After handing the mark over to the two guards, Rockruff was walking around and looking at the various highlights of the kingdom.

He could see that they had a lot of hard working pokemorphs in the area, carrying cargo, selling their wares, offering services, it certainly wasn't bad to live here.

The kingdom was separated into several districts that had a specific highlight.

A market district, residential district, a play area, gardens, an arena, and most important and obvious of all, a castle.

"Wow... This place isn't so bad, maybe city life could be for me one day" Rockruff muttered as he walked and explored the place.

His wanderlust got the better of him as he explored most of the gardens, play area, and the residential districts... Causing the sun to set soon.

The gardens housed many natural plants and were popular with all the grass, poison, fighting, bug, and flying types who lived, many had strolled past that area for a leisurely walk or jogged in circles around the place to exercise. Some were even just there to sniff the flowers and rest at one of the many benches

The play area had many facilities that would make young pokemorphs want to ditch their chores in favor of playing near the fountain or climbing the monkey gym. Rockruff noticed that most of the pokemorphs that enjoyed the area were water types and normal types, though mixed in with several others.

The residential district, as expected, had lots of pokemorphs living in... With some of the houses still up for sale. Rockruff thought about buying one of them, and looked at the notice price of one of the houses that was up for sale.

"T-Thirty thousand poke!? That... I can't pay for this!" Rockruff said as he looked at the notice, feeling discouraged from buying a house here in the first place.

"No... I WILL get my own house here one day! I just have to work hard..." Rockruff tried to encourage himself... And realized it was getting darker and darker by the minute.

"Oh... Oh no... I... I have to find somewhere to sleep in!" Rockruff said as he looked all over at the residential areas to sleep in but found that none of them had any inns.

"No... This is bad... I might get arrested for loitering..." Rockruff was growing desperate as it got darker and darker.

Then it hit him, the inn wasn't in the residential district, it was in the market district! Of course!

Rushing over to one of them, he looked around and the innkeep was at the counter with many other pokemorphs drinking, gossiping, and eating inside. The smell of the food around him reminded himself that he hadn't eaten all day because of his excitement, but it had been worth it to see what the beautiful kingdom had to offer.

The whole place was made entirely of wood, not that he minded, it had a certain charm to it that made it feel like he was at home and the ambience was surely welcoming.

Going to the innkeeper, he first wanted to see if he could afford anything to eat.

"What can I get you young lad?" The snorlax asked.

"I'd want to stay for the night, how much for a room?" Rockruff asked him.

"100 poke a night for the cheapest room, it has a bed, a bathroom, a closet, maybe some creaky floors if you don't mind, everything you need to spend the night over and get yourself ready to leave first thing in the morning. And 500 poke if you want the deluxe room, the difference is the bed is bigger, the bath has hot water, a bigger closet, and the floorboards make no noise with the addition of the room being soundproof" the snorlax explained to him.

He looked at his coin purse and he only had 50 poke with him, making him feel frustrated.

"Well... How much for any of the food you're offering?" Rockruff asked the snorlax, hoping he could afford something extra tasty for the night at least.

"Check the menu" The snorlax told him.

He looked up to see that the menu's items were atrocious.

Plate sized lava cookie - 80 poke

Rare Candy - 100 poke

Rage Manju - 60 poke

Berry Juice - Varies depending on flavor (90-120 poke)

Moomoo Milk - 80 poke

Bearticone - 65 poke

Malasada - 75 poke

The list went on and on and nothing within 50 poke was found, making Rockruff's stomach growl hungrily.

"Don't you have anything that fits 50 poke? I came all the way here but I don't have a job yet" Rockruff said as he just wanted something to eat.

"Well... We have some leftovers, you can eat them for free" the snorlax said as he pointed at some slop of mixed leftover food.

Feeling sick to his stomach, he didn't want to even entertain that notion so he declined.

"Sorry.... N-Not interested..." Rockruff said, losing a bit of his appetite.

"Well you can stay and sleep on this counter if you like, I can't provide charity for anybody in here" the snorlax said as he got back to work.

Feeling annoyed at the terrible hospitality and the ridiculous prices, he left the inn in search for another that would fit his budget but saw an opportunity.

The market district was closed down by now, most of the stores had already closed except for one, the blacksmith. The blacksmith's silhouette could be seen putting away his hammer and anvil inside, and was about to close the shop down with the metal gates by pulling down on it.

