The man among beast chapter 4
Chapter 4
Two days later, with James and Emerald at night
James lay on his back outside of the tent and looked up at the stars. The last few days have been nice, and no more monsters have been seen after the slimes. After understanding that Emerald and he would be left alone, the guards had also left them alone. Only If they were going to act as fools. Otherwise, James was happy to help with anything as long as Emerald was left alone. James was also thinking about tomorrow when he had to meet the humans of this world. James had heard many rumors about other humans and who he was compared to them. James gathered that he was bigger than most humans, male or female. He was also much more tame than other humans, as he didn't look down on other races.
“James."
James hummed, leaned up, and saw Emerald as she walked out of the tent. She had a blanket wrapped around her and smiled as she looked at him. James got up and walked over to her.
“Is everything okay?"
Emerald nodded as she looked at him.
“Ya, I just want you to come inside the tent it's could out here."
James smiled and wrapped an arm around her waist as they walked back in. He walked her back over to the roll-out mats. James had used the last four pieces of silver he had not in his inventory to buy two wool mats so they wouldn't sleep on the thin ones like the guards. Emerald laid back down, and James sat down on his mat when Emerald spoke up again.
“J-james can I…?"
James smiled as he turned and grabbed her hand like he'd done for the last few nights. Emerald smiled and moved closer to James. When she was close, she rested her head on his arm, and James smiled as she looked at him. But he also saw a worried look in her eyes.
“What's wrong Emerald?"
She blinked, and his smile dropped as she looked away from him.
“I-I been thinking about when we meet the humans. I've heard a lot of things about them. I've heard how cruel they can be to my people “
James understood her worry and held her hand a little tighter. He pulled her closer, and she moved her head to his chest, taking a deep breath through her nose. James's scent calmed her as they lay there. Soon, Emerald was asleep, and James smiled as he held her, as if it felt right to him. He closed his eyes, and soon, he was asleep as well.
The next morning with Emerald
Opened her eyes and looked around the tent. She saw she was lying on James' chest and smiled as she rubbed her head on his chest. Even if this was fake for now, she was so happy to have a partner who made her feel safe and cared for.
The next morning
James and Emerald were at the back of the caravan, and James was cleaning the goblin blood from the mace.
“Hey James! The humans are here!"
James signed and nodded, knowing this was the chance to prove he was right for the job. Emerald quickly followed James up front, and James noticed the worried look on her face. He smiled, then took her hand and pulled her into his side. Emerald blushed but smiled as she rested her head on James's shoulder as they walked up to the front. I saw a few more carts coming with armored humans. They all wore leather armor with shields and swords with a few having a bow and quiver. Naruto noticed a few giving nasty glares as they walked closer.
“Emerald, you go back to the headcart. Something tells me this bunch maybe looking for a fight of some kind."
Emerald listened to James and moved back to the cart. She leaned on the side of the settled cart while the other humans came to a stop. James saw a man walking up to him and started walking his way. Once they stood face to face, James saw he was bigger than this guy. He was a head, if not a little taller than him, and his shoulders were twice his. James guessed he was five-six at the tallest, and his shoulders would barely fill his chest. He had short brown hair with brown eyes. On his side was a short sword with a shield on his back. The older man had to look up at James, and he had a confused look on his face.
“Why is a human with a group of beastmen?"
James hummed as he crossed his arms.
“I choose to be with beastmen rather than my fellow humans. I've long seen human cruelty and vanity."
The man narrowed his eyes as he looked at James.
“Oh, you must be an uneducated fool then."
James smirked as he looked down at him.
“There you are wrong. I can read, write, do math, and have carpenter skills almost on the level of a master. But, right now I'm surviving as the personal adventure for Sir Wildfangs house."
The man blinked then a deeper frown formed on his face.
“What a pity a man with your skills is surviving a beastmen. But we have a job to get done. A goblin village of no more than forty goblins along the border of our kingdoms, as the deal was made years ago. Our two groups will take them on and wipe them out in the morning for now, were going back up the road to make camp along a stream."
James nodded, and the two turned and walked away from each other. James was annoyed by the man's greater-than-attitude. Emerald and the head guard walked up to him when he was close. James looked at the head guard and saw he looked like a mix between a husky and a pit bull. He had light sand-colored fur with a few scars on his right cheek. His eyes were a bright blue with a deep black iris. James looked at the guard and spoke.
“So, a goblin village that wasn't in the mission papers."
