The Long Gift—Chapter 23
#24 of The Long Gift
The Long Gift 23--Inner Peace, Outer Space By Zmeydros AKA Lucien Quinn AKA Alexi Tishen.
They make it through the garage and Leneth opens the door to the outside, but instead of seeing the snowy outdoors, they see the inside of Leneth's ship.
Kurt stares at the ship as he follows them inside. "This is way cooler than any sci-fi space ship I've ever seen. I'm guessing it's impossible to see from outside or something?"
Leneth nods. "Yep!"
Looking at all the smooth panels and other odd surfaces in the ship, Kurt says, "That's good, because I would know this is a dream if the alien ships were visible and your secret was still intact."
"It's not completely intact. About thirty percent of all UFO sightings are of ships that malfunction or end up in a situation where they become partially visible." Leneth sits in the front-most chair--the 3D and holographic displays come to life around her.
Jaime and Kurt just gape in awe. There's an extensive 3D map of the area of Minneapolis that they're in and it looks like a course is plotted almost straight up. Jaime and Kurt take the seats behind Leneth and remain speechless as they look at all the data that's displayed before them. There are graphs, alien text, charts, landmarks, and readouts that appear to show the status of each of their bodies.
After the surprise from the awesomeness of the displays subsides, Jaime finds his seat to be incredibly comfortable. It even has a hole for his tail to go through. The seat feels really sturdy and ready for mishaps, but something is missing... "Len, don't we need to be buckled in?"
After moving a menu aside so she can see Jaime, she smiles. "Yep, but only as a precaution. The ship has an internal field that prevents us from feeling the acceleration, but if it fails or we crash during take-off, we better be wearing harnesses. They'll pop out of the chair when I put it on autopilot. Right now, I'm setting up our flight so we'll get a good view all the way up and all the way down."
A big worried frown forms on Kurt's face. "Is it likely that we'll fall from the sky?"
She shakes her head. "Nope, Chimera ships are safer than any mode of transportation on your planet."
"Whew..." Kurt tilts his head. "Chimera?"
"Oh, that's what the Moaciq call themselves in English." Jaime smirks at Kurt's confused expression.
"That's a good alien-sounding name for them--er, and you. Does it mean anything other than it being the name of your people?" Kurt asks as he looks at all the information in front of him that he can't read.
"It's the word the tribe that conquered all the other tribes used to refer to themselves. In their language, which is a lot like the main language my people use, it didn't have any other meaning. They actually thought words for things came from their god and that 'Moaciq' is what their god used to refer to them in the time before written history." She moves a menu and then interacts with it for a moment.
Kurt nods. "That's really interesting. I bet they had a fascinating culture."
"That god and their culture has been mostly forgotten, but I took a class on them because the professor teaching the class was really hot." A naughty smile forms on Leneth's face.
Jaime knows that smile. "What did you two do?"
"We kinda went to her office had sex during a study break in class a few times. Mmm... She was really good with her tail... I haven't talked to her in a while, but last time we talked, she was about to join an archeology expedition on the other side of the galaxy." Looking off into the distance, she licks her lips. "I want you two to meet her one day. She could lecture about methods of staring at walls and we'd be on the edges of our seats. Best professor I ever had."
"I'd love to meet her. Professors that can do that are one in a billion." Kurt smiles.
Leneth grins. "Professors you can fuck during study breaks?"
Jaime laughs and Kurt chuckles before saying, "I think you know what I meant."
Her grin grows. "Professors that can stick their tail inside you and make you go mad with pleasure?"
Squirming at the thought, Jaime squeaks.
Kurt just laughs and shakes his head. "You win."
With a slight nod, Lenneth says, "Good, now we can start going up until we're in space." A stretchy web-like mesh comes out of the sides of the chairs after Leneth closes all the menus, and the displays start behaving more like windows. Turning around to look at Jaime and Kurt, Leneth says, "Pull each side of the webbing across your chest and it'll merge with itself to strap you in."
When Jaime does as she says, he pulls it across from the underside of the webbing and it merges, holding his arms in place. He starts laughing at his obvious logical failure, and when Leneth and Kurt look at him, they both crack up. When Leneth recovers, she smirks at Jaime. "I guess we don't have to tell you to keep your arms inside the vehicle at all times."
"Nope..." Making a cute face, Jaime asks, "How do I get my arms free?"
