Blood in the Dark
A man engaged in a transactional arrangement with a mysterious creature gets more than he bargained for.
You trudge through the rainy streets, the foggy overcast sky hanging over the city like a shroud, the stabbing light of orange streetlamps creating hazy halos of light in the gloom.
Work had been exhausting as usual, another day spent demolishing old buildings down on the waterfront to make way for the expansion of the shipyards. Your body was sore and tired from swinging hammers and carrying rubble, and the dour weather hadn't made it any easier.
You pull your jacket in tighter and count the numbers on the tall rows of tenement houses as you head down the street.
45, 47, 49, 51, 53...
55.
Same as always.
You turn into the overbuilt, art-deco doorway and produce an old, well worn key from within your jacket. To all the world it looks like you're coming home from a long day at work.
But this isn't your house.
You move briskly up the grey stone stairway, the sound of your steps echoing through the whole building. You pass the flats on each floor as you ascend, wondering if anyone here has ever taken notice of your weekly visits to this place. You've certainly never met anyone on the stairs. Finally you arrive at the top floor and the black door that sits alone there.
You straighten yourself up, clear your throat and knock the door as you were instructed.
Th-thump th-thump.
Like a heartbeat, you were told.
You wait for an uncomfortable period of time before the door unlocks and swings open silently.
On the other side is utter darkness, the faint light from the stairwell failing to penetrate even a meter into the room beyond.
You still your heart and walk in, take a hold of the door,
And close it shut behind you.
You are now blind, lost in the midnight blackness.
But you're not alone.
You feel a hand take yours, sharp nails and smooth skin running across your palm. As with every encounter you've had with her, your heart begins to race and a cold sweat builds in the small of your back. For all it's reassuring smoothness and gentle grasp, the hand that is now pulling you onwards is clearly not human. The fingers are too long, and the back of the palm is covered in soft fur.
"Hello again, my dear. Come, I'll get you sat down."
Her voice is like a velvet kiss, soft and warm with an aristocratic accent. Just hearing it puts you at ease, though part of you wonders if her soothing voice, along with the all-encompassing darkness, are just part of her unnatural aura.
You let her lead you through the inky blackness of her home. Even though you've been here several times, the layout of the top floor apartment still eludes you. The creak of bare wooden floorboards is the only sound.
Eventually she stops, and you hear the scraping of wood across the floor. You reach out and find a wooden chair behind you.
"Please, sit yourself down."
Gingerly, you lower yourself onto the chair and begin taking off your jacket.
"Let me take that for you. How have you been?"
You hold out your jacket and it is lifted from your hand and placed somewhere nearby with a rustle of fabric.
"I've been doing alright, mistress."
You cringe a little to hear your own voice, coarse and common in comparison to hers. She doesn't seem to mind though.
You hear her humming contentedly to your left.
"That's good. How is your mother faring?"
You swallow. Your mother had been ill for quite some time, but you'd never had the money to get her the treatment she needed. Until...
"She's doing better now, mistress. I've been able to secure a bed for her in the city hospital."
You hear a contented humming.
"Splendid, I'm glad to hear it. Hand me your shirt, sweet. Wouldn't want to stain it, would we?"
You unbutton your shirt before pulling it over your head. You shiver in the unheated room, to the amusement of your patron. The darkness clearly didn't obscure her vision.
"Don't worry, you won't be cold for much longer."
She takes your hand in hers and gently pulls you to your feet.
"I've put your money in your jacket, darling. Just remember the chair is right there behind you if you need it, okay?"
You nod and brace yourself as you feel her draw close.
You shiver as she embraces you, one arm wrapped around your waist while another braces your neck and pulls your head to the side, exposing your throat. Then comes the sensation of her hot, wet breath.
You tense up as she pauses for a moment, panting, invisible in the absolute darkness.
Then her fangs sink into your neck.
You grunt in pain as she fastens on, her clawed hands gripping you tight as you instinctively flinch and try and break free of her. Her body is thin and wiry, and you can feel her soft fur as it runs across your bare chest.
You grit your teeth as you feel her groan in pleasure before pulling her teeth free. She then begins to lick at the wound, the wet touch of her long, thin tongue running over your blood-slick skin.
She greedily laps up the blood as you feel it dribbling down your chest and back, while the hand on your neck moves up to run through your hair.
