Chapter 3

With two creatures that he had never seen before on either arm, Ekundayo was led through the grounds and towards the great structure at the far side of the enclosure. He saw things that he had never seen before, heard sounds that he had never heard before, and smelled things, oh, he smelled things that he didn’t want to smell again. As soon as they dragged him through the front doors of the great house, he stumbled backwards, trying to cover his nose and shaking his head repeatedly.
“Nnnngh…”
“What’s the matter?” one of the leggy creatures asked.
“He’s never smelled bleach before,” the other said. “Remember your first time?”
“Oh, fuck. Right.”
Ekundayo had no idea what this ‘bleach’ was, but it must have been one of the foulest things in the creation of the world. He could barely breathe through the stench, and it felt like it was burning his nose every time that he breathed in. Even when he used his mouth rather than his nose, it was so thick that he could taste it. He gagged, his head spinning.
“Just keep breathing. You’ll get used to it. Eventually.”
“Or he’ll faint.”
“Better not. I don’t want to carry his smelly body all the way through the house.”
“Heh, he does stink, doesn’t he?”
They talked down at him almost as much as the human did, and the hyena growled under his breath. It was a low sound, though, something that was barely audible even to him. There was no point in fighting, not with a hand that felt like it might have been broken and with this horrible thing around his neck.
The metal felt like a constant reminder of that human’s watchfulness. It had knocked him out before, and it could do it again. The only thing that he could do was look for a way to eventually get it off.
The leggy creatures were right, though. The more that he breathed, the more that he got used to the stink. It still offended him, but it didn’t burn so bad as it had the first time that he had breathed it in. He groaned under his breath as he forced himself to take it slowly, trying to get used to it bit by bit, but it seemed such was not to be.
“You going to faint?” one of the guards asked.
Ekundayo wished that he could understand them properly. They were speaking in that strange tongue that the human used, so different from the barks and growls of his people. The collar around his neck forced the words to be understandable, to come through as something that he could respond to, but it was still painful to think about how little he was actually getting. He shook his head as the barks and growls came through after their words did, translated to something he did get, sighing.
“I won’t,” he growled.
“Good. Looks like this one’s got some toughness to him,” one of them said.
“Yeah, well, he charged Muto.”
“Yeah, that’s not toughness, that’s just crazy.”
Crazy painful, he thought, rubbing his hand as the guards turned around. But what else was I supposed to do? Run?
It hadn’t been bravery that kept him from running. He’d seen what happened when he ran away the first time, and he had every reason to believe that the collar would punish him if he tried something like that again. It seemed like his only choice was to fight, no matter how difficult or how stupid it might have been. He’d never expected to win, just hoped that he’d not get punished by doing the wrong thing.
While Muto – if he got the name right – had been the biggest and strongest of these strange, leggy creatures, the others were no slouches. Ekundayo had muscle, as all of his tribe did, but he didn’t have the height and lankiness of the different creatures around him. Furred in black and red, they loomed over him by a foot or more each, and while their limbs were slender, he could see that they had reach that he did not have. Speed, too, considering just how fast Muto had charged him. He had no doubt that they could kick or punch just as fast.
Don’t fight them. Just…go with them. They might listen when there’s no humans around.
That was his hope, at least. If not, then he was doomed to a great deal of loneliness, and a great deal of hopelessness.
They led him through the great house, and despite the smell, he did his best to try and memorize the layout of the parts that he saw. The first chamber was a short, narrow hall that led into a larger, open chamber, one that had stairs that ran up either side towards the second level. He had never seen a structure with two levels in it before, and he was fascinated with it before they dragged him off to the right. He followed along, bare feet and claws clicking against the tiled floor as they went.
The next hallway was longer, still, and he wondered how any man might have need of something so immense. It felt more like a village under one roof than it did a home, and Ekundayo started to wonder if there were other humans that called this place home, too. There had to be dozens of them, if not hundreds.
