1984 Honda Nighthawk Part 2
Mark spends a day in Bridge Crossing waiting for his bike to be repaired, watching how life goes by in this little town in the woods. Lucy hatches a plan, but needs Marks help.
Mark sat in a cheap wicker chair eating breakfast at the only eatery in Bridge Crossing. He didn't sleep very well, the motel had no sound proofing and his neighbor was fully enjoying the complimentary satellite TV all night. Everything about the cafe was complacent; the cheap table and chairs, the uncaring middle-aged waitress, and the mediocre bacon and eggs. There's no need to change or strive to be better when you're the only place in town.
“Tragic, huh?" the waitress sighs, wiping a tear from her furred face. She's sat at a nearby table totally fixated on the 20" Sony CRT in the corner, the glass screen showing fuzzy news reports of flooding and destruction. “My sister went to New Orleans a few years ago, it looked so nice in her pictures, but now look at them! 20 feet of water, my Lord!" The older bespectacled lynx shakes her head, standing up to fetch the remote so she can turn the sound up to hear it better.
“I'm sure they'll be fine, they'll be back on their feet this time next year. We got hit hard by Juan in Nova Scotia, and we're kinda alright now" he mumbles, thumbing through the bills in his wallet and setting them down on the table, dropping a handful of change on top.
“Oh I hope you're right young man." They wave at eachother and exchange pleasantries as he heads on out, bell on the door jingling. There's not much else to do here, and he's got a few hours until the auto shop is even open.
He takes a walk down the sidewalk with his hands in his pocket, taking note of the locals. Everyone around here is either a hyena or a native Canadian species like a lynx or beaver, his pale, flat and furless face earning a lot of stares from the locals. He hadn't seen a single kid around, not even a school – come to think of it Lucy is probably the youngest person around here. It's definitely a Thursday morning though judging by the lineup of pensioners going to the postoffice, each eager to get their cheque to cash in at the Royal Bank across the street.
Eventually he ends up on the bridge that gave the town its namesake, leaning on the stone railing and peering down at the gentle flow of water, tranquility broken by the occasional car. He checks his watch far too often, the digital face seemingly taking hours to tick by one minute. Finally the opening time for Lucas's comes near, and he heads on up the hill to try and see her again. When he gets there the shops door is open, the lot mostly empty, with a red, white and blue Honda motorcycle parked out front.
“Hey there!" he calls, leaning on the wall, watching Lucy work on her fours with her rear in the air. Her ears perk up as he speaks, siting up and looking back at him with that big, toothy grin of hers.
“Hey yourself!" she snaps back, the engine is already out of his bike, now turning her attention to the donor. “Old man won't be awake for a couple of hours, let alone here if you wanna talk. Just can't do much more than that, gotta be here if any customers swing by"
“He really has you open this place all by yourself?" He steps forward, kneeling down to look at the remains of his engine. She'd taken the header off to look inside – low and behold the timing chain is in two, and everything is coated in a thick slurry of oil, gas and metal shavings.
“And most of the dirty work! He's got real bad arthritis, can barely move half the time, so he only really does standing work 'an the office stuff." Her pause is punctuated by the ratcheting of a socket wrench. “You know, I thought so much last night about you. All I could think of is going with you, getting out of here and living my life."
“Well, why don't you go? You got wheels and you're a mechanic too, can get a job anywhere." He sits down on the concrete floor near her, putting a hand on her shoulder as she dips her head down. “I know it can be hard, it took a lot for me to move to Halifax, but I don't regret it one bit."
“If I leave this places falls apart. I don't think dad could make enough to get by without me, I don't – I don't want to see him suffer." She turns to him, dirty pawpad stroking his cheek. “I know he was a jerk to you but he means well. It's just been me 'an him for the past few years, he's real protective of me ever since..."
“One week. Get out of town for a while and relax, be yourself, get out of this rut. The shop will still be here when you get back." He puts his hands on to hers, gently sliding it off his face and cupping her paw gently.
