The end of the world was exactly what the scientists said it would be. Israel got pissed at Pakistan and fired the first nuclear missiles on November 4th 2013. This caused the U.S, Russia, and England to retaliate. However three nuclear missiles going off in a small area expanded the explosion to engulf several countries including Arabia. The Arabians retaliated and it went down hill from there. Most of the survivors were sailors, pilots, and the few small communities that the different countries didn't attack. How do I know this, you might be asking. Easy, I survived it, what's worse the world ended on my birthday. Hell of a way to become a twenty one year old. My fellow sailors and I were celebrating my step into what they called adulthood when the Captain walked in with a somber face.
Everyone instantly came to attention and he said "Nuclear war has broken out all over the world. The U.S., Russia, China, England, and France are the only countries that have survived at all. The president radioed in and said that all ships should stay out at see for as long as possible, subs are to remain submerged, and survivors are to stay in doors to prevent as much radiation poisoning as possible. It will be years before the world is clear, so we may be out here for years gentleman."
I sighed and said softly to my best friend Rolan, who had the same job as me, "I told you my birthday would be the day the world ended."
He burst out laughing and said "I guess you were right, but it's kind of ironic that the world dies as you grow."
I nodded slowly, then turned to the captain and said "Sir, what about those who were supposed to rotate duty stations?"
He smiled sadly and said "Well Rear Admiral Wolf, I hate to say this but the president said all personnel are to stay with their ship. I hope that doesn't hurt you."
I raised an eyebrow and laughed then said "Captain Verak, I didn't intend to cause you any distress, I was just wondering what our admiral in chief had planned. Also after two years captain, I believe we're friends, so call me Jake." I was the youngest rear admiral in fleet history, and that was only because I'd excelled at OCS and at C school causing me to be eligible as a teacher. Instead I'd chosen to become a full time sailor and entered the fleet. During my first year my crew and I had repelled pirates, then I'd been transferred to my current ship the USS. Enterprise. It was a beautiful ship, and I'd been proud to serve under her captain. Until I'd found out I was an upper rear admiral, and that I should be in charge. I trusted Captain Verak with my life, so I told him to control his own ship and I'd do what I was good at, working with computers.
From there the crew had grown to know me and enjoyed my company. Which was why they were celebrating my birthday with me. We'd been all over the world on this voyage and were a week from shore when the call came in. I studied the Captain and said "So we go back out to sea, and try to find supplies at an island that hasn't been irradiated?" He nodded and went back to his cabin while I started walking among the crew convincing them their families would probably be alright. I silently prayed to any beings that were listening to let my words ring true, not for myself, but for the men who trusted me so easily.
Rolan walked alongside me then as I finished he said "I thought the world was supposed to end last year." I had to laugh at that and said "No, the gods wanted to toy with us, they knew it was my birthday, so they hit the button." I knew Rolan thought I was joking, but I didn't know how much was a joke, and how much was my real inner thoughts.
After that we sailed for seven weeks before finding an island that appeared to have been missed during the nuclear war. Captain Verak asked for five volunteers as we stopped a hundred yards out from the island. We knew that everyone on the ship was already poisoned if the place was coated in radiation, so Rolan, a young sailor named Jeremy, an aviation mech named Anna, my friend Alexa, and I volunteered to head to the island. The captain started to protest and I said "Captain one of us has to stay with the ship, and since this is your vessel, I think it would be better for me to go ashore."
He sighed and nodded then they lowered a skimmer into the water with the five of us on bored. We had rifles, pistols, flare guns, and a box of flares on the skimmer along with enough food to last three days. If we didn't return by the end of the three days, the ship was going to leave without us. Those were my orders to the captain, and he respectfully planned to follow them.
We slowly sailed the skimmer over to the island and I started thinking of the best strategy for how to deal with the natives. After about ten minutes I sighed and muttered "If they're hostile I'll order the men to defend themselves. If they're peaceful we trade them for supplies and request permission to dock the ship in their waters." I sighed and silently thought to myself "I just hope it works out that way." Rolan, who was sitting next to me, saw the look on my face and started to ask a question. I held up a hand to forestall him and said softly "I honestly hope this island either has no natives, or only has friendly natives. I don't think the world needs us to start killing people for virtually no bloody reason."
