#4 of Life's Many Surprises

So here's chapter 4 of Adam's life and we get some explanation on what's going on here. I hope everyone likes this, it's bigger, funnier and hopefully better than my previous ones. I really tried to give it all of my attention this time to make it better, have fun reading :)

Quickly Adam focused his power into his legs and jumped towards the audience as if he was about to crowd surf. From the audience's point of view the sight was very frightening to say the least. Seeing a man flying through the air about to crash on top of you wasn't the greatest sight to see if you were one of the people he was about to fall on top of. But as if to make matters worse, the sight of seeing a dragon jump through the air, gravity coming into effect soon afterwards and begin to push him back down to earth right below you; the sight would frighten even the most hardened person. Unfortunately for Adam the jump wasn't enough, he was still too far away from the judge to catch him.

'Come on, just a few more feet and I can reach out and catch him.' Adam thought as he continued to watch the judge fall through the air.

"Flap your wings Adam, you have to fly!" Ryan yelled into the headset, watching Adam begin to fall towards the ground, where several audience members were standing underneath him.

"But I thought you said it was dangerous for me to try flying until you trained me." Adam replied into the headset growing more and more worried as he continued to fall.

"Falling on top of those people and crushing them with several hundred pounds of dragon is a whole lot worse than you possibly flying into a wall, so your training starts now." Ryan quickly replied back after seeing Adam had only a few feet left before he would crush the people below him.

"All you're really trying to do right now is push yourself forward through the air while pushing yourself up away from the ground at the same time. It's when you try to turn that it gets complicated. Remember back when you flapped your wings and blew air towards the audience. Well it's basically that, except to move forward through the air you flap your wings at an upwards angle and push the wind behind you in a downwards angle in order to push you diagonally upwards through the air. Just remember not too hard or else you'll go straight into the roof" Ryan continued to say through the headset.

Immediately Adam focused on angling his wings into the correct position and began to flap pushing most of the air around him towards the correct direction to achieve his goal, the effect was instantaneous. For the first few flaps, Adam stopped falling and began to hover above the people's heads. After stopping his descent, Adam then angled his wings upwards and pushed himself diagonally upwards towards his intended target, the terrified falling judge. In a few seconds Adam was nearly within arm's reach of the judge, but at the same time the judge was just about to fall on top of the peoples' heads. In a desperate attempt to grab onto the judge, Adam quickly flapped his wings one last time in order to push him forward and grab the judge in both of his arms, thus protecting the audience members below them. Unfortunately when Adam flapped his wings, he didn't focus on how strong he flapped them. As a result to his strong flap, both Adam and the judge flew through the air quickly and headed straight towards the wall on the other side of the room.

"Uh, is there enough time for you to teach me on how to turn while flying before I crash into this wall?" Adam asked Ryan through the headset.

"There definitely isn't enough time. Protecting the judge is top priority though, so turn your body around so you'll cushion the blow for the judge." Ryan answered feeling sorry for what was about to happen to Adam.

"What?!" Adam yelled, hoping he didn't hear Ryan clearly.

"You know you can't let the judge get hurt after you included him in your performance. Plus you're a dragon, which means your threshold for pain has increased greatly." Ryan replied calmly.

"Meaning?" Adam asked with a hint of anger in his voice at how easy Ryan was reacting in this situation.

"Meaning when you hit the wall it will feel more like a chalkboard eraser hitting your back rather than how it would normally feel. So protect the judge with your body and just relax, nothing bad is going to happen." Ryan answered as he began to walk towards where Adam was about to crash.

"Says the person who isn't about to crash into a wall going at least twenty miles an hour through the air." Adam replied as he turned his body around so his back was facing the wall to protect the judge.