Much as he tried to keep track of the layout, however, he found it almost impossible. Rather than finding landmarks like he was used to doing in the forest and wilds, he found himself staring down long white halls with long windows, often with little to mark them as anything important, or even with doors that might lead to places that were more interesting. All he could do was stare and follow, follow and stare.
In the few chambers that weren’t hallways, he found bits and pieces of interest. They passed by a kitchen, where the roasting smell of pig caught his attention. He remembered the wild, feral boars of the home forest, and he remembered just how tasty they could be when they were cooked on the village fire. Maybe that was happening here.
He was dragged along before he could ask about food, and they passed through more hallways, a room filled with steel weapons, and then through more hallways again. Eventually, they came to a stop before a steel door, metal and hard, and one of the guards reached over and tapped a screen at the side. Once more, the mouse appeared.
“Yes?” she asked, her voice sounding more like a hum than a person.
“Guards and hyena,” the guard said.
“Oh, good, you’re here. Muto’s already been processed, so come on in.”
Processed? was all that Ekundayo could think before he was dragged forward.
The door opened to reveal a smaller room than the others that they had passed through, something that the overwhelmed hyena was rather happy for. He turned from the guards to the woman behind the desk, only to stare down at her breasts. They were definitely bigger than he expected to see on a rodent, and he wondered if they were natural for her. They certainly looked bigger than most anyone but the matrons of his tribe.
The mouse looked back at him, folding her hands over her desk, the main piece of furniture in the room. She used it the way that some of the warriors used their spears, something to keep enemies at bay, rather than just something to rest on. As the mouse nodded at the long-limbed guards, sending them away, he looked up at her neck.
Unlike the others, her collar had a different tag. Rather than one that dropped into a big circle with a little circle under it, hers just had the one circle. He looked after the guards as they walked out the door, and then reached up to his own tags. She noticed, nodding.
“Do you know what those mean?”
Ekundayo shook his head.
“They’re markers of who owns you. Right now, you’re wearing one that says that Master Brecht Hunter is your trainer, with the bottom one reserved for the person that buys you.”
“I’m not for sale. I’m a free hyena.”
“You were free. Not anymore,” she said with a shake of her head.
“Why not? Why are you siding with him?”
“Why not?”
“Because…because…”
It wasn’t that he couldn’t come up with reasons, it was more that he was beyond baffled that he needed to. He would have thought that someone else enslaved would already see that they needed to get out, that they didn’t belong here. Yet here she was, some little mouse that was looking across the desk as smug as could be, looking down on him almost as much as the human had been.
When he couldn’t sort through his thoughts enough to actually find a reason, she finally shook her head. Gesturing at the other chair on his side of the desk, she made it clear she wanted him to sit down. He stood, instead, holding his hands at his sides, hunched forward a little. With a sigh, she shook her head.
“You don’t get it, do you?”
“What’s there to get?” he growled. “He attacked me. Kidnapped me.”
“And now you’re somewhere you don’t know, and don’t understand. Yes?”
“Yes! I should be back home!”
“Well, you’re not. And you’re not getting back home. Ever.”
“You say that, but I’ll –”
“You’ll what? Find a way to escape? Find a way over the walls, back to your home, wherever it might be?”
“I’ll get away from here!” Ekundayo shouted, slamming his hands down on the desk. “I’ll get away from here, and then…then I’ll figure the rest out…”
The mouse looked up at him as his voice trailed off, and he could see that he hadn’t intimidated her. Even as loud as he was, he hadn’t come close to scaring her off. All she did was shake her head at him.
“I was right. You don’t get it at all.”
“Get…what?”
“Tell me. How far could you travel in a day?”
“In a day? Over twenty-thousand paces, more if we were running or hunting.”
The mouse nodded, muttering something about ‘twelve miles’ or something like that. She reached into the desk, humming to herself as she pulled something from it, tapping the buttons on it several times. Eventually, she put it back down, crossing her arms again.