The guard sighed and then looked back.
“Sorry, I'd thought you'd heard about them, but now you see why Sir Wildfang sent you."
James nodded as he crossed his arms again.
“Yeah, their attitudes need to be worked on badly. But that's beside the point. They claimed to be camping upstream, so if we have buckets, let's get the water while it's still clean. Also, we need to meet them tomorrow morning to deal with thee goblin. Hee said there are forty of them."
The guard nodded and turned to the others as he walked away. James sighed, then looked at Emerald and smiled at her.
“Sorry, Emerald, I didn't want to close in case that man wanted to fight. Which I thought he would after I told him what I'd seen."
Emerald laughed, then grabbed his hand and squeezed.
“It's okay, James but we've never fought goblins before are we going to be okay?"
James laughed and then pulled Emerald into a hug before he spoke.
“Just stay with me, and I'll ensure we get home. We got a house to make a home after all."
Emerald blushed bright red, and she looked away from him. But James saw her tails wagging with some force. Deciding he'd made her blush enough, James freed his hand and wrapped an arm around her waist. Emerald smiled as they started to walk back to the cart holding their tent.
But They stopped when he heard the hounds talking.
“Damn it, this is infuriating. Now, even the head guard is listening to him. Why the hell do we have to listen to what he says? It was bad enough he has such a hot bitch with him and now we have to listen to him through the head."
James frowned, grabbed his mace, and pulled it out, and Emerald grabbed her sword handle with her teeth showing. James slammed his mace against the wood, making the three hounds jump, and looked over to see the two. James gave the three a nasty glare.
“Call my female a bitch again, and I'll make you three curse your mothers for bringing you into this world."
The three growled as they grabbed their weapons before the head guard's voice rang out.
“What are you all doing!?"
James got in front of Emerald as the head guard came over. James glared over at the guards and saw they looked scared. James huffed as he looked at the head guard.
“They're having an issue with you and me. They think their having to listen to me through you and they called my Emerald a bitch. A word you know is used for rather loss females."
The head guard glared at them as he growled.
“You think I'm a puppet, and to insult a female you know nothing of. You three will sleep outside of camp, and when we get back, your families will hear about these noble heirs or not. You know, while in the years of your required serves to the lord you can't make any trouble if you want to keep your heirships."
The three quickly nodded and started to pull out their tents. The head guard sighed before James heard that voice again.
'You have earned the anger of three noble heirs. Difficulty in gaining better relationships will be increased if not improved. This event has triggered a new quest. Keep the heirs quiet about this event. The quest reward will be two hundred gold and an enhanced one-handed mace.'
James sighed, knowing he'd need the gold and weapon before he spoke up. As they were about to walk away, James held a hand up and spoke.
“Wait."
All five of them looked at him as he took his shield off. He rubbed the back of his head before he spoke.
“I'm sorry for snapping at you lot for what you said about me but not what you said about my girl. So, why don't we all just apologize and let it end here? Better to just end it before it can hurt anybody's family or get Sir Wildfang or the family heads involved."
The three looked shocked that he was offering them a lifeline, and Emerald looked surprised. She'd expected James to want them in trouble for what they had said about him but was glad he was still defending her. The heirs also looked at him for another second before they quickly bowed their heads.
“Thank for letting this go sir and were sorry miss Emerald."
James then looked at the head guard, and he nodded as he looked at him.
“If you two are willing to let it go, then there is no more to be said."
He then turned and looked at the three.
“You three are lucky he's letting this go. I suggest you learn from this moment and think much more before you start to run your mouths."
The three nodded, quickly got the tents out, and rushed to the others.
'Quest completed reward had been granted and are in the inventory.'
James smiled, nodded, walked over, and started pulling their tent out. Emerald grabbed their large bag, holding their sleeping mats. James was glad the tent wasn't as heavy as it looked. After half an hour, James and Emerald had the tent up. While Emerald was setting up the mats, James was preparing their dinner. The meal of the night was some dried meat with bread and cheese. James returned to the tent and saw Emerald without her armor. James couldn't help but look like her figure was only coming out more each day. She had her hair tied back into a ponytail and was dressed in a thin shirt with a new pair of jeans on. James couldn't help but notice how he hips filled out, and her ass took on a nice heart shape. He nodded his head before he started to walk again. Emerald looked over and smiled as she looked at James.
“Hm, I guess life is pretty good right now."
