Longway From Home - Chapter 1: Orbs of Bullshit
After getting drunk at a party, Jacob Longway has the unfortunate encounter with an orb of energy, one that displaces him into another universe. How annoying.
Now instead of having to deal with rent and taxes, he has to deal with a geeky roommate, reversed gender roles, and... hyenas?
My first time really writing a story. I hope it's not too bad
I would have uploaded earlier, but SoFurry was down. So yeah.
The car rumbled as it drove down the road. Looking out, I could see buildings pass as I rested in the back seat. I made a game out of counting them to pass the time. Eventually, I got bored of that and instead looked into the rear-view mirror. I could see my agent's eyes focusing on the road. She gave me one quick look before putting her attention back on driving.
“Don't worry, we're almost there," she said.
Rather than the typical human visage that you would expect to see, I instead saw brown, spotted fur, big round ears, and a long muzzle protruding from her face.
As unbelievable as it was, she was a hyena. An anthropomorphic hyena lady.
Now you might be wondering what kind of crack I'm on, and that's a fair assumption. The thing is, I wasn't on crack.
So then how did I get to be in this lovely situation you may ask? Well, it all started with beer, games, and a big ball of fuck you.
I had flown into Australia the night before, visiting one of my friends. Or as he would put it, 'one of my mates'.
He was the kinda guy that liked to party. Of course, I had no complaints about that, as a guy who liked to party myself. So what did he do when I first arrived?
He staged a party.
I naively expected there to be Foster's at the party, but whenever I'd mention this, they'd always give me a funny look and tell me that if I wanted to be a 'good cunt', I needed the real shit: VB. Wasn't too bad if you ask me. Not the best I've ever had, but still pretty good. And of course, I drank enough to get myself wasted.
Did you know you can drink when you're eighteen in Australia? I thought that was pretty cool.
Anyway, I had just done partying and was walking back to my hotel room when suddenly, this big orb of lightning just decided to appear in my face ('cause why not). Then the next thing that's happening is I'm waking up in the hospital.
I had the killer of all hangovers as expected, but what I didn't expect was there to be a hyena in the room.
And so I did the first thing anyone would do in this situation and panicked. I started throwing any ol' shit I could find. Pillows, shoes, it didn't matter. I didn't realize that while I was doing that the hyena was actually trying to talk to me.
A frickin' talkin' hyena. Wearing a doctor's uniform. Even with that heart-checker thing around its neck. A stethoscope, I think it's called. Judging by the voice, the doctor was also female.
After I had calmed down, the hyena-doctor-lady told me that I was found unconscious and in a coma for eight hours.
At first, I thought I might have been in some sort of drug-induced haze, to which the doctor told me that wasn't the case and that she was actually a hyena person. It also seemed to garner a confused look from her, as if I had asked her some dumb, obvious question.
I don't know why, but I decided not to tell her what exactly happened, and that I didn't really remember much apart from going to a party and getting drunk. She didn't seem completely convinced, but let the subject go, whether out of fear of offending me or whatever.
Now that I was wide awake, I was able to fully take in her features. And she looked… oddly human. Not the kind of feral-looking hyena you'd expect. Her eyes and face held a lot more emotion than you'd think. She also had a long tuft of brown fur on her head, giving her this punk-like haircut. It complimented her quite nicely and helped to make her look all the more human.
Before we could talk about anything else, two bigger hyenas in finely-tailored gray suits walked in. They went up to the doctor, telling her that they were from '_HPA' and that they would like to speak to me privately, to which she quickly obliged. I realized from their voices that they were both also women, which I thought was a little strange. But honestly, that was the _least strange thing about this whole situation.
As the doctor left, the two hyenas came up to me and introduced themselves as the Human Preservation Association, some kind of government body I was guessing. They asked me if I had any ID with me. That was the moment I realized that I was in a hospital gown and all my shit was gone. I'm not sure what happened, but it seemed like I lost my phone, wallet, and anything else I may have been carrying.
Fucking portals, I swear…
Didn't seem like the doctor had any of it either, otherwise they would have taken it from her. And so instead they asked me a slew of questions, like my name, my age, that kind of stuff. I tried to be as honest as possible, until we got to the part where I passed out, to which I told them the same story I told the doctor. Luckily, they seemed to buy it.
After the slightly invasive questioning was over, they told me that I needed to come with them for some DNA testing. I wasn't sure why, but I didn't want to get in any trouble, so I went with them anyway.
And man, these girls were big. But even though they were kind of intimidating, they were actually quite nice. They weren't just the emotionless government robots I expected them to be.
I was initially worried about paying the bills and asked them about it. But apparently humans here get free healthcare.
Ooh yeah, free healthcare!
Anyway, I followed them out of the hospital where they led me to some shady, gray car with tinted windows.
Could not get anymore cliché than this, I swear.