A few seconds later Adam crashed into the wall, the action making a loud thud that caused some of the audience members to flinch at the sickening sound. Immediately after hitting the wall, Adam's body slid down until he plopped down onto the ground. Everyone in the audience, including the two remaining judges, looked towards Adam wondering if he or even the judge were still alive after such a horrible crash. Ryan on the other hand wasn't worried at all; he knew for a fact that dragons could take hits harder than what Adam just took. When Ryan eventually reached Adam, he knelt down to one knee and leaned forward to speak into Adam's ear; purposefully blocking everyone's view of Ryan also taking the bluetooth headset out.

"Told you there wasn't anything to worry about." Ryan said into Adam's ear while giving a soft chuckle.

"It may not have hurt that much but it's not like it was fun or anything." Adam said after taking a deep breath, regaining all of the air that was knocked out of his body from the crash.

"How's the judge?" Ryan asked as he looked down towards the body Adam was clutching close to his body.

In response to Ryan's question, Adam opened his arms and looked down towards the judge he had just protected from a life threatening hit. For the first few seconds the judge didn't move at all but luckily his chest was gently rising and falling proving that he indeed was still alive. In hopes of waking him up, Ryan shook the judge's body and gave a few slaps to his face hoping that would be enough. After the fifth slap the judge began to move; soon his eyes opened up and looked around checking his surroundings.

*groans out in pain as he brings his hands up to clutch his cheeks* "Why does my face hurt so much?" The judge asked out towards no one in particular.

"That would be because of Ryan's unorthodox way of doing CPR." Adam replied as he gave Ryan a disapproving look for his actions.

"It's unorthodox but it worked." Ryan said with a shrug of his shoulders.

*looks towards Ryan and glares angrily at him* "Next week you're going to learn how to do CPR the correct way." The judge said as he began to get up off of the ground with Adam's help in keeping him steady until he got his bearings straight.

"So...how was my performance?" Adam asked softly, absolutely worried about what the judge would say.

"After what just happened, you have the audacity to ask me how your performance was?" The judge said as he turned around and stared at Adam angrily.

"I'll discuss how you've done with my colleagues and we'll give you our final verdict the next time we return to school. Until then, *turns towards everyone else in the room* you can all go home and have a restful weekend after having such an exciting day today." The judge continued to say.

"I know I sure need one." The judge muttered under his breath to himself.

After making his statement, the judge walked to the other judges, where they began to talk about many things. Soon after the judges began to talk to each other, the audience started walking towards the one exit in the entire room. As a result of over a hundred people trying to leave at the same time without any order at all, the exit soon became congested and few people were able to leave the room quickly, everyone else being forced to wait there until they could push themselves through.

"Well until that line grows smaller, I think we should go backstage and rest." Ryan said after turning towards Adam.

"Why go backstage when we can rest right here?" Adam asked with a clearly confused look on his face.

"Multiple reasons, One-there's a couch that's much more comfortable to sit on than the chairs out here." Ryan began to answer, which Adam nodded his head in agreement with what Ryan said.

"And two..." *leans closer to Adam and whispers* "You may not have noticed but there's a few people who didn't try to leave right away and have been giving you a strange look for the past two minutes." Ryan finished saying as he secretly nodded his head in the direction the people he mentioned were standing. Unfortunately Adam wasn't as secretive and turned his head around, looking directly at the people who apparently have been staring at Adam for awhile now.

"What do you think they want?"Adam asked worriedly as he started taking a few steps back away from the four people staring at him.

"Well you did just fly around the room, in what they think is supposed to be your costume, not you real body, so they probably want to ask you a whole lot of questions on how you did it, and then there's the crash into the wall." Ryan answered as he too was now looking directly at the people.

"What am I going to do, it's not like I can tell them the truth and I can't even think of a lie that would make any sense to tell them." Adam replied, taking his eyes off the people and looking straight at Ryan hoping he would have a plan.

"Go backstage and hide somewhere just in case they follow you, I'll distract them for now." Ryan said looking at Adam and seeing how worried he was that his secret would be found out.

