Poke U: Chemistry Lab

"And that class, is how Sigma Freud is important in psychotherapy. I know it was a lot for you today, but please read chapter 2 and prepare for the quiz. Other than that, if any of you have any questions, I'll be here for about 10 more minutes. Class is dismissed." Professor Leo bowed his head before his eyes momentarily glowed, using his powers to turn off the switch on his headset. He briefly looked at Rex's direction and gave him a slight smile before he noticed some students running up to him and bombarding him with questions from today's lecture.

Rex slowly packed his belongings into his backpack, before he turned his head and looked over at Nico. "Oh man, that was a lot to pack in today Nico. I know this is our third lecture, but Professor Leo expects so much from us."

Nico nodded his head. "Oui Oui, but at least this stuff is interesting. I know chapter two will start with early childhood education, so that will be something."

"Oh, you looked ahead already Nico?"

"It's the next page in the book Rex. I was just curious and saw the title, and it was also in our syllabus. But you fell asleep...so..."

Rex rolled his eyes. "Whatever Nico. Anyway, I have chemistry lab today, so it looks like I can't accompany you to your next class."

Nico stood up from his seat and used his vines to place his backpack on himself. "That's unfortunate, but hey, we still have this class together. Though, we should start heading to our next ones, don't want to be late."

Rex placed his backpack on himself as well. "You are right Nico. Let's go."

Rex and Nico headed off to their next class. Rex wanted to talk to Nico about his encounter with Professor Leo earlier today, but decided to save it for Heart first. I know I should tell Nico about the Professor, but I feel that Heart should hear from me first. Maybe I'll tell him and Nocturne later tonight at dinner. Instead, the two just talked about how the class went and what they wanted to eat for dinner. Upon reaching the chemistry building, Rex waved farewell to Nico as he entered the building and headed straight for the lab.

After walking up two flights of stairs, Rex managed to find his classmates all congregating outside of the room. Rex spotted Heart and rushed over to his side. "Hey there Heart!"

Heart smiled and gently patted Rex on his shoulder. "Sup Rex, how was psychology with Professor Leo? You didn't fall asleep again, did ya?" Heart chuckled a bit on the last question.

"Shut up Heart. I swear, both you and Nico think alike. But it was fine, I'm still getting used to classes, but it's all good. By the way...can I pull you aside real quick?"

Heart tilted his head slightly, but nodded. "Umm...sure Rex." Heart and Rex walked over a few feet from the others as Heart gave Rex his full, undivided attention. "What's up."

Rex took a big breath. "It's about Professor Leo."

Heart's facial expression changed to a more solemn look. "Oh...go ahead then Rex. I'm all ears."

Rex explained to Heart about his office hour with Leo. He informed him how Luna was also there as well, and the conversations that occurred in the room. Rex also explained that everything will be kept confidential on the professor's part, but whatever Rex chose to tell was his own doing. Rex further told Heart about all of the friends and professors he has interacted with. After Rex finished, Heart crossed his arms in deep thought, tapping his sharp claw against his wrist.

"Hmm, I see Rex. Well, I am glad that you yourself is alright. But I would tread lightly on expressing everything to Professor Leo. I get it that he's our professor and he promised not to say anything to anyone. Yet, don't believe everything you see and hear. I am glad though, that Professor Luna is there to defend you. I spoke with the upperclassman about her, and they all praised her for being so vastly different from her brother. Just make sure that every time you have office hours with him, Professor Luna is present as well." Heart unfolded his arms and placed them on his hips, staring intently at Rex.

"Yes Heart, I get it. Don't worry, I'll be sure to take care of myself. And I can leave anytime I want. As long as Professor Luna is there, I feel safe in there."

Heart smiled, his sharp teeth exposing themselves to Rex. "Good, or else I'll give you a big, strong chomp, heh."

Rex shook his head. "Whatever, you dick."

"All in good fun. Anyway, does anyone else know about this?"

"No, I wanted to tell you first Heart. I was going to tell Nico, but I thought it was proper to let you know about it and get your thoughts."