You begin to relax a little, this is usually the point where she'll stop. She'll put a bandage on your neck, clean up the rest of the blood and then you'll be on your way, your jacket pocket heavy with a thick wad of £100 notes.
Any second now she'll stop, right?
You hear her moan again as she presses her short, blunt snout against the puncture wound, and begin to suck and slurp at the hole.
She isn't stopping.
"Mistress?" You try and keep the rising concern out of your voice. What the hell had you gotten yourself into? She's never done this before! You're starting to feel lightheaded.
"Shh... just a little more..." she mutters, before scraping her needle-sharp teeth across your shoulder. It's agonising, and you feel it burn across your flesh.
"AAHHH! Stop! Please!"
Your yell echoes into the inky blackness around you, and immediately gets a reaction out of the creature. She jolts, and loosens her grip, before letting out a high pitched whine.
"Oh, oh dear. I'm so sorry darling. Please, hold still, I'll get you something." Her voice is trembling, and you can hear her normally silent footsteps thudding away in haste through the murk.
You stand there, feeling panic rise in your chest as she fails to return. Has she abandoned you? Your heart races as blood runs down your arm and drips onto the floor.
Th-thump. Th-thump. Drip. Drip. Drip.
You start to shake, hyperventilating. How the hell are you going to get out of here? You begin stumbling around in a panic, before nearly tripping over the chair she'd set up behind you. You grab a hold of it and lower yourself down, settling and trying to slow your heart rate.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
You hear the urgent thudding of her footsteps returning.
"Here, hold your arm up, sweet. I'll wrap it." She still sounds shaken. Without much else in the way of options, you comply and let her wrap your whole left shoulder in coagulant bandages.
"I can only apologise," she says, with some of her decorum restored. "I'm afraid you're just too delicious, young man."
She presses an envelope into your hands.
"For your troubles. I'll pay you twice the usual rate."
You grab the money and stick it in your back pocket.
"Can I have my shirt, please?" You just need to get out of here. You've learned your lesson. No amount of money was worth being prey for this vampire, if that was even what she was. Even if you were walking away with more than a month's wages.
But as she helps you dress, you feel the touch of her soft fur again, and the smell of her body. The warmth of her breath. You shiver, and she pauses for a moment. There's a noise that sounds worryingly like she's licking her lips.
"You know, I'm not sure you should be heading back out so soon, dear. I'd hate for you to pass out on the walk home after losing all that blood. You should come lay down for a while where I can keep an eye on you. And I happen to have a big, comfy bed here..."
You freeze. Her voice has shifted from velvet to liquid gold, dripping with power and desire. And she's not exactly being subtle about what she wants.
"And don't worry, I'll compensate you for your time. It's my fault you're hurt, after all. I think double what I've given you already will cover it."
That's a lot of money. But (at least in your head) there's a difference between being a blood dispensary and actually prostituting yourself. Part of you still thinks you need to get the hell out of here and never look back, but...
You don't know if that's an option any more. You find yourself craving another whispered word in your ear, another caress of her long nails across your scalp. Another moan into your neck as she feeds on you. You want to be her prey.
You begin to shake. You're in way over your head, in the domain of a creature more dangerous than you could imagine.
"Don't be afraid, child," she whispers into your ear, as if reading your thoughts. "Just take my hand, and I'll look after you."
She runs a claw down your arm and wraps it round your hand, making your hairs stand on end.
"Are you coming?"
You swallow.
"Yes, mistress."
You let her pull you to your feet and lead you through the darkness again. As she does, you can hear her humming contentedly. The tune thrums through her body and into yours, the vibrations helping to soothe your nerves and slow the thumping of your heart.
Her hand squeezes yours as you feel her slow, and you can hear her breath begin to quicken.
"We'll, that's us here. You can get undressed while I get the bed ready."
You clumsily take off your boots and trousers, leaving you standing in your boxers while your ears pick up a *whumph* noise and the creaking of bedsprings.
"Come to my voice, dear. The bed's right here."
You move forwards unsteadily, your hands out in front of you, until you feel something soft and fluffy. A cushion?
Your mistress giggles.
"That's my thigh, darling. Up you come."
