After Kelsie finished the milk, Pete gently dried her muzzle with a cloth.
“There now, that wasn't so bad, was it?"
Kelsie's glare spoke volumes.
“Oh, come on, okay, you're not a fawn, I know that, but, you got to admit, it must have brought back sweet memories for you, how I'd lay you in my arms and nurse you with a bottle and teat, tickle your little chest and belly and how you'd squirm and bleat..."
Kelsie's anger slowly drained away, before she hung her head and sighed.
“You could just put it in a bowl for me... It's so humiliating, drinking like a fawn..."
Pete's smile faded, as he turned away, then rinsed out the teat and bottle, letting it dry in the dish rack.
“Fine, if you promise you'll drink it, I won't humiliate you anymore my love, I'm sorry, I should have been more considerate and asked you."
Sensing his disquiet, Kelsie moved up behind him and timidly rubbed her head against his leg.
“I'm sorry..."
Pete placed his hands on the counters edge, then turned about, crouched and gently took her muzzle in his hands as he leaned his forehead against hers.
“No, no, my dear, sweet doe, its me who apologises. I've been, just so tied up lately with our fawn and – everything – I feel I've neglected you and now, I'm treating you like you're some... pet or domesticated deer who must obey my every wish and demand! Such is not what you deserve my love, truly. It is I who apologises to you Kelsie..."
With a sniff, Kelsie timidly licked his chin, before she glanced over a the fawn then back at Pete.
“May I have my breakfast, please?"
“Of course sweetheart, give me just a moment to make it."
Kelsie watched as Pete sliced up assorted vegetables, fruits and her nose twitched as she smelt the rich, sweet scent of strawberries.
“Are those..." Kelsie murmured, as she reared up awkwardly, her front hooves clattering on the counter as she stood up, her hind legs trembling.
“Hey!" Pete squealed, then giggled and carefully moved behind her and lifted her front legs up and set her back down gently. “Yes, they are, and they're getting very hard to get! Now, be patient!"
Kelsie sulked petulantly, then went and laid on the mat whilst she waited as Pete prepared a breakfast for her. After nearly ten minutes, he carried over the tray and set it before her. Kelsie's eyes widened as she looked down at the assortment of fruits and vegetables, then looked up at him.
“I can't possibly eat all this..."
“You can, and you will – now, come on, you won't get better if you don't eat..."
*
After an hour, Kelsie moaned and pushed aside the empty tray with her nose. Her belly swollen like she was with fawn, Kelsie gurgled and shuddered.
“Food coma?" Pete sniggered.
A moan come from Kelsie as she lifted her head, sighed and let it slump back onto the floor again.
Pete chuckled and knelt down, then carefully slid his arms under Kelsie and lifted her up, grunting softly as he stood.
“I'm...not that...heavy - “ Kelsie mumbled, her eyelids starting to slide down as sleep claimed her.
“You're not a little fawn anymore my love, now, come on, I'll take you back to bed, you can sleep it off..."
“Sleep...what..." Came her quite mumble.
Pete didn't have the heart to tell her he'd slipped a few tranquillisers into her breakfast. He just cradled her gently and carried her to their shared bedroom and lay her sleeping form down on the bed.
“Sleep my beloved," Pete murmured, as he stroked her neck gently. “You're alright, you're safe and warm..."
“Safe..." Kelsie mumbled, as she opened one eye to a mere slit, then it closed again.
“Yes my love, you're safe..."
Pete lay with her, until she was in a deep, restful sleep. Gazing down at her, he felt his love and compassion for this sweet, somewhat naive young doe fill him.
“You're safe, I promise..." Pete whispered, as he knelt on the bed and caressed her flank gently.

Kelsie slept the day and the night, making Pete fear he might had overdone the tranquillisers, but the next morning, Kelsie snorted and dragged herself out of the drug induced slumber. Her head lifted off the pillow on which it lay, her widely spaced eyes blinked and squinted before she yawned wide enough to nearly dislocate her jaws.
“Urgh...thirsty - “ Kelsie murmured, before she awkwardly clambered off the bed and stumbled into the kitchen.
Drinking about half the bowl of water Pete had left out for her, Kelsie's next urges drove her outside – her bladder suddenly demanding her attention.
Stumbling off the patio, Kelsie walked a few paces out onto the cold, wet dew covered grass before her hind knees folded and she sighed in relief as the pain from her bladder subsided. Blinking, Kelsie looked around, the first rays of the new day dawning and she yawned again then shook her head, her black tipped ears snapping from side to side.
“Too early..." Kelsie grumbled, then headed back inside.
Checking on the sleeping fawn, Kelsie watched her for about fifteen minutes, feeling both love and apathy in equal measure.
I carried you, birthed you...yet why...
Kelsie frowned and thought.
I both love and despise you little one... I pray, that this will change, that I can become the mother and protector you will need...for it may not be today, it might not be for years to come – when you are an adult and have fawns of your own...
A chill rippled down Kelsie's back and she sniffled, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill from her brown eyes.
You are a Therian, like me... One day my dear, sweet, innocent fawn – those people might come for us again...
I only pray we never have to face that day...
Giving her fawn a gentle lick to the face, Kelsie shuddered and quietly clopped her way back to the bedroom and up onto the bed, where she snuggled in close against Pete.
“Whu...Kel..." Come his sleepy inquiry.
“Yes...Pete - “ Kelsie whispered, as she licked his neck. “Go back to sleep..."
Pete's arm slid around Kelsie's shoulder, then he pulled her tight against him, as he nuzzled at her neck and almost instantly went straight back to sleep.
Kelsie lay there, one front leg crushed tight against her, the other draped over Pete's ribs, her head coming to rest on top of his as she closed her eyes and tried to push away the dark thoughts that began to fill her mind.
Sleep would be a long time coming, for this scared, frightened young doe.