After giving a nod of acknowledgment Ryan and Adam went in opposite directions, Ryan walking directly towards the people, and Adam running back towards the stage, though Adam soon learned that dragons aren't exactly known for their exceptional running. Once the people saw Adam turn away from them and try to run away down one of the aisles towards the stage, they began to run after him in hot pursuit. Hoping to give Adam more time to get away from the people, Ryan walked in front of the people trying to distract them.

"Hey guys, how are you doing?" Ryan asked the group while standing in front of them, getting their attention off of Adam.

"We're annoyed because you're in our way, now move!" One of the people said as all four of the people started to push around Ryan.

*runs in front of the aisle the people were about to run down and gets in their way again* "What's the rush guys, it's not like we can leave the room until the line shortens considerably?" Ryan asked pretending he didn't know why the people were so aggressive.

"You know why, you're friends with Adam and we want to know how he was able to fly, there's no way he could make a costume that could do that." One of the people answered.

"He shouldn't be able to make a costume period, let alone a detailed dragon costume like that." Another person in the group added as they began to push against Ryan.

'I need to think of something fast, Adam needs more time and these people are going to get past me soon.' Ryan thought to himself as he continued to get pushed back by the four people.

"Get out of our way!" One of the people yelled at Ryan.

'Finally brain you think of something.' Ryan thought to himself as he began to focus on his inner power hoping that what he was about to do would be enough to send the people away

During the pushing battle the people were having with Ryan, one of the people looked up at Ryan after seeing a flash of light come from that direction and saw that Ryan's eyes were now a blood red color like that of a demon and filled the person with utter terror for some unknown reason. In reaction to seeing Ryan's eyes, the person gave the most ear piercing shriek anyone had ever heard. The shriek immediately stopped everyone from what they were doing including the other remaining people who were pushing against Ryan. Seeing his opening, Ryan used all of his strength and pushed the three people in front of him away, causing them to fall down to the ground.

"What the hell? Why did you scream?" One of the people asked.

"And why did you have to do it right in my ear?" Another person asked after the ringing sound in their ear went away.

"His eyes, they were blood red and had such evil look in them, it was so horrible I've never seen anything like it before." The person who screamed said as they started to back away from Ryan, making sure not to look at his eyes again.

While everyone was looking at the frightened person trying to figure out what they meant, and in doing so turning their backs on Ryan for the time being; incidentally, they failed to notice the quick flash of light that appeared and disappeared over Ryan's eyes again.

"What's wrong with his eyes?" One of the people in the group asked, causing everyone to turn around and look back towards Ryan who stood there like nothing was wrong, and with his normal brown colored eyes.

"Are you seeing things, his eyes are the same as normal. Not some evil red eye or something." One of the people said mockingly.

"I know what I saw. He had evil red eyes and looked like he was going to kill someone." The frightened person said as the group took their attention off Ryan once again.

'That worked perfectly, although people are going to be a little more suspicious of me now.' Ryan thought as he watched the three people in the group argue with the frightened person.

After making sure that their attention was no longer on him, Ryan slowly walked away from the group until reached the stage. Standing in front of the stage, Ryan walked towards the left side until he found the door that led backstage. With a quick glance backwards the group he saw they were still arguing with each other and had completely forgot about Adam and Ryan.

"Perfect getaway." Ryan said to himself quietly as he walked through the doorway and closed the door behind him.

Due to the school storing all props and stage equipment backstage, it was very crowded back there which made walking around pretty hard for awhile, until you reached the dressing rooms where the actors would get into their costumes and relax until it was their time to appear on stage. After a few minutes of searching, Ryan still hadn't found Adam, and after calling out his name a few times, there still wasn't any response.

"Where is he, it's not like he had that much time to hide or anything." Ryan said out loud as he continued to look around the stage equipment and props.

Eventually Ryan reached the dressing area, where on the other side was the couch Ryan had mentioned, which was often used for the actors to relax while not on stage.

"Still no sign of Adam, and I've checked the entire room....where could he be?" Ryan said to himself as he sat down on the couch and thought about all of the places Adam could be hiding in.