"Just ask the ship." Leneth makes a sweeping motion indicating the fine craft that they're in. "It can understand most commands even if the person isn't very clear."
With a grin, Kurt says, "Dear ship, please unrestrain the sexy small-breasted herm beside me."
The webbing parts for Jaime as he giggles at Kurt's request. Fastening it so his arms aren't under it, he listens to Kurt say, "Lenny, how smart is this ship?"
She looks at Kurt and gives him a reassuring smile. "Only smart enough to understand commands and carry them out efficiently. We go out of our way to stop machines from becoming self-aware. I'll tell you all about it on the trip up, I set it so it'll take us an hour to reach orbit."
"Heh, I wouldn't mind if it was as smart as me, as long as it was happy doing its job and you treated it well..." Excitement starts to surface in Kurt and he smiles widely. "Start telling me about your sexy race. I'm starting to believe that I'm not dreaming all this."
Leneth turns her chair around to face Kurt. "Let me give you some basic info first. Stop me whenever you want to just look out the window. I might stop myself too. Going to space never gets old."
Looking down at Minneapolis from high above it, Jaime feels a sense of awe. He's on his way to space and is barely aware of Leneth explaining many of the things she told him to Kurt. Looking at Kurt for a moment during a pause in the conversation, he sees Kurt looking at Earth's scenery and the expression of wonder on his face.
The conversation between Kurt and Lenneth keeps going in little spurts and Jaime keeps taking in the view. He can look down through the floor, even. Every part of the ship is displaying the scenery outside it and he's feeling more and more amazed. Leneth must have plotted a course right through some puffy clouds, because the ship is flying south and up toward a bunch of them. When they reach the clouds, the ship flies through a few of them and he has an urge to reach out toward the fluffiness outside the ship.
After they pass through the clouds they keep going up. When the clouds start looking like small floating cotton swabs and he realizes that he must be in space or very close to space. He can see the blue fringe of the earth's atmosphere that cuts into the blackness of space. His eyes get wet as he thinks about how cool this is. He can't quite see past the glare of the clouds and atmosphere yet, but his view is improving. The ship must be dimming the image of the sun, because he can look at it without it hurting his eyes.
Soon he's high enough to see the clouds over the east coast delivering the latest snow storm of the century. He can see the the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. The tan, gray and brown of the deserts and mountains is beautiful against the lush foliage of the plains and forests. Shallow sandy shores create a stunning cyan color that counterpoints the dark blue of the oceans. Then there's the pure white that blankets the north, outshining everything else. Clouds are in the way of some of his view, but they are strewn across the continent in exquisite patterns that make up for whatever they obscure.
Kurt's crying brings him out of his beauty-induced trance. "You okay?"
"It's so... awesome. I never thought I'd get into space. It's better than I ever thought possible." Looking up at the stars above them, Kurt dries his tears. "Can we dim everything and look at the stars for a bit?"
With a nod, Leneth pulls up a menu and everything is dimmed dramatically. Eventually Jaime's eyes adjust and he sees more stars than he's ever seen. There are areas with so many stars that it's hard to make individual stars out. They make intricate patterns of light and dark in just about every direction.
Pointing at the brightest area of stars, Kurt says, "That's the Milky Way. I'm not sure where everything else is, I've never seen so many stars."
"I know, I remember the first time my parents took me up into space. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I asked so many questions that my parents had to delay our trip home for another hour and a half." The smile on her face is warm and peaceful. "I'm going to take you two on a trip someday to see some of the stuff that's out there."
"I'd love that." Kurt says.
Bouncing slightly in his seat, Jaime says. "Oh, wow, I can't wait."
Suddenly, Kurt looks from Leneth to Jaime. "Being this high up must have cleared my head. I know what I want to do now. No matter what happens between us, I want to be part of the Maociq race and I want my Chimera form to be like Rita from our campaign, with some of the traits you two have."
"There's time before we go back to school; you could get CZ when we get back to Leneth's house." Jaime pats Kurt's arm. "Then we could all have hermy fun right before or after school starts."
Leneth leans forward and looks into Kurt's eyes. "Wait, do you think something might happen to our relationship?"
"No, I think it will work out, but life's full of unknowns and I don't want anything to stop me from being one of your kind. Being able to go to space and feeling what it's like to have a pussy are two things that I don't want to live without. I think we're going to become a triad at the rate we're going, so I'm not worried about us. I'm just trying to say how important it is for me to be a member of such a wonderful race of philanthropic aliens." Kurt stumbles as he talks, seeming to be unsure of how to put what he's thinking into words.