“Has anyone walked a thousand-thousands?” she asked.
“…I have never heard of that number.”
“Well, you are seven of that number away from home.”
“What? That’s…that’s impossible. The world isn’t that big…”
“It’s bigger. It’s much, much bigger than that, and you don’t understand half of it yet. You’re so far away from home that you could never see it again, not without learning about the world around you, and not without finding out your place in it. And even then, you’re not human. You’re not one of them. You’re not even a Domesticated yet. Nobody will help you, and everyone will hunt you.”
“But…but…that’s not fair!”
“I am a Domesticated. That’s fair enough. You will be a Domesticated, and provided that you go to a good owner – and Master Brecht is fairly talented at finding those – you will be treated decently. However, the more that you rant and rave against it, the harder that’s going to be, and the longer the training is going to take. Do you want to fight against this day in and day out, or do you want to try and find some way to have a say in who buys you?”
“You can’t buy people!”
“No. But you can buy Anthros. You can buy beasts. You can buy Domesticated.”
“Then why would I want –”
“Because if you aren’t a Domesticated, then someone else can pick you up and do whatever you want. A Domesticated is marked as someone trained, and more importantly, safe and valuable. If you hurt a Domesticated, then the owner has to be paid for it,” the mouse said, tapping her fingers on the desk as she leaned back. “If someone so much as scratched me, they would owe Master Brecht a great deal. If they took it further, he could ruin them. However, if I were uncollared…They could do whatever they wanted. Anything at all. And I wouldn’t have any way to stop them.”
Something in her voice stopped him from arguing. Something in her voice, something in her eyes, something that just told him how serious she was. It took him a moment to really stare at her and realize that she didn’t have the muscles of the matrons back at the tribe, nor did she have anything besides force of personality to stand up to anyone here.
If a human wanted to hurt her, the collar really was her only protection. She didn’t even have the stupid thing that he did, being able to fight back. She was helpless.
No wonder she’s scared enough to take the deal…
Yet, at the same time, Ekundayo knew she was right about something else. The distance that she described was something that he couldn’t even imagine, but she had little reason to lie to him. Not to a fellow non-human. She could have used any number of lies to convince him not to leave, and he might have listened, but this felt like a truth. Glancing out the window at the cold air that stirred through dead trees, he couldn’t help but imagine she was telling him the truth.
He needed to know what the world was like away from his people. Maybe, one day, he might be able to stage an escape attempt, but not without knowing what was out there. He nodded, slowly stepping around the chair and sitting down.
“I’m sorry.”
“Apology accepted,” the mouse said, shaking her head. “Anyway. Shall we have introductions, finally?”
“Ekundayo.”
“Ekundayo. I’m assuming that Master Brecht has already given you a nickname?”
“…Yes.”
“And what is it?”
“…Eku.”
“He always was one for shortening them,” she said, chuckling to herself as she pulled at something else under the desk. “Eku, hmm? At least he didn’t just call you E. I’ve seen a few Domesticated come through with nothing but a letter.”
“Hmmph. If he dared –”
She narrowed her eyes at him, and he shut his mouth. He knew that it was empty bravado, anyway. There wouldn’t have been anything he could have done, even if the human had decided to go that far. There was too much of a power imbalance between them.
Nina laid a flat, black square on the desk, tapping it with one finger. It burst to life, white light coming out of it before a picture of a mountain dominated the little box. She tapped it again, swiping her finger to the side, and then held it up, the opposite, unlit side facing him. A click followed, and she laid it back on the desk, this time with an image of him captured where the mountain had been. He stared at it, then at her.
“What…what is that?”
“Please hold all questions until the end of orientation,” she muttered.
“No, what is that? That was me. That’s me.”
“That was a picture of you. I’ll explain all of this in a minute. Now, quiet please.”