He nodded slowly and said softly "Aye Aye rear admiral." then turned to the others and reinforced my opinion of what should happen were we to find any natives. I closed my eyes and pulled my cap down over them then dozed for the rest of the trip. I could hear the others talking among themselves as I slipped in and out of consciousness. I completely woke up when the boat grounded on shore. Anna turned off the motor and the five of us slowly climbed on shore. Anna, Alexa, Rolan, and Jeremy all looked at me questioningly. I glanced around the island then said softly "Anna and Jeremy, go westward, Alexa and Rolan go to the east. I'll head straight north. We'll meet back at the skiff in two hours." They nodded and each went the way I directed then I called out after them "DON'T SEPARATE FROM EACH OTHER NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS!" Rolan and Jeremy waved back to let me know they heard what I'd said then ran and caught up to their respective partner.
As the two pairs left my sight I headed into the jungle on a northward path silently cursing the fact that due to the EMP's caused by the nukes my compass wasn't working so I had to judge by the sun's movements. I knew we'd been sailing north from our last position, when we hit the island because the sun had risen to the right of us. Also Rolan and Alexa had gone to the right when I'd sent them eastward. I sighed and stopped beside a tree after about ten minutes of walking because I was already starting to sweat from the heat and humidity of the island.
I quickly pulled off my shirt then shoved it in the pack slung on my back, and started walking again feeling a little better without it weighing me down. After another twenty minutes I found a river blocking my path. It was about twenty paces wide, and only the heavens knew how deep it was. I glanced around for something to test the water with, since this was unknown territory, then picked up a large stick and threw it in. A tentacle lashed out of the water and curled around the stick as it hit, then dragged it under. I blinked and mumbled "Well I didn't want to go for a swim anyway." I noticed vines spreading across the river and wondered if I could swing across like so many movie characters. I quickly climbed up into the nearest tree and grabbed one of the vines pulling on it to see if it would hold my weight.
After about five minutes I was pretty sure it was thick enough to support me at least part of the way so I backed up with it in my hands then ran forward and jumped off the edge of the branch. The vine held for a good ten minutes and got me halfway across the river. I quickly jumped to another vine and swung the rest of the way across the water as the tentacle lashed out and grabbed the vine that I'd just been on when it hit the water. I jumped off the vine to the other side of the river and silently wondered what kind of beasts had tentacles that were a minimum of five inches thick and three feet long.
I wondered if the water was deeper than the three feet that the tentacle had come out, and whether or not the beast would be willing to leave the water for it's prey. I turned and continued north silently wondering how I was going to get back to the skimmer. The next forty minutes passed without incident however at the one hour mark I was suddenly surrounded by a group of figures who looked like something out of the many stories I've read. They were furries, as the world would call them. Some were dogs, others cats, and others still wild animals like raccoons, foxes, and bats. I stared at them a few seconds then took my gun off my shoulder and set it on the ground to show I meant no harm.
They studied me then one said "How come you didn't change?" I raised an eyebrow questioningly and he said "Didn't anything bite you, attack you, or something else?" I shook my head and wondered what he was getting at then blinked and glanced back toward the river. He followed my eyes then his own widened and he asked "Did you cross the river?" I nodded and he stared at me the others backing up a few steps with slightly worried looks on their faces. I raised an eyebrow questioningly and he said "We've lost five pack members to the beast that lives in the river. One of them was a strong fighter and swimmer who managed to escape for a time. The creatures poison eventually killed him however he said it looked like some kind of squid or octopus crossed with a spider."
I blinked and mumbled "Wolf Spider. That's what it made me think of. It rises out of the water to attack it's prey, and since the water is necessary to survive it just waits for something to trigger it's trap. I should have known. I'm just glad I didn't touch the water." I looked up then slowly bowed and said "My name is Rear Admiral Wolf of the United States Navy. I have four fellow crew members two of which went to the west side of the island and two of which went east. I need to know any dangers they may face, and request your assistance to protect them."