Rockruff didn't need to tell himself twice and ran over to the dim lighting of the blacksmith.

"Wait!" Rockruff ran over and nearly made it past the metal gate as the pokemorph brought it down, with the blacksmith looking at him in annoyance.

"Beat it kid, I'm not giving handouts" the gruff and deep voice of the pokemorph tried to dissuade him from staying.

"S-Sorry... But I need a job! You're a blacksmith right? Can you please give me a job? I... Uh... I can be your apprentice! Please teach me how to smith! I need money so badly! The inns are too expensive and-" Rockruff tried to plead.

"No" was all the pokemorph said as he lifted the metal gate back up.

"Please... I'm starving... And I have no bed to sleep in" Rockruff continued to beg.

"Then go back to your parents youngling" the pokemorph continued.

"I don't have anyone I can trust here! Please!" Rockruff begged again.

The pokemorph sighed and finally brought the metal gate down.

"Fine then little one. If you're going to be my apprentice, don't expect me to go easy on you. And don't you quit just because I yell at you from time to time, you want to work for me? Then you better get used to my rules, and the only way you'll be getting money from me is if the customers actually buy what you made, and if you complain to me about how I treat you, you can forget about being my apprentice in the first place" the pokemorph told him.

Rockruff was starting to regret this seemingly abusive employment he got himself into, but there was no turning back now! If he can make weapons with this guy's help, he'll make the best weapons and armor he could if it meant getting stronger... But he had to find the legendary dogs too, if this employer of his lets him.

"I accept! Mr... Uh... What's your name?" Rockruff asked the dark silhouette.

The figure walked forward a little bit, his face finally showing in the light.

"Entei" Said the legendary dog.

Rockruff was surprised by what he saw, he had stumbled upon one of the legendary dogs he had been seeking out.

"I... I'm Rockru-" But before Rockruff could finish his sentence, Entei already began walking upstairs.

"H-Hey! I'm not finished introducing myself!" Rockruff yelled after him.

"And I don't care. We're not friends in any way and if you're going to be my apprentice then we don't need to know more about each other" Entei scowled at him.

Rockruff didn't know that for a fire type, Entei was... cold.

Still though, his new teacher had now taken him in, and if he was going to survive in the city, he was going to have to earn his respect first if he was going to earn the right to train under him.

Rockruff hurried after him, going from the workshop and into the bedroom, convenient for a blacksmith to go to and fro in the morning and at night.

Rockruff looked at the blacksmith's bedroom, observing the room that the grumpy legendary had resided in. After all, his mother told him that he can get to know someone with how their bedroom was organized.

The bedroom was what you'd expect out of a blacksmith, pretty simplistic but with other accommodations you'd expect.

There were ingots and ores placed on the shelves, probably for emergencies when there's shortages of what materials he needed. As well as hanging racks for the different tools that Entei used, all sorts of different sized hammers and some tongs lined up the rack. Rockruff figured these were just placed here in case his other tools broke or went missing, which were common occurrences some blacksmiths did.

Entei had small lamps hanging on the ceiling, and lit them as well as the sconces left on the wall, he figured that they were made from the bone of a gogoat, or rhydon, or any other horned pokemorph in the area that might have been broken... Hopefully not by him.

Now that he got a better look at Entei, he had brown fur just as the rumors said, but much more different in body structure than what he had heard. Instead of the purely muscular body that he expected from the stories he heard, he saw a body that would be described as a mix of both fat and muscular.

His arms were thick, and he had a big chest that you could probably bury your face in, mixed with a large musclegut, he had the look of someone who was used to brawling and drinking in public, as well as someone who had a short temper. His legs was the same way, thick and heavy looking from the way it looked.

Rockruff blushed as the legendary took his sweaty shirt off, revealing his bare body for him to see, and the musk and sweat that he could smell, he just wanted to run over and cuddle with him.

"Hey!" Entei said angrily at him.

Rockruff shook his head as he realized he had been looking at him the whole time, he had completely been hypnotized by the stripping Entei made that he was caught in a trance for a few seconds.

"I said this is where you'll be sleeping" Entei pointed down onto the floor.

Rockruff looked down to see that Entei was pointing at a bedroll.

