Chapter 7

Alida awoke when she felt the partner of her heart shivering beside her. Pulling him close to her and wrapping him tightly inside her wings she breathed deeply allowing some her fires within, to heat the air as it came out of her mouth. The temperature inside the bubble increased noticeably and Jamie soon stopped shaking, cuddling closer to her. Holding him tightly she thought that if he did not get any clothes soon, she would have to keep him close to her body at all times. Although the thought was enticing, he needed to be able to walk freely without freezing to death.

She came to a decision about what to do. Getting up carefully, so as not to wake him, she threw the rest of the gathered wood onto the fire, watching it catch to make sure it would keep Jamie warm while she was gone. Looking back at Jamie for a second, she jumped up unfurling her wings and driving them down, she shot up into the night sky. It was still about an hour before dawn and it took her almost half an hour to reach the coastal town where Jamie lived. It was lit up by the street lights and some of the houses were already ablaze, as the early birds got up, getting ready to go to work.

She quickly located Jamie's house as usual. The amount of times she had been there before, it was almost second nature. His house was on the edge of the town, it was quite large but not luxurious. There wasn't much of a front garden with the property, it was mostly a driveway, it looked rather plain as well. The back of the house was another matter. The Garden was very large, and had thick fir trees all around the edge. They effectively blocked anyone from spying inside the garden, unless you were Alida and could fly!. As she got closer to the house, she started to wonder how to get in without being noticed. It wasn't as if she could just walk in the front door. As she flew over the back garden she saw that his bedroom window had been left open as usual.

She squeezed into his room and looked around. She had been able to see into his room before from one of the trees in the garden, but had never actually been in it. From the tree she couldn't see his floor, and now she was glad. It was a mess. Not so much clothes but other stuff, like electronic devices and things that go into the electronic devices that humans couldn't seem to live without.

Moving over to his monstrosity of a wardrobe, she opened the doors to find more electronic equipment stuffed in the bottom. They looked like half built computers, that wouldn't work, but were humming away quite happily, and flashing every so often. Looking to the top she found a load of clothes on hangers. Rifling through them, she picked out a T-shirt, trousers and a thick coat. Opening the set of draws inside the wardrobe she also picked up a pair of socks and boxers. Swiping up a pair of shoes she shoved them all into a bag she had spotted in the corner of the room.

Jamie jerked awake when he heard voices. By the feel of it he was strapped to a chair. He could feel that he now had a pair of boxers on, or what he assumed were boxers, but otherwise he was still naked. There was someone talking in the room to another person. He sounded like he was in charge as there was authority in his tone of voice.

"What do you mean he is not entirely Human?!?!". He nearly shouted. "He is sat right there and looks pretty human to me!".

"Sorry Sir. His blood work came back and it's not recognised by the system. The DNA structure keeps changing". The second man said quickly.

"Changing?. Changing into what?". The first man asked.

"We don't know Sir. We have some biological experts examining it now. And according to the team that captured him, it took three darts to knock him out". He said.

"Three!?!. Are you sure?"

"Yes Sir, and they used the K3 Darts as well".

"What? Those can knock out a horse instantly".

Jamie then heard metallic echoing footsteps getting closer to him. He stayed as still as he could pretending to still be unconscious.

"What are you?". The man muttered, pulling something that was covering Jamie's head off of him.

Alida was flying as fast as she could back to the place where she left Jamie, she had a bad feeling, as if something terrible had happened. The back pack that had all the clothes in was pressed against her chest with her arms as she flew just above the tree tops. She had been gone for just over an hour and already the sky was bright with the sun rays illuminating the forest in front of her. Her wing muscles where burning at the constant strain of flying so fast but she didn't care. She shouldn't of left him alone in the forest, he was practically defenceless in his human form. What if a predator had found him?. Her thoughts were in a complete turmoil, thinking up the many different ways he could of been killed or harmed while she was gone, when she could of prevented it.

It was another fifteen minutes before she arrived back and immediately knew that her feelings were right, something bad had happened. She could smell that a few strange people had been here recently as well as her mate's scent. She could also smell some blood, but very little. Her rage was starting to build. A group of people had captured Jamie, that much she could ascertain. Looking around to see if she could find any sign of who'd captured him, she tried to retrace his steps from where he'd been lying in the grass. 'He was lying here beside the fire,'she saw where the grass had been pressed down in the shape of a hand with bare foot prints laid on top, 'He got up using his hands and started to walk towards the fire.' The prints where a mess here multiple prints on top of others pointing in every direction.'He turned completely around here, he must of been looking for something,' there was a couple of minuscule spots of blood in the grass. In two different places the patterns in slightly different directions.'Shot twice by something small, from two directions. they had surrounded him'. She saw a much deeper impression in the grass the front of the foot pressed in while the heel of the foot wasn't there. 'He broke into a sudden run, away from two of the strangers but straight in the direction of another'. After a few feet the grass laid flat as if something has slide across it for a bit before stopping another minuscule blood pattern and the strong smell of Jamie lingering. 'Shot a third time and this one downed him'. There were no signs that he had moved after the fall, 'that last one must of knocked him out too'. The marks of a few boots could be seen, the impressions deeper on one of the sets, 'one of them was carrying Jamie'.