“But what if I LIKE it?" she shouts, voice echoing throughout he steel building. “What if I like it out there, and – and I can't come back? I get back and I hate living in this shitty town more than ever, and I just gotta keep hating it here more than ever, forever and ever to make sure my dads OK – what then?" Barred-tooth anger breaks away to raw tearful emotion, face buried in her hands as she stands and turns away from him.
“Well you ca-" he stops watching as she runs away in to the back of the shop. “Lucy? Lucy!" he calls out after her, jogging behind her as she vanishes in to the hallways of the small office. He quiets down, listening for her cries, creeping toward the sound, ending up in front of a locked door bearing the letters W_SHROOM. “Lucy open up, I-"
“Go away!" she shouts between sniffled and sobs. “ I don't want you seeing me like this, just – just go away! Go away and never come back!"
“I'm not gonna go away, you know that. I like you too much to do that" he replies, now standing in silence as he tries to think of the magical combination of words that'd cheer her up, that'd fix a lifetime of resentment. “You can't live your life for anyone else, not even me. You gotta make your own happiness."
“What if my happiness gets him killed? What if he starves without the money I bring in?" He hears her blow her nose, followed by more sniffling and coughing. “I'm the only one that makes any real fucking money around here!"
“I dunno" he mumbles to himself, wiping at his face – it hurt to hear her like this, it was making him tear up too. “You could... You could probably make more money in the city. Send some back to him to keep him afloat. Maybe visit on the weekends" He can hear her quiet down, he wasn't sure if that was a good thing or bad thing. He desperately wanted to barge in there, see how she's doing and give her the biggest hug of her life.
“You know... You're pretty smart." She heaves a deep breath, still sniffling and wiping up snot and tears. “I never thought of that. He wouldn't like it but as long as he's OK, as long as he's not starving or freezing, I'm happy. I could do that." He couldn't see her, but he could hear the smile on her face.
“See? I knew we could work something out. Now c'mon, get out here so I can give you a hug."
“I don't want you seeing me as a mess, I just don't." her voice is still shaky with emotion. “Just go back out to the floor I'll be there in 10 alright?"
"I understand. just know that I love you, alright?" He listened for a response for a moment, then sticking to his word, waiting back at the bikes to give her privacy. All he could do is stare at the green LCD of his watch as the numbers changed, time moving even slower here than the bridge. Finally she emerges back on to the floor, red around the eyes and nose, facial fur still a little damp. They meet eachother halfway, arms wrapped around the other and holding on as tight as they can.
“Did you really mean that back there?" her quavering voice asks, head on his shoulders. He reaches up to stroke her hair and ears, revelling in how soft she is.
“Of course I did." They just stand there for a while, enjoying each others warm embrace. In this moment everything felt like it'd work out, that everything would be fine. They share a short kiss, Lucy cutting it short.
“Help me finish your ride up so I can get ahead of schedule, then I'll talk to dad." He nods, following along behind her to the two bikes “When he gets here, don't say a damn thing to him, alright? I don't want him thinking its your idea, or that I'm running off with you." With that final warning they got to work, she's pretty fast on a good day, even quicker with him handing her the tools and parts needed. She'd worked on this particular bike for hundreds of hours in her free time and it showed!
“Is it good to go?" He's absolutely giddy, barely able to contain his excitement. She days nothing, only pushing the key in to his palm and grinning at him. He swings his leg over the bike, getting his feet on the pegs and putting the key in the ignition. With a deep breath he pressed the engine start, the bike immediately roaring to life. He laughs and yells as he twists the throttle, the pair grinning at eachother as she gives him the signal to cut the power.
“How's that for good to go?" she leans in to plant a kiss on his cheek as he cuts the engine, looking deep in to his eyes. “Now then, where's my 600 bucks?"
“Yeah yeah yeah!" he retorts, fishing his wallet out and counting odd bills out on to the gas tank, the hyena snatching the pile of cash away as soon as he had it counted out, folding it over and stuffing it in to her bra. “There you go - so, what now?"
“I'm gonna bring up the vacation thing with my dad when he gets in, leave it at that for now. I think you should be outta here when he gets here, don't want him making that connection." She finds a scrap piece of paper, scrawling something on it. “This is my cell number, shoot me a text so I got yours too." He takes the raggedy note in to his hand, pulling his Nokia out to copy the number in right away.
