Taming the Wilds Chapter 25
Exploring the cavern, Buck faces death. Will his ailment get the best of him?
"So we're just walking in then?" Precariously balanced on Yah Shi's shoulder, Buck gripped a paw full of the lion-dog's fluffy mane to steady himself, slinging his quiver over a shoulder and resting his unloaded crossbow on his lap. "No plan of attack, plans to retreat or anything of the sort?" Dubiousness dripped from his voice, and he tried desperately to keep the sarcasm from his voice.
"I doubt there's anything capable of harming our 'guard-dogs,' so I don't see why not." Bo shrugged and patted his pack-mule of a mate on the wiggling rump, giving his tail a tug for good measure. "I've never seen these boys lose a fight, and I doubt I ever will." The tanuki called over his shoulder, taking the first steps into the cavern's yawning darkness. "Let me have a bit of adventure in my life! I've been tending to flowers for years."
"You'll be fine. Yah Shi's a good boy. He won't let anything happen to you, and I'm right here." Grom echoed Bo's sentiment, parking Buck's wheelchair nearby and covering it with a few stray branches until it was reasonably camouflaged. "Haven't you ever adventured for its own sake?"
"No. Stupid boys sticking their noses where they didn't belong weren't seen again in my village. Caution is a safety net when you live in the Great Forest." Lamenting their choices but conveniently leaving out his capture (While asleep at his guard post, no less) during a human raid of his village and subsequent life as a forced laborer, the rabbitman ducked his head. Swinging a leg over his canine mount's shoulder to take a more steady grip, he sighed, staring down at the dim outline of his human lover and contemplating the slow roll of muscled butt cheeks. At least the view was nice from Yah Shi's back.
"Sounds tough. Yah Shi wishes he could help them." With his tongue hanging from one side of his maw and his toes carefully feeling their way along the path, the komainu looked even dopier than usual, but Buck couldn't deny the smoothness of his gait. It was sweet that the komainu was thinking of him, and after their adventures the day before, Buck had a new appreciation for the dopey dog.
"It's how things are- Well, how they were; before Russell found me." Despite his injury and recent loss, Buck couldn't deny that life was far less fraught with danger since he joined their little community.
For once, since he was a lop-eared kitten, he felt his shell open up, and he could honestly call most of the community his friends. Of course, that only made their loss more poignant. If only he could have been there, fighting alongside his found family, maybe he could have- No. Best not to dwell on such dark matters. He'd seen what excessive grief drove Brigirth into, and he wouldn't put that burden on Grom.
Trickling water echoed through the cavernous path, growing louder by the second. Before long, the cavern opened into a rushing underground river a few feet below a treacherous, water-slickened path. Squeaks echoed through the air above the roar of the water, growing into an ominous chittering and rustling.
Before anyone could react, clouds of creatures descended from the ceiling, revealing canine mouths with far too many teeth on misshapen, bat-like bodies. Snarling teeth snapped at exposed heads, swooping with growing confidence and nearly taking chunks out of Buck's ears.
Trying his best to target the creatures, Buck let loose a volley of bolts in quick succession, bringing down at least three of the hybrid creatures before another snuck past Yah Shi's arms, smashing into the rabbit's face with enough force to throw him backward from his perch. The rush of water grew closer as he wrestled with the creature, his lungs screaming at him for mercy until the icy chill of inky black water swallowed his world, knocking the breath out of him.
Another splash followed his descent and familiar arms dragged him to the surface, taking their place around his chest. "I've got you. We're getting out of this."The soothing baritone of Grom's voice, barely audible over the rush of increasingly treacherous rapids, tried to calm the panicking, sputtering rabbit down as their party's torchlight disappeared into the distance.
A clutching hand grabbed ineffectually at the rocks lining the short cliff, tearing the human's skin open on jagged outcroppings, but Grom never gave up, heaving their combined weight in weaker bursts. An eternity passed drifting in the rapids, accompanied only by increasingly desperate pants and whispered promises from the weakening human.
Just as Buck was about to give up, his eyes drifting closed and his body welcoming the cold embrace of the water below, he felt Grom's body heave once more, catching on an outcropping and using the last of his strength to shove Buck halfway onto dry land. His grip failed him once Buck escaped the pull of the water, and all that was left was a red stain on the rocks and a frantic, shouted sentiment drowned out by a wave that pulled him below the dark water.
Weakly, the rabbitman tried to call out, crawling across wet stones and raising a paw to the direction he last saw the former mercenary. Only the cruel rush of river rapids answered him, and he was forced to look around, his mind racing with the possibility of losing the man he loved. Unnatural, magical light drew his eyes, and he gritted his teeth, pulling himself toward it with shaking hands. One arm's length, then two, then half a dozen more brought him to a door, and with a weak shove, he pushed it open, slamming the wood into something that crashed to the ground and shattered.