"But... Can't I sleep next to you?" Rockruff asked him, which Entei scoffed at.

"And didn't you volunteer to be my apprentice? I didn't take you in to be my equal. You'll get what you're given, and you're not entitled to my hospitality" Entei said and laid down on the bed as he drifted to sleep quickly.

Rockruff sighed.

Compared to Suicune, Entei was boiling hot and freezing cold at the same time, and unlike Suicune, he wasn't too welcoming of guests or in this case, an apprentice. Still, Rockruff believed he could soften his heart and earn his respect one day, and maybe, just maybe, Entei would treat him better too.

With a ray of hope in his eyes, he laid down on the bedroll, which wasn't too comfortable, but was much more preferable than trying to sleep on a barstool with many loud voices all over him.

...

"Hey... Hey... Wake up" Rockruff tried to get more sleep as he rolled over, not wanting to get up just yet.

He felt someone's foot lightly kicking him awake.

"Wake up or else I'm going to kick you out of my apprenticeship!" The now angered, deep voice of Entei threatened him.

Rockruff jumped out of his bedroll, feeling groggy and sleepy from having to wake up abruptly at such an early hour.

"Took your sweet time waking up, now take your bath before I decide to fire you" Entei ordered him as he went downstairs, he could hear people filling in some orders already.

"Damn... Is this really how early we have to wake up?" Rockruff muttered to himself before going to the bathroom in Entei's bedroom, before going downstairs once he finished.

He saw Entei hammering away at a blade, sparks appearing each time he hit away at the heated iron on the anvil.

Rockruff didn't know what to do and decided to stand close to him and watch as he did.

Entei continued to hit the blade and after a few more strikes, held the blade piece with some tongs and dipped them in water, cooling the metal and making it harden. The next few steps consisted of fitting the pommel, the handle, and the blade together, before one final step was next, putting it on the grindstone and sharpening it.

Several sparks flew to the side as the blade was sharpened, and while Rockruff was watching, he admired how satisfying it looked, and how impressive it was that Entei was able to sharpen it with such skill.

As the blade polishing stopped, Entei was about to start another one, not even paying attention to Rockruff.

Rockruff felt like he wasn't even doing much so he decided that he'll want to try it.

"I... I'll do it! I'll make the next sword!" Rockruff blurted out, eager to learn from the legendary.

Entei looked at him with a glare, as if asking if he was serious.

Rockruff's confidence faltered as Entei gave him that stare, as if he just made a big mistake to interrupt him.

Entei grumbled before placing a brittle, misshapen nail that was on the heating furnace and placing it down on the anvil and handing a hammer to him.

"You're too inexperienced just from looking at your pathetic face. If you really think you got what it takes, then hit this nail. I don't think I need to tell you how a nail would look like" Entei told him, crossing his arms as he observed how the runt would perform.

Rockruff gulped, thinking this was his chance to show that he was worthy of being trained.

He took the hammer, holding the nail still as he tried to strike it, hitting it lightly due to not wanting his fingers from getting hit.

Entei grumbled in annoyance, making Rockruff panic a bit.

"Hit it harder, you're hitting it like a mother hits a child!" Entei yelled angrily at him, causing Rockruff to feel fear as he tried his best to hit it again this time.

The strike sent the nail flying on the floor which Rockruff quickly picked up

"By Areceus boy! Were you raised this stupid!? Hold it tightly!" Entei's growing anger couldn't be more scary to him as he held the nail tightly and tried to strike... Making the nail bend in the wrong direction.

"Are you messing with me? Do you think this is a game!? The nail is about to cool down and you haven't even made a dent to it!" Entei yelled in his ear, causing Rockruff to form tears in his eyes.

"I-I'm trying my best!" Rockruff tried to tell him.

"Your best is not enough! If you're going to keep insisting on being my apprentice, you're going to straighten that nail! Don't bother coming back to me unless you shape that nail right!" Entei told him, as he went to another anvil on the other side of the shop and started hammering again on a new sword.

Rockruff wiped his tears, he didn't know a legendary could be this scary and mean at the same time, but he couldn't give up, he had to get stronger.

Rockruff tried to straighten the nail, but all his attempts were stricken with more failure than he thought. He hit one of his fingers a few times, sent the nail flying onto the floor which made the task difficult since he had to find it for a few minutes sometimes, or the strike would be too weak.

