”

“Look at her! She doesn’t want you,” the goat-succubus said, laughing. “The way that she’s sitting, she doesn’t want anything except for you to disappear.”

The Muse turned to her, and Caelia tried not to look quite so mortified and scared, but she could tell that she wasn’t pulling it off. The truth was, she really did want the Muse to stop, and she was even wishing that she hadn’t even signed up for this. She wanted everyone to forget this, and even the amnesty at the end of the next few weeks didn’t feel like enough after this little display. She’d want an amnesia spell.

Eve stepped in before it could get worse, holding up her hands to call a silence. The rest of the outsiders were already gathering together with their mortals, and those with magical powers had conjured popcorn.

“I think that’s enough for the moment,” Eve said. “Now, most of us have accomplished what we needed. Those that have spoken, you may leave. Caelia, Roselle, I must ask you to remain.”

Must ask. That did not bode well.

As the other sorority candidates left the room, trailed by magical beings that would never be seen again after this month, Caelia wrapped her arms around her middle. She felt like she was fucking up, particularly after seeing the way that most of the other girls were bonding with their outsider. She was the only one that seemed to be fighting hers so much, the only one that seemed to hate what they were going through.

What’s wrong there? Is it me? Is it her? What…what am I supposed to do?

She didn’t know. Instead, she waited until Eve finally broke the silence.

“I suppose this is our fault. We didn’t think when we invited two rivals to take part. That said…” The older woman turned to the Muse. “It is clear that there is a mismatch in personality here…and a rare one, at that. Have you been forcing yourself, Muse?”

“Dear, I’ve been trying to force myself. I assumed that this would be little different to the last time,” the dark-skinned woman said, throwing her head back and leaving her braids dangling behind her head in a sudden new style. “Yet, for all that I try and bring a little culture, a little beauty, a little sophistication here, I am stymied at every turn by, what? Raw embarrassment. I have never had such a difficult time getting someone to show off how beautiful they are, but this time?” The Muse shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know why, dear, I really don’t.”

“Maybe it’s because you’re so fucking pushy?” Sar’onnath grunted, shaking her head. “Can’t leave well enough alone. Always have to make someone ‘better’. Check your standards or something.”

“There’s nothing wrong with high standards.”

“There is, if there’s nothing but dust between your legs.”

Halfling and goat-succubus gave each other a high-five at that, while the Muse stewed. Eve, however, kept the peace, making sure that they stayed well apart from one another. The older woman glanced at her.

“Caelia?”

“Hmm?” the young woman whimpered.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m…humiliated,” she admitted.

“I’m sure. But are you okay?”

“…Yes,” she said, and because of the Zone of Truth, she knew that it was true. “But I don’t know what to do. I just…” She looked at the Muse again. “You said that there was a reason why we weren’t bonding.”

“Yes…” The Muse looked back at the older woman and the other pair, and then sighed. “There is…some truth to what Roselle has been saying. A host is supposed to bond with their outsider, and you are…resisting it.”

“I’m trying –”

“I didn’t say that you were refusing it. I said that you were resisting it. There’s something about you that is keeping my fabulousness at bay,” the Muse said. “I doubt that Sar’onnath or any of the others would have had any better luck with you.”

“That’s because she’s –”

Gold chains suddenly burst into being, several of them wrapping around the demoness’s muzzle before Sar’onnath could react. The Muse stomped up, holding a finger under the other woman’s furred chin.

“Call her anything bad, and see what happens. I dare you. I dare you. Because she is beautiful, no matter how much she thinks otherwise.”

“Ah. I think we see the problem,” Eve said. All eyes turned to the older woman, who smiled slightly. “Isn’t it obvious? We have an outsider who is in love with their host.”

All jaws dropped, but none lower than Caelia’s. Even as Sar’onnath started laughing, and Roselle joined in, even as the Muse stuttered and tried to deny it, Caelia just stared with her jaw agape. The Muse, in love with her? And why would that –

No…that would…oh, god, that makes sense…She’s only pushed it when we both were getting along…only able to fit in with something that I wanted to…

The magical bond naturally put the outsider in greater power than the one beneath, but if there was a different sort of feeling between the two, such as an extreme emotion attached, then the bond didn’t work the same way. That soft spot that, for example, love allowed, meant that the normally crushing power of the bond between them was no longer as firm, allowing a bit more resistance, more distance, more…self, one supposed, than the other bonds would have done.

Oh god. A muse was in love with her. A muse was in love with plain little her.

She turned to the other woman, stared at her, and saw the return blush.

“And now, kiss!” Sar’onnath said, suddenly pushing Caelia and the Muse together.

For once, they were of one mind, and the pair of them belted the goat-succubus right across the room.
