The Last One

Chapter 1

'Here he was at the back of the lecture hall, siting on his own'. Thought Jamie, listening to the drawling voice of the tutor, explaining all the fundamental of company security.

"....So this is why company 'must' protect themselves from any, and all malicious threats. Not only the ones that are on the Internet, but the ones that are within. Who can tell me why?".

A girl at the front of the lecture hall started to speak. "Threats from within can be much harder on a company than from most external ones, as the once inside a system it is much easier to get, steal or corrupt the information. A threat that originates inside the system has already gained access to the system without being detected, as they are allowed to be on that system".

"Yes that's right Anna. Can you explain what reasons this.....".

Jamie stopped listening at that point; he already knew this from the text books he had read. He liked to read books. Not just the books on his course at the university, but fantasy books as well. The books that he particularly enjoyed were the ones with dragons in. He did not know exactly why he loved dragons, he just did. Ever since the first book about them his uncle had given him one Christmas all those years ago.

Jamie jumped at that point as everyone in the lecture hall start to get up and leave. Quickly packing his books and equipment back into his bag, he started leave with everyone else.

As he left the building that the lecture was in, the bright light of the sun hit him. Squinting, he oriented himself towards the car park. While nearly everyone else started walking towards the housing complex situated at the back of the university grounds. He didn't live in that complex. The university asking price was way too high for him to afford a room there.

Thinking to himself as he walked alone to one of the very few highlights of his life. His motorbike. He felt so free when on his bike. The wind through his clothes, traffic jams were no problem when he could just slip through the traffic. That was very useful when leaving the car park. The ability to go where ever he wanted.

He lived about 11 miles away from the university. That could sometimes be a nightmare if he ever overslept, but he was getting better at waking up in time. The town he lived in was by the coast. It was quite a large town, around 5,000 people lived there, but the tallest building didn't pass the second floor and most of the town was residential housing, surrounding a small supermarket and a few smaller shops.

It was already getting dark when Jamie left the university on his way home. The sky had a dark red tinge fading into a dark blue, almost black. As he was riding through the country lanes near his town a light fog started to creep over the road. When he started through the fog, a slight chill ran down his spine and the hairs on his arms started to rise, even though he was wearing a thick jacket. Slowing down as it became more and more difficult to see, the engine on his bike suddenly died and the lights went out. Hauling on the brakes as hard as he could before he hit anything in the dark fog, he slid to a stop about 30 feet later.

Steadying himself, heart pounding, he tried to start the engine on his bike but to no avail. It would not even turn over. It was as if all the life had just been sucked out of the bike. Wondering what had just happened, he got off the bike and noticed a slight glow through the fog. Not knowing why, he started to walk towards the glow. His mind told him this was a bad idea, but his heart pulled him forwards.

He pushed his way through the bushes on the side of the road towards a field, and the glow got slightly brighter. It was still dark enough for him to hardly be able to see by it though. All of a sudden there was no fog in front of him. It was like a wall. The fog just wasn't there anymore. In a sphere of about 50 feet there was nothing but free clear air. A single figure was standing in the centre staring at him with deep, pale blue eyes that seemed to glow with their intensity. It was only then that he noticed that this figure was not human. It was a dragon.