You blush bright red as she reaches down and grabs your wrist before pulling you onto the bed with surprising ease. You land on to the luxuriant duvet, barely sinking into it before you feel an arm wrap around your waist and her skinny body press against your back. She sighs and squeezes you gently, nuzzling your neck. You feel a flush running across your body. It feels nice, having someone hold you like this, even if you aren't exactly sure what she is.
"There. How are you feeling, you poor thing?"
"A little better now, mistress. You know, you scared me back there."
She lets out a sigh, before squeezing you a little tighter.
"I know, I'm sorry my dear. I was just intoxicated by your blood, it's the only problem with our arrangement."
"How so?" You frown, puzzled.
"I don't know if you are aware, but you are a universal donor. Your blood can be given to anyone who needs it." She coughs, sounding a little embarrassed. "It, uh, also makes your blood delicious for my kind. Addictive, even."
"But I'll admit I've broken the rules even there. We're not supposed to get attached to humans. I should have found someone else to feed on weeks ago, but..."
She intertwines her long fingers in yours.
"I must confess I've grown rather fond of you, more than decorum would normally allow me to express. I've watched you from the darkness, working in that warehouse, watched you care for your poor sick mother. I wish..."
"I wish I could share in your life. I've been alone for a very long time."
You lie there in silence for a moment, unsure how to respond for a moment, before you find words. You feel her shrink away, regretting opening herself up to you.
You squeeze her hand and turn your head to lay it against hers, feeling a big, fluffy ear twitch as you do so.
"Mistress? Can I ask you a favour?"
"Anything."
"You can see me, right? I'd like to be able to see you."
She freezes.
"I... I can. If it's what you desire. But I must warn you, you may not like what you see."
You feel her wriggle free from your grasp and can barely hear her pulling herself up off of the bed, then the creak of a floorboard as she pads across the room.
You hear her take a deep breath and exhale.
Then, something appears in the gloom. A sliver of white, hanging in the darkness. You gaze at it, bewitched for a moment, your eyes locked on the only object in the sea of black.
The light shifts and then expands, and as it does you begin to process what you're seeing. It's an exterior window, looking out into the gloomy, lamplit night. The light floods in from outside.
You blink a few times, adjusting to the return of your sight, beginning to make sense of the room you're in. The floor and walls are bare, undecorated. The bed is the only piece of furniture in the room.
It's only when she moves that you notice her. You jolt as she moves closer to you. It's like suddenly becoming aware of a predatory animal that has snuck up on you.
And in a certain way, that's exactly what she is.
Her body is thin and lanky, covered in pure white fur that's thickest on her chest. Her limbs are too long, oddly proportioned and ending in clawed digits that flex and twitch as she observes you silently.
Her face...
She has the blunt, short snout of a bat, stained red by your blood and collared by a thick ring of luxurious fur around her neck. Her fluffy ears stick up rigidly, almost looking like horns in the murky half-light. And her eyes...
Her eyes are dark, fathomless pits that draw you in, like gleaming black pearls. You find yourself transfixed, unable to look away.
She silently stalks towards you, her eyes locked onto yours. You can't break eye contact, you can't even blink.
She clambers up onto the bed and crawls over to you. Her eyes are black holes, inhuman and unreadable. She straddles your body, looming over you, a shiver running through her body.
"Well, is this to your liking?"
You try and speak but can't make the words. With her this close, her presence is overpowering. This seems to amuse her.
"I told you this might not be the best idea. I can hear your heart quivering. Such delicious prey you are. But do not worry..."
She leans down and presses her snout against your lips. The touch is electrifying, forcing a moan out of your throat. The power of her aura (or whatever it is) thrums in your bones, submitting you to her will entirely. You still can't break eye contact with her.
"You are safe here with me..."
Then she moves to kiss you deeper, her thin, muscular tongue pushing into your mouth, and closes her eyes.
It feels like you've finally surfaced after being held underwater. You gasp and shudder, warmth returning to your limbs and the fog lifting from your mind. You try and shift, to move, but she gently holds you down. She continues to kiss you, one hand entwined in yours, one pressing down on your chest directly over your thumping heart.
You are in heaven. Everything she does, every movement she makes is soft, gentle, but utterly irresistible. There is no possibility of refusal. You belong to this creature in ways you can't even comprehend, enthralled to her power both of your own volition and by the chains of her unnatural mastery.
Of course, you barely think of any of this as she gently kisses you, her gorgeously soft fur running over your skin, until you drift off into dark, dreamless sleep.