A brown blur the size of Buck's fist whizzed from the room, and excruciating pain filled the exhausted rabbit as something impossibly sharp dove into his chest, disappearing as quickly as it appeared. A feeling that Buck could only describe as an internal fight rattled through his chest, like a snake wrestling with its prey.
Black bile poured from Buck's mouth, sizzling as it reached the stone below him and reconstituting into a blob with several evil-looking eyes, advancing toward its unwilling creator with obvious murderous intent. Again the brown blur appeared, this time from within Buck's chest, falling upon the creature with a squeak of triumph. Flashing blades bit into the creature's amorphous tissue, popping the awful thing and leaving behind nothing but rapidly crumbling bits of black ichor.
Panting softly and floating from its fresh kill, tongue cleaning tiny, wickedly sharp blades, a weasel-like creature turned to face Buck, tilting its head curiously. "Big-thing okay? Kin-Kin kill curse." Floating closer, the strange monster poked and prodded Buck's cheeks, wiping away the rabbitman's tears with surprisingly dextrous and gentle scythes protruding from its arms, where hands would be on most. "Curse was eating Big-thing's insides."
Staring in disbelief, Buck took what felt like his first breath since his crippling fight with the assassin. Re-energized, he helped himself to his feet, looking around at an alchemist's den. "I was cursed? Is that why Russel couldn't treat me?" Fighting back the urge to vomit at the remembered sensation of black goo voiding itself from his lungs, he suddenly remembered his missing lover, rushing back to the river's edge with the strange weasel in tow.
Thinking quickly, Buck stared down the dark path, then back at his curious pocket-sized companion. Catching the floating weasel's attention, he gave the peculiar creature an order, still searching the water for a sign of Grom. "Please, I know that you just saved me, and I'd love to thank you properly, but I need your help. Head that way toward the surface. There will be two big dogs and a man with dozens of leather pouches. Tell them Grom's in danger and to hurry."
Without sticking around to hear the creature's words, Buck took advantage of his newfound stamina, shaking off months of rust and breaking into a sprint through the darkness. Whispered prayers to no one in particular filled his brain with every step. Grom had to be alright. Buck hadn't told the wonderful man his true feelings. He hadn't scraped the surface of what they could be. If he-
Finally, as he was about to give up hope, the rabbit heard a triumphant growl and saw the back end of something huge rising from the stone floor. Past the shadow, a paler form kneeled, barely held up by a sparking sword. It could only be Grom.
A snarl broke through Buck's panic, and he threw himself at Grom's attacker, wrapping himself around a stout neck and holding on for dear life as the mammoth bear-like creature thrashed its head from side to side. Bereft of weapons, he turned to the only thing he had in his arsenal; his teeth. Buck-teeth meant for gnawing on a vegetable bit into the creature's neck, unbothered by the spurt of blood messing Buck's fur, and he tore stringy, awful-tasting bits of flesh from the creature's vulnerable spot, digging deeper with every bite.
Weakening struggles lowered the creature to the ground until, with a pitiful whimper, the hybrid creature was brought low by Buck's furious bite. His jaw hurt, and his limbs screamed at him from overuse, accustomed to a softer life, but he stumbled forward, taking the human into his arms and squeezing him so tightly he feared he would break the man's ribs.
Collapsing forward with relief written across his face, the exhausted human buried his face in Buck's neck, letting loose a sob and nuzzling into bloody fur. "You're alright. Thank the heavens you're alright." With weak arms, he clung to Buck, his skin clammy and cold and his breath coming in labored pants.
Sharing in Grom's relief, Buck hobbled the soaked man to a nearby wall, spitting foul-tasting blood from his mouth to the floor below and guiding him to sit away from the corpse of the creature that tried to kill him. The reality of his situation began to set in, and joy took over, manifesting as an aggressive embrace and a litany of bloody kisses across the exhausted human's cheek.
"How did you find me so quickly?" Grom winced, cradling his battered hand and flexing his fingers, showing a mosaic of cuts and bruises across calloused skin. Shivering softly, he leaned against Buck's arm, his muscular frame seeming much smaller with the emotion written across his face.
Resting his chin on Grom's head and cradling the shivering human, Buck explained the strange circumstances of his cured ailment, scarcely able to believe his luck. A slight amount of guilt tinged his words as he explained sending his little savior into the dark to search for their companions, but he justified it with the presence of his mate by his side. If he hadn't shown up, Grom would have died, and he couldn't bear the thought of life without him.