After sitting down on the couch for a few minutes, Ryan noticed that there was a sound coming from somewhere in the room and it sounded like snoring. Focusing on where the sound was coming from, Ryan was surprised to find out that it was coming from behind the couch. He then got up and leaned over the back of the couch and looked behind it. What he saw was a blue and black dragon lying on the floor snoring quite loudly, showing that he indeed was asleep.

"Of all places..." Ryan mumbled to himself as he got off the couch and walked behind it; squatting down when he reached Adam.

Trying to wake him up, Ryan tapped his muzzle but soon figured out that Adam wasn't a light sleeper. Thinking of a surefire way to wake Adam up, Ryan leaned closer towards his left ear and said quite loudly "Adam, Kate's here and she knows your secret." Adam's eyes shot open and he quickly got up onto his feet, his heart rate spiking excessively high, that is until he saw Ryan standing next to him trying to keep himself from laughing.

"You weren't serious about Kate were you?" Adam asked Ryan as he started to calm down and become more annoyed with the way he was just woken up from his nap.

"No not really, it was payback in making me look for you just to find out you were sleeping behind the couch. I mean of all places in this entire room to hid, you choose right behind the couch?" Ryan answered while gesturing towards all of the stage props Adam could have hid behind.

"I was tired after flying and trying to run away from the group that behind the couch just seemed the best choice, that is until you woke me up." Adam replied while glaring at Ryan for the rude awakening.

"Well anyways, I distracted the group long enough that no one saw either of us walk in here so we should be safe until the exit isn't blocked by heaps of people anymore, but that might take awhile." Ryan said as he remembered that just before he went backstage he saw that there was still many people pushing their way through the small, clogged up exit.

"Perfect, while we're waiting for everyone to leave, you can tell me how you know so much about my problem and what I'm going through." Adam said with a smirk catching Ryan off guard with remembering that Ryan said he would explain everything.

"Oh...so you remembered I see...well then I guess we'll do that then." Ryan said nervously, wishing for Adam to forget what he had said, that wish obviously not coming true.

"You thought I would forget didn't you?" Adam asked as he walked around the couch and sat his heavy dragon body down on it, resulting in a few groan like sounds coming from the springs within the couch.

"Heh heh...well, yeah I did, but I'll stick to what I said and explain how I know all of this." Ryan answered chuckling a little and then sitting down on the couch as well.

"So first things first, what did you mean when you said that you knew what I was going through?" Adam asked as he looked Ryan right in the eyes, making this question seem more like an interrogation rather than an explanation.

"Like I said earlier today, I went through the same changes you're going through when I was 16 as well. Though at the time I had no idea what was going on and didn't have anyone to help me out." Ryan said as he looked away from Adam's eyes and instead focused on objects around the room.

"This isn't the time to be vague Ryan, what do you mean exactly when you say you've gone through the same changes as me?" Adam asked growing annoyed that Ryan was once again not explaining everything.

*sigh* "Ok I'll stop dancing around the question, the truth is...my body transformed into an anthromorhic animal on my 16th birthday just like how you changed into a dragon." Ryan answered, growing more and more tense about having to tell his biggest secret.

"Why did we transform by the way?" Adam asked, knowing that Ryan wouldn't lie about a big thing such as this.

"No one really knows, all we know is it happens on our 16th birthday. There is a rumor though that it's a rare genetic mutation in our DNA, that apparently takes 16 years to take full effect." Ryan replied as he remembered what was told to him two years ago.

"Are there a lot of people like us?" Adam asked hoping that there were many like him and Ryan.

"I don't think there's a lot, since it is a rare occurrence, but there are quite a few people like us in this state at least." Ryan replied.

"There's even one person in our school like us too." He added after seeing Adam's expression slightly falter.

"Really, who?!" Adam asked excitedly.

"That one you have to figure out yourself, it wouldn't be fair to ruin the surprise on the one person in our school who's a Fur like us." Ryan replied, smiling at Adam's excite towards knowing someone nearby was like them.

"A Fur, is that what we are?" Adam asked, confused at the name Ryan had said.