After a few more groans of pain and extreme effort on his part, he finally did it, he shaped a nail perfectly.

He excitedly ran over to Entei and showed him the nail.

"I... I did it! I shaped the nail correctly!" Rockruff told him, his tail wagging in excitement, anticipating that he would be given a much better task like making armor or swords.

"Good... Now shape all these next" Entei pointed at a small box of nails on a table, it looked to be a handful of them considering the box could be held with one hand.

"B-But... But I want to learn how to make a sword!" Rockruff pleaded.

"And I want to have an apprentice that doesn't bitch about anything that he doesn't understand yet!" Entei yelled now angrier than before.

Rockruff whimpered, shakily taking the box on the table, not wanting to get yelled at again.

He felt hungry... So hungry... He didn't even have breakfast yet, or even dinner last night. He thought his life was going to be easier under Entei but it felt a bit abusive under him.

Hours passed and the heat was getting to him, not only was the furnace hot with how he needed to place the nails and heat them up before striking them with a hammer, but it was also exhausting how he took several minutes with just one.

It was night time by now and he was only halfway through the box, if he just could finish them all, and somehow someone decided to buy some nails... Maybe he could finally get to eat...

Meanwhile, Entei didn't trust Rockruff one bit, he had closed up and left the pup who was still stuck with such a simple task... Still he didn't want the young pup to die, he didn't want to be mean but his temper got the better of him.

Entei was well aware of how short his temper was, and he didn't like himself because of that. He thought that he could at least feed him, he didn't like apologizing but the pokemorph annoyed him with how cheerful he was.

Thinking back on the pup's face, he couldn't remember the last time he ever smiled, he was always frowning and always misunderstood by others. Maybe he should share his food with him instead of making him earn his own... He sighed knowing how cruel his method was, thinking that would have incentivized anybody working under him to work harder.

He decided to give him some of his own cooking he made while Rockruff was busy, some steak that he made, he was going to give it to him once he was done with the box but he at least deserved it with how much he was making him work for it... Or the lack of substantial progress at least.

Entei came downstairs to give Rockruff his meal.

"You can stop now, you're not making progress with...!" Entei was surprised by what he saw, then felt terrible.

Rockruff had fainted and collapsed on the floor, his body was sweaty, along with his clothes.

Entei immediately rushed over, trying to snap Rockruff awake.

"Hey! Hey kid! Wake up!" Entei tried to make him give any sort of reaction.

Rockruff was hot... Hotter than he thought. The temperature was higher than that of a normal pokemorph's, and he realized his mistake. Rockruff wasn't a fire type, sure he was a rock type but the fur wasn't helping him from the heatstroke that would eventually occur while exposed to the metal furnace.

Entei had to take responsibility for what he did, and took Rockruff to his bed

Rockruff soon woke up on Entei's bed, not remembering what happened earlier last night.

"Ngh... M-My head..." Rockruff tried to get up but was pushed back down on the bed.

He looked up to see Entei was the one who forced him back on the bed

"Idiot... You should have told me that you were having a heatstroke, or asked me for a glass of water. Now I'm forced to take care of you" Entei said with a bit of bitterness, although Rockruff could see a distinct hint of guilt and remorse.

"But you told me not to come back to you until I finished shaping the box of nails!" Rockruff told him.

"Obviously you shouldn't have taken it literally boy. You act like you never got yelled at before" Entei scolded him.

"I... I haven't" Rockruff admitted to him.

"Hmph... Your parents have no backbone at all... Here, after shaping at least half of those nails all morning till night, I suppose you can eat now" Entei handed him a plate of steak with some berry juice.

Realizing he was still hungry, Rockruff took the plate and ravenously ate it, he was starving, and thirsty, he got himself a bit messy along with the bed as splatters of the steak and berry's juices splattered the bed a bit.

"Damn it boy! Hasn't your parents taught you any manners?" Entei asked him with an annoyed look.

"S-Sorry... I didn't get to eat for two nights... I couldn't think about it" Rockruff said, his ears drooping down a bit.

Entei sighed.

"I guess I can't blame you, if you were starving, its my fault I didn't even bother to feed you at the time" Entei admitted, trying not to let his anger get the better of him.