Ekundayo didn’t like the idea of not knowing things, or the idea of someone else having a perfect image of him that way. At least if a warrior saw him on the battlefield, they only had a memory of him, a way of describing him to others. They could not hunt him with just a memory of his scent and sight, or a description of it. They did not have that perfect image, didn’t have a way of showing how to differentiate him that perfectly.
That, on the other hand, did. It meant that the human could offer that to anyone and say that ‘this hyena is mine.’ Not the other hyenas, not some special kind of hyena, but him, specifically. The idea that he could be captured and displayed and hunted so easily was terrifying.
The mouse tapped her fingers across his picture. Every so often, little boxes popped up and her fingers would dance across them, putting in different shapes and signs in them. He had no idea what any of them meant, but it was fascinating, almost like some sort of horrible magic that he couldn’t look away from.
It continued until his picture was almost completely obscured with all the different boxes of symbols. Nina tapped one last part of the box, and then it went black again. As she tucked it under her arm, she looked him in the eye.
“Now, we can get to questions. Follow me.”
“But –”
“We’ll answer questions much easier in a different room. And faster.”
“…Fine.”
#
Apparently, ‘answering questions’ meant that he was getting tied up again. Ekundayo didn’t like that in the slightest, but at least it wasn’t as horrible as being suspended and edged all night long. He just had his chest tied back and his arms pulled down to the seat that they’d given him. Something else was hanging down near the back of his collar, and he was doing his best not to think about that at that point.
Nina hummed to herself, patting his arm and pulling the strap around his right wrist that much tighter. She looked up at him.
“So, just so I know how much to download. What’s the tech level of your tribe?”
“What?”
“How much stuff have you invented. Are you up to metal yet?”
“…I’m not sure what that is.”
“Iron?”
“No.”
“Okay…Bronze?”
“No.”
“Okay, further back than I thought,” she muttered, tapping her little black box. “What about weapons? Other than the stuff you stole, anything?”
“Bows, clubs.”
“Okay, so we’re looking just post-stone age, then…probably early tribal…”
They went through a series of questions, each one making him think about his life in a different way. With each question, Nina started a little further forward than he imagined she had to, only to pull further and further back. Every time that he had to say ‘no’ about whether they had discovered something or not, he felt like she judged him that little bit more. Even if it was just sympathy, it was still judging.
He gritted his teeth as he did his best to keep from showing too much of his reaction on his face. Considering how he was already starting from the bottom, he didn’t want to push himself even lower. He kept his answers short and to the point, not bothering to say anything that would give himself away as less educated than he actually was.
Or at least, he tried. Nina kept dragging the information out of him. Not unkindly, but always with a persistence that had him speaking more than he meant to. She kept nudging him, gently poking and prodding, getting clarifications that outed him for everything that he tried to be vague about. By the end of the interrogation, she had drawn out a picture of his life that was surprisingly complete.
“Well, at least you’re not as bad as Muto was,” she muttered.
“He was worse?” He blinked. “I don’t believe it.”
“Believe it. He didn’t even have flint back there. They were down to bone clubs and little more.”
“And now…”
“Now, he’s the head of security. Partially because of that background, admittedly, but also just because this training works so well.”
“I’ll understand the world after this?”
“You’ll have the information in your head. Whether you understand it is another question.”
“How does that work?”
“You’ll see.”
He wasn’t sure that he liked having it put that way, but he also knew that he had little opportunity to change that. He would just have to see what happened. As Nina leaned him back, she dragged the wires to the back of his collar. They plugged into something back there, and then –
Click.
His eyes went wide as it felt like someone opened up a hole in the back of his head. It wasn’t that it hurt, but rather that it felt like there was a gaping chasm back there, like he’d just become aware of this great sense of space just behind him that hadn’t been there before. It pulled at the back of his mind, and it made it feel like he was going to just collapse into that emptiness, like his mind was going to fall right out of the back of his head.
The moment of terror stretched on, his hands curling into fists, his fingers clawing at the arms of the chair until –
Beep.
“AHH!”