"Yeah it's the name people thought of since most people in the world who are like us are anthros that have fur. But there are a few dragons and reptiles as well, even some in the group." Ryan answered, adding the last part to make sure Adam didn't feel like he was the only dragon in the group.

"What do you mean 'the group'?" Adam asked feeling a little less confused.

"It's the name we thought of for our collection of furs in this state. As you can tell we're very creative." Ryan answered laughing at the end from his comment and seeing Adam's confused look dissipate.

"Ok so since you won't tell me who the fur in our school is, can you at least tell me the gender?" Adam asked hoping his search wouldn't be too hard.

"Fine if you want to ruin the fun in looking for the one person who's different from everyone else, in a school that has over a thousand students, then I'll tell you." Ryan replied with a smile, having fun in this situation.

"The person is a female, and to make things easier I'll give you another hint, they're in your grade." Ryan answered.

"Well that narrows it down somewhat, but that's still over a hundred girls." Adam said out loud as he started to think about who in his grade could be like him.

"Are there any other questions?" Ryan asked breaking Adam's thoughts on the mystery person.

"When you transformed, what animal did you transform into?" Adam asked, remembering that he hadn't asked that question yet.

"I was wondering when you would ask that." Ryan replied with apprehension in his voice.

"Well I'm an arctic wolf basically." Ryan answered as he started to get up and walk around the room.

"Basically? There's more to it than just what animal you are?" Adam asked wondering why Ryan was so nervous about this subject.

"Yeah there's a little more to it than that, but now isn't the time to be talking about it." Ryan said as he looked back down the room towards the entrance/exit door to backstage.

"But..." Adam began to say.

"I promise I'll tell you more about it later at a later time, I'm pretty sure the line to leave the auditorium is gone now." Ryan said as he turned around to face Adam, cutting him off and changing the subject abruptly.

"Besides you have a very special date to get ready for." Ryan added with a smirk after seeing Adam shiver with worry once he remembered about his date with Kate that was going to happen in just a few hours.

"Oh yeah...heh...that." Adam replied with a nervous chuckle as he got up from the couch and walked with Ryan towards the door to leave backstage.

Once they reached the door, Ryan slowly opened the door and looked around to make sure no one was watching them. Apparently the Adam's and Ryan's talk passed more time than they thought, because Ryan saw absolutely no one in the auditorium which meant everyone had already left a while ago. Seeing that they were safe, Ryan and Adam exited backstage and soon exited the auditorium as well.

"I really don't know if I can do this, what if I mess up and say the wrong thing or something. I've waited months to be given a chance like this, I don't want to ruin it." Adam surmised to Ryan as they walked down the halls of the school which were completely empty to everyone wanting to get their weekend started early.

"Don't worry she's very understanding, so even if you were to make a mistake she wouldn't care." Ryan replied.

"Plus she has a crush on you as big as you have on her." Ryan added casually after seeing that Adam was still nervous.

"W...wha...how do you that?" Adam asked after being taken aback from Ryan's statement.

"The signs were obvious and when she gets started talking about you I barely can get her to stop, plus she's told me." Ryan answered as he kept walking, until he noticed that Adam wasn't next to him anymore and instead was standing completely still a few steps back with a shocked looked on his face.

"When did you get to talk to her, she's always around her friends at school and you've been around me anyways, so when?" Adam asked trying to figure out how Ryan had done all of this without Adam or anyone else knowing.

"I never said it was at school." Ryan remarked with a smile as he started walking again forcing Adam to continue as well to keep up with Ryan.

"Then where?" Adam asked.

"You'll find out eventually, so there's no reason to tell you now. But even you should have known that she liked you." Ryan answered as he looked back at Adam who soon caught up to Ryan.

"How could I have possibly known, it's not like she's been sending me 'I like you' messages or anything?" Adam asked becoming slightly annoyed that he didn't know that the girl he liked a lot already liked him back.