Her eyes twinkle with pride. "Oh, I understand. The information I gave you on the way up must have made my race sound really cool."
"Definitely. I hope the people of Earth go and try to help their stellar neighbors someday. Right now, I think they'd have trouble knowing they were accepting help from your people. They fight about same-sex marriage rights... I think an entire race of herms would put some of them in a coma." Kurt shakes his head.
"A coma from how hot that is?" Jaime asks, pretending to be naive.
Leneth and Kurt laugh. When they recover, Jaime looks at Kurt and grins excitedly. "So, do you want to be transformed when we get back?"
Kurt smirks as he looks at Jaime's expression. "No, I'm going to wait until the semester's over. I want to be able to focus on school, this is my second to last semester and if I wait, I'll have all summer to get used to being able to transform and stuff. I understand why you did it right away, your life's dream was dropped in front of you."
Unable to contain his extreme happiness, Jaime leans toward Kurt. "Have you decided if you want to be a herm in your normal form?"
Looking at Leneth, Kurt says, "That's something I can change later, right? I'm thinking that I want boobies and both parts all the time for a while after I change."
Leneth nods. "Sure, people with CZ have a history of relapses where their bodies change. I guess you know why now. Don't talk to people about wanting a smaller waistline and then change it, though. Things like that can get you in trouble. You're supposed to be surprised by the changes."
An image of a voluptuous herm Kurt pops into Jaime's head and he squirms. "I might go for breasts that are a handful someday, but I like the feeling of being a really femmy guy that just happens to have a cunny. I get to surprise people that way... That's why you have a hidden penis, right Len?"
"Mmmhmm, it's fun to have other Chimera stare at my crotch when I'm in this form, wondering where my penis is. I tend to mix it up, though. Sometimes I walk around my brethren naked and have a sheath, other times I have my slit be visible or invisible. I've even started a couple relationships with a sheath down there in my normal form--it went okay, but it was hard to know what their reaction would be. I wasn't sure what to do when I started dating you; you were such a nice guy that I decided not to take any chances." She rubs her tail along Jaime's leg.
"Aww, that's sad and sweet at the same time." When Jaime pets the end of her tail, she murrs.
"You two are fun to watch..." Kurt leans back in his chair. "I'm going to take my time deciding all that stuff."
"Take all the time you need," Leneth says. "Lets do a bit more stargazing and then head back."
Jaime nods as his eyes wander from star to star. His companions follow suit. Time seems to slow as Jaime inspects the overwhelming vastness around him. He almost jumps out of his chair when he hears Leneth's voice.
"Time for us to go down." As she speaks, she uses the 3D controls and the ship falls toward earth. "Zero g now. I turned off the field in the ship so we can enjoy the descent."
Fear causes Jaime to freeze in his seat. Kurt seems to be enjoying this, but he can't stop thinking about them burning up in the atmosphere. He's probably watched one too many sci-fi shows. The weightlessness feels so weird and awesome at the same time. Leneth sets her cellphone in mid-air and it spins slowly; they all get mesmerized by its slow dance through the air. A red warning screen pops up in front of Leneth and she closes it.
Jaime's heart beat accelerates as Kurt asks, "Shouldn't we slow our descent?"
"Yeah, but we don't have to for another couple minutes. That screen was just warning me that the ship will take over if I don't slow us down soon..." Smirking at each of them, her ears twitch with excitement. "How do you two like zero g?"
"It's neat, but I'm getting very dizzy." The fear is now mixed with a feeling of severe disorientation as Jaime loses track of which way is up. There is no up in space... No, for them there is an up. Up is space and down is the earth, which they're falling like a meteor toward.
"My stomach is starting to bother me a little, but this is awesomerad," Kurt says while continuing to watch Leneth's phone.
She grabs her cellphone out of the air and then uses a menu for a moment and the gravity comes back gradually as the ship rotates so that the front of the ship is pointing down. Then she turns her chair forward. It feels incredibly strange to Jaime, because he can see that they're still falling and the gravity of the ship is pulling them sideways toward the floor of the ship instead of down. Artificial gravity is very odd. A question comes to mind that he can't answer for sure on his own. "Can't people on earth see us re-entering? All that heat?"