Throwing the bag down she started to run in the direction that her love had been taken cursing herself for leaving him so helpless in the woods... 'It's my fault if he gets hurt.... my fault'

Ian was completely baffled by the situation. 'Why was that boy here?. What the hell is that boy?.' He was especially disturbed by the fact the he had taken three K3 darts, those darts where specially designed for his line of work, 'just one should of sent him into a coma, but three!' He shook his head, he would have to interrogate the boy, find out who or what he was.

When they had intercepted a call claiming a creature was running around a university campus they had immediately sprung into action, the last one had evaded them for years. He wanted to make sure that none would be able to threaten them, their power was too much for any single being to wield.

He walked back to his office, which was at the moment the trailer on the back of a lorry, walking around to the back of the trailer, he pressing his finger on the scanner. Waiting for the beep, he opened the door and walked up the steps that folded out he entered the room. It was a compacted down version of the one at head office, the walls had been papered, the floor had a carpet and there were even windows, but they had been tinted in such a way that unless you knew they were there, you couldn't see them on the outside. His desk was an old mahogany, it was tidy and had a monitor, keyboard and mouse on it.

He sat down in the leather chair, leaning back and contemplating what he should do. There was a knock at the door he pressed a button on his desk. "Yes?".

"Sir, the CEO is on the line," one of the junior officers voices sounded through the speaker on the desk.

"Okay, thank you". He replied with a sigh and lifting his finger off the button. He hated his talks with the CEO, that young man was too interested in finding those dragons that he couldn't see there potential threat. Waking up the computer from it sleep he proceeded to accept the incoming video call.

"Ian!". Came a voice out of the speakers before the image had even appeared. a second or so later the picture of a younger man in his twenties appeared on the screen, even he was nearly 30 years his junior. He had short brown hair, a clean shaven face and green eyes. His face was that of a large man, he was well built, although his muscle would not show as he was always wearing a suit. He had a definate sense of authority around him, and he commanded respect from most people. He earnt it from the others. In this instance he was commanding. he had a rather angry expression on his face.

"Ian!. Why is it that I have only just heard about a 'possible' after so long of nothing!?. Why is it that I had to hear this form one of the messenger's in passing rather then a message being sent to me!?. If I hadn't over heard him talking about all the hubbub in your department I would have gone uninformed. I do NOT like being Uninformed!"

Ian mentally sighed, he would have to find out who that messenger was, flapping his mouth around. "Sorry Sir, but we received the report and we had to move quickly to attempt a capture". There was a pause then.

"Well?, did you capture it?" He asked when Ian didn't say anything.

"Sorry Sir but no, it must of left the location before we arrived". He didn't want to be rude to the man, not when he was so close to eliminating the threat once and for all, after all the man would remove him from this post if he wasn't polite, and so close to completely removing the threat he wasn't going to jeopardize it with a simple mistake.

"I'm really starting to get fed up with always turning up nothing, all the reports of 'possibles' and in God know hows many years, not one has been captured. Have you ever tried 'asking' them if they would be so kind as to speak with me?"

"No Sir, they always chose to scarper at the first sign of trouble". He replied in a matter of fact tone.

"Well in any case, I will be sending one of my trusted advisors, and loyal friend to 'help' oversee your operation. He will only answer to me, is that understood?" His boss said, looking directly at Ian as if he was in the room not hundreds of miles away.

"Yes Sir". Was all Ian said, seething inside. He was so close, he would have to make sure that this person did not interfere with his plans.

"Good, I expect results General". With that the call ended.

Following the tracks of the men was easy for Alida, they had not attempted to hide where they were going. This allowed her to think about other things she had been told as a hatchling all those years ago.

"This is the most important law of our race Alida, it the first and foremost that must not be broken." Her father said, "You must not under any circumstances come into contact with the humans. Do you understand this".

She nodded "Yes father, but I don't understand why?".

"They are too self destructive, we once were in very close contact with their species, some even called us friends. That was until their wars started. They tried to ask us to fight with them, but we refused. 'It is not our war', we told them, but that made them angry, and they turned on us. They said we were as much their enemy as the humans they were fighting, so we hid ourselves away, and over the years they forgot about us."

She was only just learning the basics of their race when she was told the laws. She had already broken the law once, just by talking to Jamie but that did not matter now he was becoming one of them. She did not want to break this law, as she was not a violent being, and refrained from unneeded pain. But could she justify possibly hurting others to gain her loved one back. She was confused, and she would have to think on that later finding him was a priority.