“So, what should I do while I wait?" He hits send, that familiar shrill ringtone coming from her breast pocket.
“There's a Irving about 20 clicks north. Go fill up, get something to eat. I'll text you or meet you there." They share a peck on the cheek just before he gets his helmet on and heads off.
He'd never been to this Irving but they're all the same, each gas station nigh-identical to the others not in layout or design, but in feel. Mark spent half of his life bumming around places like this in highschool when he had nothing better to do, this one in particular felt especially desolate its massive flat lot that seemingly went on forever. He sits on a curb with his bike nearby, helmet at his side as he struggles to light a cigarette in the wind. All there is to do here is to buy gas, snacks and cigarettes – and he'd already done all three within 10 minutes of getting here.
Eventually there's a little commotion nearby, a few older guys sitting on their chrome cruisers chatting to eachother. They wear black leather jackets adorned with skulls and flames, each one embellished with aggressive calls to action like “LIVE FREE OR DIE" or “BORN TO BE WILD" yet from what he can overhear, they're talking about retirement plans and dentistry. Each and every one of them got home from work, said hi to the wife, then head out here in their biker cosplay to drink gas-station coffee with their friends. Mark just didn't get it.
It's starting to get dark, he'd already burned through more coffin nails than he'd like to admit. He'd nearly forgotten about the friends he planned to meet in Toronto, pulling out his Nokia, fiddling with the buttons, staring at the small, green screen. He'd texted them that he broke down but never checked the responses, “whn wll u b hr" followed by a “r u ok???" from Dan. He takes the time to message them back, painstakingly typing out “im k on da road soon" and hitting send. 20 minutes later he hears back, “gld ur k cya soon ttyl".
The only light now is from the moon and street lights, the stir-sticks got bored of their cold coffee and rode home for dinner a while ago. What was he doing here, was this really happening? Is he really wasting his precious vacation waiting for hours at some gas station for a girl he just met? He sighs and lays down on the cold concrete sidewalk, crossing his legs and lighting up another cigarette. Maybe he actually wiped out back there and he's laying in hospital right now, and Lucys just a drugged up figment of his imagination as his brain goes to mush. That'd explain why she's so hot, so perfect... He checks his watch, it's 11pm already? She said she'd come by or text, the shop closed hours ago!
Suddenly his phone bursts to life, Mark sitting back up as quick as possible and digging in his jacket to see who's calling, grinning ear to ear when he see's who's number it is.
“What took you so long?" he snaps at her right as he picked up.
“I, uhh... Had a lot of work to finish up. Anyway, get over to my dads place now! And make sure your tank is full!" Her voice is quiet and hushed, piquing his suspicion.
“I filled up already, what's going on?"
“I can't talk all day, I only get like 30 minutes on my plan. Just get over here, and cut your engine and lights as you roll in to the driveway." She put the phone down immediately, leaving Mark totally bewildered. He thought about what to do for a moment, still torn between joining his friends as soon as possible and linking up with this girl he just met. Regardless he yanks his helmet on, straddling his bike and setting off.
He rides slow to stay on the downlow, seeing that familiar bridge far off in the distance as he coasts down a hill, turning off down the same gravel road she took him down yesterday. He watches the retro-reflective numbers at the beginning of each driveway appear and disappear in to the night, until he finally finds his mark. Just as instructed he kills the engine and lights, rolling forward and turning down in to the driveway, seeing some sort of light off in the distance among the sea of dead cars.
“You're finally here!" a familiar, hushed voice calls out to him from the rear of an old van, the light he saw earlier was a headlamp she's got on.
“What's going on? What's with the quiet act?" His face demands answers, setting his kickstand down and stepping towards her. “It didn't go well, did it? You're sneaking out, and want me to help, don't you?" The light follows her gaze down to the tall grass growing between each wreck.
“So what if it did? I'm an adult, I can go wherever and whenever I want!" she puffs, sounding 5 years her junior.