"Hmmm..." Heart placed a clawed finger on his chin. "Well, if you are going to tell the others about it, just don't tell them everything you told me. Be very brief about it. I know you are close with Nocturne and Nico, so you can give a little more leeway into that. But umm...with Axel and Gabu...just maybe not tell them at all...actually..."

Rex looked down at the ground, a bit dejected. "Oh...something the matter, Heart?"

Heart patted Rex gently on his head. "No, don't worry about it. I was just thinking that, since you don't know the two of them that well, especially that obnoxious land shark, you don't want to start a friendship with that sort of baggage. Just let the relationship nurture overtime and then go for it. You don't know other people's boundaries yet, so you don't want to bombard them with information that they may not be able to handle and become overwhelmed with. I'm looking out for you Rex, and I can't see you being hurt, emotionally or physically."

Rex started to sob and leaned into Heart. "T-Thank you Heart. I-I truly appreciate hearing that. I am glad you are my roommate. You do have a heart of gold."

"Yea, everyone tells me that, heh. But seriously though, I'm always here for you. You can count on me. But anyway, I think we can continue this conversation in our room later. Don't want too many eyes to look at us."

Rex calmed himself down and looked back towards the lab entrance, a few eyes of the Pokémon around them started to glance towards their way. Heart waved them off, and they all turned back to chatting with their respective groups.

"Thanks again Heart. I think I am fine. I just hope nothing bad happens with Professor Sol in lab. From what Professor Leo and Luna told me, he does have a fiery personality."

"Mmhmm, but you got nothing to worry. I'll make sure nothing bad happens to you."

Before Rex was able to say anything, the lab door swung open, and out stepped Professor Sol, although with a bit of fierceness in his voice. "Ok you children, now listen up. This is chemistry lab and I expect all of you to not burn this place down. I don't need any accidents under my name you hear. I take everything here extremely seriously, and if you want to make a joke out of this, I recommend you leave now." Professor Sol scanned everyone in the hallway, not one Pokémon dared blink. "Good, now you all can come on in. There is no assigned seating for today, but whoever you sit next to, that will determine your partner. And if I see any arguing, you don't want me to assign partners."

The hallway was so silent, a kricketot can be heard humming somewhere. All the students slowly lined up and walked into the class, with Heart and Rex in the middle of the pack. Upon entering the classroom, Heart and Rex noticed that most of the benches were occupied with one student, leaving them unable to pair up with each other. However, knowing how lucky Rex was, they managed to find the last empty bench on the far side of the classroom, although it was directly in front of Professor Sol's desk. Heart and Rex looked at each other and nodded, decided to take the risk and rather work together as partners and deal with Professor Sol's attitude day-to-day. After everyone entered the room and sat next to their partners, whether willingly or begrudgingly, Professor Sol stood in the center of the classroom and stared fiercely at everyone.

"Ok, now that you all have your seats, this is where you all will sit for the rest of the semester. The Pokémon that is connected to your bench is your partner for the labs. Now, everyone will be graded individually for what you work on, but some experiments require teamwork and working with your partner, so I will let you know when those experiments will take place. Other than that, I hope everyone brought their lab manuals, cause we are going to start with experiment one today."

Rex immediately went into his backpack and brought out a binder. On the surface, it said Chemistry Lab Manual By: Professor Sol. Rex turned to experiment one and it showed a picture of various beakers and a Bunson Burner. The title of experiment one said, Basic Lessons in Acids and Bases. Rex looked over at Heart and saw that he too had the correct page open.

"Ok, that should be enough time. Now, I'll give a quick summary of what you should expect today. You all will learn about acids and bases and the importance of the different kinds we have. Not all of them are treated equally, and various salts will be produced when you mixed them together. You will also understand the importance of molarity of the products you will be working with, but today, we will just keep everything as 1.0 M. Other than that, you will also practice how to use a Bunson Burner and control the heat of things. We will practice with just test tubes and basic tap water for today. And, I am looking at all of your fire types in the crowd, no one is allowed to use any of their innate abilities. You will all learn how to use a flint. Other than that, any questions?" Professor Sol spread his claws on his desk and stared at the entire classroom, the green in his eyes shined brightly against the light of the classroom.