Ekundayo arched his back, his eyes going wide as that space suddenly filled to capacity and then to bursting. The pressure grew in the back of his skull until his eyes felt like they were going to be forced out of their sockets, and as it grew, so did other things. Knowledge, concepts, memory.

It was a flood of words and sayings and terms that he didn’t understand, all being shoved into his head all at once. They were so full of different things that he didn’t understand, images and concepts and whole ideas that didn’t make sense in the slightest. None of it could be connected to where he had come from, or what he already knew. It was all abstract, all too much for him to take.
As the hyena screamed for mercy, he received none. All he had was a hand between his fingers, and he squeezed it as hard as he could until he blacked out.
#
He woke up again on a bed, of all things. Ekundayo groaned as he sat up, rubbing the back of his head. It no longer felt scarily open back there, but he still had a headache that he swore came from all the words and pictures that had been rammed into the back of his mind. He shook his head, sitting up the rest of the way, pulling his legs over the side of the bed. Where was he, anyway? The bed under him was soft, and it, a small table beside him, and an open box at the foot of the bed were all that he had been given, it seemed. He looked at the door.
Eku.
There were symbols on the door, and as he looked at them, they resolved into something that he understood. The symbols were the same as what he had seen on Nina’s box – her tablet, the word came to him – but this time, he understood them.
The hyena’s eyes hurt from how wide they went, and he had to force himself to look away. He looked down at himself, taking a few deep breaths. His chest hurt – heart pounding, pulse high, pressure skyrocketing – and more terms started to come down from the mind. Half of them were things that he did not understand, things that didn’t have context, but they brought with them solutions. More deep breaths, relax, think of something good and comforting.
What is…all this…
It was information, at the very least. Information that he didn’t have before, information that he didn’t know how to use, but it was there. It seemed to come when he needed it, and then disappeared when he didn’t. That was probably the best thing that could be said about it, that he didn’t feel like he was drowning in the new stuff.
Breathing slowly until his heart no longer hurt, he got to his feet. He hadn’t been bathed, he could tell. The smell of sweat was still strong in his fur, thick and heavy from the intense strain of being…educated, if one could call it that. He shook his head as he paced back and forth through the room, still breathing slowly, still focusing on calming himself down.
She said I’d have information, but not understanding, he thought. That means that…that I don’t just know it. It’s just there. It’ll come when I need it, right? And that means that I don’t actually know it when I don’t need it.
So, he’d just have to pay attention when it did happen. He’d have to make sure that he was watching for when the new information crept down to his skull so that he remembered it afterward.
The name on the door…
The hyena made himself look at it again. He saw the name ‘Eku’, alright, but he made himself stare at the pieces that made it up. He looked at the first one, learned that it was an ‘E’, and then went down the line. Each letter, each little piece, was pushed into his memory. He would keep that. He would learn that.
When he was sure that he had it, he sat down on the bed again. He was calmer, but something was still off. He still had more that he needed to learn, more to –
“Nnngh!”
The collar suddenly pricked at him, little needles finding his flesh. Almost instantly, the heat from last time – aphrodisiacs, his mind supplied, and he grabbed the word desperately – the aphrodisiacs took effect. He started panting, his nipples rising from his fur, standing out at attention. His cock started rising, too, pushing out from between his legs, getting hard and stiff, and his balls started churning like mad. Ekundayo fell back against the bed, already arching his back, digging his toes into the sheets, and feeling his cock begging for attention.
For the first time, he could reach down and touch it, and he did just that. The feeling of his shaft in his hand again was just what he needed, and he groaned at the satisfying feeling that came with it. Oh, fuck, how hard was he? His cock couldn’t move to the left or right, or up and down. All the throbs he felt went right into pushing pre-cum up and out from his balls, running down his shaft or over his fingers.
More. He needed more.