"There's multiple systems that solve that problem. We can move through the atmosphere with almost no friction. I think it's some sort of plasma field that makes an envelope around the ship. The same technology has something to do with radar not being able to see us, I think. I actually know more about how to fly the ship than how it works," she says as she shows them different views of the earth below them. It looks like she's calling up views from satellites of different cities and forests. "This is one of my favorite features. We're patched into every Chimera ship that's sharing its view, every Chimeran satellite, and every spy satellite."
An image of someone using their Kindle in bright sunlight reveals that they can read the text of the article the person is reading. "Wow! Is that the resolution of a Chimeran satellite?"
"Nope, that's an American one. We have slightly better resolution, but what makes ours cool is that they are so small that they can easily be disguised as space junk." Her ears perk up and she looks back at Jaime. "Oh! I read an article that talked about how we use disturbances in the atmosphere to get more magnification out of our satellites. It's something that the US military is trying to do with binoculars looking through those heat disturbances you sometimes get when the sun's out."
"The atmosphere being used as a huge lens? Now that's an awesome idea." Kurt looks thoughtful for a moment. "I want to go back up to stargaze sometime. I bet the Chimera have some really good space telescopes you could patch through."
She nods. "Oh yeah, we do. We can do that sometime before school starts."
"Len, you said that you don't know much about how the ship works. Isn't that bad if something breaks?" Jaime smiles at Leneth to let her know that he's not that worried about it. She said that these ships are very low maintenance.
"Not really; in space a broken ship stands out like a sore thumb. An infrared telescope would pick us up almost instantly and someone would try to send a message to us. If ships don't respond, an aid ship is sent right away. Plus, all our ships are networked. If our ship suddenly stops receiving or sending data, someone will come after us. There are lots of engineers on call and they know their stuff. Part of the reason I have to clear any travel I do with this ship is that dispatch has to make sure enough engineers are on call to handle the problems that might occur. My race has space travel down almost as well as genetic manipulation and nanotechnology." The pride for her race is shining through her once again.
Kurt's tail flits back and forth in interest as he listens. "I wish cars were taken care of that well; what your race has for spaceships is like AAA on steroids."
For the first time in this trip, Jaime feels completely safe. He sits back in the chair and says, "That's great news." He watches as they get closer to earth. Farmlands start to show up as squares or circles that have slightly different shades of green, roads become visible, buildings start looking like they have some height to them, the details on the bridges start to stand out. Soon he can see individual cars and after that it's not too long until they're back at Leneth's house.
Jaime is left with a feeling that the world is so small and fragile. It's one tiny ball of life amongst an endless expanse of nothing that has other tiny balls in it. Once he's followed them into the house, he looks at each of them. "Did either of you get the feeling that we're really insignificant in the grand scheme of things?"
"I felt like that before, but my mom once told me that changing one gene can cause a baby to be stillborn. She said that the entire universe is like that, that one idea, one electron can eventually change everything. That's the ideology behind why my people don't do evil things. Pain and suffering can live on for eons after the event that originally caused it. The solution is simple: do things that make people happy, not sad." She sits on the couch.
Kissing Leneth on the cheek and sitting next to her, Kurt says. "Beautiful answer."
A wave of emotion causes Jaime to stagger. His years of being ridiculed for his identifying with furs, his refusal to return the hatred others showed him, he was one person preventing the spread of that hate. Tears start falling down his cheeks. He's not insignificant. He's stopped misery from spreading his entire life. All those times he encouraged furs to try to understand his kin, each time he explained his views to a class or a friend.
"Are you okay?" Leneth reaches toward him. "Come here."
Walking slowly toward her, he lets the tears fall. Why did it take him so long to see this?
Kurt smiles at Leneth. "I think you touched him, Len. I think those are tears of joy." He turns to look in Jaime's eyes. "Am I right?"
Nodding slowly, Jaime sits in Leneth's lap and she hugs him close. He cries for ten minutes before he finally slides off her lap and sits next to her.
They all spend that evening marathoning "Hayate the Combat Butler." The humor of the show helps them recharge after spilling so many tears. Jaime and Leneth stay in their Chimera forms all night and Kurt gets fascinated with their features during breaks in the show. By the time they go to bed, Jaime feels wonderful about his life. He's at peace with his place in the world and the people he's chosen to share it with.
The next morning, Jaime and Leneth change back into their normal forms and they spend most of the day hiking with Kurt in the national wildlife refuge. The weather isn't that cold and they get to see a lot of hawks, eagles, deer, chickadees and wild turkeys. On their way home, they order some Mediterranean take-out and pick it up. When they get home, they eat their delicious Mediterranean meal and watch more "Hayate."