The furries as I was still thinking of them walked off and started talking among themselves, with occasional glances at me as if to make sure I didn't plan on picking up my rifle or running. I silently checked that my pistol was still on my hip, then bent down and checked the ammo in my rifle. They watched me and I heard a few sighs of relief as I left the rifle on the ground. I slowly stepped away from it then leaned on a tree watching them and waiting for their answer. After a few minutes the leader, who was a large German shepherd fur, and two others walked up to me. I glanced at them questioningly and the leader said softly "We'll help you find your friends, but we have one request." I motioned for him to ask and silently swore to do everything within my power to help them.
He growled as one of the others started to say something then said softly "We would like you to take our pack back to your ship. Then to take us to civilization. You see we came here to escape the radiation and the strange disease that's been spreading." I stared at him in confusion since we'd gotten no report of any sort of disease before the radio had died and he explained "Shortly after the nukes started flying and people started fleeing, a lab was destroyed and a strange disease was released into the states. It was in our home town of Antharia California that the first out breaks started. It appears that the disease was a biological weapon designed to be sent after anyone who attacked the U.S. so a nuclear war could be avoided."
I nodded slowly and mumbled "So that's why we were told not to dock in California. I thought it was because the base had been bombed, but from what a few of my friends said they hadn't been touched. It appears that most of the nukes were centered around the capitol, New York, and the eastern seaboard. Which means as we were nuked from the east we were infected from the west causing problems all over the country."
I sighed and said softly "We'll try to take you on board but I make no promises other than that I'll speak on your behalf. Now can you please help me find my friends before something on this island attacks them." He nodded then motioned for me to pick up my rifle and spoke to a few of his men. He pointed at five of them then pointed west. They grudgingly nodded and did as he commanded, then he motioned for the rest of his band and I to follow him west. As we walked I checked my rifle and mumbled "It's just a simple twenty two but it can still put a bullet through anything's skull." The alpha of the pack as I'd heard the others calling him glanced back at me and I said aloud "So, how long have you guys been on this island and how many of you are there? Also do you have some fresh water and food we can take with us when we leave?"
The alpha fell back next to me and said softly "First since you only seem to be addressing me I should tell you a few things. 1. I'm in charge of the pack, but only by vote. 2. My name is Ronald, but the others just call me Ron. 3. The husky is Donald. The fox is Kayla. The Lizard is Richey, and the Doberman is Dominic. Dominic and Richey don't like you. Now as for food and water, we have enough to get us back to the U.S. and then some. we found the only things that weren't infected were closed food and drinks. With that said I think we should bottle as much water as we can before we leave just in case."
I slowly nodded in an agreement and he continued "There are a few bunkers that are stocked up back in our home town, and I heard there were scientists trying to fix the problem. I also heard a few doctors are trying to study the disease, so maybe we can help them out when we get back to the states." I nodded and silently wondered if we'd find ammunition for our guns when we got there because I had the feeling we wouldn't have very long after we got back before those that enjoyed the infection would come after us. I'd noticed that the anthros as I'd started calling them, which I'd done when I was younger, were constantly sniffing the air as if they smelled something I couldn't. Suddenly Dominic held up a hand and motioned for Ron to join him. I watched Ron walk up and the two started talking about something further up the trail. I slowly walked up and listened as Dominic explained.
Dominic growled and said "Alpha the trail splits up ahead and the scent of two humans goes on both tracks, which do you want to travel?" Ron thought about it then pointed at himself, Dominic, and me and pointed down one trail while pointing at the other trail and motioning for the other three to go down the other trail. Dominic grudgingly nodded and the three of us started down the path. I constantly checked the field ahead through my scope then stopped dead as Dominic said "We're being followed by the snakes in the trees." I glanced at Ron who nodded then motioned for Dominic to explain. Dominic sighed and mumbled about outlanders then looked at me and said "There are snakes people traveling through the trees. Some just have the heads of snakes, others the body. I can't tell by the smell which it is, but they're following us for some reason."