As Rex looked around the classroom, he saw an Ampharos raised their paw into the air. "Umm...Professor Sol. Will we be wearing any protective gear for this?"

Professor Sol's eyes immediately shot at the woolless sheep. "Of course. I'm not taking any fall for you guys hurting yourself. On your bench, you will all notice 6 drawers. Please open the top left drawer labeled 1." Sounds of wheels on railings can be heard echoing throughout the lab. "There, you will see a box of gloves and 5 sets of goggles with various colors. If you ever run out of gloves, let me know and I can get a replacement. As for the goggles, you lot are luckily my first lab for this semester, so you will get to choose whichever goggles you want. After that, you will store them in drawer labeled 2. That will be yours, and only yours for the rest of the semester. Other students will be sharing your benches, but if you notice anything wrong or missing, let me know and I will be sure to perform the corrective action necessary." Professor Sol said the last word with a bit of aggression, causing a stirring amongst the classroom.

The Ampharos shyly nodded their head. "Oh...thank you Professor Sol..."

Professor Sol slowly nodded his head before staring back at the crowd. "Hmph, anyone else have a question?"

Another student, this time a Gallade, raised their hand up into the air. "Umm Professor, what happens if we end up spilling some of that acid or base on ourselves?"

Professor Sol closed his eyes and shook his head. "I swear...just...don't do that. But if you do, we have an eye wash station in the back. I know all of us are built somewhat differently, but it should confirm to your vision. Just flush it for fifteen minutes. If it gets on your clothes, just don't touch it with your hands/paws/whatever. Let me know and I will assist you in removing your clothes. If you want, I recommend buying a lab coat from the bookstore. They are pretty cheap and should last you for all of your labs. A good investment really."

The Gallade nervously smiled. "Oh...thanks Professor."

Professor Sol sighed. "I'll take one more question, and it better be a good one."

Rex sheepishly raised his hand, with everyone in the classroom turning their heads towards him, even Heart. Rex wanted to bring his hand back down, but Heart smiled and gently nodded his head for Rex to continue. As Rex turned his attention to Professor Sol, he saw the fire in his teacher's green eyes. He also noticed a smirky grin formed slightly in his jawline. "Umm Professor Sol...are you going to demonstrate with us how to do it first?"

Professor Sol slammed both of his paws on the table and gave off a soft growl. The entire class gasped at the sight and Heart crossed his arms, staring at Professor Sol with a look of anger. Rex wanted to sink into the floor, embarrassed at the question he may have asked could have upset his professor. Professor Sol murmured to himself, although Rex could only hear the tail end of it. "...Leo and Luna told me I need to calm down...whatever..." Rex's eyes twitched slightly, hearing those two specific names. Wait, did he just reference Professor Leo and Luna... Before Rex could ponder more on the thought, Professor Sol took a deep breath, inhaling before exhaling. "Yes, Rex. I will show you all what to do first, as to not endanger yourself with the acid and base. I will also show you all how to use the flint. I wanted to do this at the start, but I guess everyone enjoyed playing 20 questions with me or something." Professor Sol gave off a big sigh. "Without any more interruptions, let us begin."

Professor Sol demonstrated the importance of mixing equal volumes of acids and bases, to help neutralize the pH of the chemicals that were introduced to each other. Even with following the manual, Professor Sol informed the entire class that even a slight miscalculation off can result in an experiment going wrong. The use of the pipettes and graduated cylinders are very important and to ensure as close measurements as possible. It is known that you may be off by a milliliter or so, but being way off can blow up your results, quite literally. He then showed the class how to properly use a Bunson Burner with the flint. After ensuring the tube feeding the gas to the burner was properly fitted, he turned on the gas and slowly moved the handle at the base of the burner to let the gas flow into it. Then, Professor Sol grabbed the flint between two of his clawed fingers and pressed the metal rods against each other, causing some sparks to appear. Eventually, the sparks fed into the gas and lit the burner, a steady blue flame appearing.

