The rocky start of a rocky romance between a rat and a human.

This is a sort of prequel to my last story "Through the Muck", I decided to expand the story of these two characters and the world they inhabit, and eventually I plan on Through The Muck becomming it's own chapter in this larger story.

Two figures skittered across the rooftops of the great city of Sollenfurt, leaping their way across alleys and smaller streets. Their bare feet padded softly over the roof tiles as they navigated a complex maze to reach their destination, the large glass and steel structures many stories tall, brightly lit from the inside and out. The two figures stopped and dropped down into an alley a few dozen meters away. The taller of the two peeked around the corner, seeing the guards standing outside of the fence, before ducking back inside. It pulled its hood back, revealing the muzzle of a large female rat. It looked to its smaller companion, also a female rat, "Is it time yet, Tiktock?"

The other one pulled out a moldy tattered book, running a claw lightly over the surface. "A few moments...they will turn down the gas to let the plants sleep, then we can move." The other then sniffed the air, glancing at the taller rat. "Will you be good for this Pox? I smell your need."

The taller rat nodded and lowered down to her knees, "Yes, I'm fine...took some powder. I'll just go have some fun after," she said, getting some coal from her belt pouch and she began crushing it to powder between her hands and rubbing it into her fur to dull it's shine and darken patches of it further, before doing the same with chalk, giving her a mottled look that confused her outline. "Show me the plan again."

The smaller one nodded, "Okay, if you are sure," and flipped to another page in the book, showing a set of crudely scrawled maps. "You go up to the third level, and then to the back. Take few plants from each tray so they won't notice. Fill your bag, then come back here. Avoid the guards and police and don't get caught."

Pox nodded and then peeked around the corner yet again, watching as the lights in the grow house started to dim as the gas lamps were shut off for the night.

The smaller rat noticed as well, slapping the taller one on the tail, "Go, Pox, go! Before their eyes adjust and be careful! We don't need more attention from the humans!"

The taller one nodded, "Yes I know, in and out. I'll see you soon, Ticktock." She said and went around the corner, her tattered cloak billowing behind her as she moved, as silently as a ghost. She used her clawed hands and feet to scale one of the thick wooden posts that formed part of the fence around the building and avoided the remaining patches of light and the roaming guards in the yard. Pox had been on a number of these runs already, so finding her way into the building was easy.

She ducked into a shadowed corner to avoid a group of laborers as they made their way out of the building. They passed by her slowly in a line. One of them paused and wrinkled his nose for a moment, “Oy, what stinks?” he asked loudly, “Smells like shite.” One of the other men behind him shoved him forward. “Benny probably farted again on his way out, come on. I want a drink before I go home to the missus!”

Pox breathed a sigh of relief as they continued, and when the last man exited, pox caught the door as it swung closed, and quickly ducked inside the grow house, as the door closed behind her. She looked down at herself and sniffed at her fur. “I don’t smell that bad,” She muttered to herself, and then continued on.

Her path took her down a hall, avoiding a few side doors that she knew led to the break room and toilet facilities, and into the main chamber of the grow house. It was a cavernous space with floors upon floors and rows of metal walkways with hundreds of trays of growing plants sitting on tracks underneath bright lime lamps that made up for the lack of light from the dead sun to keep the plants growing. Pox moved to the side, and then up a couple of floors before, finally, she reached the walkway she was aiming for. She moved along the row of trays growing root vegetables and began her illicit harvest.

With the lamps off, the chamber was now illuminated only by the dim pilot lights of the gas powered lime lamps, and the mix of faint starlight and a hint of crimson moonlight shining through the glass ceiling several more levels above. The almost total darkness didn’t leave much light for the humans, but a rat like her could see clearly. She worked her way steadily along the row, slowly picking two or three random plants from each one. She pulled the roots from the soil and broke the leafy tops off before putting them into her bag. She then carefully brushed the dirt back in place to hide the disturbance in the soil, masking her theft.