“Then what's with this Tom Clancy sneak'n around bullshit?" He kept looking over his shoulder at the house, afraid to get
“Just because the law says I can doesn't mean he'd just roll the red carpet out for me! Look, this Vanduras mine, the backs cleared out and'll fit both our bikes. I just need your help getting it of this lot, oh and it's bone dry so we'll need to siphon your bikes gas to get it goin'." Her face and tone are as serious as can be as she lays out this hair-brained scheme to him, all he could do was rub his temples and turn away to try and think. “Also the vans got no muffler, so we'll need to hotfoot it out of here once we start it."
“You went from not wanting to leave to making up this scheme in a matter of hours?" The total emotional whiplash boggled his mind, one minute she's stoic and tough, then she's a wreck, now she's breaking the one rule she's never broken?
“I've been dreaming up ways to get out of here for as long as I can remember, Mark. You just made that dream feel obtainable" she walks up to him, placing her hands on his shoulders. “You came here because I asked you to help, so are you gonna help or what?"
“I'll help" he whispers back after a moment of thought, Lucy grinning and kissing him on the nose.
“We'll do more later" she whispers, leading him on – literally and figuratively. First things first they push they push the old Pontiac blocking them in out the way, struggling to rock it out of the indentations under each flat tire. Next they roll the Vandura out, Lucy making sure to cut the wheel to avoid the other cars, pointing the nose tot he driveway and its rear to barn. He opens the back of the van, surprised at the sight before him.
“...You've really have been thinking about this for a while, haven't you?" The back of the van had been ripped out, with a locking motorcycle wheel-chock bolted to the floor on the right side and a makeshift ramp stuff to the side. There's a hastily packed suitcase on the left, with a set of white bike leathers and a pile of blankets strewn atop of it. The windows even have makeshift curtains.
“Yeah, I got the van a year ago, wanted to make a camper so I could just... Leave, but take my bike with me. Haven't had much time to work on 'er though." She wastes no time, talking to him as she wheels her bike towards the van, Mark setting and holding the ramp as she rolls the bike in, the chock clasping the front wheel and keep the bike upright and steady. “We'll need to get some straps or something for yours. Here, start siphoning while I check out the barn."
She tosses him the hose and runs off down the land, leaving him with little light. He wheels his ride to the vans filler cap, popping his bikes tank open and sticking the tube in. “Here goes" he thinks to himself, sucking on the tube till the foul taste of gas hit his tongue, coughing and spluttering as he sticks the siphon in to the van, wiping his mouth on his sleeve.
“These should keep your bike safe!" she half-calls to him, holding some straps and a couple couch cushions. The process of ramping his bike up in to the van is relatively straight forward, setting the steering lock and centre stand down, shoving the cushions between the two bikes and strapping them together.
“We got the gas, your stuff and both bikes in and secured – what else?"
“Now we just gotta get out of here!" She climbs in to the drivers, fiddling with her keys to find the right one, heart stopping for a moment as she stares at it, and then to him. “Are you ready? Do you... Do you think we should do this?" The confidence drained from her voice as she spoke. There's no going back once she starts up that engine, her life would be different no matter how it plays out
“It's your choice. I can be with you even if you want to stay here, the drives not too bad from Halifax." The both knew that was bullshit, but it was the sentiment that brightened her spirits, that he'd do it all again just to meet up. She pushes the key in to the ignition and twists it to accessory, all the lights coming on. The next notch would send them on their way, hand quivering on the key. With renewed conviction she twists it further, the starter struggling for a moment, engine spluttering and coughing for a few seconds until the engine finally roars to life. They cheer and shout and hug, the throaty rumble of the unmuffled V6 making it difficult to hear.
The engine shouts as the pedal is floored, van bouncing and gallumping up the hill, a wheel sticking in the air as she turns at speed, blaring through these familiar roads as fast as she can. He tries to tell her to slow down, but the engine is far too loud. She only lets off the gas when they get to the Irving, turning in to the pumps.
“That was – that was insane!" she squeals after cutting the engine, hopping out to to tend to the pumps, swiping her card on the machine.
