The young woman’s strong posture falters a moment. She takes a deep breath and responds. “What is it you want.”

“I…” Sylvari glances around the village, seeing everyone watching her with a mix of reverence, fear, and some confusion. “I just need someone to help deliver a child… for one of my humanoid servants. I hear you are skilled. I just want you for that little bit. Just… come on.”

She holds out her claw, producing the bag. “I offer you this, just hurry along, now. You are wasting my time.”

The townsfolk urge the young woman along, so she finally sighs and says, “Fine. Let me grab my things, and we can be on our way…

The dragon takes to the skies, her former childhood friend clenched tightly in her hands. She glances around the mountain peaks, not seeing any sign of the lover she left behind. Hopefully, she can fly far enough away as to be away from his territory.

Cassia, meanwhile, screams as the speed the dragon flies is so fast. She watches in true worry as her home, and the familiar mountainsides, disappear into the horizon.

When the two land, Sylvari finally puts the midwife down and lets out a loud whoop. “That was fun, wasn’t it? I didn’t think I could go that fast!”

Cassia clings to a nearby rock, her legs shuddering so violently she can’t stand. “I… I… I don’t know what’s going on here!”

Sylvari looks to her, gasps, and then places her hand on her own forehead. “Oh, shoot, I’m sorry. I forgot I haven’t told you yet. Cassia… it’s me! It’s Ben!”

Cassia freezes, her whole body locked into place after that bomb had been dropped. The silence around the two friends sits for quite some time, before she covers her mouth, leaning forward, convulsing.

“I… I’m sorry if I scared you,” Sylvari says. “I’m still getting used to this new form and all an- wait, are you laughing!?”

Cassia gasps, holding back the laugh, but her eyes water and her lips twitch. “I’m sorry!” she wheezes. “But I’m as good as dead, so its okay if I call that a load of shit, right? Ben left the town without saying ‘goodbye.’ He could be dead. Maybe you killed him, but then again, you’ll kill me son too so screw it. Stop joking with me, Dragon. Where is your servant? Let me get this done and over with.”

Sylvari sighs and collapses down, letting her chin rest on her hands. “I’m telling you the truth. I was transformed, but it is me. I didn’t call you because of some servant. I called you because of me. I’m… well, I got an egg brewing inside me, and my father didn’t exactly tell me everything I needed to know to be a mother. He was expecting me to sire children, not birth them.”

Cassia frowns. “Are you… not going to eat me, then?”

“It would be extremely awkward, given the circumstances. I am not that kind of dragon… I think. You’re my friend, Cassia. I just… I just need your help.”

“Well, I mean, this would be weird either way. If you’re Ben or not, it doesn’t matter. You have a kid in there, and I’ll be damned if I see it get hurt. Just… just promise me you’ll be a good dragon and protect our village and stuff.”

“I think I can handle that. Just as long as my, uh, mate, doesn’t find anything to object over there .”

“Ben couldn’t find himself a woman, yet here you are with a violent mate. You couldn’t be any more different.,” Cassia says. “Alright, so, I can’t stay here forever, so how about I teach you what I know about birth, and you can use that dragon noggin of yours to piece together the rest of it? Once you’re satisfied, you can send me back home. And, if you are Ben, we can call this even for that thing I owed you.”

Sylvari smiles. “Oh, yes, that. Well, sure, you got yourself a deal.”

Cassia rolls her eyes, and then sits on her knees, placing her hands upon them. “Alright, so the first thing you need to know is that good breathing is the key to everything…

Months had passed since Sylvari had first shed her human identity. Teragargax had tried to bring her back on multiple occasions, acting all haughty and arrogant, but she had developed on her own. She was no frail waif, and she stood up to him. In the ensuing conflict, she had come out on top.

“My first draconic lover,” she had told him, “I am not yours to own, but you hold a special place in my heart. When I call upon you again, we may join together upon the piles of gold.” She ended the exchange with a lick across his cheek, and the mighty dragon left her, a friend, a lover, yet no more a tyrant.

She also developed a rapport with the people of the village. Whenever they had a problem with monsters or dangerous raiders, she would deal with it, and they will shower her in glittering gold.

So, now Sylvari is a content dragon, piling up some gold on the side of the mountain she calls her home and laying on it and staring up at the stars, the very same stars which had granted her this wish she had never thought she had. As her eyes drink in the vast expanse beyond, she ponders the mysteries of the universe and the origins of the rock that had transformed her. Her body, however, tells her that it is time for another miracle.

Sighing, she closes her eyes, digging her heels into the mountainside. She breathes, in and out, in and out.

A dragon carries her eggs for months at a time. The complex beings within take awhile to gestate, and will take even longer to fully form and hatch. Her whole body heats up, the her body glowing, sending a beacon throughout that tells people that the dragon is active. But for what purpose, no one would know for certain.