She paused when she heard the creaking of rusty hinges and a bright light appeared below her. An older male human with wispy white hair, dressed in coveralls carrying a portable gas lantern made his way into the chamber on the ground level below her. He whistled some melody as he began working on the lights above the grow beds. Pox hissed softly to herself, having expected to be alone with time to work, and she sped up her pace, grabbing the rest of the plants that she needed, and being less careful about covering her tracks, before turning and creeping back along the narrow walkway.

Pox moved as slowly and carefully as she could, trying to keep the creaking of the metal walkway to a minimum in order to not alert the workman as he busied himself under the hoods of the grow lights, likely cleaning the reflective hoods and replacing worn out limes. As she passed another grow tray, her cloak caught on a pair of shears a careless worker had left behind and sent it clattering to the ground several stories below, making the rat freeze in her tracks.

The human workman paused in what he was doing and looked up, "Who's there?" he called out, and he adjusted the lantern, aiming the spot beam around up above him, catching the shape of Pox and light glittering off her eyes before she covered them. The work man kept the torch trained on her, and he began to shout loudly, "Thief! Thief!" and he brought a whistle hanging around his neck to his lips and he blew hard on it, letting out a shrill tone that echoed off the glass walls of the grow house.

Pox squealed loudly, and her ears tucked back from the tone hurting them. She wasted little time before adjusting her grip on the sack of vegetables, and she leaped off the platform she was on, timing her jump so she landed on the elderly workman. Pox stood at a good head above even the tallest of humans, and her body was thick with muscle and fat. The frail human didn’t stand a chance, and there was a sickening crunch of bone as he broke her fall. The rat quickly got to her feet, wincing at a twinge in her leg, before looking down and stomping on the human's neck as hard as she could, causing another snapping sound, and making sure he was dead. She then grabbed her bag and made her way back to the chamber's entrance just as the door opened and two guardsmen entered with batons at the ready.

Pox reacted quickly and threw her bag at one as she lunged for the other, feinting around his strike to counter with a slash of her claws across his face. He let out a yell and staggered back, "Ah! You fucking rat!" he said, as blood poured between his fingers. She then whipped around, striking the first guard in the chest with her thick tail, while also drawing her curved dagger in a reverse grip. She tried stabbing it into the guard's side below his ribs, but the blade caught on a chainmail vest under his uniform. While the blade barely pierced his flesh, the force of the blow staggered him enough for Pox to grab her bag and make a run for the hall.

There was another guard in the hall making his way toward the grow Chamber, also with a baton in hand. He was startled at the speed of the rat coming towards him and raised the club to defend himself as Pox slammed into him, tackling him to the ground. She screeched loudly in his face as she scrambled up off of him, scrambling to her feet before making her way out of the building. Once out in the yard she looked around before making a run straight for the fence.

"Tiktock!" she called out as she ran along the barrier looking for her companion. When she finally spotted the other rat running up to the fence, she threw the bag over it to them. "Run! Split up and meet back at the warrens!" Pox called to her before scrambling up one of the wooden posts again and leaping down the other side, rolling and jumping back to her feet.

Ticktock grabbed the bag, "I told you to be careful!" she screeched back, clutching the bundle of vegetables before backing into the alley and breaking off into a run back into the shadows.

After watching her go, Pox turned and called out, "Over here, stupid humans!" as more guards came around the building, rushing around to the main gate and out to follow her, blowing their whistles loudly to alert the constabulary. The rat then turned on her heels and ran, making sure they followed her and not Ticktock, and she made her way back into to the maze of alleys and side streets as she ran toward the river.

"Well surprise, surprise! I thought I'd find you here, moping as usual," a boisterous voice said, accompanied a moment later with a firm slap to the shoulder that pulled Paul out of his daydreaming. Though he could identify the man by voice alone he still looked up into the grinning wooly beard of one of his now former classmates.