Rockruff giggled a bit, which Entei found weird, he may have been holding his anger back but the little one was laughing?

"What is so damn funny? I yelled at you, made you cry, starve, get a heatstroke, and now you're laughing?" Entei said

"Because deep down inside you're actually gentle and caring, you're not that mean" Rockruff explained to him.

"What? You don't really mean that, don't get ahead of yourself' Entei tried to deny his ideas.

"Well I think so! Because there's no way I would try to find a legendary like you to train me if you weren't nice" Rockruff insisted.

"Wait... Find? What do you even mean?" Entei asked.

Rockruff realized that he revealed more than he realized, and hoped he wouldn't get angry for that reason.

"I... I wanted you to train me! I didn't mean to become your blacksmith apprentice but in truth, I wanted you to train me!" Rockruff declared.

"Train you...? That's... I don't train anybody" Entei tried to decline.

"But you do want to make it up to me right? After what you made me go through?" Rockruff tried to guilt him into training him.

"Hey! You insisted that you'll be my apprentice! Not me!" Entei said angrily.

"Well you didn't have to be mean about it. So you owe me!" Rockruff tried to force him to.

"You demanding little... Fine, if you can prove your worth to me tomorrow I'll let you, but you still have to finish those box of nails" Entei said back at him.

Rockruff looked at him, a ray of hope coming out of his eyes, and glomped at him.

Entei was surprised by the hug, but rolled his eyes and hugged back.

"Don't take this the wrong way but I'm not going to go easy on you just because you're being affectionate on me" Entei said dismissively.

"I know, but it's just my dream to become strong with the help of all three of you" Rockruff said.

"All three...? You mean... You were not only looking for me?" Entei asked.

"Yes, if I'm going to be stronger, I'm going to have to get stronger by letting all three of you train me. Suicune trained me already and then I met you!" said Rockruff.

"... You're ambitious. And you managed to convince him to finally come out of his cabin?" Entei asked again.

"Yes, it was really tough to force him, he was so lonely and he wanted me to stay after training with him. He saved me when I drowned in the lake and then agreed to train me. And I managed to defeat him too!" Rockruff informed Entei.

"You? Defeat him? You're just making things up to impress me aren't you?" Entei asked him.

"No I'm not! I'm serious!" Rockruff tried to argue.

"Suuuuuure" Said Entei, not fully convinced about it.

"You can ask him yourself!" Rockruff said, now more angry.

"Relax, you can prove it to me tomorrow" Entei shrugged off any further attempts at convincing him as he left to go downstairs to get back to his shop.

Rockruff huffed, not satisfied at Entei's unconvinced state, he tried to get up but found himself still tired, he noticed just now that he had an ice bag on his head, probably from getting sick.

Rockruff promised himself he wouldn't lose to Entei and prove that he isn't just an ordinary rock type. When he gets better, he'll definitely not pass up the chance to defeat him.

*a few days passed*

Rockruff had gotten better, and as Entei woke up, he was gone from the bed.

"Ngh... Where the hell did he go?" Entei grumbled, realizing that Rockruff had gotten up much earlier than him.

Entei got up and saw Rockruff hammering away at something.

"Boy, what are you doing messing with my tools?" Entei asked him as he tried to look at what he was exactly smithing.

"S-Sorry, I thought that now that I'm better I could at least try to get some practice in" Rockruff said as he hid whatever he was hitting with the hammer behind his back.

"Practice? Boy, I'm going to see what you're really made of. No smithing or practice will happen today" Entei told him, he was actually curious about what he was capable of and if he really spoke the truth about defeating Suicune.

"Wait... You mean you'll start training me?" Rockruff asked, his tail wagging and excited.

"Yes little one, I will be seeing how well you do in a real fight. I will not hold back, and don't say I didn't warn you. Type advantages aren't everything. Now, let's take a bath, we'll need to be fresh and ready, we will see if you really are telling the truth" Entei told him as he went upstairs to take a bath.

"_Finally... I'll get to fight Entei this time... I hope I'll be able to prove myself, and maybe I'll get to see just how serious he can get... He is pretty scary to look at from the way he glares and sounds, I just hope he doesn't get angry while we fight" _Rockruff thought before psyching himself up for the fight.