I sighed and said softly " Will they go after a lone member if we split?" He nodded staring at me curiously and I said "I'm going to turn to the right here and try to get their attention, I would like you guys to continue on until you find my friends. When it's all said and done I'll catch up." Dominic looked at me with no respect while Ron started to protest I held up a hand and said "I grew up in the forests. I can handle a little problem like this. Also I doubt they'll be expecting me to shoot first ask questions later." Slowly Ron nodded then he and Dominic started walking. I stayed where I was for a bit and watched the trees catching movement then waving my arms and running off to the right of the path.
I glanced back and saw that the figures were following me then wondered if they'd set up a trap ahead of me and quickly pulled out my pistol sliding my rifle onto my back and slamming a fresh clip into the slot of my pistol. I saw a clearing ahead of me and slid into it then stopped in the middle slowly aiming all around I made sure I had a few extra clips on my belt then fired a single shot into the trees above me and shouted "IF YOU WANT TO TASTE MY FORTY FIVE'S LEAD KEEP HIDING! IF NOT SEND ONE OF YOUR MEMBERS TO MEET ME HERE IN THE CLEARING AND WE'LL TALK!" I heard a rustling behind me and turned and shot then heard a hiss of pain and saw a tail being drawn back into the trees.
I growled and aimed into the branches of the trees and the area directly above me. suddenly I heard the sound of someone approaching from the edge of the clearing and pointed my gun at it as a snake man walked forward with his hands spread wide. Snake man was a term I used lightly, even to myself. he had the head of a snake and was covered in scales, yet his body was mostly human in appearance otherwise. He studied me and said "We heard you were taking the mammals away. We would like to go with you. If you allow usssssssss to go with you, we will keep to ourssssssssssselvessssssssss and we will promisssssssssssse to cause no trouble with your crew. If you cannot pick usssssss up on thisssssssssssssss trip then please come back for usssssssssssss." I sighed and thought about it for a while then turned and shot getting a snake person in the arm as they tried sneaking down the tree to get me from behind.
I growled and said "Fine. We'll take you, but if you try to bite any of us, the "mammals" as you call them included, I'll put a bullet in your head. That goes for your friends to. Tell them that, now excuse me while I go catch up to the others. Also meet me at the beach in an hour with any supplies you plan on bringing with you. We'll dock the ship and all of you will be allowed on board in quarantine conditions. We'll separate you and the other anthros then we'll go back to the U.S." The lizard man nodded and climbed up a tree to talk to his fellows while I turned and followed the others.
It took me about twenty minutes to catch up and when I did I stopped dead in surprise. Alexa was laying on the ground with a large bite in her shoulder that had white fur flowing out from it and slowly starting to cover her arm. I quickly ran over and picked her up then glanced at Rolan who said "Some giant fox came out of no where and attacked us. It slammed me into a tree then bit the fuck out of Alexa. I didn't know what to do other than shoot the thing. I did that then the two of us continued to here where she passed out. Then these guys arrived and said something about you being with them. Jake what the hell is going on?"
I glanced at Ron who said softly "She was lucky. The beast wanted her for it's mate, but it only infected her a little bit. At most the fur will cover her shoulder and she'll develop a few fox features." He reached into a satchel around his waist and pulled out a bottle of water then cleared up the wound. I glanced at him and he said softly "She'll be fine, the wound will heal quickly. That's one thing you can say for this infection, it keeps us healthy." I nodded and motioned to head back to the skiff then Ron pulled Rolan to his feet and the four of us started back.
After about half an hour we had to stop because Rolan tripped and sprained his ankle. Ron glanced at Dominic who nodded and pulled his arm over his shoulder then the four of us continued onward. After another hour we finally got to the skiff where the Snake people, The anthros, Anna, and Jeremy were standing waiting for us. They saw me carrying Alexa and ran over I motioned them back then got into the skimmer and laid her down before turning to Ron and Dominic. They looked at me questioningly and I said "You two, and two reptiles are going with me across the water to our ship. You'll each tell what you know, then I'll find you accommodations on the boat based on what the captain thinks. I'm also going to quarantine Alexa in my chambers until we can talk to a doctor."