"And there you go class. Quite simple right? Now, just do the same thing I just showed you. I'll be watching you from my desk. Just, try not to do blow yourself up on day one please." Professor Sol walked over to his chair and sat down, leaning back onto it as the entire class heard it creak.

Rex nervously looked over at Heart. "Oh Arceus, Heart. I don't know what to do. And with Professor Sol being right in front of us, I think I may mess up somewhere."

Heart smiled back at Rex, that warmth of his overflowing towards him. "Naw, don't be scared about that. You saw how easy it was. Just make sure you mix the parts equally. And besides, you can always add a bit more of the other substance, if it's too acidic or basic. We have the litmus paper to check for the pH. I mean, as long as we don't overflow and spill on the table, I think it should be fine. I'll be here to help you if you need it Rex."

Rex chuckled softly. "Thanks Heart. I really appreciate your help. I got this...We got this."

"That's the spirit, now, let's make Professor Sol proud."

Rex turned his focus back to the two labeled beakers on his desk. One beaker was 1.0 M NaOH and the other was 1.0 M HCl. Ok according to the manual, I will mix 125 mL of each into this 500 mL beaker. This should neutralize the two components and give me just salty water. Rex carefully measured both of the clear liquids into their respective cylinders. This looks about right, I wonder how far along Heart is. Rex looked over to his side and his eyes opened wide. Heart already finished his mixture, the litmus paper staying at purple, indicating the neutral color. Heart focused on his Bunson Burner instead, igniting a flame and preparing his test tube. Wow, Heart is so fast, I need to catch up to him. Rex looked back at his two cylinders and poured them simultaneously into the beaker. Cmon, please have the correct measurements. After sometime, Rex placed the litmus paper in the beaker and closed his eyes. Please be purple. Please be purple. Rex opened them and a sigh of relief washed over him as the litmus paper stayed the neutral color he wanted. A big grin formed across Rex's face as he was delighted in the experiment. He turned over to Heart, who glanced back at him with a smile, nodding his head.

As Rex returned his focus back to his bench, he swore he glanced Professor Sol staring back at him, a smirk formed across his face. Rex tried his best to avoid eye contact with the Charizard, but he kept looking at him in the corner of his eye. Why is Professor Sol so intent in staring at me. It's like he is expecting a particular outcome. It's alright Rex, you got this. Half of the lab is done, just need to work on this Bunson Burner. As Rex went over to attach the tube to the gas valve, his paw bumped into the beaker and the contents of the salty water spilled all over his bench. Rex started to panic, his breathing intensified as he had no idea what to do. He saw the liquid slowly creep towards his arms and body, doing his best to avoid any contact with the liquid. Professor Sol started to rise out of his seat, the look on his face full of anger and disgust, but Heart reached over, pulled out some paper towels and helped Rex clean his bench.

"Accidents happen Rex. Luckily, these two items were already neutralized. That shouldn't be a problem, right Professor Sol?" Heart looked over at the Charizard, with a gentle smile on his face.

Professor Sol grunted, rolling his eyes. "That may be true..., but still don't do that again Rex. You are very lucky you didn't hurt yourself with those corrosive liquids. If your measurements have been off, even the slightest, your scales wouldn't be as nice as they are now. I should honestly mark you down for that, but seeing how it is the first day and I am a bit nice, I'll let it slide. You at least got that half of the experiment done. Just don't blow up my lab, ok?"

Heart answered for Rex. "He'll be fine Professor. I'll assist him if he needs it and he will do great, right Rex?"

Rex looked at both Professor Sol, who started to sit back down on his chair and cross his arms behind his head, and Heart, who gave off his gentle smile. "Yes Heart...Yes Professor. I got this."

"Whatever." Professor Sol went back to observing the rest of the class, but kept his eye on both Heart and Rex.