Rockruff and Entei were standing in the plains, the grassy, windy area made for a wide battlefield with the occasional boulders that jutted from the ground which could be used for good covers Rockruff could even see Suicune's cabin from a short distance, although now was not the time to reminisce about him or think about him. Today, he was going to defeat Entei, and show him what his determination is really made of.

"I see that you're ready now based on your stance" Entei told him as he crossed his arms.

"You bet that I can win! I hope that gut of yours doesn't make you feel rusty" Rockruff said, trying to taunt Entei.

"Don't get cocky, you're talking too soon for someone who hasn't seen my power yet" Entei said as he brought out two hammers.

"Hey! No fair! I want some swords to use!" Rockruff yelled.

"Swords? Oh these hammers? I'm not gonna use these on you, they're just tools for me to enhance my power" Entei explained.

"...Tools?" Rockruff wondered what he meant.

"Yes, tools, when I use them like THIS!" Entei yelled before he used two fire spins on the hammers he was wielding and he saw two mini tornados circling the hammers, slowly growing red from how hot they were.

"I-I didn't know fire moves could be THAT hot!" Rockruff exclaimed.

"Then you should know that I can also use them to do this!" Entei yelled as he then smashed the hammers onto the ground.

Rockruff was confused before he saw the ground making a mini earthquake like how a diglett would use magnitude, except there was burning hot magma coming from the ground.

"...!" Rockruff used a stone edge in time, making a large chunk of rock jut out of the ground under him before he could be swallowed by the fiery fissure.

"T-That was close!" Rockruff gasped in fear of being swallowed by the mini earthquake.

Entei wasn't done with his assault and fired off a flamethrower in his direction.

"A-Ah!" Rockruff quickly jumped away from the boulder, nearly being seared by the attack as he landed and rolled away near a boulder, putting out the fire that his own tail got caught in.

Despite his type advantage, they still had a big gap in terms of their power level, and Entei wasn't kidding when he said he was going all out on him.

"Is this really what you accomplished from Suicune? Running away? How pathetic" Entei taunted him further as he began walking to the boulder.

As he walked toward the boulder , he thought he saw a faint glimmer near it but paid it no mind.

"You can give up anytime you want a break, you're not fit to even land a hit on me... Come to think of it, I never even told you how you'll win. I'm gonna take it easy on you so if you manage to land a hit on me, I'll maybe take pity on you and teach you... If you beg that is" Entei declared as he neared the boulder.

Rockruff gritted his teeth angrily, he may be scared of him but he didn't intend to ever even beg him. He'll win the way he wants by defeating him. Suicune gave him that leisure because he was nice, but Entei was arrogant in his abilities even though he was mean... Rockruff intended to fix that.

As Entei went around the boulder, he saw Rockruff crouched behind it, and he smirked, intending to scare and taunt him... Until several rocks appeared from the ground than he could count.

"W-What!?" Entei yelled in surprise as he looked at the rocks and realized that Rockruff had set up a trap with stealth rock as they all came rushing at him.

Acting quickly, Entei used fire spin, making the rocks melt before they could get to him, turning them into molten rocks that grazed his fur harmlessly as he wiped them away.

"Hmph... You caught me off guard I'll give you that boy... But this ends...!" Entei couldn't continue to speak as Rockruff had disappeared from the spot.

"W-Where..." Entei looked around and couldn't find him.

"Over here!" Rockruff's voice said from above him.

Entei looked up to see at least five rock tombs heading toward him.

"You're not going to get me with petty tricks boy!" Entei yelled as he got bombarded by the rocks, causing dust to obscure Rockruff's vision as he landed back on the ground.

After the dust settled, all Rockruff could see were the scorched grass and rock tombs that landed on Entei, but not the legendary pokemon himself.

"Entei?" Rockruff said, worried he might have overdone it.

A few seconds later though, a large amount of lava erupted like a volcano, making him jump and back away as he slowly walked backwards.

It was Entei who had just used eruption, he was menacing looking as the bright red lava dropped down all around him.

"So you're going to play rough hm? Then let's play!" Entei yelled and slammed the hammers on the ground again.

Expecting him to use the same move again, he anticipated the fissure-like move again, but none came. Instead, a large gush of lava erupted from below him.

"Uwah!" Rockruff was surprised by the sudden eruption of flames from below him as he ran while Entei continued to make more flames erupt from beneath Rockruff as he ran.