I got into the car, and they drove me to a big office building with the words 'Human Preservation Association' at the front.
Inside, there were a lot more hyenas. Most of them had been brown and spotted, but some of them were actually more of a grayish color, with stripes running across their whole body. And they had pointed ears instead of round ones. There was even one who was an even darker shade of brown. They also had pointy ears much like the striped ones.
There were also a few humans roaming about, but every hyena I had encountered so far had been female. Where were all the men? Sure, there were a few male humans, but even then, a lot of the humans in the building had also been female.
They took me into a room where they had a bunch of machines set up. Mostly DNA stuff like fingerprinting. They took mine and looked through their databases to find absolutely nothing. No trace of any family or anything. They were flabbergasted, as if I was just a ghost that appeared out of nowhere. Which I suppose was half true, but I didn't wanna tell them that. They just looked at me, but I didn't really know what to say, and it looked like they didn't know what to think.
After all that stuff was done, they led me to temporary housing, since I pretty much had nowhere to go at that point. They said that they would do their best to find some proper arrangements soon, so I could go back to living a normal life.
Man, could I even do that? Go back to living a normal life? I mean, I just got sucked through some damn orb and shat out into an alternate dimension. One where hyenas seemingly evolved in place of humans. But then again, there were humans anyway? This is all fucked.
I knew Australia was dangerous, but I didn't think it would have orbs of bullshit. Jokes aside, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be. I surprisingly adjusted quite quickly, despite the circumstances. The housing they gave me happened to come with a computer. It gave me access to the research I needed to see how different this world was. And lemme tell you, I found out a lot about this world.
For one, the reason I had seen almost exclusively women was because here, the women were apparently in charge. Well, I wouldn't say 'in charge', but they were definitely the more dominant gender. Much like the men were back on Earth. Well, my Earth.
This meant that the gender roles here were completely reversed. So instead of the men being the ones doing all the heavy lifting and leading and shit, it was the females. The women here were the ones stereotyped as being strong and protecting. All the places that you would normally see men were now filled with women. So, like, construction jobs, for example, were ones that women were best at. It helped that hyena women were also generally larger than hyena men.
The men, on the other hand, were in places where women would usually be. Things like nurses, teachers, and the like, were now dominated by the men. Men were the fairer sex here, and they were just really… girly. They tended to like all the things that women back home liked. Shopping, wearing flashy, bright clothing. If it weren't for the fact that I was in a different universe, you could easily mistake them for being gay. Not to say that that's how all gay people act, but still.
Which meant I'm essentially a girl now. Great.
Well, I didn't like any of that girly shit, so did that mean I was a tomboy? Or whatever the fuck the equivalent was? I actually tried looking this up, and apparently the correct term was 'janegirl'. Oh ha, ha. Very funny, universe.
Oh yeah, and you know those other kind of hyenas I saw? Those were the other hyena races. There were four different kinds of hyenas, and they fit into all the areas humans would usually be. For example, spotted hyenas were essentially the white people of this world. Brown hyenas were the black people (makes sense). Striped hyenas were the Asians, and for some reason the aardwolves were the Hispanics/Latinos/Brazilians.
And of course, we can't forget about the humans.
Apparently, humans here were not that common at all. In fact, they were downright rare, with a population of less than a million. One million was quite small when you took into consideration that the hyena population was seven billion. And that was worldwide, too. This was the whole reason HPA existed at all, to preserve our species, I guess.
So not only am I the equivalent of a girl, I'm also an endangered species. Double great.
Other than that, though, the world was mostly the same. Same history, same people. But of course, they weren't exactly the same people. Over here, they were all… hyenas.
Political figures, celebrities, even YouTubers. Have you ever wanted to know what PewDiePie looked like as a hyena? What about Markiplier? Yep, both hyenas. Not only that, but they were also women. And that, is fucking weird. Hearing people you know with opposite-sex voices is really jarring. They still sounded like who they were supposed to be, but with a lighter, more feminine tone. Not to say they sounded girly, of course, they still had that rugged tomboy voice that most hyena women seemed to possess. And if it weren't for the internet, I wouldn't have known any of this.
Man, isn't the internet great? You can find out anything by just searching it up. But do you know what it's also good for? Porn. Having access to the internet also meant access to all the porn I want. Look, I got curious, okay? I mean, can ya blame me? Truth be told, it wasn't much different from the porn back home.
Except for the fact that everyone was a fucking hyena now.
God, I sound like such a demented fuck. Hyena this, hyena that. If I was in a mental hospital this whole time, I hope the doctor would end me.
Okay, the porn was different. But that was because of the gender-role fuckery going on. Instead of the focus being on the girls, it was now the guys, which really sucked. If I'm gonna be watching porn then I want my eyes on some titties, dammit.