They nodded then I pointed at one Naga, as furries called those with a snake body, and one snake man. They slid over and said "Get your dang tails in the boat." They nodded and slid into the skimmer then I glanced at the other three and said "Rolan talk with the snakes and get them to sort their supplies. Anna you do the same for the Anthros. Jeremy tell all of them to get into ordered groups and pull on a blue or red armband. Blue for anthro, Red for reptile." The three of them nodded and I pushed the skimmer in the water then guided ti back to the boat. I had them lower a ladder and motioned for the others to climb up then slipped Alexa on my shoulders and grabbed the ladder and climbed up. I moved her into my arms when I got on deck then carried her to my quarters and laid her on my bed. I locked the door behind me and headed to the captain's quarters mumbling under my breath.
Ron and Dominic caught up to me then the two snake people joined me and I politely knocked on the door to the captain's quarters. He opened the door and I said "Captain I request permission to enact quarantine and in so doing allow these two groups onto the ship in select areas. I also suggest we send out jets to scout out the area when we return to the U.S." He stared at me and I said "It's your ship captain, so make the decision but I gave my word I would get these two groups people's to the states." I folded my hands behind my back and waited patiently for the captain's answer.
He thought about it then said softly "We need to dock and re-supply anyway. However you are in charge of making sure the three groups get along, and that there is no fraternization until we know how the disease is spread." I nodded and saluted then the six of us reported onto the bridge and the captain commanded them to dock the ship. The crew quickly did so then I picked out twenty sailors and led them down to the hold. I quickly directed them to close off two different sections and clear them out then put a red marker on the lower deck and a blue marker on the slightly higher one. I glanced at the two reptile then at Dominic and Ron.
They looked back at me and I said "You're people will be split in two groups, everyone with a blue marker is on the upper of these decks, the lower is for everyone who has a red mark. Am I understood." All four nodded and I walked up onto the deck then motioned for the gangway to be lowered. Anna and Rolan walked up and I said "Permission to come aboard granted sailors. Now go tell our guests that their commanders have been chosen." They nodded and walked downstairs then I turned to Ron and the Naga and said "You guys are in charge of each group. Ron you will be blue, Mr. Naga you will be red. You will both report to me while on this ship, if you can't find me report to the captain. Now go lead your people to their temporary homes." They nodded and went down the gangway to gather up their groups.
I watched them all go then went to one of the spare decks and slipped into a light sleep while I waited for everyone to be ready to go. Suddenly someone started shaking my shoulder and I jumped to my feet with my pistol pointed at the nose of a young sailor. He stared at it and I said "Sailor?"
He breathed deeply then said "Rear Admiral Wolf, your guests are on board and the supplies are loaded. The captain asked to know your orders." I motioned for him to lead on and the two of us walked out onto the deck. He then led me to the where the captain was waiting and left quickly. I watched him go then turned back to the captain and waved for him to take the ship home. He saluted then I walked to the flight deck and watched the pilots check their jets and prepare for when we got home.
I sighed and walked back to my room then sat down at the base of the door and mumbled "I wonder what awaits us when we get to Ron's town. I wonder how Alexa will react to officially being part fox, and more importantly, how will the infection be contained after all this." I looked up and said softly "Whatever the answer to my questions, I honestly don't care because no matter what waits for us I will do whatever it takes to find my friends, my family, and protect them all." Suddenly my shoulder started throbbing and I mumbled "Maybe they have something to do with all of it. I guess the only way to find out.... is to take the first steps down the road that once led to home."
To Be Continued............................................
Well now a new story that many probably thought would have nothing to do with Furries. WELL YOU WERE WRONG! Also what kind fo creatures could Jake be thinking about? Why is he so worried? What is the world's current state? Why do I ask these questions, the answer is I find it interesting to start you guys down certain paths and see if you were paying attention. Anyway see you next upload no matter what I toss out, also anyone who sees my old stuff and compares it to now, can be brutally honest and say my grammar must have improved but I still have no editor. Anyway please comment.