"Good evening, Brice, have you been looking for me long?" he asked, giving a half grin as the other man settled into the booth with him, looking around the moderately crowded tavern. Brice and Paul couldn't have been more opposite. Paul was tall with long light brown hair, and a thin physique. Brice on the other hand was short and broad with black curly hair that he kept cut short just to avoid combing it, though Paul was sure he curled his beard on purpose.

"Not at all," Brice said settling into the seat, "I have known you too long to not know your prime hiding spots," he said looking at the plate in front of Paul before pulling it over with a meaty hand. Without an ounce of shyness, he scooped a spoon full of the meal and put it into his mouth. "Let's see here...white bean pottage, cooked with...nothing..." he said as he rolled the food around in his mouth in a mockery of a connoisseur, "And..." he plucked a crust from the plate examining it closely, "One? Two? No... three day old bread with just a hint of mold on it." He said tossing it into the bowl and pushing the lot back to Paul, "Tell me, does your father know your secret desire to live the life of pauper?"

Paul rolled his eyes, "Just because I prefer sup modestly with my own coin, it doesn't mean I don't enjoy the other fine trappings of a wealthy and well connected life," he said. He half-heartedly pushed the plate aside. "Besides, we all may as well get used to it, the way things are going everyone will be eating plain white beans morning noon and night. Other things take too long and are becoming less and less the trouble to grow, and imports are getting slimmer by the day."

Brice gave a grimace, "That and those thieving rats down below aren’t helping, I’m sure.” He said, then mused. “But if it is to be beans above all, well, perhaps that will be a good business opportunity for you Hawthorns. You can start selling nose plugs to offset the smell.”

Paul chuckled a bit at that as well, "You'll have to pass that idea on to my brother. He's the one minding that half of the family business now a days." He said.

Brice nodded at that, "Yes, I'll do that." He said, "So why are you here eating slop, and moping? You finished your studies, got your diploma. You are all set now."

Paul sighed and shrugged, "I don't know...really. I am all set. My father has had me apprenticing with him at Council meetings, he thinks I'm certain to replace him as Arbiter when he's ready to retire, just as he’s always wanted me to."

"Speaking of, where is the old man? I didn't see him at the ceremony earlier," Brice commented.

Paul waved a hand, "He's been at a city council meeting, some closed door thing, it has something to do with the church, but he's not at liberty to say what. It’s been the main issue on the docket for days."

Brice scratched his beard and nodded in thought, "Maybe they found themselves another Saint to torture. Or the one they had keeled over, finally."

Paul shook his head at Brice's open blasphemy, and he glanced around, relieved that no one seemed to be paying attention, "You shouldn't talk like that. The church and the Saints are very important to this city, it would be a terrible blow to everyone's morale if Lamber were to pass on without the church finding a successor."

"I know that, but it doesn't make what they do to the boy right. They should have stuck with digging graves to find their Holy Essence. Or just get it over with and stop lighting the damn stone every fortnight. It’s dark twenty six days a month, let it be dark the other two."

Paul frowned again, "Look, I don’t like the practice much either, but the sacrifice of Lambert in giving us light does boost everyone’s spirits, and we need all the boost we can get. Besides, it’s church business so we don’t really have a say in it."

Brice gave a sigh and then a nod, "Well, anyway, now that you have graduated your studies, I do think you'll be the best civil servant this city has ever seen." He said with a more earnest smile.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I don't know...I honestly kind of hate it." Paul said with a frown.

Brice gave a chuckle and slapped the table, "And that's why you'll be great at it," he said softly, leaning forward and pointing a finger straight at Paul, "You are the only man I have seen going for a career in city government who doesn't actually want the job. You don't even care about making a difference or any of the other bile getting spewed by those bright eyed politicians on the corner." Brice then leaned back in his seat, shaking his head, "No, you'll do everything with ruthless efficiency. None of this hemming and hawing and taking forever to get anything out of committee."