"Yes she has, whenever she passes you in the halls she glances at you and smiles, classic 'I like you' message, but you always have your head down and never see it." Ryan replied.

"Ok fine she's smiled at me at school, that still doesn't explain how you've had time to talk to her outside of school, unless you stalk her and wait until she's alone to talk to her or something?" Adam thought to himself out loud, until he looked over at Ryan and saw the smile on his face.

"Are you stalking her?" Adam asked seriously, grabbing Ryan's shoulders, making sure Ryan was looking directly at him when he answered.

"Seriously, you're asking me a question like that?" Ryan said incredulously, surprised and annoyed that Adam would really ask him that question.

"Yes I am, I know about the rumors people have passed around over the years about how strange you are. I didn't believe it but right now you're making it a high possibility that you've actually been stalking Kate. Now answer the question!" Adam nearly yelled at Ryan as his grip tightened.

"No I haven't been stalking her ok, she goes to the same place I go to meet some friends and we talk there for awhile, that's how I know. Now put me down." Ryan replied angrily, followed by a low growl in his throat to show that he wasn't joking anymore.

"What? *notices that he's holding Ryan in the air* Oh sorry about that." Adam said as he set Ryan back down on the floor and letting go of him.

"It's not that I didn't believe you, it's just..."Adam began to explain his reasoning for his actions.

"It doesn't matter. Come on we're late, if we wait any longer Kate's going to think you stuck her up." Ryan replied as he smoothed the wrinkles out of his shirt and continued walking down the halls again at a much quicker and angrier pace than before.

"I'm sorry about what I said Ryan." Adam said dejectedly as he tried to keep up with Ryan.

"Like I said before, it's fine, give me sometime ok? Besides we don't want Kate to overhear us and she's right over there." Ryan said as he subtly pointed ahead showing Adam what he meant.

Just a few feet ahead, standing at the entrance to the school and looking out through the glass doors was Kate, no longer in her costume but instead wearing a stunning aqua blue dress that sparkled in the sunlight. Luckily for Adam, Kate at her back to him and didn't see the aghast look he gave her after seeing just how beautiful she looked, which nearly caused him to drool from keeping his muzzle open for too long.

"Only if she was a fur like me." Adam softly said to himself as he continued to stare at Kate, which caused a quiet chuckle to come from Ryan after hearing Adam's comment.

"Yeah Adam, only if. *chuckle* Come on, she's been waiting for you, it's time to get this going." Ryan said as he nudged Adam towards Kate hinting that he should get her attention.

After being pushed closer to Kate, Adam continued walking towards her until he stopped just a few inches behind her. For a few seconds Adam just stood there, trying to will himself to move and get her attention, but he was just too nervous.

'You can do this, you've waited months for this to happen, you can't back out now.' Adam told himself as he reached out a pa towards Kate.

"H...hey Kate." Adam said once he gently tapped her shoulder and getting her attention.

"Oh hey Adam, ready for our date?" Kate asked with a pretty big smile as she looked into Adam's sky blue eyes.

"Yeah I am, oh and are you ok if we hang out at Ryan's place, it would be a little awkward if we were at my house." Adam asked nervously hoping Kate would be ok with the change.

"Ryan's place, if he's fine with it then sure. But aren't you going to change out of your costume though?" Kate asked with a confused look wondering why Adam was going to go on their date in his 'costume'.

"Uhh...I would, but..." Adam began to say as he tried to think of a good enough excuse but nothing came up.

"He can't because he didn't bring a change of clothes and it's not like he can go on a date naked, right?" Ryan joking asked after hearing Adam stubble over thinking of an excuse and coming in to save him from any embarrassment.

"ooookkkkk, if you say so, it's different to say the least, but as long as it doesn't hamper our date, I think I can handle the change." Kate said happily, not wanting anything to keep the date from happening.

"Then it's settled, so unless you two have a ride, *looks at both Adam and Kate shaking their heads* I'll be taking you there myself, so let's go." Ryan said as he opened and held the door open for the two love birds and then exited the school himself.