"A curse? All this time, we never thought to contact a priest. So stupid." Grom chuckled, reaching into the tattered remnants of his clothes and retrieving a small leather-covered box. Flipping its lid, he dumped a deluge of water onto the cave's floor before plucking something circular and glittering from within. "I suppose with your body healed- you will be more likely to say yes."
In front of the flabbergasted rabbit, the exhausted human kneeled on one knee, wincing slightly. "Buck, I can't keep almost losing you without telling you how I feel." He began, taking Buck's hand and sliding a ring with a flawless gemstone the same color as Buck's eyes onto the rabbitman's finger. "The thought of losing you is like losing myself. I can't bear another moment agonizing over it, so I'll ask you now. Will you make me the happiest man in the kingdom?" Clearing his throat, he clarified with an uncharacteristically shy smile. "Will you marry me?"
Struck by the human's honestly, Buck could only stare, mouth agape and eyes captured by the luster of the amber gem adorning the ring. A million eloquent responses rattled around in his brain, begging to cross his lips, but all that squeaked through was a strained, half-sobbing "Yes." Repeats of that simple word followed as he dragged the human onto his lap, mashing his lips against Grom's without a care in the world.
Darkness closed in, but strangely, Buck felt it welcomed their love, wrapping them like a dusky blanket. The only sensation that broke through was the heady rush of Grom's tongue against his own and the sweet taste of his lips drowning out the coppery taste of hybrid monster blood. Contented noises vibrated through his chest, and he slid his arms around the shivering human, ignoring the clammy, soaked closing under his paws.
"I know this is probably inappropriate with our friends on their way and a corpse a few feet away, but-" Grom trailed his fingers down Buck's chest, dipping past his waistband. "I'm freezing and can only think of one way to warm up. Do you want to consummate our engagement?" Tiptoeing his uninjured hand over Buck's sheath, the human pulled down his trousers enough to unleash Buck's equine member, encircling the chilled shaft with his fingers.
Struck by the absurdity of their situation, Buck shook his head, wriggling out of his pants and helping Grom to do the same. With gentle paws warmed by a quick puff of his breath, he unbuttoned the man's shirt, slipping it over broad shoulders and revealing crisscrossing shallow cuts over most of his body. "I should have known you'd ask. You haven't been able to keep your hands off me for long, ever since our first time."
Bared to Buck's roaming paws, Grom settled his awakening cock against the rabbitman's with a cheeky grin, his balls shriveled from the cold but loosening under the influence of warm frottage. "Do you blame me? You're so beautiful that it hurts to look at you." Leaning in, he latched his lips onto Buck's stiffened nipple, eagerly stroking the rabbitman's cock until it reached full mast. A thick dribble of drool spilled from his lips to slicken his chilled hands, coating every inch before he maneuvered himself to a squat, kissing Buck's cock against his well-trained hole.
"And you're so dashing I'd almost believe you're the protagonist in a storybook." Buck returned the hairy human's affectionate compliment, placing his paws on meaty hips and burying himself to the root in one practiced thrust. There was no gentle, slow rhythm like their lovemaking was forced into for so long. Instead, Buck pounded into the human's hole with wild abandon, freed from the shackles of his ailment and floating on the sensation of true love.
"I'll be your prince if you want me to, but I'm only wearing the crown, nothing else." Grom teased, meeting every body-shaking thrust with a pelvis-bruising slam of his hips. His innards were like a vice, wringing thin jets of approval from Buck's cock with every clamping shove, but his rear was as soft as Buck remembered it to be, cradling his slapping balls in muscled, hairy excess with every hilt.
Whipped into a frenzy by long-restrained desires, the couple didn't last long, sweating through a mind-shattering orgasm that left Grom filled to the brim and painting Buck's fur with spiderwebs of thick human seed. Collapsing forward, the panting human nipped the base of Buck's ear, bearing down to keep the softening equine member deep in his sloshingly filled hole. "Fuck, I missed that. Getting fucking pounded into the floor."
Buck was about to reply, but the sound of a clearing throat and a happy exclamation from the direction of the creature's corpse silenced him. A fluffy ball of fur barrelled into the sticky couple, and a slobbery tongue bathed their faces in greetings while Bo picked his way through the spreading puddle of blood, aided by the more reserved Lu Meng.
"If you two have finished, I would like to take a look at that laboratory the sharp fellow mentioned before we return home. You can fuck on the corpse of your enemy another time, covered in blood and who knows what else." Bo quipped, sighing as he dug out bandages from one of his many bags and cleaned Grom's wounds, ignoring the cock he sat on.
Laughing as he leaned in for another kiss, Buck leaned back and stared at the ring on his hand, feeling giddy with excitement and unbothered by anything fate may throw at him. He was healthy, engaged, and everything was going to be alright. What more could he desire?