“We need to find an exhaust or we'll be deaf by the time we get to Toronto!" he yells back, ears still ringing. The bike could only give it just enough to get going before, but with a full tank of gas this thing would go far. He looks at the van now that it's fully illuminated in the light, it's all white, but the sliding door was black. A decal reads “Coady's Elec-", the letters cut off as it runs off to the replacement panel, a phone number underneath is cut off too.
“I know I know, I never really had time to finish it... But I've never been north of this gas station before, I just can't wait to get out of here!" She leans on the van, holding the nozzle in. “I'm sure there's a U-pick somewhere between here and Toronto."
“For sure!" He leans at her side, letting her rest her head on his shoulder as they watched the numbers on the pump roll over. What a wild day, he'd spent hours practically comatose and now is heart is racing. “We should find somewhere to sleep though, it's already midnight."
“Yeah, you're probably right." Her eyes wonder down the road, focusing on the last entry of a green highway sign - QUEBEC 93KM. “Why don't we cross over the border first, get some ground before we pull over the night?"
“Sure thing, dear." She raises an eyebrow and smirks at him, putting the pump head away as he circles around to the passenger side.
“Dear? Really?" she laughs, climbing in and pulling her belt on.
“Sure, why not? I like how it makes you blush!" he sneaked in just as she's starting the engine, her retort drowned out. He's pretty sure he can read the word “dick" off of her smiling lips though.
The ride is loud and monotonous, the van making a racket throughout the inky night. They both wanted to keep talking but the engines racket precluded them from that. There's maybe 2 other cars on the road at this hour, Mark leaning on the window and watching the stars by go. Eventually he feels a grab on his shoulder, the hyena point out of the windshield. A blue sign reads “Welcome to Quebec" underneath the same phrase in french, a grinning Lucy pulling over and parking behind the sign.
“C'mon, come help me make the bed" she offers after cutting the engine. “Making the bed" for them meant wheeling his bike out of the van, setting some blankets down on the floor of the van and using piles of clothes and the couch cushions as makeshift pillows. It's surprisingly comfortable with the massive pile of blankets under them, sitting across from eachother as they undress.
“You've had this whole thing figured out for a while, haven't you?" He's muffled by the shirt over his head, accidentally elbowing her bike as he takes it off.
“Yeah! I wanted a mattress in here before I left, and to cover all the metal with carpet, and I didn't really plan to have two bikes in here..." Those big golden eyes of hers can't help but ogle him as she unbuttons her dirty overalls, sliding it down her legs and finally kicking it off. “I never factored in meeting you."
“Same, I thought I'd be in Ontario by now" he mutters, tossing his jeans and underwear to the side and taking her hands in to his, leaning in for a kiss as he gently pushes her down in to the makeshift bed. “To think, if I never broke down we'd have never met." A hand slips underneath her to unhook her bra, mentally high-fiving himself as he gets the clasp in one go and pulling it off of her – and watching as 600 dollars in mixed bills showers down on to her chest, Lucy erupting in to wild laughter.
“Oh my god I'm so sorry! The engine - I forgot I left that there!" she heaves between cackles, scooping up the bills to put back in the cup of her bra, before finally tossing the garment to the side. Mark just watched in disbelief, unsure how to react.
“Do you always keep your money there?" Smooth, furless hands grab and caress her bosom, delighting in all the little movements and noises
“So what! It's usually not a problem." Lucys feigned offence quickly melts away, she's more than happy to keep his hands occupied.
“You're such a goof" a knee pushes through her closed legs, forcing them open. With her legs apart he thrusts down in to her, rubbing the intimacies together, grinning as her eyes light up. He's already raring to go, and can feel just how excited she is.
“Mark! Whatever happened to 'didn't mean to be rude' and beating 'round the bush?"
“I didn't wanna assume, but now-" he pauses to kiss her, hands running down her sides, slipping his fingers underneath the band of her underwear “-now I know you want it." He yanks her underwear down, Lucy gasping as his manhood lined up with her entrance for the first time, feeling his skin against hers. All he had to do was push ahead.