Paul shrugged, "If you say so. How about you though? Now that your classes are over, are you looking forward to a long boring career in botany?"

"Of course, now that you mention it," Brice said, smiling and putting his hands over his lap, "I had plenty of good experience in the laboratory. With a little time and the right setup, I think I can do a lot to boost the yields of food we can produce, maybe stave off the diet of mashed beans for a while yet. It will hardly be boring at all," he then frowned, "Also...on that subject..."

Paul waved a hand, "Report to my brother's office whenever you are ready to get your hands dirty, he'll put you to work straight away."

Brice grinned, "And I thank you for that little introduction. With your family backing me, pretty soon you'll be eating Brice Beans for every meal."

Paul pulled his plate back in front of him, "I'll stick with white for now," he said with a chuckle and grabbing his spoon.

The other man shook his head, stopping him, "I can't let you do that..."

Paul blinked, looking up at him, "Do what?"

Brice grinned wide again, "Why, eat that slop sober of course." He then waved down the waitress, "Bring us a bottle of Black Gin," he said.

Paul looked rather shocked at that, "Ugh...coal spirits? Even I think that stuff tastes dreadful,” he said.

Brice chuckled at that and shook his head, "Good thing we aren't drinking for taste then," he said as the bottle and glasses were put on the table. He pulled the cork and began pouring it, "Come on, you graduated today. You should celebrate that."

Paul picked up the glass, his nose burning from the fumes coming off of the synthetic alcohol, a few leftover byproducts of refining it from coal tar. He nodded, "I suppose you are right," he said, before clinking his glass with Brice and tossing back the liquid, his face contorting as it burned its way down his throat and chest. "Ugh...I swear this stuff is poison."

Brice snorted after swallowing his own cup, "Mm, yes, it is. But it's cheap and gets the job done." He grabbed the bottle and held it up, "Another?"

Paul tapped his glass on the tabletop, "As if you’d let me refuse."

With a splash of water, Pox's head broke the surface of the river and she hauled herself up out of the river, climbing up the stone wall that contained the waterway. She glanced around to make sure there were no humans around, before dashing across a street and into a dark alley. She took off her cloak and squeezed water out of it, then shook out her fur, sending black oily water raining onto the walls and cobblestones around her. The water had washed off the chalk and charcoal she had used earlier, leaving her fur a more uniform black color.

She put her worn patchwork cloak back on and looked around the alley, going deeper and around a corner, finding a dead end, though there was a stairway up to the second level of one of the buildings, and from there she could reach the roof to make her way back toward the area of the city near her home. For now, though, it was quiet. She had eluded the constables and the guards from the grow house for a good hour before she dove into the river. She continued the chase by leading them up stream, before ending it by ducking under and using the current to pass them and make her way back down toward the poorer end of town.

Pox figured they would take a few hours to either find her or give up, and that gave her time to deal with a more pressing need. Her body had burned through the herbal powders she had taken, and she was beginning to feel her breeding instincts flaring up. She backed into a corner and leaned against a wall, closing her eyes as she slipped a hand between her legs. She had to cover her muzzle and bite her lip to stifle a loud groan as her fingers brushed across her heated flesh, already dripping with arousal.

The rat gave a shudder as she pushed her fingers deep into herself, seeking out the pleasurable spots that only she knew. Her other hand moved to her breasts, and she began to pinch and pull at her nipple, causing more gasps from her. She lowered herself down until she was sitting on the ground in the alley, continuing to pleasure herself. Her cunt made lewd wet sounds as she worked her fingers in and out of herself, and she began to lose herself in her pleasure.

Suddenly there was the loud clanking of an old metal can hitting the wall in front of her, bouncing down and rattling as it rolled to a stop. The sudden sound caused the rat to freeze, her breath catching in a hiss as she listened, hearing the clacking of hard soled shoes on the stones as someone came down the alley. The rat pulled her cloak around herself and pressed into a corner, doing her best to blend with the shadows as a male human moved up into the corner with his back to her.