"Just take a deep breath Rex, you only need to do the other experiment now. It's very simple, just like how Professor Sol showed us. Take your time, focus, and it will be a breeze for ya." Heart nodded his head and patted Rex gently on his shoulder before returning back to his equipment.

Rex nodded his head, focused on getting the next experiment done. Ok Rex, you can do it. Just don't give Professor Sol any of your attention. Avoid eye contact with him as much as you can. He will only make it worst. Just focus on the task at hand. Rex reached out to his Bunson Burner and attached the tube to the valve and turned it open. As he heard the gas hiss through the metal nozzle, Rex placed the flint between his clawed fingers and pressed them against each other, igniting a few sparks. Eventually, the sparks and gas connected and a blue flame appeared at the top of the Bunson Burner. Rex smiled at himself, glad that he got the fire going with no problem. As he looked over to his side, Heart nodded at him, his setup almost complete as his test tube started to slowly boil. Rex returned his attention back to his setup, and grabbed the standing rod and attached the test tube clamp on it. He then filled a test tube with water and clamped it onto the clamp. Once that was done, he maneuvered the apparatus to the flame, so that the bottom of the test tube was now touching the flame.

Ok, so far so good. Now just have to wa...The F... Rex nearly stumbled on his stool as a big blush formed across his face. His eyes glanced over to where his professor was sitting and the sight he saw caused him to act sheepishly in his bench. Professor Sol leaned back in his chair, his arms still crossed behind his head, but he placed his feet on top of his desk. Rex was mesmerized by the soles, seeing the sharp, white claws gently flex in the air. The yellow cream colored circle, as with most Charizards, was perfectly presented at the center of Sol's foot. Why...why am I staring at this? It's just feet, but why is my mind so curious about it?!?

As Rex continued to stare at them, Professor Sol briefly looked at Rex's eyes and saw where they were fixated on. A big smirk slowly formed across his face as he crossed one foot on top of the other, giving Rex a full display of his soft feet.

Rex started to drool a little bit down his mouth, his eyes laser focused more on his teacher then his experiment. What is going on here? Why can I not turn my attention elsewhere. Ugh...I just want to...I just want to...I just want to touch his feet. I want to press my face against them. I want to feel him step on me...I even want to lick that big sole of his...I want to suck on each of his claws...I want...I want...I... Rex's face turned redder and redder with each passing thought as Professor Sol continued to tease Rex.

"Hey Rex...Rex...Rex! Your test tube!"

Rex's eyes blinked as he looked over to his side and noticed that the water boiled over and started to spill down the side of the tube and onto the table below. Rex immediately shut off the gas valve, extinguishing the flame. Rex took a deep breath and looked over to his side, seeing Heart with a worried face. "Oh sorry..."

"You ok there Rex? You just sort of spaced out for a few minutes back there." Heart gently placed his paw on Rex's shoulder. "Talk to me, what's up?"

Rex's face was still red with embarrassment, as the entire class looked over in his direction. "Umm...well..it's nothing really. I just got...distracted..."

Heart leaned down, putting one of his claws underneath Rex's snout and tilting it up, so their eyes were staring at each other. "Hey, it's alright. We can talk about it later, okay? Let's just clean this up befo-."

"Ahem. Class, focus back on your own experiments. Don't worry about other things that don't pertain to you." Professor Sol stood in front of Rex's bench, his hands crossed as he tapped his claws against the floor. "Everything ok here Rex? You seemed to cause two accidents on the same day, a record if I say so myself, heh."

Heart stood up and turned his attention to Professor Sol. "Was there a need to say that, Professor?"

"Hmph, this is my lab, and I can say what I want. And it's a fact. I'm not lying, am I?"

Heart sighed and shook his head. "I guess you aren't, but still, you don't have to say it like that Professor..."

"Well, I just want to emphasize it doesn't happen again, that's all. So, Rex..."

Rex looked up at Professor Sol, his eyes trying to avoid Sol's. "Umm..yes Professor?"

