The timbers creaked and groaned as the ship gently listed side to side. The soft sounds of the waves lapping against the hull added a welcome tranquility. A tranquility that was so often absent as of late, and one that was sure to be shattered at any moment.
Mopsus sniffled and wiped a tear from his cheek as he returned the quill back to the inkwell. The soft light of the lantern flickered across the page as the robed satyr leaned in for a final review of his handiwork.
My heart,
I remember our days in the city, and how you stole them from me.
I remember the jubilation when after so long I once again heard your voice in my ear.
I remember the shiver down my spine as your breath tickled my neck.
I remember my passioned cries and your primal growls, your hands on my horns and your lips on my back.
I remember the sunset on our final day together, how you knelt before me as I joyously sobbed the word "yes".
I remember it was the happiest moment of my life.
I remember the sad smile you gave me, and the pain in your eyes before you took it all away.
I remember how you carefully plucked it all from my memory and left me with days that never were, with a person who never was.
I don't forgive you. I can't forgive you.
I was ready to give up everything for you. To walk away, to let the world burn just so I could spend another moment in your arms.
I remember how selfish I wanted to be.
I can't forgive you. I won't forgive you.
My heart, there is nothing for me to forgive.
You made the hard choice because I couldn't, and I love you even more for it.
Wait for me.
When this is all over let me be yours once again.
Yours, now and forever,
Mopsus
His emotions threatened overcome him once more, so with a shaky sigh and trembling hand he folded his letter and placed it carefully into the envelope. Not until the wax seal hardened did he allow himself to let go, to put his head in his hands and sob loudly. For the first time in a long time however these were not tears of sadness. They were not tears of rage, or exhaustion, or anguish.
For the first time in a very, very long time it was joyful tears of hope and love that streamed down his face. And it felt good.