“M-Mark! I... Come on, I want to I really do but – not without a rubber, I don't want any ki-" all words leave her mouth as he holds up the answer to their shared pent up desire, a condom in a blue translucent sachet. Their eyes lock, they no longer needed words, they both knew what came next. Each springs in to action, Lucy slipping her boyshorts down and off her legs, and Mark putting the condom on and resuming his position over her.
Spotted arms wrap around his bare body as they kiss, he slowly pushes forward, head cresting past her entrance and pushing deep in to her body. Their kiss breaks as she gasps, sharp broken breaths between squeals of pleasure filling the van, getting louder and louder as he thrusts in to her over and over. Their bodies in sync, rocking the van side to side as they went at it like animals. Her claws dig in to his back, raking his skin as she holds on tight. Years of pent up desire and daydreams finally coming true for the both of them in this dirty van on the side of the road.
And it's over as suddenly as it began, her wild cackles and moans drowning out his grunts as they climax together for the first time with their lips locked. He could feel every little twitch of her body around him, feeling her tense up as she finishes before finally falling limp. They fight for breath, drenched in sweat and staring deep in to each-others eyes for a moment before he rolled off top of her.
“You know... You go cross-eyed when you cum" he mumbles with a laugh, immediately she shot up right up, face red as can be.
“So what if I do?" She gets on her fours to rummage through her discarded clothes, Mark more than happy to watch her behind. “Want one?" she questions, sitting upright with a cigarette in her mouth and a green pack of Pall Mall menthols in her hand. He nods, Lucy lighting the one in her mouth and handing it off to him, getting another for herself and laying back down with him. “You're real gentle though, I've never had a night like that before."
“It's only fair I try and treat you right" he looks over while taking a drag off of the dart, he wasn't big on menthols yet he savoured taste of her lips on the filter. They lay in silence for quite some time, enjoying the smoke and calming down. “What was your first time like?"
“Are you accusing me of not being a blushing virgin?" she snaps back in a poor attempt hoity-toity British accent, bad enough to make them both laugh. “I'll tell, but you first."
“Alright! I was... 15. Me and my then girlfriend just got off school, both wanted to do it but we couldn't go to my place or hers. We look around for a secret place to do it, ended up going under a old bridge." It felt so long ago yet so recent, Lucy eyeing him in mild disbelief, wanting to see what happened next. “She didn't really have much fun, laying down on the rocks. I was so embarrassed when I finished before her that I just like.. Left."
“That's pretty bad!" she snorts, laughing and coughing over him and her cigarette, thinking over her story, wondering what parts to share and what to withhold. “I was dating this guy called Brian, but he always wanted everyone to call him Duke, he thought it made him sound tough. Total meathead, only passed highschool 'cus he was in the hockey team."
“And? So it was with this guy?" he butts in as she pauses to think, hand gesturing for her to keep going.
“I'm getting there! Anyway it was prom night, and I was all dressed up like him and dad wanted me too. He got drunk and wanted to do it, so we did..." He was grinning and red with embarrassment after telling his story, but she just looks off in the the distance, quiet as can be. “Look it was... Bad, really bad. He's the only one that has fun that night."
“Do you wanna talk about something else?" he mumbles, sensing her discomfort.
“No no, you're fine. He was just awful, but not in a funny haha way. He wanted to prove how much of a 'alpha male" he was and shit like that." She sticks another cigarette in her mouth, she offered him one too but he turned it down. “The guy thought biting me on the shoulder would make me cum, just so... Stupid."
“I mean, it's pretty funny he'd think that."
“Yeah, yeah you're right!" the share a chuckle, bodies tangled up with eachother as they slowly drift towards sleep. It's dead silent in the van, bar the odd car that went by every 10 minutes or so. “I hope this fairytale never ends." She'd always dreamed of being whisked away to the big city by some handsome guy, and now it was happening. The past few hours were pure wish fulfillment for her, the sort of thing she thought only happened in the movies.
“Me too." He knew he was missing out on his trip. His friends were already checked in to the hotel, going to bars, checking out the aquarium and going up the CN tower. But he didn't envy them, not in this moment as he drifted off to sleep with Lucy as his side.