Pox's nose twitched as she caught the strong smell of alcohol, followed by her ears twitching as she heard a trickling sound as the human started to urinate against the side of the building. The rat stayed there quietly listening, her sensitive nose picking up the smell of the male. It sent a shudder through her, and it made her need grow stronger. She pondered for a few moments. She could satisfy herself with a human. He was smaller than her, and he was drunk, so he'd be easy to overpower. As his stream cut off, she decided to make her move. She shifted her position, and then pounced at him.

Paul grunted softly as he finished relieving himself in the alley, teetering slightly as he worked his pants back up. He and Brice had finished the bottle of gin, and then another after, and they were halfway through a third before they had been kicked out of the closing tavern and out onto the street. There they had parted ways, with Paul stumbling his way home on foot to get a little air. He didn't realize at first what had happened when the rat had grabbed him and bodily slammed him against a wall deeper into the alley. He felt a filthy hand covering his mouth and a cold blade pressed to his throat. His booze addled mind seemed to move at a glacial pace until the adrenaline hit him a moment later and his eyes went wide looking into the toothy maw of the rat.

Pox hissed at the human and pressed the blade of her knife more firmly against him. "You scream, you die, human!" she hissed softly in his ear, "You want live, yes?" she asked, her words simple and crude.

Paul shuddered as the rank smell of the rat's filthy hide and breath hit his nose causing his eyes to water, but he managed to give a slight but earnest nodding of his head.

Pox pulled her hand back, keeping the blade at his neck, "Pox need mate. You mate Pox. You good mate, you live. You bad mate, you die." she hissed again.

Paul shook his head slightly to avoid slitting his own throat, a look of confusion on his face. You...w-what? I don't..." he asked

Pox let out an annoyed screech, "Ugh. Stupid human, what was that word?" she asked, speaking her own tongue before stepping back, but blocking his exit from the alley. She then pointed at him. "You," then herself, "me," she then used her hands to make a lewd gesture she had seen humans make. "Mate."

Paul covered his mouth with his sleeve to try and block the stench from his nose, still shaking his head in confusion before suddenly it dawned on him "What...Sex? You want...to have sex?"

Pox nodded her head, "Yes! Sex! That word. You! Sex Pox, now!" she said waving her knife at him, "Clothes off. Hurry before guard come. We caught Pox kill you!" she said, hoping the threats would get things moving.

Paul gave a groan and closed his eyes, suddenly feeling violently ill at the thought of having sex with the creature before him. She smelled of layers upon layers of unwashed filth. But the threat of the knife, and the alcohol was enough to get him to comply with the command to lower his trousers, pushing them down, though he was quickly presented with another problem.

The rat was watching as the human removed his lower coverings, but he was in no shape to do what she needed. She reached out with her hand and grabbed onto his balls, squeezing them roughly, "Come, come! Make rise!" she commanded.

Paul let out a yelp as he was grabbed so suddenly and rudely by the rat and he squirmed in her grasp, moving his mouth again as he watched her hand smeared grime over his flaccid manhood. She stopped him with her other hand, holding his wrist in an iron grip. He shuddered hard, "Ugh...I...ah! Not so rough! I can't on command...besides you are...a filthy beast!" he groaned, his guts churning, before he suddenly pitched forward as he vomited his supper onto the rat in front of him.

Pox's response to the sudden upheaval was to wait for the human to finish before slapping him across the face, causing his head to snap to the side. "Stupid human!" she grumbled, still holding onto him as he clumsily wiped his mouth with his shirt sleeve. She didn't bother trying to clean herself up.

"It's not my fault!" he shuddered, groaning, and working his jaw to make sure she hadn't broken it.