At ten PM they start to fall asleep while watching the show and get ready for bed. The next hour is spent cuddling and whispering sweet nothings until they fall asleep in each other's arms. Jaime dreams that they're all in a park full of Chimera playing frisbee golf with plastic hubcaps while anime characters try to catch the hubcaps and run away with them.
The next morning comes a bit too early for Jaime, but he feels mostly rested. It takes him a few minutes to shake off the weird feeling his dream left him with. When Leneth and Kurt try to get him to get up, his groggy mind replaces them with anime characters speaking a language he doesn't understand. They eventually leave him alone and fifteen minutes later, reality seems real enough for him to start his day.
When he sits up in bed, he squeaks softly at the feeling of his clit rubbing against his balls and notices that his cunny is really wet. Accidentally brushing all the right places, he moves to the end of the bed. Looking down, he sees that his penis is poking out of his sheath and furrows his brow in confusion. He's not horny, he's too groggy to be horny. Maybe he's just overly sensitive. Putting on a pair of boxers seems to help, but the act of putting them on gets his cock half-way out and makes his clit even harder. That's really weird. It's like his mind is not ready for sex, but his body is. Standing still for a minute calms his crotch down.
When he walks into the living room, he sees that Kurt's playing "Blazblue." Kurt's ears swivel toward Jaime before he pauses the game and looks back at him. "You up for a duel?"
"Sure." As Jaime sits down on the couch, he sees that Leneth is making them some cream of wheat. A few rounds later Jaime's barely able to keep Kurt from getting perfect wins every time. Jaime's screwing up most of his special moves. He actually feels relieved when when Leneth hands him and Kurt their cream of wheat because he needs time to figure out why he's having so much trouble.
He thinks about what he's doing wrong so hard that he doesn't even taste his meal. It's probably just an off day for him--he's having a terrible time concentrating. It's more than that, his nipples are overly sensitive, his cock keeps randomly poking out of its sheath whenever he moves in a way that causes his crotch to rub against his boxers, and his pussy is still as wet as it was when he woke up. He hasn't even thought about sex today, why is he feeling this way? If he was horny, he'd have sex to solve this problem, but right now he just feels hypersensitive. Just like the way he felt when he got out of bed. What the hell is going on? Putting his empty bowl down, he tries to focus on something else.
Maybe some tea would help. "Len, can I have some of that Japanese green tea you like?"
She opens a cupboard and grabs a tin of looseleaf tea. "I'm going to have some too, with a bit of honey. Do you want honey in yours?"
Using his thumb and index finger, Jaime makes a tiny space between them and holds his hand in front of his face. "Yeah, I'd like a bit less than you normally put in, though."
"I'd like to try it, but I don't want any honey, honey." Kurt smirks.
"Okay dears, I'll have your tea ready in a couple minutes." Leneth's bushy fox tail bounces cutely through the air while she makes the tea in the nude.
Jaime's eyes are fixed on her wonderful hips and base of her tail. He squeaks in surprise when Kurt makes a creepy expression and puts his face between Jaime and Len's fine body.
With a chuckle, Kurt says, "Ready to play more?"
Five minutes later, the tea is delivered and fifteen minutes later, Jaime realizes that it's not helping at all. He's only slightly more awake. Ten minutes and a few losses later, he gives up and puts down the controller so he can put all their bowls and cups in the dishwasher. Thankfully, Kurt doesn't make any comment about winning so much--he's definitely noticed that Jaime's having an off day. After putting the dishes in the dishwasher, Jaime walks back to the couch not sure he wants to play anymore. He feels even more distracted than he did before.
A clothed Leneth walks into the room and looks at both cats. "We need to get some groceries."
"Can I stay here and try to get a couple things in this game figured out while you two shop?" The other reason Jaime doesn't want to go is that just walking from one end of the room to the other rubs his oversensitive areas. He'll probably be even worse off if he goes out with them. Even little bumps in the road might affect him.
"That's fine with me; that work for you, Len?" Kurt gets off of the couch and heads toward the bedroom.
Leneth nods. "Yep, I'm going to start the car." She puts on her winter gear and heads out the front door
A couple minutes later Jaime hears Kurt walk out of the bedroom, put on his coat, and leave the house.