"I would like to see you after class for a little bit, in my office. I should honestly fail you for what happened today, but I can think of an extra credit assignment you can do for me instead, to make up for it."

Before Rex could respond, Heart intervened. "Is that necessary Professor? To fail a student on a lab assignment for these two minor accidents. It's not like Rex blew up the lab or spilled acid everywhere. No one was hurt or in danger, so I don't see why all of this needs to happen."

Professor Sol shook his head in disgust to Heart. "Ahem, I did not ask you to speak for him. Unless you want me to fail you too. But don't worry, the assignment won't be too hard. It's just something scientists like us like to test anyways."

Heart scoffed. "Well, fail me too then, I'll join Rex in the assignment."

"It's okay Heart, I can do this. I don't need you to risk your grade for me like this. I can handle whatever extra credit assignment Professor Sol has in store." Rex pleaded to Heart, a bit of tears in his eyes.

Shocked, Heart's jaw stood wide open for a few moments. "But, Rex..."

Professor Sol clapped his paws together. "See, your partner there says he can do it on his own. So no need for your interference. And besides, it'll be no more than an hour. I am confident Rex will finish rather quickly with the assignments I have in mind. But anyway, if you will excuse me." Professor Sol started to walk back to his center bench.

Rex looked over at Heart and hugged him immediately. "Thank you though Heart, for standing up for me. I don't want you to get in trouble."

Heart sighed, but smiled, hugging Rex back. "I know, but I can't see you like this. Well, I am sure Professor Sol won't make you do too much in his extra credit assignment. When you are done, meet me back at our room, okay Rex? We can talk about the assignment and anything else you want to discuss more about Professor Leo and Luna. I am sure that Nocturne and Nico would be glad to hear whatever you want. But don't be afraid to hold back information from me, I am here to protect you Rex and I don't want anyone, not even our professors, to do anything that is against your liking."

Rex nodded his head. "Thank you Heart, you don't know how lucky I am to have you as a roommate."

Before Heart could respond, Professor Sol started to address the class. "Ok everyone, now that we had our fun for today. Class is dismissed for lab. I will see you all tomorrow for lecture and don't forget to write in the lab write-up what you learned today and answer the questions at the end of the chapter in the manual. Other than that, good-bye." Professor Sol went back over to his deck and started to pack his belongings.

Heart looked over at Rex and patted him on the shoulder. "Do you want me to stay Rex?"

Rex shook his head. "No, it's fine Heart. I got this. I'll finish whatever assignment Professor Sol has for me as soon as I can and then we can enjoy our dinner tonight." Rex beamed up at Heart.

Heart chuckled. "Well, alright then. Text me though, okay. Anything that is off, I will come rushing there right away."

Rex laughed as well. "Of course Heart, you have my word on that."

Heart smiled and grabbed his backpack and started to leave the lab with the rest of the class. As he passed by the door, Heart gave one last glance at Professor Sol, as if to say that he will be watching him. Professor Sol brushed it aside as he beckoned Rex over to his desk. Rex grabbed his belongings and stood in front of him.

Professor Sol smirked, stretching his arms and gently cracking his neck. "So, Rex. Let's head into my office now, shall we? I'll tell you all about the extra credit assignment in there, and I am sure you will be very eager to begin." Professor Sol walked passed Rex and motioned for him to follow.

"Umm, alright then Professor. I hope it won't be too hard." Rex left the lab entrance and stood outside the hallway.

Professor Sol closed the door and locked it behind as he turned his attention back to Rex, a sinister smile formed across his face. "Oh, trust me, it won't be hard if you do your job, heh. Now, this way." Professor Sol led Rex down the hall, right towards the entrance of his office. However, Professor Sol walked in such a way that he clearly displayed his sole again to Rex, much to his dismay.

As Rex followed his professor, he stared back down at the Charizard's feet and started to blush. What the heck did I get myself into now. And why was Professor Sol wording so weird. And damn, why is he walking in front of me like that. His feet, why is his feet on my mind. Ugh, Heart, I may need you sooner than I would hope. Please, don't let anything bad happen to me...