And that reminds me, I remember hearing some obscure fact from a YouTube video of how apparently, female hyenas have some sort of fake cock? After rifling through this universe's Pornhub, I can safely say that they don't have that (thank god).
Anyway, those were the most notable differences here. There may have been some I didn't list, but I couldn't really think of anymore. Long story short, this place was hyena land.
After having spent some time in the housing that was generously provided, HPA had told me that they finally found a candidate for my new, true home.
And so here I was, riding in the back of this car, on my way to my assigned home. I didn't really want anything fancy, so I told them not to go all out on me. I just wanted a simple apartment. Not too big, not too small. And luckily, they were able to find one for me. The only caveat being that I needed to share it with someone else. I didn't mind, though. Hell, I was actually kind of excited. It'd be nice to have someone to talk to. Maybe they'd be cool and we could hang out, play video games and stuff.
The car finally stopped next to the apartment building.
“Now, if she tries anything, or you're just not feeling comfortable, don't hesitate to call me, all right?" Sam spoke up.
“Yeah, yeah, I gotcha." I stepped out of the car as she let loose a chuckle. “See ya, Sam."
“Goodbye, Mr. Longway. Stay safe." She gave me one last smile before driving off.
I turned to face the building itself. It was large and brown, with a multitude of windows covering the structure. The place looked cozy, and less than half a dozen floors tall. It was perfect.
As I stepped through the main doors, I was surprised to see someone waiting for me. A spotted hyena dressed in casual business attire, most likely the owner. And for once, it was a male hyena.
“Hello, you must be Mr. Longway." He stuck out his hand for me to shake. “My name is Allen. I'm the landlord. It's very nice to meet you," he finished with an eager smile.
“Likewise," I said, taking his hand.
“You know, I was quite excited to hear you were coming. I've never met a human before!"
“Is that right?"
“Yeah! I'm sure a lot of the other tenants would like to see you too. Having a human around here is a big deal."
I don't doubt that.
He looked to the ground, fidgeting a little.
“I'm sorry if this is rude to ask, but would it be all right if I could take a picture with you?" He looked back up to me.
“Oh, uh, sure."
His nervous expression switched to one of delightful glee. I couldn't really blame him, I guess. If I were to meet an endangered species, or even just a celebrity, I'd probably want a picture too.
He held me close in one hand as he pulled out his phone with his other, aiming the camera toward us. I smiled, giving him a peace sign, as he took the photo.
“Thank you so much. I can't wait to show my friends that I actually met a human!"
“Uh, yeah, no problem. Do you think you could help show me to my apartment now?"
“Of course! Follow me this way."
We walked down a corridor to some stairs as he continued talking.
“Looks like you're on floor two, apartment number three. You'll be sharing your room with Jesse Standwell."
“What's she like?"
He turned to look at me. “I haven't talked to her much, but she seems like a nice girl."
We walked up the stairs making it to the second floor, where we walked down another short corridor, stopping beside a door with a number three next to it. He knocked on the door before a shaky voice called out.
“H-hello?"
“Mrs. Standwell? Mr. Longway is here to move in."
“I-in a sec!"
I could hear the sound of someone fumbling inside, most likely running around trying to get ready.
Allen turned towards me once again. “So, I guess I'll leave you to it, then?"
“Yeah, I can take it from here."
He nodded. “Have a nice afternoon, Mr. Longway." He smiled and went back the way we came, out of sight.
The door to the apartment slightly opened as a brown, furred muzzle poked its way through.
“H-hello," it spoke.
“Hello." I smiled, letting loose a low chuckle. “May I come in?"
“Y-yeah, sure!"
She opened the door wider so I could step in. Once I did, she closed the door and offered her hand to me. “I-Im Jesse."
I shook her hand. “Jacob. It's nice to meet you."
She gave a nervous smile. “Y-yeah."
She was a spotted hyena, much like most I've met. She had on a grey sweatshirt hoodie, along with a pair of black sweatpants, with two white lines running down each leg. Black, thick-rimmed glasses adorned her face, giving her this cute nerdiness. Her head came up to my eye level, and although she'd be kind of tall for a human girl, she must have been short by hyena standards. And like most hyenas I've met, she had that same tuft of fur on her head.
“Care to show me around?" I said, gesturing my arm out.
“O-oh! Of course!" She opened the first door to the left. “So, uhm, that's the bathroom."
“Good start." I retorted, smirking. She let out a nervous laughter as she continued the tour.
After going through the rest of the apartment, we finally stopped at one last room. Opening the door, I could see a single bed, along with a desk and a closet.
“And this is your room. I-if you need anything else, make sure to let me know. All of your belongings s-should already be packed away," she said, completing the tour.
“All right, thank you." I gave her a quick smile, to which she reciprocated as she left.
I slumped onto the soft bed, letting out a tired sigh.
Maybe I could get used to this universe.