The rat huffed again, looking down, her head moving from left to right and back again as she thought, before getting an idea. It worked on males of her species, maybe it would work on the human. She grabbed his neck with one hand and pushed him against the wall again while digging the fingers of her other hand back into her cleft. She collected some of her juices and smeared them over Paul's face, causing the human to squirm more in her grasp before vomiting again.

He coughed and sputtered as he cleared his throat, "Ugh. You filthy beast..." he groaned, "You aren't going to get what you want out of me..." he said panting, his face and eyes red now.

Pox shook her head, "Pox not give up. Can't." she hissed, "Need mate bad." She lowered herself down to her knees, holding the human's balls in one hand with her claws dangerously close to his tender flesh, before practically inhaling the human's flaccid cock into her mouth, closing her lips over it and lashing it with her tongue.

Paul let out a yelp, almost fearing she was going to bite it off, before giving a shudder and soft groan as she started sucking hard on him, making him wince as her sharp incisors brushed against his tender flesh. "Aah...please...careful with the teeth," he said.

Pox grumbled something in her throat but didn't stop. Her mouth was having an effect on him, and she could feel his member stiffening between her lips. She released the grip on his testicles and pressed the hand against his stomach, digging her claws into his skin and keeping him pinned to the wall while the other gripped at his leg as she continued to pleasure him.

Paul pressed back against the wall, needing no encouragement, wishing he could sink right through the stone like a specter to get away from the beast that was doing it's damnedest to get him aroused. He panted hard and had to stop himself from moaning despite himself. The rat was certainly talented at what she was doing, and before long his manhood was standing at full staff.

When Pox was satisfied at this, she pulled back and then used her grip to pull him down on top of her, before rolling quickly so that he was pinned under her larger body. She glared down at him as she squeezed his cock and lined it up, before slamming her hips down onto his firmly, letting out a gasp of pleasure. "Keep quiet...you go when Pox done." She hissed, starting to ride him hard.

Paul was thankful for the alcohol still in his system as he was slammed to the ground, dulling the pain from the tumble. He grunted as he rat started to ride his rod, but he nodded his head, stuffing his sleeve into his mouth to keep quiet.

The rat grunted and held onto his shoulders, keeping him pinned beneath her as her hips bounced up and down on him, riding him hard and fast, sending droplets of vomit falling back onto Paul's chest and stomach as she bounced her hips. She closed her eyes, paying little attention to the human beneath her as she made use of him, her tunnel squeezing firmly at his rod as she took it deep inside, feeling it satisfying her needs.

Paul was thankful his stomach was empty as the rat worked herself up and down his cock like that, her face was only inches from his and more of her feted breath washed over him as she panted out her lust into the air above him. Paul's guts continued to churn, but thankfully he had no heaves as he waited out the rat's orgasm.

Paul was also thankful that Pox didn’t have much stamina. After a few short minutes that seemed like hours for him, she finally pressed him deep inside and let out a loud screeching groan, her pussy milking and squeezing at him as she squirted her juices all over his crotch. She stayed there, grinding into him for several long moments before she was done. Then, as if to add insult to injury, she relaxed her bladder, urinating on the human and soaking him with her piss.

Paul's stomach did another summersault at that final humiliation, and he was left laying there, panting hard, before looking up at the rat as she lifted off of him. She brushed herself off before rifling through his pockets and finding his coin purse. She slipped it into her belt pouch and blew the human a kiss. "Payment for sex!" She said in a mocking tone, before collecting her dagger. She moved to the edge of the alley and looked out to the street beyond, before taking one last glance at the human and darting across the street.

As Paul sat up, he heard the loud splash as the rat hit the water of the river across the road. He quickly collected his clothing, standing up. He was mostly sober at that point, the shock of everything that had happened starting to hit him. He gave another shudder, and then made his way out onto the street, hurrying in the direction of home. He had hoped to catch a carriage on the way, but now that he was out of money, he had to make the journey on foot. He glanced in the direction of the river as he walked, "If I never see another rat in my life, it will be too soon."