He started to hump his hand, his other hand going down to his balls and fondling them. They were heavy, alright, heavier than they had been by far. His cheeks burned, his eyes rolled back in their sockets, and his toes curled in pleasure as he felt that utter need rolling over him. As he squeezed his balls gently, he could feel the pre-cum flowing faster, almost like they were a pump to get it out.
Fuck…fuck…
The hyena humped his hand that little bit harder, bucking into it, his eyes rolling back as far as they could go. Every time that he started feeling himself getting close, he instinctively started to pull back, not wanting the collar to do it for him. It took him three near-orgasms before he realized what he was doing, and he groaned, pulling his hand back from his cock.
“Nnngh…that’s not…no…need…need to…”
He rolled over, his blankets bunching up under him as he started to hump against the bed, grinding his cock through the sheets. The smearing, slick feel of his pre-cum made him feel like he was marking his territory, and why not? This was his place, and he was fine with his own smell. Forward, back, forward, back, dragging his dick through the slick sheets, making them feel nice and shimmery against his cock.
He dragged his hips back, his tail flicking up, and the first hint of cool air hit his pucker. He groaned again, feeling somehow more sensitive back there than before, his hole puckering against the open air. Why? Why would it do something like that? Why would he even be thinking about that?
Whatever the reason was, it was in his head and he couldn’t quite get it out. Even as the blankets bunched up between his thighs, grinding up against his ass, it almost felt like something licking between his cheeks. He groaned, arching his back, panting with his tongue lolling out of his mouth as he felt that pleasure growing. That heat, that need, it was so impossibly strong, and he just…he needed…
He whimpered as he kept thrusting, trying everything that he could to push himself to get off, but every time that he was right on that edge, he just couldn’t get over. He tried humping the blankets. He tried jerking himself again. He tried leaning down and licking the tip of his cock, something that he was only just able to do and usually did the trick.
Nothing worked, not even that.
“Nnngh…mmmph…”
He panted, shifting his position again, sitting in a puddle of his own juices as he kept dripping, his balls relentlessly churning. Everything that he tried only smeared more of his scent and his musk around the bed, almost like some brutish animal that couldn’t help but be dirty. He whimpered as he brought his feet up, pressing them together around either side of his cock. It was something, rough and pleasurable at once as he humped between the soles, grinding against his arches.
“Ah…ah…”
That was almost better. Almost, so close, so very, very close. He whimpered, drumming his toes around the tip of his shaft.
“Nnngh…”
He was right there, right on the edge, but his body was already slowing down. It was as if all the edging the chemicals had done had done something to his head, too, or his body. He wasn’t allowed to push himself further. He was conditioned to hold off, his body no longer allowed to take itself over the edge. Someone else…
Someone else does that now, he thought.
He didn’t know where that thought came from, but it was right there, burning at the front of his brain. It was right, too. Even now, his hips were slowing down, his feet as stained as his bed.
“Nnngh…”
Tap, tap. Someone at the door. Before he could answer, it opened, and the human walked in.
“Ah, I see that the collar is already affecting you again.”
“Mmmph…what…why can’t…I need to…”
“You will, eventually.”
“Mmmph…why not…now?”
“Because you are not yet Domesticated.”
The human approached, and as Ekundayo tried to push himself to his feet, the collar pricked him again. Another dose of the aphrodisiac slammed into him, knocking him down a peg or three, sending him right into that needy headspace once more. His cock throbbed, spitting pre-cum across his chest, hitting him in the cheek and then running down along one exposed nipple. As he gasped for breath, the human sat at the foot of the bed.
“I will see to it that you are properly trained. By the time that I’m done, you will find someplace to call home. Someone to call Master. Someone that will probably find you more useful than you currently find yourself, as a matter of fact.”
“Mmmph…”
“But until then, you will do as I say. And that means that you will take the privileges afforded to you, and no more. For now, that means no orgasm. But…it does not preclude further pleasure.” The human chuckled. “I have yet to indulge myself with one of your species. It will be interesting to do so. Roll over.”
